Rejoice, 12’s!

Rejoice, 12’s!

After wishing and waiting for years to see the beloved Seattle Seahawks throwback uniforms in action, the time is coming soon. The Seahawks officially announced they will don the iconic royal blue and silver threads in Week 8 against the Cleveland Browns.

The Seahawks announced the throwbacks would be making their comeback last year during their Week 12 showdown with the Raiders. This was made possible by the NFL finally amending their one-helmet policy and allowing teams to have a second, alternate helmet.

Seattle wore the royal and silver uniforms from their inaugural season in 1976 until 2001. Aside from a few tweaks here or there, this was the look of the Seahawks – and to many older fans, still very much is.

It is interesting Seattle chose a Week 8 showdown with the Browns to unveil the uniforms. Cleveland has a classic, all-white retro uniform themselves. Perhaps the Browns will wear these in a sort of “turn-back-the-clock” themed Sunday afternoon?

Although Week 8 will mark the first time the Seahawks have worn these uniforms since 2001, it might not be the last this year. Team president Chuck Arnold hinted Seattle could wear these uniforms twice in 2023.

If this is the case, I predict it will be during the Thanksgiving Day game against the San Francisco 49ers. Just my speculation on the matter.

Seahawks throwback uniforms officially returning in 2023

Now they are set to make their triumphant return roughly 22 years later.

Seahawks fans, rejoice! For years, the 12th Man has clamored for the return of the classic Seahawks throwback uniforms worn by the team in their early decades of action. Now, it appears they will be getting their wish fulfilled next year.

During the first quarter of the game against the Raiders, the Seahawks announced the return of the classic throwback threads for the 2023 season.

Seattle wore the classic royal blue jerseys with silver pants and helmets from their inception in 1976 all the way to the 21st century, ending in the 2001 season. Aside from a few minor changes to the sleeves and facemask, this uniform combo remained largely unchanged and was the iconic look for Pacific Northwest football.

Now they are set to make their triumphant return roughly 22 years later. The Seahawks are finally able to do so thanks to a change in the NFL’s helmet policy. In 2021, the NFL ditched their rule of teams only having one set of helmets. Now teams can have two, as long as both sets meet the same safety requirements.

The one helmet requirement limited the Seahawks, as their primary navy helmet would not lend itself to be apart of an authentic throwback uniform. Now, Seattle can officially party like it’s 1976.

Packers to wear throwback uniforms against the Jets in Week 6

The Packers’ 1950s-themed throwback uniforms will return to the field when Matt LaFleur’s team takes on the Jets on Sunday, Oct. 16.

The Green Bay Packers’ 1950s-themed throwback uniforms will return to Lambeau Field when Matt LaFleur’s team takes on the New York Jets on Sunday, Oct. 16.

The Packers debuted the green-and-gold look last year during a 24-10 home win against the Washington Football Team.

The uniforms include an all-gold helmet, grey facemask, green uniform with gold numbers and stripes, green pants and gold stripes, and green socks.

The Packers are planning to wear the uniform once a year at home through the 2025 season.

Kickoff in Week 6 against the Jets is scheduled for noon.

Here’s what the uniforms looked like on the field last year:

The Giants finally gave us a reason to watch the Giants: perfect Lawrence Taylor throwbacks

The Giants brought out LT to showcase the team’s perfect 1980s throwback uniforms.

2022 will not be a good season for the New York Giants.

New head coach Brian Daboll inherited a mess left behind from a series of failed regimes that won 22 games the last five seasons. His quarterback, Daniel Jones, is in the final year of his rookie contract. The lasting image he threatens to leave behind is an uncanny ability to trip over his own feet like a newborn giraffe. Running back Saquon Barkley, drafted ahead of players like Josh Allen, Denzel Ward and Minkah Fitzpatrick in 2018, has been unable to stay healthy, leaving the New York rushing attack stuck in slow motion each of the past two seasons.

That leaves 2022 as a reckoning — a chance for Daboll to parse his roster and figure out who stays and who is merely the means to providing a top five draft pick next spring. There aren’t going to be many football reasons to watch the Giants this fall.

Fortunately for the franchise, the team will at least look good while being trampled on RedZone. That’s because the Giants have brought back one of the NFL’s best throwback uniforms for ’22.

New York’s 1980s throwbacks aren’t just a nod to the team’s glory days; they’re a damn near perfect uniform. From a perfect blue-white-red color scheme to the paired stripes to the underlined “GIANTS” on the helmet, everything works. The team even got Lawrence Taylor for the unveiling hype video.

That means the Giants have started their 2022 season with a rare win. The question now is whether Barkley and Jones can play anything like their predecessors, or if they’ll merely look great in defeat.

Jerry Jones mum on whether Cowboys will wear throwback white helmets in 2022

The owner gave one of his trademark non-answer answers when asked if the Cowboys would join a handful of other teams in alternate helmets. | From @ToddBrock24f7

At some point during the 2022 season, the Cowboys might be riding into battle wearing white hats once again.

Might be.

With the NFL having relaxed its one-helmet rule starting this year, teams will be able to showcase throwback or alternate uniform looks, including headgear. Several clubs have already announced or teased an upcoming wardrobe change; the Cowboys are thought to be considering bringing back the first helmets they ever wore, white shells with an unbordered navy star.

But team owner Jerry Jones could neither confirm nor deny last week when asked about the Cowboys bringing back the 1960 lids.

“I don’t know that I know that we’re not,” Jones confusingly joked. “Charlotte [Jones] will have to inform you there. Can I talk to Charlotte?”

While Jones chose to obfuscate with a Gordian knot of an answer and push the matter off to his daughter and chief brand officer, other NFL squads have already made concrete plans to sport new looks at some point in 2022.

The Patriots wowed fans this week with a Back to the Future-style video via social media revealing that they would be wearing their iconic red uniforms- complete with the “Pat Patriot” logo on white helmets- for at least one game.

The Atlanta Falcons have also declared a return to their roots for their Week 6 game. Red helmets will feature the old “Falcon F” logo and the original center stripe (that even included a thin gold outline, an homage to the city’s Georgia Tech fans, who thought the red-and-black uniforms looked too similar to the Georgia Bulldogs).

Last week, The New Orleans Saints debuted a new black helmet with intricate fleur-de-lis detailing within the center stripe, but it’s not known when they’ll wear them on the field.

The one-helmet rule was lifted last year but only takes effect this season. Teams that want to use a second helmet must supply each player with the exact same make and model as their primary helmet, follow the same sizing and fitting procedures, and allow players to wear the alternate helmets during a practice before wearing them in a game.

Not every team will take advantage of the new rule, at least not right away.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ white helmets with the “Bucco Bruce” logo will make a comeback, but not until the 2023 season, along with the “orange creamsicle” uniforms they wore for their first two decades, according to the team.

The Philadelphia Eagles will also wait until next year to bring back their old-school kelly green uniforms and helmets, as per team owner Jeffrey Lurie.

The website UniWatch reported late in 2021 that, according to a source with one of the major helmet manufacturers, only about half the league’s teams will add a second helmet this season. Teams were required to state their intentions to do so and submit designs for approval by last July 31.

The Cowboys have not revealed if they did so.

White helmets were worn by the Cowboys in 1960, the team’s inaugural year. They remained the official headgear until the 1964 regular season, when silver helmets with an outlined navy star were unveiled for the first time. (Interestingly, they made the switch after playing the preseason in their white helmets.)

The team resurrected white helmets with those throwback “double-star” jerseys each Thanksgiving Day from 2004 until 2012.

Will Cowboys fans see the white helmets again on Thanksgiving 2022? Or perhaps as a Christmas Eve surprise? Or maybe during one of the five scheduled primetime games? Or will they wait until next year?

Apparently, according to Jerry Jones, only Charlotte knows.

Look: Preview of throwback uniforms to be worn by Packers on Sunday

The Packers will debut green and gold throwback uniforms on Sunday against Washington.

The Green Bay Packers provided a behind-the-scenes look at the team’s new throwback uniforms before Sunday’s showdown with the Washington Football Team.

The classic uniforms will debut Sunday at Lambeau Field.

The jersey tops are simple but elegant, with gold numbers and shoulder stripes that really pop on the dark green background. The look is based on uniforms first worn by the team during the 1950s.

To complete the look, the Packers are wearing all gold helmets without logos or stripes and matching green pants with gold stripes.

Are you excited to see the new uniforms in action on Sunday? Let us know in the comments below!

Gators to debut new throwback look against Vanderbilt

Florida will debut a 1970s-inspired helmet as part of its throwback uniform on Saturday.

With much of the excitement surrounding the Florida football season deflated by Saturday night’s loss at Kentucky, UF needed to find a way to reignite some excitement ahead of this week’s game against Vanderbilt. What better way to do that than by debuting a new uniform combination?

Florida announced that the team will be wearing throwback uniforms for Saturday’s homecoming game. The jersey and pants will be the familiar blue and white look that the Gators most recently wore in last year’s win over Missouri.

But helmet-wise, they’re changing things up this time. Instead of the 1960s throwback “block F” helmets that the team has worn with these uniforms in the past, they will be wearing a new orange throwback helmet with the old interlocking “UF” logo that was standard for several years in the 1970s.

The jerseys and pants themselves harken back to the Steve Spurrier playing era of the 1960s.

This is the second time this season Florida has worn non-standard helmets, as it wore the modern white alternate helmets in the season opener against Florida Atlantic. The Gators will look to bounce back against a struggling Commodores team donning the throwback threads.

Door opens for Chargers to wear throwback uniforms in 2022

The Los Angeles Chargers might be set up to don their classic uniforms.

The Chargers have arguably the best uniforms in the NFL, but the threads that the team wore back in the day still ranked near the top.

It just so happens that Los Angeles might be able to bring them back as early as 2022, thanks to a new rule change.

The NFL sent a memo that said the league will allow teams to wear two different helmets starting in 2022. This changes a rule that previously prevented teams from wearing more than one type of helmet.

Now, with the league allowing two helmets per player, it provides more variety in jersey and helmet options.

Therefore, could we possibly see these in two seasons?

NFL ditches 1-helmet policy paving way for Seahawks throwback uniforms

The NFL will be eliminating its one-helmet policy, paving the way for the Seattle Seahawks to introduce new throwback uniforms.

The NFL has announced a small rule change that could very well have a major impact on the Seattle Seahawks. Every offseason, the league constantly tweaks the rules to improve its product, and on Thursday morning, the NFL decided to ditch the one-helmet policy starting in 2022.

How does this impact the Seahawks? Two words . . . Throwback. Uniforms.

Since 2013 the NFL has implemented a one-helmet policy in its constant effort to make the game safer for players. The idea behind the policy was to have one set of helmets for the players with strict safety standards and custom fitting. Removing other sets of helmets that might not have been up to the NFL’s code was the intent.

However, this truly limited uniform options for a lot of clubs. Teams like the Rams, Dolphins and Bills were able to still keep their throwback uniforms because they could simply change the logo decal on their helmets to match an older design. But it eliminated throwback options for teams like the Patriots, Buccaneers and of course, the Seahawks.

This policy was always the hang-up for the Seahawks when it came to throwback uniforms. Now the NFL is allowing alternate helmets as long as teams abide by the same safety guidelines. This rule change paves the way for the team to once again don their original colors of royal blue and silver, with the classic logo design inspired by the coastal Kwakwaka’wakw tribe.

Teams have until July 31 to announce if they plan to wear alternate helmets for 2022, presumably to give the league’s uniform sponsor, Nike, time to develop new threads for the organizations.

Although the Seahawks haven’t announced if they will wear the throwback uniforms next season, it’s hard to imagine they won’t. The 12th Man has long clamored for a return to the uniforms the Seahawks wore from their inception in 1976 through the 2001 season. Why wouldn’t they? It’s an iconic look completely unique to the Pacific Northwest.

It doesn’t take elite detective skills to locate a throwback Steve Largent, Cortez Kennedy, or even Shaun Alexander jersey in Seattle on gameday.

Not for nothing, if the Seahawks don’t decide to wear throwback uniforms they would be passing up a goldmine in new merchandise sales to hungry 12s.
