FAU fires potential Wisconsin Badgers offensive coordinator candidate

FAU fires potential Wisconsin Badgers offensive coordinator candidate

Florida Atlantic fired coach Tom Herman on Monday.

Herman, who led the Owls to a 6-16 mark since he took over in 2023, was let go after losing in gut-wrenching fashion to Temple on Nov. 16. The loss dropped FAU to 2-8 on the season and 0-6 in AAC play.

The news, however, is notable for those invested in Wisconsin’s offensive coordinator situation. After firing offensive coordinator Phil Longo on Saturday, the Badgers are in the market for a new play-caller.

That’s where Herman can step in. The former Texas Longhorns coach served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State from 2012-14, the same years Fickell was the co-defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes.

It’s safe to say Herman’s recent resume with Florida Atlantic sells himself short. At Ohio State, he earned the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. He made the jump from Ohio State’s OC to the Texas top job in just three years. While his tenure since that point has trended negatively, he remains one of the well-thought-of offensive minds in the sport.

If hired by UW, Herman’s relationship with Fickell could prove the catalyst. As of Nov. 18, Wisconsin is reeling and in desperate need of rejuvenation. Herman could bring that type of spark if awarded the opportunity.

Former Texas football coach Tom Herman fired after less than two seasons at FAU

Former Longhorn Head Coach, Tom Herman is out at FAU as Head Coach.

Former Texas Longhorns football coach Tom Herman was relieved of his duties as Florida Atlantic University head coach, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Herman, succeeded Willie Taggart at FAU in 2023, he went 6-16 as the head coach of the FAU Owls. The firing comes amid FAU’s five-game losing streak that included an 18-15 overtime loss to Temple on Saturday.

“I extend my appreciation to Tom Herman for his dedication to our university and our student-athletes,” Florida Atlantic Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White said in a statement on their website. “I informed Tom of my decision this morning and then met with the staff and team. We firmly believe in our ability to win championships and compete for bowl games, and that remains our standard.”

Tom Herman was the Head Coach of the University of Texas football program from 2017-2020, taking over the program from former Coach Charlie Strong. Herman was the Head Coach of the University of Houston Cougars, prior to joining the Longhorns staff.

In the years since his departure he has held various roles, including a stint at the Chicago Bears as a assistant coach. Herman was compensated nearly 15.3 million dollars from UT Athletics at the time of his departure, estimates on X (formerly Twitter) suggest he is entitled to around 4 million from FAU. Herman has received a combined 19.4 million in funds estimated from firings in the last five years.

Perhaps it’s time for Tom Herman to follow the wise words of former LSU Head Coach Ed Oregon.

South Florida coach Alex Golesh brushes off Florida Atlantic’s Tom Herman after romp

The Florida Atlantic and South Florida head coaches with a chilly postgame handshake

It wasn’t the biggest game of the weekend but it had a frosty exchange after it.

South Florida scored the game’s final 23 points on the way to a 44-21 victory over Florida Atlantic on Friday night. The Bulls went for a two-point conversion after the touchdown that put them up by the final score.

After the game had long been decided USF coach Alex Golesh reinserted quarterback Bryce Archie into the game in the final minute.

Up 23, the starting quarterback completed a 10-yard pass for a first down.

Golesh wanted no part of FAU’s Tom Herman when the Owls coach came across the field for the postgame handshake. Herman extended his hand. Golesh shook it and kept walking.

Herman decided he didn’t like the brushoff and went after Golesh.

The issue between the coaches has been simmering since last season when FAU pummeled South Florida 56-14.

The Owls outscored the Bulls 35-0 in the second half of that game, including two TDs and a successful onside kick in the fourth quarter.

Per Greenboldandbold.com:

After the Owls scored late in the fourth quarter, they rubbed the Bulls’ noses in their misery by executing a successful onside kick.

On that day, USF coach Alex Golesh was more concerned about his defense than that play.

“It is what it is. I’m cool. We’ll get ours at some point,” he said.

“When you lose to somebody like last year, you want to go back and beat them this year,” USF receiver Sean Atkins said this week. “So I feel like, in a sense, it is a rivalry just because of that.”

Tom Herman praises Spartan Stadium atmosphere with slight jab to Michigan

While praising the Spartan Stadium atmosphere, Tom Herman took a small jab at Michigan in the process:

Ahead of Michigan State football’s season opener with Florida Atlantic on Friday night, the Owls head man Tom Herman had a press conference, previewing the matchup.

During that press conference, among the key quotes Herman had, he spoke on the atmosphere at Spartan Stadium, throwing a small shot at Michigan in the process.

“I just remember, this is no offense to their brothers in Ann Arbor, but that stadium in Ann Arbor holds 40,000 more people, and I thought the one in East Lansing was significantly louder and more disruptive for an offense.”

A note from the Owls’ head coach that will surely bring a smile to Spartan fans faces.

Braxton Miller’s son has received his first scholarship offer

He’s not even in middle school yet! #GoBucks

There is no debate, Braxton Miller is one of the greatest pure athletes to ever lace ’em up for The Ohio State University. Who knows what his legacy would’ve been had he not got injured before the start of the 2014 season?

Now the question is — will Miller’s ultra-athletic genes be passed on to his children? One Division I head coach is banking on it. Former Ohio State offensive coordinator and current Florida Atlantic head coach, Tom Herman, has offered Miller’s son Landon a scholarship who is, get this … entering sixth grade!

It’s not the first time we’ve seen players get offers before they even get to high school, but it’s somewhat unheard of for a kid just out of elementary school. Of course, Herman has a history with Miller as he was on Ohio State’s staff for the final three years of Miller’s OSU career. Maybe he’s just throwing a former player a bone, or maybe he’s taking a gamble that if Landon is half as talented as his dad, he’s going to be pretty good.

Clearly, there is a lot of time left before anything would come to fruition. Landon Miller won’t graduate from high school until 2031 assuming he doesn’t reclassify. So many things can happen between now and then and my guess is, he’ll get many more looks and offers when the time is right.

Florida Atlantic offers son of Braxton Miller, who is entering 6th grade, a scholarship

Tom Herman and FAU offered a scholarship to Braxton Miller’s son who is entering sixth grade

Tom Herman must be extremely confident he will be coaching Florida Atlantic for many years. That can be explained by his decision to offer the son of former Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller a scholarship. Landon Miller is about to enter … sixth grade.

It has been a big year already for the Millers as dad was selected to enter the Buckeyes Hall of Fame.

There is an Ohio State connection between the Millers and Herman. He was Braxton Miller’s OC from 2012-14 in Columbus.

Herman went 4-8 in his first season as head coach at FAU.

UCLA Coaching search: Tom Herman a candidate per 247Sports

247Sports lists Tom Herman as a candidate for UCLA job.

Who will be the next head coach for the UCLA Bruins football team? That will be a popular question over the next few days after Chip Kelly left for the Ohio State OC position.

A flurry of names has surfaced, including Minnesota HC P.J. Fleck. However, one under-the-radar name is Florida Atlantic coach Tom Herman, per Tracy Pierson of 247Sports (subscription required).

Herman spent time in Texas and has a lot of experience, so it’s certainly an interesting idea. There are good and bad things about Herman, but here’s what Pierson said about the pros:

PROS: Herman became a big name in coaching when he was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2012-2014, and then did extraordinarily well in his first head coaching gig at Houston for two years. He was a big thing in 2017 when he was hired at Texas. He’s known as a great offensive mind and a very good recruiter. The feeling is that he’d be very good with donors and NIL. He’s from SoCal, going to Simi Valley High and then playing at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, so he has deep California ties.

Some of the cons include Herman starting off at Florida Atlantic with a 4-8 record. It remains to be seen which direction UCLA will go with: A veteran coach or a young, up-and-coming coach.

Nonetheless, Tom Herman could get a phone call from UCLA.

Former Ohio State football player promoted at Florida Atlantic

Michael Cibene is a former walk-on for Ohio State football from 2013 through 2016, where he was a reserve defensive back. He has been coaching since leaving Ohio State and was a graduate assistant at Grand Valley State from 2017 through 2018.

Cibene then returned to Ohio State as a defensive assistant from 2019 through 2020 and assisted with the linebacker group consisting of Baron Browning, Malik Harrison and Peter Werner. After working with the Buckeyes as a coach, Cibene moved on to Boston College where he coached in 2021 and 2022 as a graduate assistant and assisted on the defensive line and on special teams primarily.

Cibene was then hired to the Florida Atlantic staff as a defensive analyst in 2023 and was officially promoted to a positional coach role for the edge rushers on January 2nd of this year. Former Ohio State offensive coordinator, Tom Herman. is the head coach at Florida Atlantic and it will be fun to cheer on the Owls who have a few Buckeyes on staff this fall.
