Texas State vs Troy Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

One of the funkiest teams going, Texas State doesn’t do anything consistently well, it doesn’t have a downfield passing attack, and the scoring wildly fluctuates, but it’s got a way of rising up and rocking.

All of a sudden, QB Layne Hatcher – who really is good – turned into Patrick Mahomes and the defense became a brick wall in a stunning 36-24 win over Appalachian State to kick the season into high gear. Now there are real, legitimate expectations to scramble for three more wins and bowl eligibility.

That means the takeaways have to continue. The D has generated 11 in the last five games, the offense needs to capitalize on every opportunity, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Troy Will Win

The Trojans are rolling.

They’ve won three straight since losing to Appalachian State on a magical Hail Mary helped by a great run defense, solid passing game, and just enough of a running game to get by.

The pass rush is dangerous enough to get to Hatcher on a regular basis, the run defense isn’t going to allow more than 100 yards, and the offense should be able to control the clock.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Troy avoid a slew of turnovers to give Texas State the breaks it’ll need?

The Bobcats will keep it close with a good first half, but the Trojan D will settle in, the pass rush will start to take over, and somewhat quietly, the home team will look like it really might be the best team in the Sun Belt – or close to it.

Appalachian State vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Everyone sort of jumped off the Appalachian State ship after the loss to James Madison, but this still might be the best team in the Sun Belt – the showdown with Coastal Carolina is up in a few weeks – with a running game that continues to be amazing and a defense that’s holding up just fine.

There aren’t any turnovers to give Texas State any breaks, the efficient passing game feeds off all the ground game can do, and Texas State will have a hard time keeping up with any of it.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Texas State Will Win

It’s been a rough run against good teams, but the defense is aggressive enough to force takeaways and the secondary is holding up well enough.

The pass defense is among the best in the Sun Belt and does a great job on third downs. Can the offense get its passing attack going?

The offense pivoted a bit and is better at controlling the clock, the running game has to get into a groove from the start, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State won’t be able to stop the Appalachian State ground game.

The Mountaineers aren’t going to take many chances. Chase Brice and the passing attack will keep everything safe and let the great rotation of running backs take care of he rest.

Appalachian State will run for 250 yards and won’t have too many problems after the first half.

James Madison vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

The Bobcats were rocked by Nevada and Baylor, were great against awful FIU and Houston Christian teams – they’re somewhere in the middle of all of that.

The passing game has been solid. It’s able to keep the chains moving, the ground game was good in the two wins, and the secondary has been solid so far even with Baylor and Nevada combining for nine touchdown passes.

As good as James Madison has been, the line is allowing plays in the backfield. Texas State can get behind the line, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why James Madison Will Win

James Madison leads the nation in tackles for loss with close to 11 per game and it’s No. 1 against the run.

It’s not like it’s doing it against a slew of cupcakes. Norfolk State might not have been strong, but Middle Tennessee has been terrific ever since the opening day wipeout loss to the Dukes, and Appalachian State’s ground game is amazing.

JMU has allowed a net total of 79 yards rushing allowing fewer than yards per carry. The defense has been special, the offense is consistent and it’s not screwing up, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

James Madison QB Todd Centeio has been fantastic.

In his sixth season, the former Temple Owl and Colorado State Ram is playing like a seasoned vet with 11 touchdown passes, no interceptions, and one touchdown pass.

The Texas State secondary has been solid so far, but that’s not going to be the problem.

The Bobcat offensive line that gives up too many plays behind the line will be what helps the Dukes pull away.

Texas State vs Houston Christian Game Preview

Why Houston Christian Will Win

The artist formerly known as Houston Baptist can still wing it around.

Houston Christian might not have the attack of the past, but Justin Fomby has thrown for 635 yards and six touchdowns in the first two games for the ninth-best passing attack in the FCS. Now it gets to go against a Texas State defense that was fine against Nevada and FIU, but couldn’t stop Baylor through the air in last week’s 42-7 loss.

The Huskies will put the pressure on the Bobcat secondary throughout, the pass rush is good enough to live in the backfield and screw up an offense that needs time to operate, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Texas State Will Win

What happened against the Lions of Lindenwood?

Fomby threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns and everything seemed to be going fine in the first half, but the Huskies lost 21-20.

The offense stalled in the second half as the Lions held the ball for over 35 minutes.

Texas State used to be fly at 100 miles per hour with a great pace to its style, but now it’s controlling the clock a bit more, it hasn’t been bad defensively on third downs, and it’s been able to find a few things that work with the passing game.

But …

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State has had a weird start to the season with the rushing attack.

Turnovers were a problem in the loss to Nevada – that, and the one net rushing yard didn’t help – but the defense is starting to force takeaways and the line should bring just enough pressure to matter.

Baylor vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

That’s how the offense is supposed to work.

The Bobcats got the passing game going in the loss to Nevada, but the ground attack wasn’t able to do much of anything. In the 41-12 win over FIU, everything clicked, the passing game was good enough, and the team was able to over come a slew of mistakes to get the win.

The defense has been solid against the run so far. Nevada is trying to grind it a bit – it came up with four touchdown runs in the win – but it didn’t break off anything big. So far, Texas State is allowing just three yards per carry, it’s getting a good push into the backfield, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Baylor Will Win

Texas State is screwing up way too much.

The six turnovers and 18 penalties in the first two games are a problem against a Baylor team that’s not giving the ball away.

The Bears have a flag problem of their own, but they should be at least a +2 in turnover margin.

The defense will take over in this. Nevada’s D was able to hold Texas State to a grand total of one net yard rushing. Baylor will get into the backfield, force QB Layne Hatcher to move the offense through the air, and that’s when the pass rush will really kick in.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State gave Baylor a heck of a time in the 2021 opener – a 29-20 Bear win – but it should be a little easier for the Big 12 side this time around.

The offense fought in a tough loss to BYU, but this week the line will come up with a better performance and the defense isn’t going to give up a thing.

Again, mistakes will matter. Texas State will move the ball a bit, but turnovers will be devastating.

FIU vs Texas State Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

Was that the spark the program needed?

It took an overtime to get by Bryant in a 38-37 thriller, but in the first game under new head coach Mike MacIntyre the offense found a passing game with Grayson James hitting four touchdown throws and the two point conversion for the win.

Nevada is almost totally starting over and doesn’t have a passing game, but it was able to roll up 38 points on Texas State in a 24-point win thanks to a defense that lived behind the line and held the ground game to -12 yards.

Bobcat QB Layne Hatcher didn’t have any room to move, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Texas Will Win

Texas State has way too much offense.

It didn’t show it against the Wolf Pack, but the passing game will work fast, it should be able to hit at least the 349 yards that Bryant came up with, and there will be a running game this week.

FIU is improved, but it’s going to be a long, long road back to respectability. Texas State will be far better and far sharper overall than it was last week in Reno.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State will get up fast, and the FIU offense that rallied back with 24 fourth quarter points last week won’t get the same production this time around.

The Bobcats aren’t going to turn it over four times and get hit with ten flags like they did last week.

Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

Nevada vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

Nevada struggled to get the passing game going in its 23-12 win over New Mexico State.

The Aggies put up a decent fight, but this was a far, far cry from last year’s Wolf Pack team that could wing it around the yard with one of the nation’s most dangerous passing games.

Everything was kept short, Shane Illingworth and Nate Cox couldn’t make anything happen down the field, and the team was outgained by 46 yards.

Texas State’s offense will crank up the tempo, the receiving corps is far more dangerous than what New Mexico State showed Nevada in the opener, and 23 points and 257 yards of offense probably won’t get it done this week.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Nevada Will Win

The Wolf Pack got the rough game out of the way.

This is a total rebuild year for the program after transfers and a coaching change led to a turn in how the offense is going to work. No, the passing game didn’t do much, but Toa Taua ran for 109 yards and Devonte Lee pounded out 61 with two scores – the ground attack will start carrying the team.

Texas State has to prove it can generate plays behind the line after failing to do that often enough last year and doing nothing against the run.

If everything works, Nevada should grind it out for well over 30 minutes and control the tempo throughout.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State will get its offense working well enough to keep the pressure on far better than New Mexico State did – and it’s not going to turn the ball over five times. Nevada, though, will come up with a few takeaways, the running game will work just fine, and it’ll be another grinding, ugly win.

Texas State Bobcats Preview 2022

Head coach Jake Spavial is doing the right things in the modern age of college football.

He was ahead of the game in all but blowing off normal recruiting and building things up through the transfer portal. His offense is fun and fast, his defense aggressive, and …

It’s not working yet. However, after five wins in his first two years, the four wins last year really did mark a step forward. In the new and improved Sun Belt it’ll be even more of a fight, but now he’s got experience and depth to go alone with the new parts through the portal.

There’s more talent than before, the schedule is full of winnable games, and there’s a real shot this season to push for the first winning season since 2014 and the program’s first bowl game ever.

Texas State Bobcats Preview 2022: Offense

The offense goes fast, likes to wing it around, and has an Air Raid style that tries to keep defenses on their heels. There’s one big problem – it isn’t working well enough to control games. The passing attack averaged just 194 yards per game, there were too many turnovers, and it was a struggle to move the chains. However, it’s an attack loaded with veterans and should be sharper if …

The quarterback play has to be sharper. With leading passer Brady McBride off to Appalachian State, it starts with the addition of Layne Hatcher from Arkansas State, Dillon Markiewicz is coming in from Syracuse to give it a shot, and former NC State transfer Ty Evans is there.

The receiving corps is full of producers. Javen Banks led the team with 553 yards and five scores, Marcell Barbee led the team with 40 catches and five touchdowns, and most of the other top targets are back along with a slew of receivers from the transfer portal highlighted by Demarcus Gregory from USF.

Can the experienced offensive line keep defenses out of the backfield? OT Dalton Cooper is one of the best in the Sun Belt, and there’s decent size at the other four spots.

The running game averaged 149 yards per game, and it gets back leading rusher Calvin Hill, who ran for 696 yards and averaged over five yards per carry. 6-0, 225-pound Jahmyl Jeter led the team with eight scores and was second with 384 yards.

Texas State Bobcats Preview 2022: Defense

The defense struggled to come up with big plays. It was the worst in the Sun Belt at generating sacks and pressure, it allowed 430 yards and 33 points per game, and it was mostly awful against the run.

The 18 sacks weren’t enough, but most of the production returns. Issiah Nixon led the team with four sacks, but he’s likely going to be a key backup at linebacker.

Second-leading tackler Sione Tupou is back on the outside after making 75 stops, and 6-2, 225-pound London Harris should do more in the middle after making 33 tackles on the outside.

The defensive front has decent bulk. 315-pound Gjemar Daniels will play a bigger role somewhere inside, and 300-pound Samuel Obiang will be more of a factor on the nose. Now the pass rush has to come from the end, and that starts with 280-pound Nico Ezidore being more disruptive.

The Bobcats only came up with three interceptions, and losing star tacklers and playmaker Zion Childress to Kentucky hurts, but Kordell Rodgers broke up seven passes from his corner spot, and veteran DeJordan Mask is a decent tackler.
