Giants sign Terrell Burgess to practice squad following release from Rams

The Rams released Terrell Burgess earlier this week and he’s now signed to the Giants’ practice squad.

The Los Angeles Rams elected to part ways with Terrell Burgess earlier this week, allowing him to join a new team for the rest of the season. With teams looking for depth in the second half of the regular season, the New York Giants have signed Burgess to their practice squad.

The Rams selected Burgess in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Utah. When Los Angeles took Burgess in the draft, there were high hopes for him due to his ability to play safety and cornerback on the defensive side of the ball.

However, Burgess rarely saw the field in his two-and-a-half years with the Rams. The Utah product totaled 29 tackles and one pass breakup in 30 appearances (three starts) for the Rams.

Given all the defensive backs that Los Angeles has added to the team in recent years, Burgess just never got an opportunity to earn an expanded role. After joining New York’s practice squad, maybe a change of scenery will allow Burgess to reach his potential in the NFL.

Lions should have interest in ex-Rams S Terrell Burgess

Lions should have interest in ex-Rams S Terrell Burgess, drafted under now-Lions GM Brad Holmes

There were a couple of safeties waived in the NFL on Tuesday who carry some level of intrigue with Detroit Lions fans. One of them is a hard “no”, but the other is someone GM Brad Holmes and the Lions should strongly consider claiming off waivers.

The hard no comes for former Raiders first-rounder Johnathan Abram. Las Vegas dumped the No. 25 overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft, who has consistently been one of the lowest-ranked defenders per Pro Football Focus his entire career. PFF grades can be somewhat debatable, but Abram’s atrocious coverage grades certainly pass the eye test. His missed tackle rate of 15.3 for his career is higher than that of Lions LB Alex Anzalone, not someone noted for his tackling prowess.

Terrell Burgess is a different story. Burgess was dumped by the Rams in the middle of his third season. He was a third-round pick in 2020 out of Utah. Holmes was the man running the Rams scouting department back in that draft cycle, his last before joining the Lions right after the 2020 campaign ended.

Burgess has not done much in the NFL. Injuries have been an issue, most notably a broken ankle that ended his rookie season after seven games. He started one game, the Rams’ Week 5 loss to the Cowboys, and recorded nine tackles in the game. The Rams have a solid starting safety duo in Taylor Rapp and Nick Scott, blocking any real room for advancement or playing time.

With a contract that runs through 2023, Burgess would cost the Lions just under $1.1 million for next season and under $500,000 for the rest of 2022. While he’s not shown the third-round potential yet, the 23-year-old would be an inexpensive trial at a position where the Lions can use upgraded young depth. At minimum, Burgess is a better option than Brady Breeze to step up in case Ifeatu Melifonwu winds up on I.R. or is incapable of playing.

Rams waive 2020 3rd-rounder Terrell Burgess, TE Kendall Blanton

The Rams surprisingly waived 2020 third-round pick, Terrell Burgess, as well as TE Kendall Blanton

Terrell Burgess was seen as a great pick by the Rams in the 2020 NFL draft when he was selected in the third round. However, in the last two and a half years, he’s done very little on defense.

The Rams clearly didn’t value him much and have now moved on. The team announced on Tuesday that Burgess and tight end Kendall Blanton have been waived from the 53-man roster. Burgess has been active for 30 career games but he’s played just 221 total snaps on defense since 2020, including just 82 this season.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Rams shopped Burgess at the trade deadline but couldn’t trade him.

In two-plus seasons in the NFL, Burgess has 29 tackles and one pass defensed.

Blanton was cut by the Rams this summer but eventually made his way back to the team when they signed him off the Chiefs’ practice squad. He helped fill in for Tyler Higbee during the playoff run last season and played four games this season, catching two passes.

Terrell Burgess helped distribute school supplies at LA elementary school

Terrell Burgess took some time this week to help give away backpacks and school supplies to students at Ritter Elementary School in LA.

Terrell Burgess spends the majority of his time during the week practicing with the Los Angeles Rams, preparing for the team’s upcoming opponent. However, this week, the former third-round pick took some time outside of practice to help give away backpacks and school supplies to students at Ritter Elementary School in Los Angeles.

Burgess partnered with UNIFY and Walmart to make the giveaway possible for the kids involved. The students were able to pick up a backpack and meet the third-year safety during the event.

Burgess, who is a California native, was seen giving high-fives and was all smiles while handing out school supplies to the students that showed up. It isn’t every day that you have an opportunity as a kid to meet a Super Bowl champion from the NFL.

On gamedays, Burgess is locked in and he’s focused on one goal, which is helping the Rams win. But whenever he isn’t strapping on a helmet and shoulder pads, he’s taking time out of his day to make sure he’s doing whatever he can to help the Los Angeles community.

5 Rams to watch in preseason Week 2 vs. Texans

The Rams will host the Texans in Week 2 of the preseason and here are 5 players that fans should be monitoring on Friday.

The Los Angeles Rams got started on the right foot in their preseason opener versus the Los Angeles Chargers, defeating the team they share a stadium with by a score of 29-22. It was an exciting contest for an exhibition game as the Rams had multiple players stand out with strong performances.

After taking on the Chargers, the Rams will host the Houston Texans in Week 2 of the preseason this Friday. Even though Sean McVay won’t deploy many starters in the preseason, there are still plenty of notable players to keep an eye on.

Ahead of Friday’s preseason bout with the Texans, let’s take a look at five members of the Rams that fans should be watching closely.

Terrell Burgess showing ‘really encouraging things’ at Rams OTAs

Sean McVay has been encouraged by what he’s seen from Terrell Burgess in OTAs, as well as other DBs

The Rams’ secondary is led by Jalen Ramsey and Jordan Fuller, but at the other three starting positions, there are some questions. Troy Hill should be a starter after the Rams acquired him from the Browns, but he’ll have to earn that spot, too.

The nickel role and second safety job are up for grabs, and while it’s still early in the offseason, Sean McVay is encouraged by what he’s seen – most notably with Terrell Burgess, who has played sparingly in his first two seasons.

“I don’t think it can be minimized what a good job David Long did last year, as well,” McVay said on Wednesday. “I thought he played really well throughout the playoffs. Handful of important, significant snaps. Seeing Nick Scott pick up where left off. You know Jordan Fuller’s gonna be ready to go. Taylor Rapp’s been great. And I’m seeing really encouraging things from Terrell Burgess. So there’s a lot of competitive opportunities to see take place and unfold at training camp, but that’s a positive thing and some of these young guys are exciting, as well.”

Burgess was surprisingly passed over at seemingly every turn last year. He played 16 games and suited up for all four playoff contests, but he played just 90 defensive snaps in the regular season and 65 in the postseason when the secondary was decimated by injuries.

The coaching staff even turned to Eric Weddle, who was two years into retirement, before giving Burgess significant playing time, which was a bad sign for the young safety. It’s good to hear that he’s impressing McVay in OTAs, and he’ll need to keep that up into training camp if he wants to finally break through as a key contributor.

Watch: Rams reveal 2022 schedule with another funny heist video

The Rams went back to the well with another heist video to reveal their 2022 schedule

When the Los Angeles Rams released their heist video about stealing the draft, they immediately became the talk of Twitter. It was a video that looked like a legitimate movie trailer, starring the likes of Dennis Quaid and Aaron Donald.

Well, to revel their 2022 schedule, the Rams went back to the well with another heist video. Terrell Burgess was the star of this clip, attempting to steal the schedule from the league’s headquarters in New York.

His brief comments on the schedule after getting a quick look are pretty funny, and after successfully pulling off the heist, he delivers the schedule to Coach Sean McVay.

Check out the video below.

Rob Havenstein, two other Rams cleared to return from COVID-19 reserve

The Rams are getting three players back from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, including Rob Havenstein.

Slowly but surely, the Rams are beginning to get players back from the reserve/COVID-19 list. After activating Jalen Ramsey, Von Miller and Odell Beckham Jr. (among others) off the list before Tuesday’s game, the Rams will have three more players return Wednesday.

Sean McVay told reporters that Terrell Burgess and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo were both cleared to return from COVID-19 reserve and will be activated. Rob Havenstein will also be activated after his 10-day stay on the reserve list expired.

Burgess is a role player who doesn’t play many snaps, but getting Havenstein and Okoronkwo back is helpful – particularly in Havenstein’s case with the Rams down to their third-string tackle Tuesday night.

Burgess seems happy about being cleared after being forced to watch last night’s game from home.

Among the key players still on COVID-19 reserve are Tyler Higbee, Jordan Fuller and Joe Noteboom. There’s still time for all of them to return in time for Sunday’s game against the Vikings, but they haven’t been activated yet.

4 Rams players who deserve a bigger role in 2nd half of season

We are at the midway point in the season and these four players on the Rams deserve a bigger role in the remaining eight games.

We have reached the halfway point in the season as Week 10 is prepared to kick off in what is an 18-week season for the first time in NFL history. The Los Angeles Rams are positioned near the top of the NFC with a 7-2 record, good enough for second place in the NFC West behind the Arizona Cardinals.

At this point of the season, we have a decent grasp of who is going to play pivotal roles for the Rams. Matthew Stafford is going to be the lead man on offense, with Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Darrell Henderson dominating touches.

On the defensive side of the ball, Los Angeles will rely on Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Leonard Floyd, Von Miller (when he makes his debut), and Darious Williams, among others. There are also guys like Ernest Jones and Greg Gaines that have been thrust into heightened roles due to injuries or roster decisions.

Even though Los Angeles won’t want to alter too much of what it has going on, there are still some changes that could be in the works. With eight more games on the schedule, here are four players on the Rams that deserve to see a bigger role in the back half of the season.

7 most intriguing potential trade candidates for the Lions to consider

The 7 most intriguing potential trade candidates for the Detroit Lions to consider before the Nov. 2nd deadline

The NFL’s trade deadline on Tuesday, Nov. 2nd is rapidly approaching. And while most trade rumors and ideas wind up on the cutting room floor for a variety of reasons, it’s always fun to project who might be heading where.

The Detroit Lions are not anticipated to be big-time buyers or sellers. At 0-7, they’re not a team looking to add a quick-fix veteran on an expiring contract or willing to give up significant draft capital to acquire a player another team no longer wants. There is a small chance Detroit could trade away a veteran or two (DL Nick Williams makes the most sense), but it’s unlikely to bring much in return.

Each of the 32 Wire editors was tasked with listing the player most likely to be traded before the deadline. After poring over the listed players, here are the seven that make the most sense for the Lions and GM Brad Holmes to try and pursue if the price is right. The focus is on younger players who can help the team beyond 2021 and not veterans in the final year of a contract who wouldn’t be part of the long-term future in Detroit.
