Texas Longhorns Basketball: BetMGM odds, how to watch the Iowa State game

In order to retain their four seed in the NCAA Tournament later this month, Texas can’t lose to Iowa State on Tuesday.

Texas’ journey towards an NCAA Tournament bid continues on Tuesday night against Iowa State. The two schools have already played against each other this season, with the Longhorns securing a 78-72 win in January.

Tuesday is the second makeup date the road trip to Ames has seen. Jan. 20 was the original date and Feb. 18 was the second one before COVID-19 postponed the matchup again. It will be Texas’ first of three games in six days.

Iowa State lost 14 consecutive games and is 0-15 in Big 12 play this season. Steve Prohm’s team ranks dead last in the conference in multiple categories, including free throw attempts, total rebounds secured and given up, and points allowed.

In order to retain their spot as a four seed in the tournament later this month, the matchup with Iowa State is a cannot lose game. A Quadrant Four loss would be detrimental to Texas’ resume. With Oklahoma on deck on Thursday, finetuning their shooting will be key as well.

Texas beats Iowa State 78-72, Andrew Jones goes for career high

Texas and took care of business of Tuesday night vs Iowa State, 78-72. For the first time during the Smart era, UT is 3-0 in Big 12 play.

Shaka Smart and Texas and took care of business of Tuesday night against Iowa State, 78-72. For the first time during the Smart era, the Longhorns have begun Big 12 play 3-0 and will be in first place for at least a day.

All five starters were in double figures, with Andrew Jones leading the way with a career-high 23 points. The junior guard shot 50% from the field and 33.3% from behind the arc. He also tied the game-high four assists while adding six rebounds. After a slow start to conference play, seeing Jones play well is a positive step for Texas.

True freshman Greg Brown recorded 15 points and eight rebounds, two rebounds short of his third double-double in four games. Matt Coleman was efficient as usual, making all but one shot inside the three-point line.

A couple of days after Smart called Jericho Sims “the most important player” in the Kansas game, he responded with another solid performance. 10 points and eight rebounds came up huge for the Longhorns trying to close out the Cyclones.

For Iowa State, forward Javon Johnson led the way with 21 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Three other Cyclone players were in double figures. Steve Prohm’s squad remains without a win to begin the Big 12 season, falling to 0-4.

Next up – At No. 14 West Virginia on 1/9

The major news surrounding the Mountaineers is star forward Oscar Tshiebwe entered the transfer portal and will not be playing for the rest of the season. 8.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game will be leaving Bob Huggin’s team.

On the court, West Virginia is coming off a comeback victory on the road against Oklahoma State. Wins against the Cowboys and Iowa State plus losses to Kansas and Oklahoma see them off to a .500 conference start.

Three things we learned from Texas’ loss to Iowa State

Texas suffered a season-ending loss to Iowa State on Black Friday. Here are three things we learned from the disappointing performance.

Texas suffered a season-ending loss to Iowa State on Black Friday. The Longhorns still had a chance to make the Big 12 championship with a win but will now be playing for nothing over their next two matchups against Kansas and Kansas State.

It was once again a poorly coached game from Tom Herman late in the fourth quarter. For the second consecutive year in a row against the Cyclones, Texas had plenty of opportunities to put the game to bed. Poorly called plays and a lack of execution from the defense cost the Longhorns both times.

A disappointing performance all around, this has become the norm in Austin. And that is a huge issue. This may have been the final straw for a head coach who has failed to deliver on his goals and aspirations.

Here are three things we learned from the loss to Iowa State:

Three reasons why the Texas Longhorns lost to Iowa State on Friday

The Texas Longhorns lost a game on Friday afternoon that they just couldn’t afford to. A primary reason being the head coach Tom Herman.

It was quite the scene in Austin, Texas as the Longhorns prepared to take on the Iowa State Cyclones in a game they couldn’t lose. They lost. Continue reading “Three reasons why the Texas Longhorns lost to Iowa State on Friday”

Texas Longhorns vs Iowa State Cyclones: Instant analysis of the 23-20 loss

Somehow, someway, Texas found a way to lose to Iowa State. A game that mirrored last season’s loss, UT falls to 5-3 on the season.

Somehow, someway, Texas found a way to lose to Iowa State. A game that mirrored last season’s loss, the Longhorns fall to 5-3 on the season after the 23-20 loss. With the win, the Cyclones are now one step closer to their first conference championship since 1912.

Cameron Dicker had the opportunity to tie the game as the clock expired but barely missed it to the left. While it will be the moment remembered, it is far from the reason Texas lost.

Once again, fourth-quarter management from Tom Herman was a major factor. With 4:04 left, the offense got the ball back with the opportunity to put the game on since. Instead, deep shots on second and third down only took 20 seconds off the clock.

The Longhorns’ defense was solid all day but broke when the game was on the line. Containing Breece Hall for all four quarters is nearly impossible. He squeaked into the endzone for the game-winning touchdown.

Sam Ehlinger leaves Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium for the final time with a loss. The senior quarterback did not look like a third-year starter all day. Overthrows and poor decisions in the pocket cost Texas in the end.

After 10 first-quarter carries, Bijan Robinson only touched the ball six more times. At the time, Robinson was averaging 4.3 yards per carry and working well on the outside. Putting the game in the hands of a struggling quarterback instead of the hot hand makes little to no sense.

Now, the Longhorns will be looking forward to Kansas State and Kansas with nothing else to play for. The Big 12 championship is out of the question, even if Oklahoma or Iowa State drop another game. Herman will likely end his tenure in Austin without a conference championship.

The season began with expectations, hope, and excitement. Once again it will end with disappointment, frustration, and question marks. Athletic director Chris Del Conte will have to answer them once the season ends on Dec. 12.
