The No. 5 seed Tennessee Volunteers (18-8) are an 8.5-point favorite in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament against the No. 12 seed Oregon State Beavers (17-12) on Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The contest tips off at 4:30 PM ET on TNT. Here are insights into this Midwest Region 5-12 matchup to help you fill out your bracket.

In their last game, the Volunteers were defeated by Alabama by a final score of 73-68 and failed to cover the 4-point spread as underdogs. The teams went over the 140.5 point total set by sportsbooks. Keon Johnson racked up a team-high 20 points in the loss on Saturday.

Maurice Calloo led the way for the Beavers with a team-high 15 points last time out as they picked up a 70-68 win over Colorado and covered the 8.5-point spread as underdogs. The teams combined to go over the 131.5 point total set for the matchup.

Prediction

Tennessee 72, Oregon State 65

Money line

The Tennessee Volunteers are favored to win this matchup according to both the model and BetMGM’s money line.

Against the spread (ATS)

The model and MGM both have the Volunteers taking home the victory, but the model has them winning by slightly less (7.2 points). Lean towards taking the Beavers.

Over/Under (O/U)

The MGM point total for this matchup is just 3.5 points lower than the model projection.

Tennessee at Auburn odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Tennessee Volunteers at Auburn Tigers odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Tennessee Volunteers (16-6 overall, 9-6 SEC) visit the Auburn Tigers (11-13, 5-10) in a Saturday matinee (noon ET) at Auburn Arena. Below, we analyze the Tennessee-Auburn odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

Tennessee at Auburn: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Tennessee -350 (bet $350 to win $100) | Auburn +260 (bet $100 to win $260)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Tennessee -7.5 (-110) | Auburn +7.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 145.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Tennessee at Auburn: Three things to know

  1. The Volunteers dropped out of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll after suffering a shaky 70-55 loss to Kentucky last Saturday. Tennessee rebounded with a midweek win at Vanderbilt, but the Vols have been an inconsistent on-again-off-again proposition since starting the season 10-1.
  2. The Tigers have had a rough February. AU is 1-6 over its last seven games. The Tigers have been outshot, 47% to 41%, over that stretch and have committed 15.6 turnovers per game. Auburn heads into Saturday’s game having lost three in a row on its home floor.
  3. AU has a possible injury absence to overcome. Freshman G Sharife Cooper missed the Tigers’ Tuesday game against Florida — a 74-57 loss — and is listed as doubtful (ankle) for Saturday. Cooper scored 26 points in his last game (Feb. 20 at LSU) and is Auburn’s leading scorer this winter. The Powder Springs, Ga., native is averaging 20.2 points and 8.1 assists per game.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Volunteers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games following a straight-up win. In this series, the Underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. The Vols figure to be able to leverage turnovers into a two-possession lead in this one. The Cooper injury for AU is significant, but the Tigers’ shooting numbers at home and their ability to get to the free-throw line give some credence to a fade-the-public angle.

TAKE THE TIGERS +7.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under is: 3-1 in the Vols’ last four games …  5-0 in UT’s last five road games vs. a team with a winning home record … 6-1 in the Vols’ last seven road games overall.

And that’s the lean here: BACK THE UNDER 145.5 (-110).

Tennessee at Vanderbilt odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Tennessee Volunteers at Vanderbilt Commodores odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Tennessee Volunteers (15-6 overall, 8-6 SEC) travel to meet the Vanderbilt Commodores (6-12, 2-10) Wednesday at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville. Tip-off for this conference showdown is set for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Tennessee-Vanderbilt college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Tennessee at Vanderbilt: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:15 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Tennessee -375 (bet $375 to win $100) | Vanderbilt +290 (bet $100 to win $290)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Tennessee -7.5 (-115) | Vanderbilt +7.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 141.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Tennessee at Vanderbilt: Three things to know

  1. The Volunteers are coming off a 70-55 loss at home against Kentucky last time out as 7.5-point favorites as the Under (137) connected. They’re a very ordinary 5-5 SU/3-7 ATS across the past 10 games since their 81-61 win Jan. 16 in the first meeting against Vandy.
  2. The Commodores put up quite a fight against the first-place Alabama Crimson Tide last time out, falling 82-78 in Tuscaloosa as 14-point underdogs. The ‘Dores are 2-5 SU across their past seven, but they’re 5-0-2 ATS during the stretch.
  3. The Vols have covered just three of the past 10, but they’re 14-6 ATS in the past 20 following a double-digit loss at home, and they’re 6-1 ATS in their past seven on the road against teams with a losing home record. And the Commodores are 1-5 ATS in the past six at home against teams with a winning road mark.

Tennessee at Vanderbilt: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Tennessee 74, Vanderbilt 70

Money line (ML)

Tennessee (-375) will cost you three and three-quarters times your potential return, and that’s a risky bet these days. The Vols are playing .500 ball since mid-January, and they failed to win outright last time out against Kentucky with a similar line. AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

VANDERBILT +7.5 (-105) has had their issues this season, and they haven’t done a lot of outright winning. But they are hot against the number lately, while the Vols have really struggled, covering just three times in 10 outings since Jan. 16. Yes, they did cover an 18-point number in Knoxville in the first meeting, but the Vols have really struggled since.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 141.5 (-110) has been the rule for the Commodores lately, going 6-1 in their past seven at home, and 11-3 in the previous 14 games overall. The Over is also 6-1 in the previous seven for Vandy against teams with a winning percentage over .600.

The Over is 4-1 in Tennessee’s past five following a straight-up loss, and 4-0 in the past four on the road against teams with a losing home record.

Kentucky at Tennessee odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Kentucky Wildcats at Tennessee Volunteers odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Kentucky Wildcats (7-13 overall, 6-7 SEC) visit the Tennessee Volunteers (15-5, 8-5) in a Saturday afternoon (1 p.m. ET) contest at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. Below, we analyze the Kentucky-Tennessee college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Tennessee is No. 20 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Kentucky at Tennessee: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Kentucky +240 (bet $100 to win $240) | Tennessee -300 (bet $300 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Kentucky +6.5 (-105) | Tennessee -6.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 134.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Kentucky at Tennessee: Three things to know

  1. The Wildcats won at Vanderbilt Wednesday and have won back-to-back games for the first time since early January. A ball-hawking UK defense forced 14 turnovers against the Commodores and has forced 30 over its last two games.
  2. The Volunteers defeated the Wildcats, 82-71, Feb. 6. Tennessee held Kentucky to a 38.5% mark from the field. The Vols rank as top-3 in the SEC in effective field-goal defense and in turnovers forced. They’ve allowed just 62.3 points per game, which ranks 16th in the nation.
  3. Tennessee heads into Saturday’s home game off a 93-73 win over South Carolina (Wednesday). The Vols’ 93 points marked their most in a game since Dec. 21. UT has tallied 80-plus points in three of its last four contests.

Kentucky at Tennessee: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Tennessee 72, Kentucky 66

Money line (ML)

TENNESSEE -300 IS A SOLID VALUE. The Volunteers are the better five across the board, holding an advantage in every facet of the game. UT would be a decent play up to -325 or so.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

With the above noted, UT is on a slight downward trend line, and UK has been headed the other way of late. The Wildcats have had better handles on the basketball of late, and they’ve made the most of the extra looks with better shooting.

Kentucky has habit of staying close in games; Tennessee has exhibited a pattern of not putting teams away. If the tag here reaches 7-1/2, consider middling this one: taking Tennessee on the ML and Kentucky (+6.5, -105) ATS.

Over/Under (O/U)

This category calls for a PASS but a lean on the Over. Both teams have played to some wild O/U margins in recent weeks. The total here just may not fully reflect some UK improvements on the offensive side of the ball.

Tennessee is No. 20 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Against the spread/ATS: South Carolina +11.5 (-110) | Tennessee -11.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 143.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

South Carolina at Tennessee: Three things to know

  1. The Volunteers come into this game off a Saturday loss at LSU. Tennessee scored just 65 points in that game. A UT five ranked 10th in the SEC in scoring (72.8 points per game) has scored fewer than 66 points in each of its five losses this winter.
  2. The Gamecocks third-leading scorer — G Jermaine Couisnard — was ruled for Wednesday after suffering a foot injury in USC’s Saturday game against Ole Miss, an 81-74 loss at home. Couisnard is averaging 9.7 points and a team-high 3.6 assists per game.
  3. Since upsetting then-No. 23 Florida Feb. 3, South Carolina has shot just 38.9% in losing three straight games. During the skid, the Gamecocks have committed 17 turnovers per contest while allowing an average of 79.0 PPG points.

South Carolina at Tennessee: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Tennessee 77, South Carolina 64

Money line (ML)

The Vols haven’t been great against the fast-tempo teams in their conference, and the Gamecocks have tempo figures right up there with the fastest in the SEC,

USC is not Alabama, Arkansas, or Georgia. The Gamecocks don’t shoot well enough to go on many sustained runs.

The lean here is on Tennessee, even up to -750 but PASS on this listed price.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Tennessee is 4-1 ATS in its last five games against sub-.500 teams.

The Vols figure to pile up points from the foul line and from beyond the 3-point arc. Still, 11.5 points is a lot. Peg TENNESSEE -11.5 (-110) as a small-margin lean.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both sides tote in some Over trends but this number reflects those tendencies and calls out for a zag. TAKE THE UNDER 143.5 (-105).

  • Against the spread/ATS: Georgia +12.5 (-110) | Tennessee -12.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 140.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Georgia at Tennessee: Three things to know

  1. The Bulldogs are coming off a 73-70 win over visiting Vanderbilt Saturday. The victory — logged in part by the strength of a 58.7% shooting performance — marked UGA’s third in a row. The Bulldogs are 5-2 since dropping four straight from Dec. 30-Jan. 13.
  2. The Volunteers are coming off a hard-fought 82-71 win over Kentucky Saturday. Tennessee rallied from being down 10 with 12 minutes to play in that contest. Freshman G Keon Johnson scored a season-high 27 points to lead the Vols.
  3. Tennessee is playing in Knoxville for the first time since Jan. 30. Over their last seven games on home hardwood, UT is just 5-2 straight up and 2-5 against the spread.

Georgia at Tennessee: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Tennessee 74, Georgia 63

Money line (ML)

Georgia has played a weak schedule, so it’s hard to find applicable comps for the type of challenge presented by a top-15 squad like the Vols.

The gulf between these ML figures is too wide. Georgia is the lean in closest proximity, but no value can be found south of +715.

PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The 2-5 ATS Tennessee trend at home and the two-touchdown spread make Georgia the lean in this one.

UT’s shooting numbers have gotten iffy over the last month. Georgia’s quick-tempo, turnover-transition game cuts into a weakness for UT; the Vols logged ATS losses to comparable Alabama, Arkansas, and Florida in that department.

TAKE THE BULLDOGS +12.5 (-110) on just a moderate lean.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS on a well-made number between the rabbit-pace Bulldogs and turtle-tempo Vols.

The Tennessee Volunteers (12-4 overall, 5-4 SEC) visit the Kentucky Wildcats (5-11, 4-5) for a Saturday night (8 p.m. ET) SEC contest at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. Below, we analyze the Tennessee-Kentucky college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Tennessee is No. 10 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Tennessee at Kentucky: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 11:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Tennessee -175 (bet $175 to win $100) | Kentucky +145 (bet $100 to win $145)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Tennessee -3.5 (-110) | Kentucky +3.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 125.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Tennessee at Kentucky: Three things to know

  1. The Volunteers head into this game off a disappointing 52-50 loss at Mississippi State Tuesday. Tennessee shot just 35.6% from the floor and has had similar shooting woes in recent games. The Vols shot just 29.3% in a Jan. 19 loss to Florida and 37% in an against-the-spread loss to Ole Miss Jan. 26.
  2. Kentucky has lost five of six games since Jan. 12. The Wildcats have connected on just 28.7% of their 3-point attempts and have been a consistent minus in turnovers over that stretch. UK was a minus-5 in the turnover exchange in a Wednesday loss to Missouri; the Wildcats have been on the minus side of the miscue ledger in every game since Jan. 12.
  3.  Both teams are solidly in the bottom-15 in tempo/possession analytics. And both teams rank in the top-20 in defensive efficiency numbers. Tennessee has held foes under 62 points in five of its last seven games; UK has held opponents under 40% from the field in five straight.

Prediction

Tennessee 61, Kentucky 58

Money line (ML)

PASS. True odds look to be well-bracketed here.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

KENTUCKY +3.5 (-110) IS A LEAN, but its a slight lean at best. UT is talented but all too capable of iffy shooting performances. Of course, iffy shooting is the neighborhood where UK lives.

Kentucky’s Jan. 26 loss to Alabama is instructive in this play. The Wildcats lost, 70-59 — in Tuscaloosa, Ala., — but the nuts and bolts of the contest were UK-favorable. The game was a one-possession event until the final minutes, and the Wildcats logged a poor 2-point shooting game.

Over/Under (O/U)

UK defends inside and blocks shots at elite levels. Both teams rigorously defend every look to the hilt. The total here is practically a toy number at first glance. But 115-120 is certainly a possibility, and a 130-plus would really take an uncharacteristic shooting performance.

TAKE THE UNDER 125.5 (-105).

Kansas at Tennessee odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Kansas Jayhawks at Tennessee Volunteers sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Kansas Jayhawks (11-5 overall, 5-4 Big 12) tangle with the Tennessee Volunteers (11-3, 5-3, SEC) Saturday evening at 6 p.m. ET at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. Below, we analyze the Kansas-Tennessee college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Tennessee is No. 17 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. Kansas is ranked 18th.

Kansas at Tennessee: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at noon ET.

  • Money line: Kansas +140 (bet $100 to win $140) | Tennessee -165 (bet $165 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Kansas +3.5 (-110) | Tennessee -3.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 130.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Kansas at Tennessee: Three things to know

  1. The Jayhawks are coming off a hard-fought 59-51 win over TCU Thursday. In a win that prevented a fourth straight loss, Kansas mostly trailed for 32 minutes before taking over in the final eight. The Jayhawks held the Horned Frogs to a 35.2% accuracy mark from the field after allowing a 48.1% figure in their three straight setbacks.
  2. The Volunteers are also coming off a close win which served as a bounce back. Tennessee downed Mississippi State 56-53 Tuesday. The win by the Vols snapped a two-game losing skid.
  3. Kansas allowed 75.7 points per game over its last three on the road, and that 75-point mark has been significant for the Jayhawks. Kansas is 0-5 when it allows 75 or more points in a game and 11-0 when it holds opponents to fewer than 75 points.

Kansas at Tennessee: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Tennessee 66, Kansas 62

Money line (ML)

Both teams figure to be in a bit of a desperation mode in this one. Tennessee’s recent struggles seem to be less systemic (shooting misfires in a couple of games). BACK THE VOLS; the -165 price is a solid value.

Against the spread (ATS)

The edge of a one-possession game looks to be the lean, but there isn’t enough of a cushion to leverage a lean on Tennessee. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

The makeup of both teams calls for a tempo in the bottom-third range. Peg a 125 total as enough of a possibility that decent value can be found in the UNDER 130.5 (-110) play.

Mississippi State at Tennessee odds, picks and prediction

Below, we analyze the Mississippi State-Tennessee college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Tennessee is No. 17 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Money line: Mississippi State +400 (bet $100 to win $400) | Tennessee -550 (bet $550 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Mississippi State +9.5 (-110) | Tennessee -9.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 127.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Mississippi State at Tennessee: Three things to know

  1. UT dropped to No. 17 in this week’s Coaches Poll after twin losses a week ago. In losses to Florida and Missouri, Tennessee shot just 35.8% from the floor while being out-rebounded, 68-58. The Volunteers also struggled mightily at the free-throw line, going just 25-for-46 (54.3%).
  2. The Bulldogs scored 78.7 points per game in going 8-2 straight up from Nov. 30-Jan. 9. MSU has been held to just 61.5 PPG while going 1-3 since. Three-point shooting has been a big culprit in the slide: MSU shot a robust 39.5% from distance in the 8-2 stretch; the Bulldogs are at 28.0% from distance over their last four games.
  3. A ball-hawking Tennessee defense has forced turnovers on 24.6% of opponent possessions. That’s the 17th-best rate among NCAA-I teams. Mississippi State has a forced-turnover percentage of just 18.2% (254th NCAA-I).

Mississippi State at Tennessee: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Tennessee 66, Mississippi State 59

Money line (ML)

Consider middling this game, taking Tennessee on the ML and Mississippi State with the points, if you can get a Vols -500 tag. If not, PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

MSU was leading or within 6 points of Alabama in a hard-fought road game Saturday against the No. 8 Crimson Tide before losing 81-73. That was with Alabama logging a 57.4% effective field-goal mark.

Tennessee has a couple of young guards dinged up: Santiago Vescovi and Jaden Springer are listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game. How much will those two play? And will the Vols be caught looking forward to a high-profile Saturday game with Kansas?

The Bulldogs are just 1-3 ATS in their last three visits to Knoxville, but a 9.5-point spread would be the largest in this series since 2014. Figure on MSU doing enough on the glass to stay within 5-7 points for big chunks of the game. Getting 10 or more points would be preferable, but BULLDOGS +9.5 (-110) has enough bite.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams are in the bottom-75 nationally in pace of play (possessions per contest). The total here doesn’t reflect enough of that or the elite level of UT’s defense. TAKE THE UNDER 127.5 (-105).
