Texas has the depth to overcome its unexpected injuries this week

Texas was built to overcome injuries.

According to a couple of reports, Texas has been bit by the injury bug. A handful of Longhorns could unexpectedly be out for Saturday’s game. Despite the news, the team is built to overcome the losses.

Heading into the season, we discussed the team’s championship depth. Talented players are being developed by the current staff despite our issues with play calling philosophy and decision making. The team can find a way to win.

The downside of frequent substitution is that lesser players take valuable playing time from starters. Fortunately for Texas, the Longhorns’ pattern of giving playing time to backups will mean that those backups are more ready to play in the place of injured starters. Now, its time for those players to step up in the absence of starters.

Make no mistake: Texas will have several key players suit up and play a huge role on Saturday. The unforeseen losses do not leave the cupboard bare. Moreover, several of the backups are capable players, too. The Texas coaching staff will look to feature their strengths against Kansas State on Saturday.

Texas scraped by West Virginia on Saturday and will now enter its third bye week of the season. The week off could not be coming at a better time for the Longhorns, as their final three games are going to be the most important stretch in Tom Herman’s tenure.

Luckily, Texas will be dealing with very few injuries before playing Kansas on Nov. 21. Starting with defensive tackle Keondre Coburn who suffered an injury during the first quarter of the West Virginia game.

Herman says Coburn’s has “pretty mild high ankle sprain” and will be in a walking boot for a couple more days. The redshirt sophomore has recorded 17 tackles this season, 2.0 which were for a loss.

The Longhorns’ wide receiver group could get a big boost as Joshua Moore and Jordan Whittington are expected to play against Kansas. Both could return to practice as soon as Sunday.

Moore is currently in a sling after spraining his shoulder on Saturday. He is the team’s leading receiver in catches, yards, and touchdowns.

As for Whittington, the true freshman has not played since the Red River Shootout. He had ten receptions and 65 yards in the loss to Oklahoma.

Finally, there were reports that punter Ryan Bujcevski had torn his ACL and would be out for the season. Herman confirmed those reports and said Cameron Dicker will take over the punting duties for the rest of the season.

Bujcevski was “literally just running down there to be a safety on the punt coverage team and planted wrong on the turf. Knee buckled on him.”

Guard Isaiah Hookfin out two to three weeks with shoulder injury

According to Rivals, guard Isaiah Hookfin will be out for two to three weeks. The redshirt freshmen suffered a shoulder injury in practice.

According to Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods.com, guard Isaiah Hookfin will be out for two to three weeks. The redshirt freshmen suffered a shoulder injury in practice this week.

If Hookfin does miss the maximum timeline of three weeks, the guard would miss the season opener against UTEP. The Longhorns are scheduled to host the Miners on Sept. 12.

However, Brian Davis of the Austin States-American is reporting Hookfin will be ready to go for the opener.

Hookfin is going into his second year with the program. He sat out all of last year, taking a redshirt year. Now, Hookfin is projected to be the starting right guard against UTEP.

Redshirt sophomore Willie Tyler was supposed to start, however, he opted out of the 2020 season on Aug. 19.

With Derek Kerstetter moving from right tackle to center, the interior offensive line will consist of Junior Angilau, Kerstetter, and Hookfin. All three will be playing their respective positions for the first time in college.

Texas’ offensive line is expected to be a strength this season, even with injuries. Protecting quarterback Sam Ehlinger and giving him time to make plays is what makes the Texas offense work.

Just over two weeks from the UTEP game, the Longhorns will be working to remain healthy. A couple of weeks off the practice field will make sure Hookfin is ready to go on Sept. 12.
