Dallas Cowboys select Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown in third round of NFL draft

DeMarvion Overshown is staying in Texas with the Dallas Cowboys!

The Dallas Cowboys selected Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown with their third-round pick on Friday night. Overshown came off the board as the No. 90 pick in the draft.

The move is a surprising one given how little publicity the Longhorns linebacker received throughout draft season. Nevertheless, the Arp, Texas, native adds tremendous speed and athleticism to a defense that could use help at the position.

The former five-star high school recruit enjoyed an illustrious college career, capped by 96 tackles in his final season on the Forty Acres. He received first-team All Big 12 honors and finished as a Butkus Award semifinalist for the nation’s top linebacker.

Texas’ defensive star is a versatile piece to add to the Dallas defense. Overshown figures to bolster the Cowboys’ pass rush with elite edge rusher Micah Parsons and veteran end DeMarcus Lawrence. He could become a long-term option for the team at linebacker.

Texas teammates discuss RB Bijan Robinson’s NFL draft result

Teammates are fired up for Bijan Robinson.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson is still making an impact on the Forty Acres. That much is evident after watching current Longhorns player discuss his draft designation.

Jordan Whittington seemed the most thrilled for Robinson on the night. He said the following after watching his teammate get picked early in the draft.

“(We were) just super excited. Just seeing your brother who you had blood, sweat and tears with, playing the game with, just seeing his dreams come true. You know, that’s always a good feeling. It just felt like we got drafted.”

The above sentiment speaks to the camaraderie the team shares under head coach Steve Sarkisian after overcoming a rough 2021 campaign. Current Texas running backs were excited to see the big time player hear his name called on the night.

Freshman running back Cedric Baxter voiced excitement for his mentor. Similarly, the likely starting running back for the 2023 squad Jonathon Brooks weighed in on Robinson’s big night.

“Just to know all the work that he’s put in, it’s well deserved,” Brooks shared. “I’ve learned so much from him being behind him for two years … he’s well deserving of what he got.”

Texas players should get to celebrate a handful of more former teammates drafted over the weekend.

Texas WR Jordan Whittington writes letter to Texas fans via The Players Tribune

Jordan Whittington doubted he could make it in football. What used to scare him now drives him.

Texas wide receiver Jordan Whittington returned to Austin for another season, but not for reasons you might expect. Whittington found security in his home away from home on the Forty Acres.

The Cuero product discussed his internal struggle in a letter to Texas fans via The Players Tribune.

“Tonight’s the NFL draft, but my name won’t be getting called,” Whittington shared. “I decided to return to Texas for one more year. At first … I just said the normal athlete things. We have unfinished business. I’m coming back to win the Big 12. I want to help lead our team.”

Whittington continued, “The truth is more complicated. It has to do with something you won’t hear that many athletes talk about: fear.”

Whittington doubted his ability to make a career in football. He felt a duty to provide for his family through a career in the NFL. Without it, he felt lost. Now, he’s using the uncertainty as fuel to be his best.

“I made the decision to come back for one last season at Texas, so I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure it’s special,” Whittington wrote.

The goals are still present. The Longhorns wide receiver still wants to make it in the NFL and help his team to its first Big 12 title since 2009, but it’s bigger than that. It’s about embracing the process of being his very best.

247Sports’ Brandon Marcello shares his post-spring Top 30 college football teams

Check out where Texas lands in his post-spring rankings.

Texas is seeing plenty of respect from college football writers after an impressive spring game. Unlike past Orange and White game scrimmages, the offense looked consistently sharp with its top two quarterbacks in the passing game.

247Sports national college football writer Brandon Marcello took notice of the strong spring by ranking Texas No. 13 in his Top 30 rankings. After taking a deep dive and gathering information on teams across the country, Marcello has the Longhorns just behind No. 11 Clemson and No. 12 Notre Dame. That gives a general idea of how the Longhorns are tiered nationally heading into 2023.

Four Big 12 teams cracked Marcello’s Top 30. Texas led the way followed by No. 17 TCU, No. 20 Kansas State and No. 27 Texas Tech.

Here’s a complete look at the Top 30 rankings.

Texas RB Bijan Robinson ranks No. 2 on Todd McShay’s draft board

Todd McShay ranks Bijan Robinson the No. 2 player in the 2023 draft class. Here’s a look at his top 10 players.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson is viewed as an elite prospect heading into Thursday’s NFL draft. According to ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay he is the No. 2 player in the draft regardless of position.

McShay shared his ranking of the top 350 players in the draft on social media ahead of the first round on Thursday. The ranking saw Robinson sandwiched between Alabama quarterback Bryce Young and edge rusher Will Anderson.

Now NFL general managers are posed with a dilemma: Draft the second-best player in the class or avoid drafting him because of the position he plays.

Presently, Robinson stands as one of the best skill players in the draft. His ability to catch and win matchups as a receiver silences much of the positional value concerns.

Texas football to face blue bloods in five straight seasons

Texas faces road battles with Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State in consecutive seasons.

The Texas Longhorns updated their future nonconference football schedules on Tuesday. They’ll face a gauntlet of blue bloods for five straight seasons.

As part of exit negotiations with Fox, there was talk that Texas conceded its 2024 home game with Michigan to allow Fox to host rights to the game for its Big Noon Kickoff. It appears the Longhorns will face Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State each on the road in consecutive seasons.

Admittedly, trips to Ann Arbor and Columbus to face Michigan and Ohio State are unlikely wins. In its last few major out-of-conference battles, the Longhorns split with Notre Dame and USC, lost thrillers to LSU and Alabama and got clobbered by Arkansas. That’s good for a 2-5 record in premier non-conference bouts in recent seasons.

Even so, Texas brass don’t seem afraid of big time competition. The games should provide high quality intrigue and increase the strength of the brand.
