Texans to release CB Terrance Mitchell

The Houston Texans intend to release cornerback Terrance Mitchell.

The Houston Texans are moving on from cornerback Terrance Mitchell for a second time.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans have informed Mitchell that he will be released.

Mitchell played 14 games for Houston last season, starting in 13 of them. The 5-11, 191-pound defensive back produced 60 combined tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, 10 pass breakups, and three forced fumbles.

The former Dallas Cowboys 2014 seventh-round pick from Oregon was pleased with the chemistry that the Texans secondary had developed by the end of the year.

“Just as the year went on, we’ve built a nice bond,” Mitchell told reporters on Jan. 7, two days before the season finale against the Tennessee Titans. “Truthfully, we’ve seen that anybody we put in those positions, we all are capable of doing the job. We’re just a next-man-up mentality and we’re just all trying to get better and just (get) momentum going into next year.”

Mitchell’s first stint with the Texans was during the 2016 training camp when he was cut at the end of preseason.

Texans place 3 more players on COVID-19 reserve

The Houston Texans placed three more players on COVID-19 reserve for Week 15.

The Houston Texans have placed three players on COVID-19 reserve.

Houston will have challenges in the secondary Sunday as they have placed safety Terrence Brooks and cornerback Terrance Mitchell on COVID-19 reserve.

Brooks was already on the injury report with a hamstring injury that kept him out of Wednesday’s practice. Similarly Mitchell did not practice Wednesday with an ankle/knee issue.

Defensive back Cre’von LeBlanc was placed on the COVID-19 practice squad list.

Houston faces the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15 to close out their season series. The Texans beat the Jaguars in Week 1 37-21 at NRG Stadium. Jacksonville is working through their own issues as they fired Urban Meyer early Thursday morning.

The Houston Texans released their Thursday injury report for Week 13 against the Indianapolis Colts, and two more were added with an illness.

The Houston Texans announced their Thursday injury report ahead of their Week 13 showdown with the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

CB Terrance Mitchell says Texans must treat Patriots’ Mac Jones ‘like any other quarterback’

Houston Texans cornerback Terrance Mitchell says the defense has to treat New England Patriots rookie Mac Jones like they would any other quarterback.

The Houston Texans faced a Pro Bowler and playoff winner in Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

For Week 5 at NRG Stadium, the Texans will take on a newcomer in rookie Mac Jones as the New England Patriots visit Houston for the third consecutive season.

Although Jones is a first-rounder from Alabama, he is still fresh meat to opposing defenses. However, cornerback Terrance Mitchell is not taking the 23-year-old lightly.

“Everybody in the NFL is capable, some guys more than others,” Mitchell said. “I won’t overlook No. 10 because he might be pretty good. We just got to go in there and play honest and treat him like any other quarterback.”

Jones had maybe his best game of the first four games in Week 4 when New England hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jones went 31-of-40 for 275 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception as he led the Patriots on a game-winning drive. Only kicker Nick Folk hitting the left upright killed the drive. Otherwise, a 56-yard field goal with 55 seconds left in the game may have sealed the deal — or, Tom Brady would have spoiled Jones’ first chance at a fourth quarter comeback and game-winning drive.

In order to counter Jones, Mitchell knows the defense will have to work together with the pass rush delivering hits and the secondary playing opportunistically.

Said Mitchell: “We just got to be sticky just like any other week. Rushing coverage and work together. We just have to go out there and execute and do our job.”

The Texans’ only win of the season game against the Jacksonville Jaguars when they pummeled No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence 37-21 at NRG Stadium.

On Thursday, Houston made tight end Brevin Jordan, defensive end Jordan Jenkins, and linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill (knee) were declared out.

The Texans also signed kicker Joey Slye from the practice squad to the active roster. Houston also declared quarterback Jeff Driskel and receiver Chris Moore as their standard elevations from the practice squad.

For Carolina, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (ankle) was declared out on Wednesday. Receiver Shi Smith, cornerback A.J. Bouye, linebacker Clay Johnston, defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, guard Michael Jordan, and guard Deonte Brown were also declared inactive.

Texans vs. Panthers Week 3 injury report: CB Terrance Mitchell out

The Houston Texans released their final injury report for Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers and CB Terrance Mitchell was declared out.

The Houston Texans released their final injury report Wednesday ahead of their Week 3 showdown with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football at NRG Stadium.

The Texans declared cornerback Terrance Mitchell (concussion), receiver Danny Amendola (thigh), and quarterback Deshaun Watson (not injury related) out. None of the trio were listed as participants in practice all week, had there been any full practices for Week 3.

Linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill (knee) and safety Justin Reid (knee) were listed as questionable. For Wednesday’s estimation of practice, both were listed as non-participants. On Monday, they were listed as limited, but downgraded to non-participants on Tuesday.

For the Panthers, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (ankle) was declared out. Tackle Cam Ervin (knee), defensive end Morgan Fox (ankle), cornerback Jaycee Horn (back), and fullback Giovanni Ricci (knee) were not given any designation, and were listed as full participants.

The Texans feature several former Browns players in key spots

The Texans feature several former Browns players in key roles coming back to Cleveland in Week 2

There will be a lot of familiar names and faces on the opposing sideline when the Houston Texans visit FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday in the Cleveland Browns home opener in 2021.

Five former Browns start for Houston, including three in the defensive back seven. Linebacker Christian Kirksey mans the middle for the Texans’ Tampa-2 defense under coordinator Lovie Smith. Kirksey was a Browns team captain and starter for several seasons.

Cornerback Terrance Mitchell and safety Eric Murray also start and project to play every snap, as they did in Houston’s Week 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tavierre Thomas has reprised his role as a special teams ace in Houston. The reserve cornerback did not play on defense.

On offense, tight end Pharaoh Brown is one of the top targets for quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Brown played for the Browns in 2019, while Taylor had a brief but memorable stint as the starting QB in Cleveland in 2018 before giving way to rookie Baker Mayfield.

There were two more former Browns who played significant roles on the Texans too, but DT Vincent Taylor and LB Tae Davis are now on injured reserve. Taylor started for the Texans in Week 1, while Davis was a fixture at weakside LB during the preseason before going on I.R.

Where did they go? Keeping up with ex-Browns around the league

Keeping track of what happened with some former Cleveland Browns players this offseason as they moved around the NFL

Now that the 53-man rosters are set around the league, it’s time to keep up with where some former Browns players from the 2020 season or the 2021 preseason wound up.

Colby Gossett: Another player claimed off waivers after the Browns cut the offensive lineman earlier this week, Gossett is now in Atlanta. There are some projections where Gossett could get immediate playing time for the Falcons, who have some injury issues on the OL.

KhaDarel Hodge: The popular wideout and special teams star was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Lions. Former Browns GM John Dorsey, who brought Hodge to Cleveland, is part of the Lions front office now too.

Karl Joseph: A starting safety in Cleveland last year, Joseph was cut by the Las Vegas Raiders. He is now on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, and there is ample speculation he will be elevated quickly to the Steelers’ active roster once he clears COVID-19 protocols.

Terrance Mitchell: “Money” Mitchell is one of the starting cornerbacks for the Houston Texans. Mitchell signed in Houston as a free agent after three seasons in Cleveland.

Larry Ogunjobi: Ogunjobi defected from the Browns to the rival Bengals. The defensive tackle signed a one-year early in free agency. Ogunjobi is one of the Bengals top defensive starters.

Sheldrick Redwine: The young safety signed with the New York Jets right after being waived by the Browns. The Jets seem pretty excited to have Redwine in their secondary, too.

Sheldon Richardson: The versatile defensive lineman returns to Minnesota, where he played before coming to Cleveland in 2019. Richardson will start for the revamped Vikings defense.

Kyle Lauletta: Cleveland’s No. 3 QB dating back to last season was among the final cuts. He quickly signed in Jacksonville on the Jaguars’ practice squad.

Kendall Lamm: Lamm is playing the same role for the Tennessee Titans that he did in two years in Cleveland. He’s the top reserve offensive tackle. The Titans currently have COVID-19 issues that would have Lamm starting if the season began today.

Tavierre Thomas: The CB is in Houston, doing what he does best – making things happen on special teams. He is also Mitchell’s backup at outside CB on the Texans depth chart.

B.J. Goodson: Cleveland’s leading tackler in 2020, Goodson is still a free agent. The veteran linebacker remains unsigned.

Tae Davis: The LB and special teams fixture from 2019-2020 landed on injured reserve with the Houston Texans. He just recently had foot surgery.

Andrew Sendejo: Sendejo started 14 games for Cleveland in 2020 at safety. The veteran, who turns 34 this week, remains unsigned.

Olivier Vernon: Another veteran starter from last season, Vernon is also still unsigned.

Robert Jackson: Jackson was one of the earlier cuts for the Browns this summer. The cornerback, who primarily played special teams in Cleveland, is now on the Raiders’ practice squad.

Vincent Taylor: Taylor is climbing up the NFL ladder. A reserve defensive tackle in Cleveland, he’s now the starting “rush” tackle for the Texans.

Dontrell Hilliard: Yet another former Browns player who wound up in Houston, Hilliard was waived by the Texans and took an injury settlement. The running back is now a free agent.

WATCH: Texans WR Isaiah Coulter works against CB Terrance Mitchell

Houston Texans receiver Isaiah Coulter got some good work in against veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell in passing drills at training camp.

Isaiah Coulter didn’t really have a rookie year.

Not really — the former Rhode Island Ram may have gone in Round 5 of the 2020 NFL draft, and he may have played one game for the Houston Texans, but COVID-19 nixed his smooth transition from the Colonial Athletic Association to the NFL.

With full participation in the Texans’ offseason program in 2021, the 6-3, 190-pound wideout has been able to build up more of his confidence and display some of his catch radius.

Going against veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell in the seventh training camp practice on the eighth day at Houston Methodist Training Center, Coulter was able to break away from the jam and catch a touchdown pass near the pylon from rookie quarterback Davis Mills.

Coulter is in a competitive receivers room with Brandin Cooks, Chris Moore, Chris Conley, rookie Nico Collins, and Keke Coutee. Coulter will need to make plays like this in preseason games to keep the coaching staff’s attention.

Texans’ free agency spending signals a team tanking in 2021

The Houston Texans may not be actively tanking in 2021, but their talent acquisition in the 2021 NFL free agency may suggest otherwise.

The Houston Texans signed a flurry of free agents and made three trades as new general manager Nick Caserio retooled the roster.

According to Anthony Treash of Pro Football Focus, the moves just scream that of a rebuilding team that is bracing for tanking in 2021.

Whether or not it’s Houston’s intention, this free agency period is that of a “tanking” team commencing a rebuild. For that reason, I have no qualms with any deal dished out to these non-impactful free agent signings as it gets them in prime position to secure the No. 1 pick in 2022.

But if the Texans are genuinely trying to win, the worst decision stands out as bringing back Vernon Hargreaves III. It was only for one year, but he is currently penciled in as the starter opposite Bradley Roby. That sets them up for disaster, as Hargreaves earned the sixth-lowest-graded coverage grade among outside corners in 2020 (37.3).

As far as cornerback goes, Hargreaves did start for 16 games in 2020. However, the Texans have other options acquired in free agency in Desmond King and Terrance Mitchell. King started five of nine games played for the Tennessee Titans, who would go on to win the AFC South. Mitchell started all 16 games for the Cleveland Browns and recorded 13 pass breakups along with three forced fumbles.

What the Texans did in free agency was go out and address holes along the roster with veterans that offer depth as their best asset. Instead of getting by with Phillip Gaines in the middle of the season, the Texans were able to cull from the available free agent pool and get someone who may know a thing or two about the new scheme defensive coordinator Lovie Smith is going to use in the Tampa-2. Houston’s roster construction is that of a team looking to get through the season and maybe win some games along the way.
