49ers OL roster battle already developing

The 49ers have a fun roster battle on their hands already.

The 49ers’ list of roster battles during the offseason program and training camp won’t be very long considering they’re returning close to all of their starters on both sides of the ball. One clear position battle is already taking shape along the offensive line.

When San Francisco released right guard Mike Person, it opened up a vacancy on the offensive line with no surefire contingency plan. There’ll be a bona fide battle among several players to win that job.

Perhaps the leading candidate for the starting right guard job, Daniel Brunskill, signed his exclusive rights free agent tender on Friday. The former offensive tackle for the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football found a home last year in Santa Clara when he filled in at tackle and guard during the regular season, and played some center during the preseason. Brunskill is an impressive athlete with good versatility that could wind up earning him his first NFL starting job.

It won’t be easy for Brunskill though. Ben Garland also re-signed in San Francisco on a one-year deal. He’s another versatile lineman who can play all three interior spots, and earned himself a look with his play at center down the stretch last season filling in for Weston Richburg. There’s a chance the team strictly wants Garland to play center, but if he’s their best option at right guard, they wouldn’t hesitate to start him there and figure out a contingency plan for a Richburg injury later.

The 49ers added another candidate for the right guard job shortly after it was reported Person was gone. Tom Compton, a journeyman offensive lineman who’s been with five teams in his career and spent the last four years with four different teams, will also get a shot at the starting right guard job.

It’s also not out of the question that San Francisco uses a relatively early pick on an interior lineman that pushes all the veterans out of the running. This would probably be the ideal scenario. They’d be snagging a young talent for the offensive line, while allowing players like Brunskill, Garland and Compton to serve as high quality depth pieces.

Either way, having so many capable player up front is part of why the 49ers were able to win 13 games despite four of their five offensive line spots missing multiple games last season. If they can improve that depth after losing a starter in the offseason, the 49ers’ offense will be in great shape to have another good year up front.

49ers to sign ex-Jets OL Tom Compton to 1-year deal

The 49ers are expected to sign former Jets offensive lineman Tom Compton to a one-year deal.

The Jets will have to find a replacement for backup offensive lineman Tom Compton.

According to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, the 49ers are signing Compton to a one-year deal worth $3 million.

Compton joined the Jets on a one-year deal last offseason. He started the season out as a backup interior lineman. However, that changed when Brian Winters went down with season-ending shoulder surgery. Compton started five games in Winters’ place before ending the season on injured reserve.

With Compton gone, the Jets are going to need some help at guard. Alex Lewis and Winters have proven over their careers that they are vulnerable to getting injured, so some depth is definitely needed. Losing Compton is not a significant loss, but the Jets are going to have to find a decent guard to take his place.

Report: 49ers to sign OL Tom Compton

The 49ers added another depth piece on their offensive line.

The 49ers on Thursday added interior offensive lineman Tom Compton according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. The report of Compton’s signing came down shortly after Adam Schefter reported the team would be releasing offensive lineman Mike Person.

Compton, 30, is an eight-year NFL veteran with 35 starts in 99 games for five different teams. He spent 2016 in Atlanta when Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator, although he only played 69 offensive snaps all season. He also played for two years under Shanahan in Washington after they drafted him in the sixth round in 2012.

His one-year deal with the 49ers is worth $3 million according to Matt Barrows of the Athletic.

San Francisco now has several options to replace Person at right guard. Compton will enter into a battle with Ben Garland, Daniel Brunskill and perhaps a draft pick.

This is the first free agency add from another team this offseason. All of the other 49ers’ free agent signings have been their own players from last year’s roster.

Jets Free Agent Profile: What to do with G Tom Compton?

Should the Jets bring back Tom Compton for another season? Jets Wire evaluates the situation in its latest free agent profile?

Before Joe Douglas can focus on who he plans to target in free agency come March, he’ll have a handful of in-house decisions to make.

The Jets have 32 players set to hit the open market this offseason. Some don’t figure to factor into New York’s plans for 2020, while it’s safe to assume the Jets would like to keep others around for a while. Either way, Douglas has a lot of work to do in his first offseason on the job.

Tom Compton signed with the Jets in free agency as offensive line depth, but found himself in the starting lineup by season’s end due to a rash of injuries that plagued the unit throughout the year. Does Compton’s performance in the second half of the season warrant a return in 2020? Let’s evaluate the situation in Jets Wire’s latest free agent profile.

Pros of keeping him

You could make the case that Compton is the ideal reserve offensive lineman. He has experience as a starter and can play anywhere on the interior of the line.

Compton isn’t the most impressive mauler in the trenches, but he performs well enough to open up holes for running backs to scamper through more often than not. That could be enough to tempt Douglas into bringing the 30-year-old back next season.

Cons of keeping him

Considering the physical toll playing in the trenches takes on an offensive lineman, Compton’s age will play a role in Douglas’ decision this offseason. Compton’s durability has not been in question throughout his career, but he did suffer an injury in December that landed him on injured reserve. Considering he is getting up there in years, Compton’s mileage is certainly worth considering.

The presence of Alex Lewis complicates matters as well. Lewis is set to hit free agency, he is Douglas’ guy, while Compton was a Mike Maccagnan holdover. Douglas will likely have to pick between the two and Lewis has a major leg up. That makes Compton’s future in the Big Apple rather murky.

The verdict

Compton has a decent case to remain with the Jets, but odds are Douglas opts to bring back Lewis instead of the veteran interior lineman. Lewis is younger and has a connection with New York’s general manager. Compton is nearing the wrong side of 30 and could be done without.

Jets vs. Bills inactives: Demaryius Thomas only notable player out for New York against Buffalo

The Jets will be without Demaryius Thomas for the third straight game against the Bills.

The Jets will be as healthy as they’ve ever been in their final game against the Bills.

New York will only be without a couple of starters in Demaryius Thomas and Tom Compton. The rest of the Jets inactives are all backup players. That includes Blake Countess, Ross Travis, Jordan Willis, Kenneth Dixon, Josh Adams and Bennett Jackson.

With Thomas down once again, Vyncint Smith will likely fill his spot at wide receiver. He has done a solid job filling in as he’s had at least one catch in his last five games.

Brent Qvale will slide into Compton’s position at guard. He has missed the majority of the season with a knee injury that he suffered in training camp. This will be his first start of the season.

As for the Bills, they are resting the majority of their key starters.  The Bills’ top wide receivers John Brown and Cole Beasley are inactive. Meanwhile, their returner Andre Roberts is also out. Devin Singletary, Tre’Davious White, Dawson Knox and Shaq Lawson are also among those inactive for Buffalo.

Jets place Tom Compton on IR, sign Ben Braden to active roster

The Jets have placed Tom Compton on injured reserve and signed Ben Braden to the active roster.

Another New York Jet has landed on injured reserve.

The team announced on Saturday that it has placed offensive lineman Tom Compton on injured reserve with a calf injury. In a corresponding move, the Jets signed offensive lineman Ben Braden to the active roster.

Compton started five games this season at guard for the injured Brian Winters. The Jets signed him in the offseason after he spent the 2018 season with the Vikings.

As for Braden, he has been with the Jets practice squad since November after spending time on the Packers practice squad. Braden was originally signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan in 2017. He was on the practice squad for all of 2017 before appearing in two games in 2018.

Jets injury report: Alex Lewis, Tom Compton ruled out vs. Bills

Alex Lewis and Tom Compton have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Bills.

The Jets will go with yet another offensive line combination when they take on the Bills in Week 17.

Both Alex Lewis (ankle) and Tom Compton (calf) have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against Buffalo. That means Brent Qvale and Conor McDermott will get the start at both guard positions.

This will be the Jets’ ninth different offensive line combination they’ve used this year. Qvale is the 11th offensive lineman to start for New York in 2019.

Jamal Adams (ankle), Henry Anderson (ankle/shoulder), Robby Anderson (calf), Kelvin Beachum (back/ankles), Kenneth Dixon (illness), Brian Poole (ankle), Steve McLendon (knee/hip) and Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) are all listed as questionable. The expectation is that all of those players will be able to suit up.

Jets Injury Report: Brian Poole a new addition following Thursday’s practice

New York Jets injury report following Thursday’s practice.

Jets cornerback Brian Poole returned to the field against the Steelers in Week 16 after missing two games with a concussion. Now, there’s a chance New York’s nickel corner sits out on Sunday with a new injury.

Poole popped up on the Jets’ injury report after Thursday’s practice with an ankle injury. It can be assumed Poole suffered the injury during practice given the timing of his name being added to the injury report, which states he was limited after being a full participant on Tuesday (the Jets did not practice on Wednesday because of Christmas). The severity of Poole’s injury is currently unknown.

Tom Compton (calf), Alex Lewis (ankle), Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) and Kenneth Dixon (illness) all missed practice on Thursday. Compton, Lewis and Thomas all missed practice on Tuesday, likely would’ve missed practice on Wednesday if there was one and are currently questionable for Sunday. Dixon was a full participant in practice on Tuesday.

As for the Bills, both Shaq Lawson and Andre Roberts were non-participants in practice on Thursday. Lorenzo Alexander did not practice, but will play in Week 17 after taking a rest day on Thursday.

Jets Injury Report: Alex Lewis, Tom Compton sit out walk through

Jets injury report 12/24/19.

The Jets might be short on offensive linemen when they travel to Buffalo in Week 17.

New York had a walkthrough on Tuesday in which both Tom Compton (calf) and Alex Lewis (ankle) did not participate. Compton missed last week’s 16-10 win over the Steelers and was replaced in the starting lineup by Conor McDermott. If either Compton or Lewis cannot play against the Bills, McDermott or Brent Qvale will assume a starting spot on the offensive line. If both are not healthy enough to suit up, both McDermott and Qvale will start, giving the Jets an offensive line made up primarily of backups.

Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas (hamstring) was also a non-participant in the walkthrough. The veteran has not played since Week 14 against the Dolphins.

Jamal Adams was limited on Tuesday, but for maintenance purposes. His status for Week 17 is not up in the air.

Jets vs. Steelers inactives: Jamal Adams, Brian Poole return against Pittsburgh

Jets vs. Steelers inactives report for Week 16.

The Jets are finally getting healthy on defense.

Jamal Adams, Brian Poole, Arthur Maulet and Quinnen Williams are all returning for Gang Green against the Steelers in Week 16. Adams, Poole and Maulet have missed the Jets’ last two games, while Williams sat out in Week 15 after suffering a stinger against the Dolphins.

New York’s defense got thrashed by the Baltimore Ravens a week ago, but with three starters in the secondary back on the field and Williams back in the trenches, things just got a bit tougher for a Pittsburgh squad in need of a win to keep its playoff hopes alive.

While the Jets get healthy on defense, their offense continues to be plagued by injuries. Starting offensive lineman Tom Compton and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas are both inactive on Sunday, leaving New York with two gaping holes to fill.

The Jets will turn to either Conor McDermott or Brent Qvale on the line in place of Compton, while Vyncint Smith will see an increased role in Adam Gase’s wide receiver rotation. Josh Malone could also see some snaps at wideout after being promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster earlier this week.

As for the Steelers, they enter the week relatively healthy with arguably their best player returning. Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is back and will play for the first time in a month, giving quarterback Devlin Hodges a big-time weapon to work with.
