WATCH: Bijan Robinson scores first points of Steve Sarkisian era

Hudson Card connects with Bijan Robinson for the first touchdown of the Steve Sarkisian era.

Texas’ 2021 season is in full swing at home against Louisiana. The Ragin Cajuns opened the scoring with a field goal but the Longhorns have responded in a big way.

After a disappointing first possession, Texas was able to put together a solid drive toward the end of the first quarter. The ground game has been the key early on, with Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, and Hudson Card all gaining yards.

To begin the Sarkisian era, of course, it was Robinson to get the first points. On a third-down inside the red zone, the running back shifted to the left side of the quarterback before running into the flat. No Louisana defender followed him out there, leading to a walk-in touchdown.

You can watch the full highlight below:

Card has thrown his first career touchdown after a shaky start. The offensive line needs to do a better job protecting the redshirt freshman quarterback if the offensive success is going to continue.

Texas is currently leading Louisiana 7-3 early in the second quarter. You can watch Sarkisian’s offense and the rest of the game on Fox.

Pregame buzz as No. 21 Texas prepares to face No. 23 Louisiana in the season opener

Current and former players, staff members, recruits and fans are ALL GAS today.

In what felt like years to get to this point, it’s finally game day for the Texas football program.

The Steve Sarkisian era is officially kicking off at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 4 against Louisiana. If you’re reading this now, you’ve likely already heard about how experienced, talented and well-coached this Ragin’ Cajuns team is.

It’s certainly no easy task for a new coaching staff and inexperienced quarterback under center. Hudson Card will be making his first career start for Texas, although Sarkisian did mention that he will go with his gut in terms of whether Casey Thompson will see the field or not.

Ohio State and UNC each got off to a slow start in their season openers against unranked opponents this week, something that Texas can’t allow to happen against No. 23 Louisiana. Growing pains are expected, especially with Card, but the Longhorns have more depth and overall talent to navigate through the mishaps and heat. Don’t forget that ‘survive and advance’ is all that matters in Week 1.

Many fans, former players and general college football fans are excited and anxious to see whether Sarkisian will live up to his ‘All Gas, No Brakes’ mentality. Under former head coach Tom Herman, the Longhorns struggled to put their foot on the gas and bury an opponent.

Take a look at some of the pregame buzz on social media ahead of the game.

Three offensive keys for Texas against Louisiana

Here are three offensive keys for Texas against Louisiana.

Saturday’s season opener against Louisiana has already provided plenty of storylines before kickoff. One of the biggest may be the debut of Texas’ new head coach, Steve Sarkisian.

After setting records with Alabama over the past two seasons, Sarkisian has been brought to Austin to replicate the success. Step one was naming Hudson Card the starting quarterback after a battle with Casey Thompson. Now, it’s time to show out on the field.

Texas released its depth chart and provided an injury report on Monday afternoon. Outside of wide receivers Jaden Alexis and Troy Omeire, everyone is expected to be available for the Longhorns on the offensive side of the ball.

Sarkisian will have nearly every weapon on his roster, including running back Bijan Robinson, to throw at the Ragin Cajuns on Saturday.

Throwback Thursday: Texas’ 2005 season opener vs Louisiana

Sixteen years ago, Texas’ championship season began the same way it will this season. A home opener against the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns.

Sixteen years ago, Texas’ national championship season began the exact same way it will this season. A home opener against the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. Nearly on the exact date as well, Sept. 3, 2005.

Instead of having a new head coach and quarterback, Mack Brown and Vince Young were hoping to take a Rose Bowl victory over Michigan and turn it into a potential national championship push. Texas dominated from start to finish, 60-3.

As for similarities, a young, underclassman running back was ready to take the country by storm. Back in 2005, it was former four-star and true freshman Jamaal Charles. He finished with 135 yards and a touchdown against Louisiana on 14 carries. Charles led the team in rushing over both Selvin and Vince Young.

Texas’ defense came to play as well. After a Louisiana field goal with 5:32 left in the first quarter, the Longhorns kept them out of the endzone for the rest of the night. Texas DB Aaron Ross was able to secure an interception off quarterback Michael Desormeaux.

You can watch Longhorn Network’s Throwback Thursday ode to Charles’ performance below:

Something tells me Saturday’s Texas-Louisiana matchup will be closer than 2005’s 57 point margin. The No. 23 Ragin Cajuns program has come a long way under Billy Napier and they will enter Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with the mindset of leaving with a victory.

Everything Steve Sarkisian said to the media Thursday

Steve Sarkisian spoke with reporters two days before Texas’ season opener against Louisiana.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke to reporters on a Zoom call Thursday to address his mindset on the season opener. There still seem to be a plethora of burning questions for Sarkisian.

No. 21 Texas will be taking on No. 23 Louisiana on Sept. 4. The Longhorns will be tested right off the bat, as the Ragin’ Cajuns are fresh off a 10-1 season that included a win over Iowa State.

As the new coach, Sarkisian has been tasked with resurrecting a program that was once at the peak of college football glory and has been on a mission to get back for over a decade.

He inherited a very talented team, even with the losses of key players like quarterback Sam Ehlinger, pass rusher Joseph Ossai, and left tackle Samuel Cosmi. Sarkisian has to find their successors and up until recently all of the starters were decided except for the quarterback spot.

In a position battle that Sarkisian said was the toughest he had ever been apart of, redshirt freshman Hudson Card beat out Junior Casey Thompson for the starting job. This has has left many people questioning what Thompson’s role with the team will be in the Week 1 matchup against Louisiana, among many other concerns.

Let’s take a look at everything Sarkisian said on Thursday.

Three reasons Texas beats Louisiana on Saturday

Three reasons Texas gets the win over Louisiana in the season opener on Saturday.

Now more than ever, getting to double-digit wins is incredibly important for Texas. Even with a first-year head coach in Steve Sarkisian, this is a pivotal season for the program.

Before getting to the win total goal, winning the season opener is the first priority.

Louisiana will roll to Austin as the No. 23 team in the country. Coming off one of the best seasons in their history, confidence will not be an issue on the opposing sideline. Beating Big 12 schools is not a daunting task either after Iowa State last season.

Sarkisian will have his team fired up and ready to go as well. Since he took over, there has been a sense of inner confidence from players and coaches. You can tell just from press conferences leading into the season. It’s going to be a fun battle two days from now.

Here are three reasons Texas gets the win over Louisiana on Saturday.

First, the Heisman longshot
