This 5-star 2023 defensive back has Florida in his Top 7

Florida is one of five teams in the Southeastern Conference to make 5-star DB Tony Mitchell’s latest cut.

Five-star defensive back Tony Mitchell is still a junior in high school, but he’s narrowed down his options to play at the next level from 10 schools to seven.

Florida joins Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Oregon and Texas A&M in the latest cut for Mitchell. Florida State, Miami and Ohio State are all out of the race for now, and it seems almost certain that Mitchell will be playing college ball in the Southeastern Conference.

Although Mitchell plays for Thompson High School in Alabama, he’s from Florida. Committing to the Gators would give him the opportunity to play in front of family, and Mitchell says he’s had a good relationship with the Florida staff from the beginning.

Mitchell committed to Tennessee before getting to high school, but he changed his mind after visiting Alabama and receiving more national interest as a freshman. The Crimson Tide are the 247Sports crystal ball favorites for Mitchell with three predictions from lead experts on ‘Bama’s side.

Alabama and Georgia have already hosted Mitchell this fall, and he plans to be in attendance this weekend when Ole Miss comes to Tuscaloosa for a top-25 showdown. The Gators will get their chance to impress against LSU on October 16 unless Mitchell is forced to miss the game for some reason.

Mitchell is the No. 11 overall recruit and No. 2 cornerback for 2023, according to the 247Sports Composite. His sophomore year highlights can be found below via Hudl.

LSU among top seven for 2023 five-star cornerback from Alabama

LSU is among the final seven for 2023 five-star cornerback/safety from Alabaster, Alabama.

Recently 2023 five-star cornerback Tony Mitchell released his top seven schools for his recruitment. The LSU Tigers among the final seven along with four other SEC schools. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Texas A&M are all in the mix.

The Alabaster, Alabama product is one of the top cornerbacks in the country. Securing his commitment would give LSU their third five-star cornerback pledge since 2019 joining Derek Stingley Jr and Eli Ricks. Quite the company to be among. Mitchell knows the history of playing defensive back in Baton Rouge.

When discussing his top teams, Mitchell told On3 Recruiting “I talk to Coach (Corey) Raymond a lot. That’s DBU.”

Mitchell has yet to set a timeline for narrowing his list down further, or when and if he will visit Death Valley. He is one of the top prospects to watch as the process moves forward. The Tigers are a little behind getting going with the ’23 class compared to some other teams. They hold one commitment in the early going. The 2022 class sits firmly at No. 8 in the country according to 247Sports team composite rankings.

The nationā€™s No. 2 ranked cornerback dropped his final seven schools on Monday afternoon via social media.

Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) five-star Tony Mitchell is down to Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama and Oregon.

Mitchell is ranked as the No. 2 cornerback and the No. 11 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Clemson was among Mitchell’s top-10 school’s list, which he dropped last month. He has since eliminated Ohio State, Florida State and Miami as contenders in his recruitment.

The Tigers extended an offer to Mitchell on June 1. He visited Clemson two days later.

Mitchell has carved out significant relationships with Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and defensive tackles coach/recruiting coordinator Todd Bates. He got the chance to meet them both in person on his visit.

ā€œTheyā€™ve always been at the top of my recruitment,ā€ Mitchell told The Clemson Insider following his visit. ā€œI talk to Coach Reed and Coach Bates a lot, I got to meet Coach Swinney when I visited for the first time.”

5-star cornerback could fit Terrell/Mullen mold in Clemson’s defense

Clemson is in a good position with some of the best prospects in the 2023 class. Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson 2023 five-star cornerback Tony Mitchell is the nation’s No. 1 player at his position and No. 10 prospect for the ’23 class, per 247Sports …

Clemson is in a good position with some of the best prospects in the 2023 class.

Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson 2023 five-star cornerback Tony Mitchell is the nation’s No. 1 player at his position and No. 10 prospect for the ’23 class, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

The Clemson Insider recently checked back in with Mitchell regarding his current recruitment and what he’s been hearing from Clemson as of late.

Mitchell’s main points of contact at Clemson are cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and defensive tackles coach Todd Bates.

ā€œIā€™ve just been talking with Coach Reed and Coach Bates and theyā€™ve just been talking about how I really fit into the defensive system there,” he told TCI. “They want me. Just talking about how great the program is and how Iā€™d benefit from coming there.ā€

Mitchell has been told that heā€™s similar to A.J. Terell and Trayvon Mullen, and would potentially fit into Brent Venablesā€™ defense like those two former Tigers cornerbacks.

According to Mitchell, Clemson likes his physicality, size and versatility. He can play anywhere in the defensive backfield.

If Mitchell were to end up at Clemson, it would give him a lot of confidence that the coaching staff knows how to develop cornerbacks and help them reach the next level, he said.

Mitchell currently considers Clemson to be one of his top schools at the moment. The Alabama cornerback would like to make a top-10 list in the near future, potentially before his junior season.

Heā€™ll make his way up to The Valley for a game this season. Heā€™s not sure which one just yet, but heā€™s ā€œfor sureā€ going to be there.Ā

Those are conversations that Mitchell has had with Clemsonā€™s coaching staff, but more importantly, heā€™s gotten to know Reed and Bates on a personal level.

ā€œWeā€™re real close,ā€ Mitchell said. ā€œTheyā€™ve got to know my family and Iā€™ve been talking with those guys since my freshman year, so we got a really good relationship.ā€

ā€œItā€™s been really good getting to talk to a lot of these coaches and starting to build relationships with a lot of different people and just getting to know everyone,ā€ he added.

This summer has allowed Mitchell to hit the recruiting trail. Something that wasnā€™t available to prospects around the country last year due to the ongoing pandemic.

Mitchell is grateful for whatā€™s been able to do for his recruitment process.

ā€œItā€™s been very good,ā€ Mitchell said. ā€œIā€™m glad we got visits in June, getting to see coaches. Itā€™s been over a year and some months. It was good to see them again, getting to see some schools I havenā€™t been to before. Itā€™s really going to help my recruitment process.ā€
