Scouting the Longhorns’ newest quarterback commit KJ Lacey

He may be a four-star now, but KJ Lacey’s film has five-star written all over it.

Texas snagged a huge commitment from KJ Lacey on June 3. He is perhaps the best 2025 quarterback recruit you’d never heard of before his commitment.

Wild statements have circulated regarding the talented player. Some suggested his play is reminiscent of former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. I decided to watch some film of the player to see if the hype was real. It did not disappoint.

Lacey was the high school equivalent of what Texas wants Quinn Ewers to be this season. His accuracy is a near certainty from a variety of platforms and he keeps plays alive with his feet.

His throwing motion isn’t effortless as his small body requires more power generation from his trunk. Even still he puts the ball where it needs to be consistently.

The highlight reel below shows him hitting receiver after receiver in stride in ways that you thought only a video game could create. Toward the latter end of the reel, Lacey is seen turning his body away from his target while on the run and throwing a dime to his downfield receiver. This player is special.

I won’t predict where he will rank among Ewers, Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning, but he could be as impactful to the program on the field as any of the aforementioned players. If Texas can hold on to the unique talent’s commitment, the Longhorns could be set at quarterback for a long while.
