The holidays are finally behind us, which means soccer fans can open their real presents. The Champions League is back and the Round of 16 promises to be must-see TV. Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham hosts Bundesliga title contenders RB Leipzig on Wednesday in the first leg of their knockout round tie. While one club may be more recognizable to the Champions League scene, this matchup is about as even and unpredictable as it gets.

Spurs actually spent money in the January transfer window to improve their floundering squad. The additions of winger Steven Bergwijn and midfielder Gedson Fernandes has given Mourinho some interesting options when it comes to his best lineup. Tottenham’s recent form since those moves has improved, suggesting the morale has also risen. A return to the Champions League next season now looks within reach domestically, but its attention must be focused on a very good Leipzig team. It will be difficult for the Spurs without the services of the injured Son Heung-min or Harry Kane up top, but the talent is there to make another deep run in this competition.

The winter break was not kind to RB Leipzig. After becoming first-half champions in the Bundesliga, the team has come back with inconsistent form. RB Leipzig relinquished its lead atop the table to Bayern Munich and finds itself in a neck-and-neck battle. Life won’t get much easier in Europe when the team faces a Spurs team hungry to prove last season’s appearance in the final was no fluke. To make matters worse, Leipzig’s leading scorer Timo Werner has gone cold in front of goal. If the Germans have a chance to get past this round, the team needs him to rediscover his first half form.

The Champions League finally returns on Tuesday as the Round of 16 begins with a bang. Borussia Dortmund, with the massive support of the Yellow Wall behind the team, will host Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of this much-anticipated knockout round match. The two star-studded teams have changed quite a bit in the past few months. It should be a fascinating two legs between two great sides.

Lucien Favre has survived the ax hanging above his head and got Dortmund back on track. The winter transfer window signing of striker phenom Erling Haaland from RB Salzburg has helped the Black and Yellow quite a bit. Since the Norwegian’s arrival, Dortmund’s attack has been flying. He’s formed instant chemistry with fellow young star Jadon Sancho to form one of Germany’s most deadly attacking duos in a very short time. Thanks to a recent rule change regarding cup-tying players, Haaland will be eligible to play for Dortmund in the knockout stages despite being one of the competition’s leaders with eight goals for Salzburg.

Unlike previous seasons, the timing of the UCL knockout rounds is lining up nicely for PSG. Neymar appears ready to return from injury for the important stretch of the season instead of missing it. Meanwhile, the rest of PSG’s talented squad is relatively fit and ready to go. Kylian Mbappe will be the man to keep an eye on in this match. Dortmund’s defense has been its biggest weak spot this season. If Mbappe can use his blazing speed and incredible intelligence to make life even worse for Dortmund’s back line, the Frenchmen could have a huge impact in the 180 minutes.

How to Watch Atletico Madrid vs. Liverpool, Champions League Live Stream, Schedule, TV Channel, Start Time

Watch Madrid vs. Liverpool Live Online.

Two clubs that play contrasting styles will create one of the most anticipated matchups of the Champions League round of 16. With Atletico Madrid’s defense squaring-off with the powerful attack of Liverpool, the side that is best able to impose its will could put itself in prime position to advance to the quarterfinals.

Atletico Madrid has been strong at home this Champions League campaign, earning seven of its 10 points in the group stage at home. The one time the team dropped points at home in the group stage was against Juventus, a team whose explosive attack is comparable to that of Liverpool. In order to keep up with Liverpool’s scoring ability, the Madrid attack will need to play at a high level. Alvaro Morata struggled as a Premier League player with Chelsea but will have a chance to redeem himself against the Premier League leaders.

Liverpool finished at the top of its group in the Champions League and will start its knockout stage run on the road. The defending European champions have the most dangerous strike force in Europe with Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane combining to form a potent offense. With the Premier League well in hand at this point in the season, Liverpool will be able to give this competition its full attention, which could be bad news for Atleti.

Report: Warriors’ television ratings falling during 2019-20 season

During the 2019-20 season, the Golden State Warriors’ television numbers are falling at a massive rate.

The 2019-20 season has brought change upon the Golden State Warriors from top to bottom. While the Warriors embraced innovation with their new arena in San Francisco, the team didn’t want to modify anything when it came to the on-court product.

Over the past five seasons, the Golden State Warriors have been a premier team in the NBA, registering five consecutive Finals appearances. On top of winning, the Warriors rolled out one of the most dynamic starting lineups in basketball, featuring four All-Star players.

In the 2019-20 season, things are far from where they once were. The Warriors sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with a league-worst 12-43 record.

At the center of Golden State’s struggles has been injuries to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Curry has only played four games all season due to a hand injury while Thompson has missed the entire year as he recovers from a knee injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals.

In Golden State’s down season, the Warriors’ television ratings have suffered. According to the sports media and analysis outlet Awful Announcing, Golden State’s television broadcast flagship NBC Sports Bay Area is down 66 % when it comes to Warriors games.

Via Awful Announcing:

The Golden State Warriors, who have dominated the NBA’s local ratings for the last few years, saw their ratings decline by a staggering 66% on NBC Sports Bay Area. That’s the second-largest decline in the league (behind only the Denver Nuggets, down 72% on Altitude, which is beset by carriage issues), and has also knocked the Dubs out of the league’s top five overall.

Although things are bleak, the Golden State Warriors could receive a jolt in the final months of the season. Reports point to March as the target month for Curry’s return from his broken hand. A March returns to the floor would give the Warriors around 20 games with their former Most Valuable Player.

Although the Warriors are out of the playoff picture, the impact of Curry’s return turns Golden State into must-watch television. How the All-Star guard meshes with new teammates like Andrew Wiggins gives fans a peek into the future.

Former L.A. Laker Rick Fox says rumor of his death ‘shook a lot of people’ in his life

In a conversation on NBA on TNT this week, former Laker Rick Fox says the death of Kobe Bryant has been overwhelming. Not only because he lost one of his good friends and former teammates, but also because of what his own family went through on Sunday.

WATCH: NBA on TNT analysts defend John Beilein, say Cavs are ‘soft’

Cavaliers first-year head coach John Beilein is getting support from a couple respected former NBA greats.

Cavaliers first-year head coach John Beilein is getting support from a couple respected former NBA greats.

The Cleveland coach issued individual apologies to his players this week and a sweeping apology to the team after using the word “thugs,” in reference to the team’s playing style during a film review session Wednesday, all according to ESPN.

But Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t think Beilein is the problem. On Inside the NBA on TNT, the Hall of Fame hooper and analyst said late Thursday, “If you have to be apologized to for your coach calling you a thug, you ain’t gonna never win, you’re soft, ok…. They’re not playing like thugs, so I believe him when he said they’re playing like slugs…. Stop being so sensitive. Listen, I grew up in the ’80s I got called worse than ‘slug,’ trust me.”

Beilein’s apology insisted that his critique used the wrong word, that he was going for ‘slugs.’ Either way, Charles Barkley is also backing Beilein, saying that the Cavs need to focus on the court instead of picking apart a coach who is trying to help a struggling franchise win.

“To be complaining about a coach who’s coming in, trying to make y’all work on fundamentals when y’all stink, make y’all watch film, make y’all practice hard,” Barkley said. “This is starting to be a joke.”

O’Neal added that he believes the controversy was a move by someone in the locker room to have Beilein removed, asking how the information got out and asking what happened to the old code of ‘What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room?.”

To Shaq’s point, The Athletic reported in December that the players were unhappy with the way the new coach is running things.

But the Cavs are sticking with Beilein with the team just a couple spots above the last place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Second place in Group D is up for grabs on the final matchday of the Champions League group stage. Atletico Madrid comes into the last day with a one-point cushion over Bayer Leverkusen and must take care of business against last place Lokomotiv Moscow to earn a spot in the Round of 16.

Recent form will be worrying for Diego Simeone’s side. Losses against Barcelona in La Liga and Juventus in the Champions League jump out at you, but the team’s most recent 0-0 draw with Villarreal is the main reason the team is in seventh in the league. Atletico Madrid’s inconsistency has put the team in this position of possibly not making the knockout rounds. If that happens, it would be a huge blow for the ambitious club after such a busy summer of transfer dealings.

Leverkusen has to go up against group winner Juve in the concurrent match. This could be good or bad news from Atleti’s perspective. With the group already in hand, Maurizio Sarri could use this chance to rest some of his best players. If that happens and the Germans get full points, the pressure to get a win will be immense.

As always seems to be the case with a Simeone-led side, it’s scoring goals that’s the main problem. The team has only scored 16 goals in 16 La Liga matches so far and just about kept that same pace in Europe with six goals in five played. A stout defense is a given, but can the team find the back of the net when it matters most?

For Lokomotiv, while extremely unlikely, the team has an outside shot at getting a Europa League spot if it beats Atleti, Juve beats Leverkusen and the team overtakes the Germans in goal differential.

Chelsea is desperate for three points when it hosts Champions League foes Lille on Tuesday. The Blues hope to climb from third in Group H and clinch a place in the round of 16. Frank Lampard is on the verge of booking knockout stage football in his first season managing in the Champions League, but he’ll have to leapfrog Ajax or Valencia in order to do so.

The Godenzonen lead Group H by two points and host Valencia on Tuesday, with Los Che level on eight points with the Blues ahead by virtue of goal difference. Chelsea has to better Valencia’s result in Amsterdam if it’s to progress in the competition, but Lille looks to have regained form just as the west Londoners have lost it.

Christophe Galtier’s men have won three on the bounce after shrugging off a recent stretch of five matches without a victory, moving to third in Ligue 1. Nevertheless, the French outfit has taken one point from a possible 15 in Europe this season and may be lacking motivation midweek.

That being said, Chelsea looks vulnerable after winning once in its last five outings and dropping 3-1 away to Everton on Saturday. Lampard’s side is still fourth in the Premier League and safe by five points, but failure to win on Tuesday would mark a new low for this term.

Central defender Antonio Rudiger could make his second appearance of the season following a groin injury that’s kept him sidelined since September. Lampard even suggested Rudiger could start in the absence of injured Fikayo Tomori.

Lille forward Timothy Weah will play no part at Stamford Bridge due to injury, while Reinildo and Adama Soumaoro are doubtful. Galtier could make widespread changes to his team considering Lille’s certain fourth-place finish, although some stars may crave one final appearance in continental competition.

Chelsea can still finish first in Group H should it win and Ajax draw at home to Los Che. The Londoners hold a 5-4 head-to-head advantage over the Dutch giants and will snatch the last seed in that scenario, although either Ajax or Valencia is sure to win the pool with a victory.
