5 DTs the Colts should target in free agency

Taking a look at some DT targets for Indy in free agency.

Free agency for the interior of the defensive line for the Indianapolis Colts all comes down to what Chris Ballard does with Grover Stewart.

They are set with DeForest Buckner at the three-tech spot for at least one more season but if Stewart isn’t re-signed, there is a glaring hole in that part of the roster.

Even if Stewart is brought back for the 2024 season, Ballard also has to consider depth beyond him because of how far the rush defense fell when Stewart was out of the lineup in the 2023 season because of his six-game suspension.

Here are five defensive tackles that the Colts should target as replacement options for Stewart if he walks and/or quality depth option to have in the rotation behind him:

Titans signing LB Garret Wallow off Texans’ practice squad

The Titans are poaching LB Garret Wallow off the Texans’ practice squad.

Just days after a former Tennessee Titan landed with the Houston Texans via waivers, the Titans are now adding a player from the practice squad of their division rival.

According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, the Titans are signing linebacker Garret Wallow off the Texans’ practice squad. Wallow will be added to Tennessee’s 53-man roster.

This move comes on the heels of the Texans being awarded former Tennessee defensive lineman Teair Tart off waivers on Monday, just one day after Houston beat the Titans in Nashville, 19-16, in overtime.

The 25-year-old former fifth-round pick will provide much-needed depth at linebacker for the final three games of the season behind Jack Gibbens and Azeez Al-Shaair, while also lending a helping hand on special teams.

The TCU product has 36 tackles (three for loss), one sack and one pass defensed over 32 games (five starts) and 304 defensive snaps during his career.

He’s appeared in just two contests for Houston this season, playing only on special teams.

Bengals attempted to claim former Titans DL Teair Tart on waiver wire

The Bengals attempted to make a claim on the waiver wire.

The Cincinnati Bengals have made some quality additions over the waiver wire in recent years and attempted to make that happen again this week.

Unfortunately for the Bengals, the Houston Texans got in the way.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Bengals were one of a handful of teams to put in a claim on defensive tackle Teair Tart after he was waived by the Tennessee Titans, but the Texans had top priority in the waiver wire order.

Tart, 26, spent the last four seasons with the Titans and would have been a timely addition to the Cincinnati roster after losing star DJ Reader for the season to injury.

Given some of the reported drama between Tart and the Titans this year, the fact the Bengals were willing to take the risk likely says a lot about their desire to add to the position in the middle of this attempted playoff run.

Texans awarded former Titans DL Teair Tart off waivers

Former Titans DL Teair Tart is going to a division rival.

One day after the Houston Texans upset the Tennessee Titans in an overtime win, they are now bringing in their division rivals’ former defensive lineman.

According to the league’s transactions wire, the Texans have been awarded former Titans defensive lineman Teair Tart off waivers after he was waived on Saturday.

The move to waive Tart in-season was a surprising one.

Granted, there was at least an inkling that things had soured between Tart and the Titans, but it getting to the point where he had to be let go before the season ended was borderline shocking.

Considering his ability as a run defender and age, the fact that Tart made it as far as he did on waivers is also surprising. Perhaps his issues with the Titans made teams think twice about bringing him in.

Tart will get at least a three-game audition with the Texans before hitting free agency in 2024, but it could end up being longer if Houston can make the playoffs, something they’re in good position to do.

Assuming all goes well with Tart and his new team, this will add a little more juice to the Titans-Texans Week 17 game at NRG Stadium in what will be a crucial contest for Houston’s playoff hopes.

Titans officially waive DL Teair Tart among 4 moves

The Titans made four roster moves on Saturday, which included the team waiving defensive lineman Teair Tart.

The Tennessee Titans made four roster moves ahead of their Week 15 game against the Houston Texans, including officially waiving defensive lineman Teair Tart.

Along with waiving Tart, the Titans have promoted wide receiver Mason Kinsey to the active roster and elevated defensive lineman Marlon Davidson and linebacker JoJo Domann from the practice squad for Sunday’s contest.

The expectation is that Kinsey will take over punt return duties from corner Eric Garror, who muffed a punt during the Week 14 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Domann and Davidson were both elevated last week, also. The former played 16 snaps on special teams, while the latter saw 19 defensive snaps. Davidson will give Tennessee some extra depth with Tart gone.

Speaking of Tart: he’ll now head to waivers, where he figures to draw plenty of interest.

The Titans will look to win back-to-back games for the first time this season when they host the Texans at Nissan Stadium on Sunday.

Social media reacts to Titans’ plan to waive Teair Tart

How social media reacted to the news that the Titans are waiving Teair Tart.

The Tennessee Titans are on the cusp of making a surprising move, with the team set to part ways with defensive lineman Teair Tart.

The Titans haven’t officially made the move just yet, but the decision was first reported by Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky and has since been confirmed by Tart himself via a post on social media.

Per the report, the Titans were unhappy with Tart’s attitude, effort and overall conditioning, while the Florida International product was unhappy with not getting a contract extension instead of the $4.3 million tender Tennessee placed on him during the offseason.

This situation had been bubbling for a while, with Tart posting some cryptic tweets during the year that seemed to express his displeasure with the situation.

Kuharsky is also reporting that Tart had lost the respect of his teammates and the Titans tried to trade him at the deadline, but to no avail.

Here’s how Titans social media reacted when the news first broke.

Teair Tart confirms Titans are waiving him

Soon-to-be former Titans DL Teair Tart took to X on Friday evening to confirm he will be waived.

After news broke on Friday afternoon that the Tennessee Titans were set to waive defensive lineman Teair Tart, the player himself has confirmed the incoming move.

Tart took to Twitter later in the day to thank the Titans for “releasing” him. The Florida International product will actually go to waivers, where he’ll certainly draw interest.

If he clear, which is highly unlikely, then Tart is free to sign with any team.

“Appreciate the Titans respecting my request for the release,” Tart tweeted. “Looking forward for my next [home]…”

Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky originally reported the news of the impending move, which he says could be made official on Saturday.

The Titans have yet to confirm the parting of ways.

Tart is handling the situation better than his former teammate, Jaleel Johnson and Monty Rice, both of whom did not go quietly. Johnson has since been brought back, though.

While Tart’s departure in-season is a surprise, his strife with the Titans is not. The 2020 UDFA has posted multiple cryptic tweets in the past to hint at his displeasure over not getting a contract extension and having to play on the $4.3 million tender he eventually signed.

Meanwhile, the Titans weren’t happy with Tart’s conditioning, effort and attitude, per Kuharsky’s report.

It’s an unfortunate end with a player who is no doubt talented, but a bad attitude can hurt a locker room, something head coach Mike Vrabel clearly wanted to avoid.

Report: Titans set to part ways with DL Teair Tart

The Titans are reportedly set to part ways with defensive lineman Teair Tart.

In what is a surprise move, the Tennessee Titans are reportedly set to part ways with starting defensive lineman Teair Tart.

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, the relationship between Tart and the Titans has hit a breaking point, with Tart upset about his contract situation and the team believing he isn’t giving full effort.

Here are some of the details from Kuharsky’s report:

The Titans are parting ways with Teair Tart after season-long issues reached a breaking point. The defensive lineman’s been upset over his contract situation and the team is unsatisfied with his effort and attitude.

At his best during his four seasons, Tart was a key run-stuffer for the team. But his relationship with the Titans has tumbled this season as the feeling has been he could have gotten more playing time and been more effective if he’d gotten better conditioned.

Tart had been listed on the injury report with a “personal” issue the last two weeks. When asked about him on Friday before this report came out, head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters “not read too much into” Tart’s situation.

The surprise here comes from the fact that the Titans are letting Tart go now.

However, if you’ve been paying attention to Tart’s social media, you’d know he’s posted multiple cryptic tweets during the year that seemed to express displeasure with the $4.3 million tender the Titans placed on him.

While Tart has no doubt been an impact run defender, he hasn’t done much as a pass-rusher and concerns about his conditioning have been no secret, with defensive line coach Terrell Williams even mentioning Tart needed to improve in both areas this offseason in order to play more snaps.

The Florida International product continued to play the run well in 2023, but he hasn’t improved as a pass-rusher and he’s playing the exact same percentage of snaps he did the two years prior.

With Tart gone, the Titans are now down three defensive linemen. Jeffery Simmons is set to miss another game at least and Kyle Peko is out for the season.

Tennessee poached a pair of defensive linemen off practice squads a few days back in Quinton Bohanna and Keondre Coburn. The Titans also have Denico Autry, Jaleel Johnson and rookie TK McLendon on the active roster and Marlon Davidson and Ross Blacklock on the practice squad.
