Akron Zips Preview 2022

It’s been a rough run for the Akron program. The last winning season was 2015, the last bowl appearance was 2017, and the fans enjoyed a grand total of three wins over the last three years – two of them against Bowling Green.

But the program got a good one in new head coach Joe Moorhead. He rocked in four years at Fordham, was great as the offensive coordinator at Penn State, and he was fine Mississippi State for two years before getting shoved out. The guy knows offense – he handled the Oregon attack over the last few years – and now he has to work minor miracles to get the up-tempo attack going.

Akron Zips Preview 2022: Offense

The coaching will be better and the system should be stronger, but the offensive playmakers have to emerge. None of that matters if the offensive line isn’t far, far better after finishing last in the nation in sacks allowed, and without much of a running game to count on. For good and for bad, just two steady starters return to the front around veteran LT Xavior Gray.

Now the running attack has to follow. Minnesota transfer Cam Wiley was a great get to help bump up the production along with leading rusher Jonzell Norrils. The Zips only ran for 1,463 yards and eight scores – that’s about to change.

Zach Gibson took over the quarterback duties last year, but now he’s off to Georgia Tech. DJ Irons is a very big, very interesting quarterback who wasn’t all that bad before getting banged up. He’s a potential playmaker to work around, but leading receiver Konata Mumpfield is gone to Pitt and second-leading target Michael Mathison is done, too.

There are parts around TE Tristian Bank including LSU transfer Alex Adams – the system will make the receivers shine.

Akron Zips Preview 2022: Defense

The D might take a little while longer to get going than the offense. The Zips didn’t do much on the offensive side, and they really didn’t do much for long stretches defensively. There wasn’t enough of a pass rush and the run defense was among the worst in the nation.

On the plus side, the Zips are loaded with veteran tacklers. Jeslord Boateng leads the a good-sized linebacking corps with a decent number of options. The hitters are there, but the pass rush has to come from some where – Boateng and two others tied for the team lead with 1.5 sacks. There’s just enough bulk to work in a good rotation on the nose.

There’s a good chance the secondary is among the team’s biggest strengths if it gets any help from the pass rush. Senior Charles Amankwaa led the team with three picks, Jaylen Kelly-Powell is a good hitter with 73 tackles last season, and there’s enough versatility to play around with the options.

Michigan State football’s non-conference opponents name starting QB

MSU’s non-conference opponents have named their starting QB’s ahead of the season beginning

Michigan State is gearing up to start their 2022 season, looking to build upon an 11-2 season in 2021 that included a Peach Bowl victory. In 2022, the Spartans will be squaring off with Western Michigan, Akron and Washington in a road trip to Seattle.

With the season approaching these teams are starting to figure out what their depth charts are going to look like. More importantly, starting quarterbacks are being named.

Take a look at who will be starting under center against Michigan State during 2022’s non-conference slate:

Toledo vs Akron Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

Can Akron summon its inner Bowling Green?

The Falcons had a rough year – they lost to Akron – but they rose up on Friday to beat Ohio. Akron has had a brutal year – losing its last five games and getting blown away 38-0 by Kent State in the home finale, but it can close out with a bang with what would be the program’s best win in years.

The Zips are okay at controlling the clock, the passing game rocked for well over 300 yards against Ball State and Western Michigan in good fights, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Toledo Will Win

Akron doesn’t have a pass rush.

Toledo’s big issue is pass protection, and that’s not a problem against a Zip D that doesn’t get behind the line.

The Rockets are already bowl eligible, but losing to Akron would ruin the momentum of a decent late run of three wins in the last four games.

The ground attack has been fantastic over the last month with over 900 yards over that four game stretch, and it’s about to rip through the run defense that’s been destroyed over the second half of the season.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Toledo won’t run for 410 yards against Akron like Kent State did last week, but it’ll get to 230 with ease.

The Zips will keep on throwing, but they won’t have enough luck against the MAC’s best scoring defense. Toledo will make it four wins in the last five by getting up early and cruising from there.

Kent State vs Akron Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

This matters for bowl eligibility.

It’s all about next week against Miami University no matter what – the winner ends up taking the East and going to the MAC Championship – but the Golden Flashes aren’t going to want to worry about whether or not they’ll need that to get to a swag bag game in some exotic locale.

The FlashFast style of offense continues to destroy everything in its path, leading the MAC in total offense, rushing offense, and leading the nation in turnover margin. This team can turn the lights out in a hurry with its attack going against an Akron defense that doesn’t stop anything, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Akron Will Win

The Kent State defense has been miserable.

It gives up close to 500 yards per game, it can’t stop anyone’s running game, and it’s even worse against the pass, allowing close to 300 yards an outing. Akron might be struggling overall, but the passing game has clicked with over 300 yards in each of the last two games.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Akron interim head coach Oscar Rodriguez Jr. might not have a win, but the offense hasn’t been that bad. It’ll crank things up at home with one of its best performances of the year, but it won’t matter.

The Akron D has allowed 425 yards or more in each of the last four games and in six of the last seven, and it’s about to get hit for close to 600 yards.

Akron vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

The Tom Arth era ended at Akron even though the team didn’t play all that poorly in the loss to Ball State.

Oscar Rodriguez Jr. takes over a team with a decent passing attack that’s been able to hit 200 yards on a regular basis. The offense hasn’t been totally awful, it’s not bad at controlling the clock, and it should be able to move the chains on a suspect Western Michigan secondary that doesn’t make enough big plays.

Western Michigan has been a massive disappointment, losing three of its last four games with some of the best talent in the MAC. This might be an energized Zip team that will take a whole lot of chances and against a defense that’s giving up way too many points over the last several weeks.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Western Michigan Will Win

To be fair, the defense wasn’t really the problem against Central Michigan last week – the special teams and punt coverage squad was an issue.

Akron is good at controlling the clock, but Western Michigan is amazing at it.

There might be issues defensively, but it’s great at coming up with third down stops and it’s terrific against the run. Akron isn’t going to move the ball a lick on the ground, and while it might try to bomb away, it’s not going to be consistent enough.

The Broncos just have to run a little better.

The offense hasn’t been as good as it should be because it’s not running enough – or effectively enough. That has to change this week to settle down the offense and take the win by having the ball for 38 minutes and grinding out drives against a Zip D that can’t get off the field.

What’s Going To Happen

Okay, Western Michigan, enough it enough.

The MAC West is a total mess, but even at 2-3 in the division and tied for last, the Broncos can still make a little bit of noise in the race.

There’s too much traffic, though, after losing to Toledo and Central Michigan. Just getting bowl eligible would be good enough for now, and it’ll be done with ease.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Ball State vs Akron Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

Ball State just has to keep things moving.

Akron has a hard time on third downs, it doesn’t stop the run, and it doesn’t have any one thing it can do well defensively.

Miami doesn’t have a balanced offense, and yet it was able to run and throw for well over 200 yards in its win over the Zips a few weeks ago.

Buffalo is struggling, but it was also able to come up with well over 200 yards both on the ground and in the air in a 45-10 win.

Ball State hasn’t been consistent on the ground, but it can move a bit when it has to. The passing attack should be enough on one side, and the pass rush against an offensive front that’s the worst in the nation in pass protection shouldn’t have too many issues.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Akron Will Win

Akron can control the clock.

It’s able to hold the ball for over 32 minutes, and Ball State with its style is among the worst in college football in the time of possession battle.

The Zips might be having a disastrous time defensively, but for the most part they’re keeping games from getting out of hand. Again, Ball State’s running game isn’t anything amazing. As long as Akron is able to keep Cardinal QB Drew Plitt from getting into a groove, this should stay relatively low scoring and close.

What’s Going To Happen

There can’t be any slipping for Ball State as it tries to stay in a tight MAC West race. Akron will deliver a few interesting shots, but there won’t be enough of them.

Ball State will run well as the game goes on, but it’ll be the overall ability to move the chains and keep drives alive – even if it doesn’t win the time of possession battle – that will take Akron out of its shell. That’s when the takeaways will come for the Cardinal D.

Buffalo vs Akron Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

It’s been a bit of a grind at times, but Buffalo has been able to stay in every game but the loss to Nebraska.

The rushing attack was great against Kent State, the passing game came through against Ohio, and overall the offense is strong on third downs and keeping things moving. It all starts with an offensive line that’s among the best in the nation at not allowing plays in the backfield, and it’s giving everyone enough time to not have to force anything.

Buffalo doesn’t have a turnover problem. However …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Akron Will Win

The Buffalo run defense is a problem.

The stats from the Ohio game are a tad skewed – there was a 99-yard dash in there – but the Bulls have allowed 200 yards or more in five of the last six games. Akron’s running game is – to be nice about it – spotty, but it has to keep hammering away to see if something can break. Even 120 yards would be strong enough make a huge difference.

Akron doesn’t have a big turnover problem, the passing game has been the most efficient in the MAC – Zach Gibson has done a solid job over the last two weeks for DJ Irons with three touchdown passes against both Bowling Green and Miami University – and …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Akron really pull off a second MAC win in the last three games?

Buffalo has a horrible habit of playing up or down to the competition, but like the Ohio win, it’ll find a way to come out with the late play needed to survive. Akron just doesn’t have the running game needed to take advantage of the bad UB D.
