Mike Krzyzewski got emotional when talking about Duke’s ‘grit’ after win over Texas Tech

You could practically feel the pride coming out of the legendary coach.

Over the years, Mike Krzyzewski has seen a lot of basketball. A lot of good, some bad, but mostly good. After almost 42 years of coaching in the same place, you’d think that nothing could bring him to tears anymore. He’s seen everything you could imagine. He’s been there and done that. There’s only so much that can happen with overtly orange basketballs on a small rectangular court.

But then his final-ever team at Duke survives an absolute battle with Texas Tech in the Sweet 16 of the Men’s NCAA tournament. A 78-73 win that felt a lot closer than the margin might indicate. Show tremendous toughness in that sort of victory, and you’ll even move the legendary coach.

CBS’s Tracy Wolfson asked Krzyzewski about the Duke team’s “grit” in beating the Red Raiders. He couldn’t help but gush and choke up.

What a fantastic moment all around.

You’ve managed to do something special when you’re getting Coach K to swallow his words in a victory bask mid-sentence. Not to be overlooked, if you’re likely NBA lottery pick Paolo Banchero, you know you’re an incredible talent if Krzyzewski is glowing about you — unprompted — in the same interview.

Duke is on to the Elite Eight against Arkansas. Something tells me that by the end of this month, we’ll see Krzyzewski, at minimum, fighting back the tears again. That’s what coaching should be all about: Being proud of your players.

Predicting how far each Big 12 team will advance in the NCAA tournament

How far can each Big 12 team go in the NCAA tournament?

The Big 12 is widely regarded as one of the best conferences in college basketball. The top-to-bottom quality of the league provides competitive games week in and week out during conference play.

Six teams from the Big 12 were selected into the NCAA tournament and each squad has sights set on making a run deep into the bracket.

No. 1 seeds Baylor and Kansas are two of the odds on favorites to win the national championship with No. 3 seeded Texas Tech not far behind. Texas comes in as a No. 6 seed looking for its first March Madness win since 2014. No. 9 TCU and No. 11 Iowa State wrap up the Big 12 members who are qualified for this year’s big dance.

Each of these teams has been battle tested by each other during conference play and is ready to show it on the big stage. The Big 12 is looking to go back-to-back after Baylor cut down the nets at the end of the season.

Here is a prediction of each Big 12 team’s ceiling in the NCAA tournament:

Kansas State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcats continue to give it a push.

They’re struggling overall defensively, but they’re bombing away with the most threes in the Big 12 and with the best defense against the three. They always have a puncher’s chance.

This isn’t going to be a shootout – Texas Tech won’t allow it. So if Kansas State can be decent from the outside and get to the free throw line – it’s not bad when it gets its chances – it can keep this close.

Texas Tech isn’t all that strong from the free throw line, it’s not all that great from three and it’s not totally dominant at stopping the three. And …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raider defense is a rock.

No, it doesn’t shut down teams cold from the outside, but it’s always a grind to generate points against the pressure and style.

TCU was able to win 69-66 at home, but it had to hit half of its shots to do it. Oklahoma won at home against the Red Raiders a few weeks ago, but it had to make 49% of its shots to do it.

It’s possible to beat Texas Tech without going off from the field, but that’s not happening lately. It’s going to take a phenomenal shooting day for Kansas State to make this a fight.

Kansas State is the second-worst shooting team in the Big 12 making 42% of its shots.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech doesn’t lose at home.

It’s 5-7 on the road, but the team takes things up to a whole other level at United Supermarkets going 17-0.

These two played in mid-January up in Manhattan, and Texas Tech rolled 62-51 with the defense stopping the Wildcats from the outside. The D will come up with a big performance at home.

Updated Big 12 basketball standings with one week to go

Kansas remains at the top, but Baylor and Texas Tech are in striking distance with one week left in the regular season.

Saturday was one of the wildest days in college basketball history. Seven of the top 10 teams in the land lost including two Big 12 conference teams in No. 5 Kansas and No. 9 Texas Tech. The parody in college basketball has never been higher.

No. 10 Baylor got back into the conference championship race after taking down the Jayhawks 80-70. The Bears are just half a game back with one week to go.

TCU can feel much better about their NCAA tournament resume after a thrilling upset win over Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs erased a double-digit second half deficit, winning 69-66.

No. 20 Texas escaped Morgantown with an 82-81 win over West Virginia. Timmy Allen scored 26 points to lead the Horns to victory No. 21 on the season.

Iowa State also boosted its NCAA tournament resume after coming out on top against Kansas State 74-73.

This edition of Bedlem was won by the Oklahoma Sooners in an overtime affair. A nice win for Porter Moser over their in-state rivals.

Here is an updated look at the Big 12 standings with just one week left in the regular season:

Texas Tech vs TCU Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The defense continues to be devastating.

The Red Raiders have won four straight and seven of the last eight but clamping down on everyone from the field. Oklahoma might have hit 49% from the field in a win, but Texas Tech loaded up in the rematch.

The Sooners made 38% of their shots and lost 66-42.

TCU was able to make 46% of its shots from the field in the first meeting, and it was hot from the outside, and … lost 82-69.

Texas Tech is eighth in the nation at field goal defense and 14th in scoring D. TCU doesn’t score enough – it’s having a hard time getting to 70 points. This has to be a low-scoring fight, and …

Why TCU Will Win

TCU isn’t bad at keeping the scores really, really low at home.

It beat West Virginia 77-67 in Ed and Rae Schollmaier, and it lost to Iowa 54-51 a few weeks ago. Slow things down, play in to Texas Tech’s style and capitalize on the opportunities, and get around it all with lots and lots of assists.

Texas was held to 1-of-14 from three, Baylor was held to 2-of-11 from the outside, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech isn’t good enough from three. It’s going to be all about relying on the defense and forcing enough mistakes to generate easy points.

The Red Raiders hit 54% from the field in the first meeting and was great on the free throw line. That was going, the +5 rebounding margin was great, and it’ll all happen again in Fort Worth.

Oklahoma vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Yeah, Oklahoma is having a few issues on a three game losing streak.

Yeah, Texas Tech is playing well on a three game winning streak.

Both of those runs started right after OU whacked the Red Raiders by 15 in Norman.

The Sooners were fantastic from the field, did a great job on the move, and Texas Tech was totally miserable from three.

They did a great job on the free throw line, too, and they’ll have to do all of that again.

Only Kansas shoots better than OU in the Big 12, the three point defense is the real deal, and only Texas is stronger on the free throw line. If all of those elements can come together again, the Sooners could bust through this mini-slump.

So …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

What’s Oklahoma’s problem lately?

It’s shooting great and it continues to be excellent on the free throw line, but the defense has gone bye-bye.

Oh, it’s still strong at guarding the three, but it allowed the last three teams on the slate to combine to hit close to 60% from the field.

What’s Texas Tech doing that’s so right lately?

It’s making up for the inconsistencies in a few spots by coming up with a ton of steals and transition points. The last three Red Raider opponents combined for 63 fouls and 44 turnovers.

Oklahoma should be good for about 20 would and at least 12 turnovers, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech just can’t hit threes.

It can rebound, and the defense can rise up in key moments, but can it overcome the lack of threes if Oklahoma gets hot again from the outside?

No, but that’s not going to be a problem. Those 13 threes were the most OU made in the game wins a mid-December win over Arkansas. It’ll make its share of three pointers, but not enough to rise up over a great-shooting day from the Red Raiders inside.
