Toledo vs Middle Tennessee Bahamas Bowl Preview

It wasn’t the season Toledo was hoping for. It came into the year with enough talent to win the MAC Championship, but after a rough start it got hot late with three straight wins to close things out thanks to the league’s best defense and an offense that scored 49 points in three of its last four games.

A strange team, Toledo got flagged more than anyone in America, but it made up for the mistakes by leading the nation with the fewest turnovers. The small things mattered – four of the five losses were by three points or fewer. Now the team that gave the ball up less than anyone faces the team that led the nation in takeaways.

Middle Tennessee sputtered early, but turned things around in the middle of the season. Just as it looked like it was about to make a move, it lost star QB Chase Cunningham for the season before the final month.

The Blue Raider offense picked it up with a decent balance, the defense kept taking the ball away, and the two wins in the final three games – including a clutch performance at Florida Atlantic to get bowl eligible – were enough to get here.

Toledo vs Akron Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

Can Akron summon its inner Bowling Green?

The Falcons had a rough year – they lost to Akron – but they rose up on Friday to beat Ohio. Akron has had a brutal year – losing its last five games and getting blown away 38-0 by Kent State in the home finale, but it can close out with a bang with what would be the program’s best win in years.

The Zips are okay at controlling the clock, the passing game rocked for well over 300 yards against Ball State and Western Michigan in good fights, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Toledo Will Win

Akron doesn’t have a pass rush.

Toledo’s big issue is pass protection, and that’s not a problem against a Zip D that doesn’t get behind the line.

The Rockets are already bowl eligible, but losing to Akron would ruin the momentum of a decent late run of three wins in the last four games.

The ground attack has been fantastic over the last month with over 900 yards over that four game stretch, and it’s about to rip through the run defense that’s been destroyed over the second half of the season.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Toledo won’t run for 410 yards against Akron like Kent State did last week, but it’ll get to 230 with ease.

The Zips will keep on throwing, but they won’t have enough luck against the MAC’s best scoring defense. Toledo will make it four wins in the last five by getting up early and cruising from there.

Toledo vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

Toledo is bowl eligible with a win and would keep MAC East hopes alive – at least for a day.

The Rockets are rolling offensively with close to 1,200 yards of total O over the last two weeks, rolling up an almost perfect balance to beat Bowling Green last week.

The running game has been terrific all year, the offense is playing the best it has all season, and the defense continues to be the best in the league even after getting ripped up by Eastern Michigan a few weeks ago.

Ohio needs to be perfect to win this, but it doesn’t force turnovers, and Toledo leads the nation in fewest giveaways, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has finally turned it on, but it’s too late.

The team couldn’t win close games, ensured a losing season, and then it rocked back with two nice wins over Miami University and Eastern Michigan with an improved passing game and a big ground attack that’s cranking up enough big plays to matter.

For all of the positives with Toledo, it’s 5-5 for a reason.

Either the running game stalls, or the pass defense crashes in a loss to Eastern Michigan, or the run defense doesn’t work against Northern Illinois – there are too many issues.

The O line allows too many plays in the backfield, there are a bazillion penalties, and it’s a struggle to keep the chains moving. Ohio has to run well, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Toledo run defense has been terrific – for the most part.

Can the Rockets finally come up with a little bit of consistency? It hasn’t been easy to win close games, but four of the five losses were by three points or fewer.

Ohio is playing strong, though, and it’ll come up with one more big performance as it finishes up with a nice thorn-in-the-side win at home.

Toledo vs Bowling Green Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

Seriously, Toledo, when are you going to turn this whole thing around and start playing like you’re supposed to?

It’s a good team with a solid, balanced offense that can’t seem to catch or create enough breaks to make a push in the MAC West. However, the three conference losses came by a total of eight points.

Playing Bowling Green should help the cause.

The Falcons have been playing a whole lot better – they’re coming off a big win – but they’re miserable on third downs on both sides of the ball, can’t run, and the defense is having more and more problems allowing 99 points over the last two games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The offense has been just good enough to keep pressing.

The pass defense hasn’t been all that bad – at least statistically because offenses tend to run on this group – and this week it’s about throwing and throwing some more.

The Falcons have thrown for 230 yards or more in each of the last five games and now gets a Toledo pass defense that went bye-bye over the last three games.

Bowling Green won’t have any problems making this a shootout at home.

What’s Going To Happen

Time is running out on Toledo to start playing like it’s supposed to.

The run defense should keep the Falcons to around 100 yards, and the pass rush will get to QB Matt McDonald on enough key third down plays to take control of the game.

Toledo will be just fine for three quarters before opening it up late.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Eastern Michigan vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Eagles are going to bomb away.

They’ve found something that works in QB Ben Bryant – the former Cincinnati Bearcat – and they’re going to stick with it.

He has hit close to 75% of his passes over the last few weeks and has been around the 70% mark on the year, keeping the mistakes to a minimum and doing a great job of pushing the ball deep.

The Toledo D might be among the best in the MAC, but the secondary has started to slip a little bit. After dominating for most of the year – outside of getting hit hard by Notre Dame – the Rockets have allowed over 200 passing yards in each of the last two games.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Toledo Will Win

The Toledo defense continues to be terrific.

Overall, the Rocket formula should work. It gets great D, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and there’s enough happening on the ground to control the tempo of the game.

There have been some some losses over the last few weeks – close defeats to Northern Illinois and Central Michigan – but run, keep trying to run, and hope that defense can come through.

Eastern Michigan has a strong, high-powered offense thanks to the passing attack, but forget about running the ball. The Eagle O was able to grind it out early this season, but everything stalled in a big, big way over the last month.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s this simple. Can the Eastern Michigan passing game do enough to screw up Toledo’s balance and defensive style.

The Rockets are coming off their best game of the season – a stunning blowout win over Western Michigan – but if they have to get into a shootout, there’s a problem.

But Eastern Michigan is having a hard times with teams that can run.

Toledo will get to 200 yards for the first time since early October, it’ll average over five yards per pop, and the defense won’t break enough after doing a lot of bending.

Western Michigan vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Western Michigan Will Win

The offense got its groove back.

After a strange and disappointing performance against Ball State two weeks ago, the Broncos rolled for 648 yards in a blowout win over Kent State with the ground game rolling at will.

Toledo’s offense has been strangely silent. It hasn’t been awful, but it’s struggling to get past 22 points over the last several weeks because it can’t keep the chains moving.

The Rockets are awful on third downs, they’ve had massive penalty issues all year, and they don’t have an efficient enough passing game to make up for all of the negatives.

Western Michigan’s defense is great on third downs – Toledo’s going to have a tough time moving the chains, so …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Toledo Will Win

The Toledo defense has to force takeaways.

The MAC’s No. 1 defense is good enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but it would really, really help to come up with a few takeaways to hold down the high-powered Bronco attack.

If the Rocket D that forced three takeaways to stay alive against Notre Dame, and four to dropkick UMass, can make a few big plays at home, it should be in this until the end.

Western Michigan hasn’t turned the ball over in four of its last five games, but it gave it up four times against Ball State. The pass defense is good enough to keep WMU QB Kaleb Eleby from going off, but it needs the picks.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Toledo defense is good enough to pull this off, but the team can’t get hammered with penalties and the offensive line has to do its job to help keep the chains moving.

It’ll be a close, good fight for a full four quarters, but Western Michigan will be a little sharper when it needs to be in the fourth.

Toledo vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

Toledo has the versatility to move the ball however it needs to, and in this it should all happen through the air.

The team does better when it’s able to run, but Central Michigan has a bigger issue against anyone who tries to throw – LSU, FIU, and Miami University all cranked up 350 passing yards or more against the Chippewa secondary.

Start throwing, get into the backfield against a leaky CMU offensive line, and rely on the MAC’s best scoring D to come through in the clutch.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Can Central Michigan stop the Rockets from running?

Granted, the Chippewa run D stats are partially good because everyone spends so much time running on this group, but it really is solid. It allows just 3.6 yards per carry and hasn’t allowed 200 yards since the opening week 34-24 loss to Missouri.

Toledo is 3-0 when it runs for 200 yards or more, and it’s 0-3 when it doesn’t, so …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Central Michigan defense will hold Toledo to under yards, but it won’t matter.

The Rockets are coming up with well over six yards per carry over the last three games. That, combined with a strong day from the passing attack, will be enough to get them over last week’s loss to Northern Illinois and back into the MAC race with a must-have win.

This piece is almost certainly going to be wrong.

Two years ago we didn’t get Memphis – who ended up getting the New Year’s Six Bowl nod – and last season we weren’t even in the right zip code when it came to the rise of Coastal Carolina and Louisiana.

But we did have Cincinnati on the 2020 list.

So far in the College Football Playoff era, six teams from the Group of Five conferences – the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt – have been the highest-ranked conference champion in the final CFP rankings to get the New Year’s Six spot. None of them have been able to get into the playoff, but if the tournament expands, that will change.

Boise State beat Arizona in the first shot for the Group of Five, and Houston followed it up with a win over Florida State. Western Michigan, Memphis, Cincinnati, and UCF (twice) are the other schools to get the big spotlight game, going 3-4 overall and generally playing very, very well in the losses.

This year, the Group of Five champion – if it’s not in the College Football Playoff – will either play in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl or the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

So what does it take for a Group of Five program to get that New Year’s Six slot? Realistically – but not technically – 1) needs to go unbeaten or finish with just one loss, 2) it should have at least one signature win to impress the College Football Playoff committee that does the rankings, and 3), as part of the requirement, it has to win its conference championship.

Here’s hoping that a few teams will rise up and shock the world, but assume that one of these teams will likely have the best shot at getting the New Year’s Six nod.

Let’s start with a total cop-out.

College Football Group of Five Programs in the New Year’s Six Hunt

5. San Jose State at Nevada winner

CFN 2021 San Jose State Preview

Boise State is always the instant pick from the Mountain West to have a shot at the New Year’s Six bowl bid, but this year’s team is undergoing a coaching overhaul and it has a few tweaks it has to make, but there are three problems …

Non-conference schedule, non-conference schedule, non-conference schedule.

The Broncos should be strong enough in a relatively weak Mountain Division to get to the Mountain West title game, but they have to start the season at UCF, host Oklahoma State, and they have to go to BYU.

If they win all three they should probably be No. 1 on this list, if they win two of the three they’ll be in the hunt, and if they win just one, forget it. Throw in the road games at San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State, and it’s a tough ask.

CFN 2021 Nevada Preview

From the West, Fresno State will be dangerous, San Diego State always has a puncher’s chance to get to the NY6, and Hawaii will be plucky, but it should – like last year – come down to the showdown between San Jose State and Nevada.

The Spartans have to go to USC, but they other three non-conference games are against Western Michigan, New Mexico State and Southern Utah. If they’re good enough to win the Mountain West title, they’ll be good enough to win all three of those.

They don’t have to play Boise State and get San Diego State and Fresno State at home. However, they start November with a trip to Reno.

The Wolf Pack are loaded with high-octane offensive talent, the overall experience is in place, and the coaching staff is hitting its stride. They have to at least split the road games against Cal and Kansas State, and they follow that up with a trip to Boise State. Throw in road games at San Diego State and Fresno State, and there’s a problem.

However, get by San Jose State, go on to win the Mountain West title, and they should be in the hunt.
