Titans officially waive DL Teair Tart among 4 moves

The Titans made four roster moves on Saturday, which included the team waiving defensive lineman Teair Tart.

The Tennessee Titans made four roster moves ahead of their Week 15 game against the Houston Texans, including officially waiving defensive lineman Teair Tart.

Along with waiving Tart, the Titans have promoted wide receiver Mason Kinsey to the active roster and elevated defensive lineman Marlon Davidson and linebacker JoJo Domann from the practice squad for Sunday’s contest.

The expectation is that Kinsey will take over punt return duties from corner Eric Garror, who muffed a punt during the Week 14 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Domann and Davidson were both elevated last week, also. The former played 16 snaps on special teams, while the latter saw 19 defensive snaps. Davidson will give Tennessee some extra depth with Tart gone.

Speaking of Tart: he’ll now head to waivers, where he figures to draw plenty of interest.

The Titans will look to win back-to-back games for the first time this season when they host the Texans at Nissan Stadium on Sunday.

Titans having open competition at punt returner, Kyle Philips still in the mix

The Titans are having an open competition for punt returner, but Kyle Philips remains one of the options.

The Tennessee Titans (2-4) return to action in Week 8 at home against the Atlanta Falcons after having a week to reflect on their previous loss to the Baltimore Ravens in London.

However, the Titans may feature a different look in the punt return game after Kyle Philips’ muffed punt at the end of the first half resulted in points for the Ravens.

The blunder has given special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman a reason for trying his luck with other personnel. The philosophy seems to be aligned with the franchise’s transitional state, following the trade of long-time safety Kevin Byard.

It would appear the Titans are evaluating everything, as Aukerman indicated the competition for the punt return job is there for the taking. At least for this weekend, Tennessee will evaluate Mason Kinsey, Eric Garror, Shi Smith, and Colton Dowell, and despite his latest punt return blunder in Week 6, Philips is also in the mix.

Philips, the second-year man out of UCLA, started the year on injured reserve. He made his season debut in Week 5 and has taken four punt returns for a total of 23 yards.

Garror is in his first season with the Titans after signing as an undrafted free agent and averaged 15.1 yards per return as a senior at Louisiana. He has yet to have an opportunity to field punt returns in the NFL.

Smith has prior experience with the Carolina Panthers, taking 23 punt returns and averaging 6.2 yards per in 2022. The former South Carolina standout notably averaged 21.9 yards per return as a junior for the Gamecocks.

Kinsey has had the most success returning punts at the NFL level. The 25-year-old has fielded four punt returns this season, averaging 12.5 yards per, including a 21-yard return in Week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Dowell has yet to return a punt in the NFL, but at 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, the seventh-round pick in 2023 presents a unique combination of size and speed. The Titans are willing to explore roles they can carve out for the former UT-Martin wide receiver.

Titans promote TE Kevin Rader to active roster

The Titans made a pair of moves on Monday, one of which included the promotion of TE Kevin Rader.

The Tennessee Titans made a pair of roster moves on Wednesday, one of which included the promotion of a player from the practice squad to the active roster.

That player is tight end Kevin Rader, who played his first snaps of the season in Week 4 after being elevated. Rader saw nine snaps on offense and 13 on defense.

Rader gives the Titans more help on special teams and an extra blocker at tight end. Tennessee now has four players on the roster at the position in Rader, Chig Okonkwo, Josh Whyle and Trevon Wesco.

In addition to promoting Rader, the Titans also re-signed wide receiver Mason Kinsey to the practice squad, which was reported earlier in the day by Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

Kinsey was waived on Monday, along with offensive lineman Xavier Newman. The Berry college product appeared in two games and served as the team’s punt returner, averaging 12.5 yards per.

Report: Titans re-signing Mason Kinsey to practice squad

The Titans are reportedly re-signing WR Mason Kinsey to the practice squad.

After the Tennessee Titans waived him on Monday, wide receiver Mason Kinsey reportedly won’t be going anywhere.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the Titans are re-signing the Berry College product to the practice squad in what is just his latest stint there.

Tennessee promoted Kinsey after Week 2 in the wake of fellow wideout and returner Kearis Jackson landing on injured reserve. The 25-year-old didn’t catch any passes in two games but averaged 12.5 yards per punt return, including a long of 21 in Week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Kinsey was waived earlier this week in tandem with offensive lineman Xavier Newman as the Titans are set to welcome back both wide receiver Kyle Philips and right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere.

Philips figures to take over the returner role Kinsey was holding down but it remains to be seen if NPF will go back to his old role as the starting right tackle.

Titans designate Kyle Philips to return from IR among 3 moves

On Monday, Titans WR Kyle Philips took a big step toward returning from injured reserve.

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kyle Philips took a significant step toward making his return from injured reserve on Monday.

The team announced it has designated Philips to return from injured reserve, which gives him a chance to return as soon as Week 5. However, he still has to be activated and won’t count against the 53-man roster until that happens.

In addition to that move, the Titans waived wide receiver Mason Kinsey — which could be a sign that Philips is indeed ready to return to game action this week — and interior offensive lineman Xavier Newman. Right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere will take one of those two roster spots.

Kinsey was handling punt return duties after the injury to fellow wideout and returner Kearis Jackson, who was replacing Philips in that role. Kinsey was fairly effective, averaging 12.5 yards per return.

Newman actually started at left guard in Week 2 in place of an injured Peter Skoronski but lasted just one quarter before being replaced by Dillon Radunz, who has held down the job since.

Titans promote Mason Kinsey, put Kearis Jackson on IR among 4 moves

Titans WR Mason Kinsey has been promoted to the active roster among 4 moves made Friday.

The Tennessee Titans made a total of four roster moves on the Friday before their Week 3 game against the Cleveland Browns.

After suffering an ankle injury at practice during the week, wide receiver Kearis Jackson has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced. Jackson will miss at least the next four games.

Taking his spot on the roster is fellow wide receiver Mason Kinsey, who was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. Chances are Kinsey will handle punt and/or kick return duties while Jackson is out.

Now, a look at the rest of the moves the Titans made on Friday.

Mason Kinsey adds playing QB to list of ways he helps Titans

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel recently discussed the different hats WR Mason Kinsey wears at practice after he took some snaps at QB on Saturday night.

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Mason Kinsey has been the definition of an underdog ever since the moment he arrived in Nashville after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Berry College.

Kinsey is someone who hasn’t found a way to crack the 53-man roster on a full-time basis just yet, but he’s clearly someone the team likes enough to continue to keep around.

While Kinsey is primarily a slot receiver and special teamer, he actually got a few snaps at quarterback during the Titans’ preseason victory over the Minnesota Vikings thanks to the injury to quarterback Will Levis.

“(On Friday) they told me there was going to be a chance if Malik (Willis) went down, obviously, which I’m glad he didn’t,” Kinsey said after the game on Saturday, per AtoZ Sports’ Buck Reising. “Before the game today, [head coach Mike Vrabel] was like, ‘I may put you in for a snap or two,’ so that was kind of cool he threw me a bone on that one.”

“It was a cool experience and it shows a little bit of trust, that they trusted me to do it,” Kinsey added. “It’s a compliment to me, for sure.”

On Sunday, Vrabel discussed what went into that decision and why he felt Kinsey deserved the opportunity.

“Mason is out there everyday,” Vrabel said, per Jim Wyatt. “During the time that he’s been on our practice squad, probably runs more than any player that we have on our roster. Running receiver, playing DB throughout practice that you guys may or may not see. I wanted to give him the opportunity.”

Vrabel and Kinsey both noted that the extent of his preparation consisted of a walkthrough of a play or two on Friday.

While Kinsey rightly got some attention for his role as the emergency signal-caller on Saturday night, he also played well as a receiver, with Kinsey leading the team with 37 yards in the winning effort.

Through two preseason contests, Kinsey has been the most consistent receiver on the team from a production standpoint, leading all Titans wideouts with 77 yards.

There’s no telling if his solid preseason will lead to a roster spot, but it’s clear that Kinsey has a fan in his head coach who, at the very least, genuinely appreciates everything he does for the team.

Titans’ top PFF grades, O-line stats, more from preseason Week 2

The Titans’ top PFF grades, offensive line, coverage and pass-rush stats from preseason Week 2.

In our final look back at the Tennessee Titans’ preseason Week 2 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, we’re taking a gander at the top Pro Football Focus grades, offensive line stats, and more from the contest.

The player with the highest overall grade on either side of the ball was defensive lineman Michael Dwunfour, who scored a 91.0 in his debut with the Titans. The veteran was the only player to score a 90 or higher.

On offense, the highest grade went to wide receiver Mason Kinsey, who notched a 79.9. Kinsey has been the Titans’ most consistent receiver in preseason play and led the team in receiving yards on Saturday night.

Now, the rest of the PFF grades, as well as the offensive line, pass-rush and coverage stats from preseason Week 2.

Watch: Titans’ Malik Willis putting in work during break before camp

Titans QB Malik Willis remains hard at work during the offseason break before training camp.

While the Tennessee Titans and the rest of the NFL are on a “break” before training camp begins later this month, quarterback Malik Willis and wide receiver Mason Kinsey remain hard at work, as do many players.

Willis, who is coming off a rough rookie campaign and is entering his second season in the NFL, currently figures to be on the roster bubble after the team drafted Will Levis in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.

By all accounts, the Liberty product has been outperforming Levis thus far, but doing that while in shorts and a t-shirt during the offseason program is hardly confirmation that Willis is locked into the backup job behind Ryan Tannehill.

Instead, Willis must keep the momentum going during training camp and the preseason and continue to outplay Levis if he wants the No. 2 job and a spot on the roster. Failure to do that could leave Willis among the final cuts.

Here’s the video of Willis throwing to Kinsey recently. It was originally posted to Kinsey’s Instagram story.

In our quarterbacks preview for training camp, Willis beats out Levis for the No. 2 job and secures his spot on the roster. We’ll see if that comes to fruition once Tennessee makes its final cuts on August 29.

Titans’ Mason Kinsey among practice squad elevations for Week 7

Titans cult hero, WR Mason Kinsey, will play in his second career game if active.

The Tennessee Titans elevated a pair of players from the practice squad for the Week 7 contest against the Indianapolis Colts, including cult hero and wide receiver, Mason Kinsey.

Kinsey, who has been a darling of a certain sect of Titans fans since being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020, will be playing in the second contest of his career, assuming he’s active.

Kinsey gets the nod over Dez Fitzpatrick, who was elevated last week but did nothing, as well as new practice squad addition, C.J. Board, who was brought in earlier this week.

The Titans were already short-handed at wide receiver but could also be without rookie slot receiver Kyle Philips, who was a late addition to the injury report on Friday with a hamstring issue and is questionable.

Along with Kinsey, linebacker Joe Schobert is also getting the nod from the practice squad with the team missing starting linebacker Zach Cunningham for a third straight game.

Schobert has now been elevated three times, meaning the team now must sign him to the active roster after this week or else he’ll be cut loose. The veteran made a huge impact play in Week 4 against the Colts, forcing a fumble that helped sealed Tennessee’s victory.
