Report: Texas ‘close’ to making its WR coach hire

Texas’ search for a wide receivers coach could be coming to an end soon.

Texas’ search for a wide receivers coach could be coming to an end soon. The position opened up with Brennan Marion taking the offensive coordinator job at UNLV last week.

Bobby Burton of Inside Texas reports Steve Sarkisian is close to hiring Chris Jackson of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

As a former wide receiver himself, Jackson had a great career at Washington State and in the professional ranks. He brings in west coast ties as an alumnus of Mater Dei High School.

Jackson helped the young Jaguars receiving core make significant strides toward a massive turnaround this season. Jacksonville’s miraculous comeback against the Chargers over the weekend has them in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs after holding the worst record in football last year.

Texas’ wide receiver room is full is talented weapons. The Longhorns return its top three pass catchers in Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington and Casey Cain. Multiple highly decorated incoming freshmen will bring more competition to the unit from the jump.

Texas Football: Potential targets for wide receivers coach

Where does Texas look to replace Brennan Marion?

Texas wide receivers coach Brennan Marion is off to UNLV to take the offensive coordinator job. Marion is the final piece to Barry Odom’s staff in Las Vegas.

In his one season with the Longhorns, Marion made a substantial impact on the program. He played a significant role in helping Texas land another top-five class on the recruiting front. Marion landed an exceptional wide receiver group, including five-star Johntay Cook, four-star Ryan Niblett and four-star DeAndre Moore.

Marion’s departure served as a surprise to Texas players and fans. Many are disappointed to see the up-and-coming coach leave. Steve Sarkisian is now forced to look for his third wide receivers coach in as many years.

The timing of the move does not favor Texas, as the Horns are in need of a transfer wide receiver.

Here is a look at a few potential targets for Texas to replace Marion as wide receivers coach.

WATCH: Texas WR coach Brennan Marion mic’d up during spring practice

Brennan Marion has hit the ground running since his arrival in Austin.

Somewhat lost amongst the many big-time storylines from Texas football this offseason, Steve Sarkisian hired Brennan Marion from Pitt to take over as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

Marion has hit the ground running since his arrival in Austin. His transfer portal additions Isaiah Neyor and Agiye Hall bring excellent talent and experience to a position in desperate need.

Neyor flashed his skillset to Texas fans in the spring game as he hauled in a 62-yard touchdown pass from Quinn Ewers.

The players have taken an early liking to Marion as well. Senior wide receiver Jordan Whittington spoke highly about his relationship with his new position coach.

“He’s like a really close friend, but also, when it’s time to coach, we respect him as a coach, because he has all this new-age stuff that he does to where it’s like we’re always learning something new every day.”

It is easy to see why Marion has been so successful. The energy he brings to practices stands out and he finds ways to get the best out of his players.
