Texas is trending for 2024 Lancaster CB Corian Gipson over the weekend

Texas, not Clemson, might now be in the driver’s seat for Corian Gipson.

Four-star cornerback Corian Gipson is trending to the Longhorns as of Saturday. Inside Texas’ Gerry Hamilton and Eric Nahlin addressed the specifics in their recruiting update.

There’s been plenty of noise about Gipson and Clemson in recent days after visiting the team’s campus June 2. Many were under the impression Gipson was leaning toward the Tigers because of recent developments in his recruitment. Perhaps that isn’t the case.

Inside Texas’ Eric Nahlin appears to be confident in the Longhorns’ chances after predicting a high confidence RPM pick for Texas and the Lancaster defensive back. Nahlin was confident in Arch Manning choosing the Longhorns early when many thought Manning would go elsewhere. His prediction should carry a little more weight with Texas faithful.

The On3 recruiting prediction machine gives Texas a 78% chance to win out with Clemson sitting at 18.9%. The Longhorns will look to close on the elite Dallas-Fort Worth area cornerback in the upcoming months.

Scouting the Longhorns’ newest quarterback commit KJ Lacey

He may be a four-star now, but KJ Lacey’s film has five-star written all over it.

Texas snagged a huge commitment from KJ Lacey on June 3. He is perhaps the best 2025 quarterback recruit you’d never heard of before his commitment. Continue reading “Scouting the Longhorns’ newest quarterback commit KJ Lacey”

Texas Football: Must-have players for the 2024 recruiting class

Dream big. Texas can recruit all these players to Austin.

Texas is reaching the point of the offseason where it needs to make inroads on building its 2024 recruiting class. It’s time. While there’s plenty of time before signing day, we’d like to see more tangible wins from the class.

Outside of simply winning over recruits, Texas needs to excel in a handful of positions. It begins in the trenches where offensive line coach Kyle Flood needs to restock the position for the future. While we’re excited about the 2022 offensive line class that has already heavily featured Kelvin Banks and Cole Hutson, at some point those players will be gone. Texas needs to continue to build depth.

It’s unclear how big a focus the defensive line will be after a couple of huge defensive line recruiting classes. Adding impact players up front certainly wouldn’t hurt the team.

Regardless of where the class goes from here, Texas needs an excellent haul to avoid the falloff that the past coaching staff endured at the end of its tenure. Here’s a look at some of the recruits the Longhorns can ill afford to let slip through the cracks, in no particular order.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban takes a shot at Texas recruiting

Nick Saban didn’t land this punch on Texas recruiting.

Legendary Alabama head coach Nick Saban does not want to be seen as the reason for the disparity in college football.

At the SEC’s spring meetings, Saban deflected the blame for NIL inequality from Alabama to three other programs. He said the following about the money spent to recruit players.

“You think there’s disparity in college football right now? There’ll be a lot more in the future … I think the way Southern Cal, Texas and Texas A&M are spending money … it hasn’t hit yet. What are you willing to spend?

It’s hard to believe Alabama built its 2023 class that hauled in a whopping total of nine five-star players on a tight budget. Even so, accusing Texas, Texas A&M and Southern California of spending money on recruits perhaps isn’t the insult Saban may think it is. It’s kind of ironic that he is so concerned about what’s going on elsewhere.

In reality, the Longhorns are probably in the same ballpark as the Crimson Tide in recruiting expenses. Now programs don’t have to pay recruits under the table anymore, which some schools seemed to have down to an art form.

The current format isn’t hurting Alabama recruiting, and it’s unlikely Saban really cares about the disparity in the sport. It’s unclear as to why he feels threatened by USC, Texas and Texas A&M, but the all-time great head coach was bothered enough to say something. Perhaps that means Texas is doing something right.

2024 Four-star EDGE Danny Okoye sets up Texas official visit

The No. 1 player in Oklahoma sets up his Texas official visit.

Four-star EDGE Danny Okoye is set to take an official visit to Texas in June. The talented Tusla product announced on Twitter we will be in Austin the weekend of June 16-18.

The 247Sports Composite rankings list Okoye as the No. 1 prospect in Oklahoma and a top 150 overall player nationally. He has built a strong offer list with an opportunity to play at close to 30 programs at the next level.

Okoye narrowed down his recruitment to 10 schools earlier this week. Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M all made the cut.

Okoye spoke with On3 Sports about what he is looking for from coaches recruiting him.

“So, I like a coach who knows what he wants from me and can give me a task to execute without me having to go in there and wonder what I have to do to make an impact.”

Texas has a chance to build some early momentum in Okyoe’s recruitment with his summer visit. The Longhorns staff would love to add the high-upside pass rusher to its 2024 signing class.

Looking at the ground Texas football must make up in recruiting

Texas will look to close several key recruits over the next few months.

As we approach the month of June, the Longhorns have three commits in the fold. While we don’t know much about the class we do know there’s plenty of ground to make up for Texas.

For now, the team has just one four-star player committed. He’s a good one. Texas cornerback commit Hunter Moddon checks in as the No. 103 player in the country according to On3 Sports. The team has seen positive trends for other players at the cornerback position with five-star Kobe Black and high four-star Selmon Bridges.

The On3 Prediction Machine appears to favor the Longhorns for several players. However, being in the lead and securing commitments are two different things altogether. What seems clear is that the players Texas is targeting plan to make later decisions. Head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff may have to settle for being in the lead for now.

Ultimately, this coaching staff is recruiting the right kind of players, and those players are intent on seeing a winning product. As a result, it appears Texas is pinning its recruiting success on a successful season on the field in the fall.

Texas DT Sydir Mitchell makes pitch to 2025 four-star WR Quincy Porter

Four-star WR Quincy Porter, Sydir Mitchell’s former teammate, receives offer from Texas.

Texas football’s recruiting footprint has extended to New Jersey. Former Bergen Catholic High School defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell is looking to help the Longhorns land one of his former teammates.

Next up on the recruiting board for head coach Steve Sarkisian and company is four-star wide receiver Quincy Porter. The 2025 New Jersey talent shared that he had received an offer from Texas recently. It’s not the first big time offer for the dynamic player of late.

In recent weeks, Porter secured offers from Alabama, Florida State, Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Michigan among others. The 6-foot-3, 190 pound receiver has the game film to match his frame.

Porter would seem to be a huge potential get for Texas in the 2025 recruiting class. He ranks as the No. 6 athlete and No. 75 overall player in the 2025 On3 consensus.

Given Sarkisian’s recent openness to big-bodied receiver additions, there could be a place for the New Jersey receiver in the program’s future plans.

Which football teams have a legitimate chance to win the Big 12?

We share a list of every legitimate Big 12 title contender for 2023.

Who can win the Big 12 in 2023? That’s what we want to determine as we approach the final months of the college football offseason.

The upcoming season has plenty of unknowns, especially in regard to the Big 12 Conference. For starters, we’re unsure how the four newcomers will adjust to their new league.

UCF and BYU stand out to me as teams who could be ready to win now, while Houston and Cincinnati have plenty of uncertainty. Much of the confidence in the first two teams revolves around having seen their starting quarterbacks have success at the college level.

Last season, John Rhys Plumlee led a prolific Central Florida offense. And while it’s been awhile since we’ve seen good quarterback play from Kedon Slovis, he had a strong freshman campaign not long ago at USC.

TCU and Kansas State made surprise appearances to the Big 12 championship game last year. We’ll try to account for how they got there and pinpoint the teams who could legitimately win the conference. Here’s a look at the most likely title winners.
