Mountain West Football: Examining Each Opponent’s Week 4 Depth Chart

What stands out in the depth charts released by each of the Mountain West’s seven Week 4 non-conference opponents?

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

What to keep in mind before kickoff.

UTEP (link to depth chart)

What stands out: We already knew about the Miners’ veteran defensive line, but Cal Wallerstedt has been a revelation behind them at middle linebacker.

Why that could be important: With Boise State’s long-standing offensive struggles, it wouldn’t be too much of a shock if Wallerstedt made a number of big plays like he did against New Mexico last Saturday. He has 23 total tackles and leads all Conference USA defenders with 5.5 tackles for loss to go along with three sacks, making the most of his first extended stint in the starting lineup.

Toledo (link to game notes, depth chart on page 4)

What stands out: The Rockets have by and large used a committee to try and replace the production from star running back Bryant Koback, so Micah Kelly and Jacquez Stuart appearing on the two-deep might be notable.

Why that could be important: Well, Koback hasn’t been so easy to replace. The former Toledo standout averaged 6.75 yards per carry with 15 touchdowns in 2021, but Kelly and Stuart have managed a combined 4.0 YPC through three games. Peny Boone and Willie Shaw have also seen equal shares of the workload so far, too, and haven’t been much better, so there’s a path to victory for San Diego State if they can keep their focus on quarterback Dequan Finn, the team’s leading rusher.

Sacramento State (link to depth chart)

What stands out: Injuries cut short his 2019 and 2021 seasons while COVID erased 2020 inbetween, but senior linebacker Armon Bailey is finally on the field once again and anchoring the middle of the Hornets defense.

Why that could be important: The Vallejo native has always been a tantalizing prospect when it comes to generating havoc, as he has 7.5 tackles for loss and 53 tackles in 21 career games, which could pose a problem for a Colorado State offensive line that has often struggled mightily to give Clay Millen adequate time to throw.

LSU

What stands out: As noted by WBRZ’s Corey Rholdon, the Tigers started two freshman at offensive tackle last week against Mississippi State: Emery Jones and Will Campbell.

Why that could be important: Campbell had already started all three games at left tackle, but Jones’s strong performance against the Bulldogs justified kicking veteran Charles Turner inside to guard, which could help the unit coalesce more strongly in the long term. For as good as the New Mexico defense has looked to this point, LSU will pose their toughest challenge yet.

New Mexico State (link to depth chart)

What stands out: The Aggies have already utilized three different offensive line combinations in four games, with the latest move shifting senior tackle Gabriel Preciado from the left side of the line to the right while elevating redshirt freshman Shiyazh Pete to the lineup at left tackle.

Why that could be important: With six sacks and 21 tackles allowed for loss so far this season, New Mexico State is clearly looking for a unit that can stablize the offense for the long-term. For a Hawaii defense whose pass rush is slowly coming around, picking up three sacks in the last two games, this could be another opportunity to produce with an eye on the long term.

BYU (link to depth chart)

What stands out: The Cougars haven’t made that many changes to their starting lineup so far, but one switch to note is at defensive tackle, where Logan Lutui had his first career start against Oregon in place of a banged-up Tyler Batty.

Why that could be important: The Weber State transfer held his own against the Ducks, posting four total tackles in BYU’s loss. Head coach Kalani Sitake has already mentioned that Batty is closer to being back in action among the injured Cougars but, regardless of the veteran’s status, keeping Lutui and the rest of the Cougars defensive line out of the backfield will be what helps Wyoming put an upset bid together.

Western Michigan

What stands out: Redshirt freshman tight end Blake Bosma, just a week and a half removed from earning a scholarship, was ahead of Joshua Burgett on the most recent depth chart.

Why that could be important: With projected starter Austin Hence out for the foreseeable future, Bosma appears to be the one to hold down the fort in his stead. Though he was held without a catch against Pitt last week, he had five receptions in the opener against Ball State, providing a useful security blanket for quarterback Jack Salopek.

Western Michigan Broncos Preview 2022: Season Prediction, Breakdown, Key Games, Players

Western Michigan College Football Preview 2022: Team breakdown, season prediction, keys to the campaign, and what you need to know

Western Michigan continues to be SO frustrating.

The talent is there, but the consistent big seasons and wins aren’t. That’s a common theme in the MAC West, like with Toledo, but it just doesn’t make any sense.

The Broncos went 13-1 under PJ Fleck in 2016 and have been solid ever since – the program hasn’t had a losing season since 2013 – but last year’s team was No. 1 in the MAC in total defense, No. 2 in total offense, the running game was great, the skill guys were fantastic, the pass rush was among the best in the country, and the O line put up a phenomenal season, and …

Nope. Four MAC losses in a six game stretch killed the fun.

Beating Pitt was nice, and rolling a Nevada team without a slew of key parts was a good way to finish, but this needs to be a MAC Championship powerhouse, and that’s going to be tough this season.

Enough talent returns to be in the mix, but the schedule isn’t any easier, a slew of stars are gone, and it’s going to be hard to improve too much.

It’ll be a bowl season and another winning campaign, but Western Michigan is overdue to surprise on the positive side.

Western Michigan Broncos Preview 2022: Offense

The offense was terrific, but there’s some reworking to do. The Broncos finished 12th in the nation in total offense and averaged 32.5 points per game thanks to a strong rushing offense and good balance. It’s all going to start with …

The offensive line has to be back to form. It was one of the strongest in the MAC last season doing a great job at keeping teams out of the backfield with the high sack total mostly coming from then-QB Kaleb Eleby trying to make things happening.

Three starters have to be replaced, but getting Eleasah Anderson from Sam Houston State – and Baylor before that – to fit in at left tackle is a plus. Jake Gideon is a good one in the interior – he’ll likely work at center – and there’s more reshuffling from there.

The rushing combination of Sean Tyler and La’Darius Jefferson is fantastic. These two combined for close to 2,000 yards with 19 touchdowns with the speed of Tyler and power of Jefferson working in a good rotation.

It’s going to be so, so hard to replace Eleby. He was an ultra-efficient playmaker who didn’t make a lot of mistakes and did a great job of pushing the ball down the field.

Now it’s a fight for the job with backup Jack Salopek a smallish passer with good accuracy and Mareyohn Hrabowski a big, tough option who can do a little of everything. Also entering the mix is Stone Hollenbach transferring from Alabama.

Skyy Moore was unstoppable with 96 catches for 1,293 yards and ten scores, but now he’s off in the Kansas City Chief attack. Third leading target Jaylen Hall is at WKU and top tight end Anthony Torres is off to Toledo. However, Corey Crooms is back after averaging over 17 yards per catch with 44 catches and six scores.

Western Michigan Broncos Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was among the best in the nation at generating sacks, it was second in the nation in third down stops, and it finished first in the MAC in total defense allowing just 330 yards and 28 points per game.

Seven starters are back, but some of the star power is gone. The big problem is replacing …

Ali Fayad. He was the main man who got into the backfield, and Ralph Holley is done from the interior. Trying to help at tackle is Purdue transfer Bryce Austin, and Braden Fiske is a good playmaker on the nose. Andre Carter and Marshawn Kneeland aren’t Fayad, but they can get behind the line.

The linebacking corps is the team’s second biggest strength after running back. The top three tacklers are back with Corvin Moment, Zaire Barnes, and Ryan Selig all active tacklers with all-star potential.

The secondary has to pick off more passes, but it can tackle and it should be able to hold up just fine. Dorian Jackson broke up 12 passes and led the team with two picks, and in comes Anthony Romphf from Purdue to work at the other corner.

Delano Ware is a good veteran who made 40 stops and veteran Bricen Garner is back as a longtime part of the mix after finishing third on the team in tackles in 2020 before missing time last year.

Michigan State football names captains for season opener

MSU has announced who will be the captains for week one against Western Michigan

Mel Tucker doesn’t like to name captains for the whole season, instead, Michigan State does captains on a week to week basis. It is something to keep the players, and the fans, engaged each and every week.

Tucker will be continuing that tradition this year, selecting captains every week seperately, and the team has announced who will be leading the Spartans into the season opener against Western Michigan.

Quarterback Payton Thorne, safety Xavier Henderson and punter Bryce Baringer will be MSU’s captains in week one.

Michigan State football’s non-conference opponents name starting QB

MSU’s non-conference opponents have named their starting QB’s ahead of the season beginning

Michigan State is gearing up to start their 2022 season, looking to build upon an 11-2 season in 2021 that included a Peach Bowl victory. In 2022, the Spartans will be squaring off with Western Michigan, Akron and Washington in a road trip to Seattle.

With the season approaching these teams are starting to figure out what their depth charts are going to look like. More importantly, starting quarterbacks are being named.

Take a look at who will be starting under center against Michigan State during 2022’s non-conference slate:

San Jose State Football: First Look at 2022 Non-Conference Opponents

Portland State | Auburn | Western Michigan | New Mexico State

The San Jose State Spartans hope to exact a measure of revenge against the Western Michigan Broncos when they visit the South Bay in Week 4.

Not a lot went right for the Spartans in last year’s matchup, but the Broncos didn’t really reach their ceiling, either, and now must start again without some of last year’s major contributors on offense. With both teams in relatively the same position headed into 2022, how different could WMU look this fall?

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan

Conference: Mid-American

Series History: Western Michigan leads the all-time series, 1-0.

2021 Record: 8-5 (4-4 MAC)

Head Coach: Tim Lester (sixth year at Western Michigan; 32-25 with Broncos, 62-48 overall). The highlight of WMU’s season was a road upset of eventual ACC champion Pitt, but you’d be forgiven if you had a sense the Broncos left something on the table overall. Their only MAC West division win was, oddly enough, against conference champion Northern Illinois and their Quick Lane Bowl victory over Nevada was watered down by the Wolf Pack’s mass exodus in the days before kickoff.

Key Players

Sean Tyler, RB

WMU’s passing game got a lot of attention in 2021, but Tyler had a convincing case as the offense’s most important player. He finished fourth in the MAC with 1,150 rushing yards and his 6.46 yards per attempt ranked third, while he accounted for 13 total touchdowns as a rusher, pass catcher, and kick returner.

Dorian Jackson, CB

Jackson played as actively as any defensive back in the MAC last year, breaking up 12 passes while pulling down two interceptions and adding 25 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. If San Jose State looks to re-establishing its aerial bonafides, he’s the most likely candidate to gum up those plans on gameday.

Corvin Moment, LB

Moment will be key as the Broncos look to replace a great deal of last year’s defensive havoc. He earned a third-team all-MAC nod in 2021 after collecting 68 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles, but what’s most telling about his value is a Pro Football Focus overall grade of 72.4 that was second among all linebackers in the conference.

Corey Crooms, WR

Now that Skyy Moore is in the NFL, could Crooms be next? Last year, he snagged 44 catches for 768 yards and six touchdowns, his 17.45 yards per catch good enough to finish third among MAC pass catchers. It’s also noteworthy that Crooms had more 30-yard receptions (seven) than both Moore and Jaylen Hall (six).

Jack Salopek, QB

After serving as Kaleb Eleby’s understudy last season, 2022 is Salopek’s time to shine. He only threw five passes in mop-up duty in 2021, but he’s also a former three-star recruit who set numerous high school football records in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

Overview:

Offense

As is often the case among good to great MAC teams, Western Michigan knew how to move the ball in 2021. The Broncos finished in a tie for 28th among all FBS teams by averaging 6.34 yards per play, neck-and-neck with Michigan State and just ahead of Fresno State, and they were 24th by points per drive and 13th in available yards percentage earned per drive. The task now for new offensive coordinator Jeff Thorne, who arrives in Kalamazoo after a very successful stint at Division III North Central College, is replicating that production while navigating substantial turnover.

Salopek’s development will be key, but the running back tandem of Tyler and La’Darius Jefferson (185 carries, 836 yards, ten touchdowns) is probably the most talented in the MAC. Having Crooms down the field to generate big plays will also help, but he’s the only wide receiver or tight end who had even ten receptions a year ago. Big things will be expected of former three-star recruits like Kaevion Mack and Henry Wilson Jr.

The same is mostly true of the offensive line, which returns just two starters in center Jacob Gideon and guard Dylan Deatherage from 2021. Bringing in a seasoned veteran like Eleasah Anderson, who started 25 games at Sam Houston State, will help, but the unit might skew younger overall as new faces step up into more prominent roles. WMU has one of the nation’s best stuff rates on offense last season at just 11.6%, but that might be tough to duplicate.

Defense

While the offense cooked, the defense ended up being more lukewarm despite some standout individual performances. The Broncos finished 90th nationally in yards per play allowed, 78th in points per drive allowed, and 66th in available yards percentage allowed per drive. What they did well was create havoc, finishing third in the country with a 10.8% sack rate and sixth with a 23.8% stuff rate, but that was with Ralph Holley and Ali Fayad, both of whom are now gone.

There are more than a few candidates to replace their production, though, not just Moment but also linebacker Zaire Barnes (68 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks) and defensive linemen Braden Fiske (eight TFLs, four sacks) and Marshaun Kneeland (eight TFLs, 4.5 sacks). One other area they’ll look for improvement within is in creating turnovers since their 13 takeaways was the fewest in a full season since at least 2009, and much of that came down to a secondary which paced the MAC with a 55.1% opponents’ completion rate but had just four interceptions.

To that end, Jackson’s production could go a long way but transfers like Delano Ware (Illinois) and Therran Coleman (Pitt), as well as returns to form from returning Broncos like Bricen Garner, could lead to a rebound.

Early Prediction

Both San Jose State and Western Michigan head into 2022 in relatively similar positions as fringe conference title contenders, so the team that comes out on top here will be able to solidify that perception. The biggest question is whether the Spartans offense can rediscover its mojo against a Broncos defense that has talent but can be pushed, so while it’s likely to be a back-and-forth affair, expect that the home team should be able to gut out a close win.

San Jose State 37, Western Michigan 31
