A continuously updated tracker of where the Cowboys long list of free agents end up, who stays in house and any external free agent signings. Cowboys related rumors are gathered as well. | From @KDDrummondNFL
The marathon to the 2023 Super Bowl has begun. On Monday, the NFL’s legal tampering window opened, allowing teams to, supposedly, begin negotiations with other team’s free agents. The new league year doesn’t begin until Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. Central time, but the window gives teams a couple days to work out deals and give themselves a better idea of what cap space they’ll need to create.
Teams have until the start of the league year to be cap compliant with their Top 51 contract values. Of course, teams and agents have been negotiating, as witnessed by the Cincinnati Bengals and Alex Cappa agreeing to a four-year deal seconds into the tampering window. Yes, that means they were illegally tampering but nothing will come of it. As for the Dallas Cowboys?
Trading away Amari Cooper moved them to about $20 million worth of cap space, of which they spent a portion to bring back Michael Gallup. They still have plenty of holes to fill and they would like to fill that up with their own guys first. That is best explained with this Process Primer, where in great detail it’s explained why Dallas prefers their own free agents and why the pandemic handcuffed their normal operating procedure.
Below you will find a tracker for all things Dallas and free agency. An accounting of who is in, who is out and who is returning to the fold.
