The corresponding move for the addition of Taylor Stallworth has been made.

As announced on Friday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers have waived safety Myles Dorn to open up a roster spot for the team’s new defensive tackle. Stallworth’s signing was first reported by his agent Brett Tessler on Thursday.

Dorn joined the organization on a reserve/future deal back on Jan. 18. A local product, the Charlotte, N.C. native attended nearby Julius L. Chambers High School and played his college ball at the University of North Carolina from 2016 to 2019.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound defensive back broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 2020. He appeared in 14 games for Minnesota between 2021 and 2022, and played exclusively on special teams this past season.

As for the new guy, Stallworth brings over 305 pounds and five years’ worth of NFL experience—two of which came under head coach Frank Reich in Indianapolis. He played seven games in 2022, chalking up eight tackles between his time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans.

The Mobile, Ala. native attended the University of South Carolina from 2014 to 2017. There, he amassed 87 tackles (6.5 for a loss) and a sack over 36 games.

Stallworth then broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent for the New Orleans Saints in May of 2018. He appeared in 18 contests for New Orleans between 2018 and 2019, totaling 16 tackles and a sack.

He spent the 2022 campaign as a member of both the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans.

Texans re-sign DT Taylor Stallworth

The Houston Texans have re-signed defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth.

The Houston Texans liked what they saw from Taylor Stallworth in one game in 2022, and have decided to give him a shot throughout the team’s offseason workouts.

The Texans announced Monday they have re-signed the former New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, and Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman.

Stallworth played for Houston in the Week 14 encounter against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. The Texans lost 27-23, but Stallworth generated four combined tackles and a tackle for loss during his 20 defensive snaps.

Former coach Lovie Smith was pleased with the performance Stallworth showed against Dallas.

“He had two days, really one day of practice,” Smith said on Dec. 16, the day after the game. “It was finals week. We crammed as far as getting as much of the playbook in. Again, I thought he did a good job picking up stuff mentally and the way he played also.”

Houston placed Stallworth on injured reserve on Dec. 17 with a calf injury.

New Texans defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth could bolster team’s pass rush

Stallworth tallied three sacks in 2021 in a low-usage role for the Indianapolis #Colts

It isn’t often that a team acquires a premium talent off waivers, but the Houston Texans managed to do just that with their claim of defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth on Wednesday. The fifth-year lineman has bounced around the league since signing with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2018 but put up impressive numbers in limited action last season for the Indianapolis Colts.

He played in all 16 games for Indianapolis in 2021, but started just once. in these appearances, he managed to get to the quarterback three times and tallied a total of 16 tackles as well as one pass defense. Though these stats are relatively modest compared to those of other players who are in starting roles around the league, they moved the needle enough for the Kansas City Chiefs to sign him in free agency back in April and kept him around on Steve Spagnuolo’s defense until the team waived him on Tuesday.

Stallworth will have a chance to compete for a rotational role in Houston as a situational pass rusher who can fill in for the Texans’ starters on grueling drives that necessitate fresh legs up front. He should have no problem making an impact on the team in the near future, assuming that they decide to activate him in the final games on their 2022 schedule.

That opportunity may not come, though, as the Texans have been slow to give players previously claimed on waivers a chance to show what they can do for Houston’s offense. Eno Benjamin and Amari Rodgers, who were claimed by the team weeks ago, are still waiting for their shot to see the field despite the team’s struggle with offensive production in recent matchups.

Time will tell if Stallworth pans out as a viable option for the Texans’ defense, but for now, he should be considered a low-risk high-reward addition to the roster that may have upside as a piece in the team’s 2023 rebuild.

Texans claim Chiefs DT Taylor Stallworth off waivers, drop DE Michael Dwumfour

The Houston Texans have claimed former Kansas City Chiefs DT Taylor Stallworth off waivers and waived DE Michael Dwumfour.

The Houston Texans continue to refine their roster with five games to go in the regular season.

The Texans made a waiver claim for former Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth. The 6-2, 305-pounder played six games for the Chiefs in 2022, logging four combined tackles on 53 defensive snaps.

Stallworth spent 32 games with the Indianapolis Colts from 2020-21 and generated 16 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery.

Prior to the Colts, Stallworth was with the New Orleans Saints from 2018-19, where tallied 11 tackles, 1.0 sack, a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hit through 18 games.

The Texans played Dwumfour in seven games in 2022, where he produced six tackles and three quarterback hits with his 198 defensive snaps. Houston also played Dwumfour during 18 special teams snaps.

Chiefs to release DT Taylor Stallworth from 53-man roster

The #Chiefs have released DT Taylor Stallworth from their 53-man roster according to his agent.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a roster move ahead of their Week 14 game against the Denver Broncos.

According to NFL agent Brett Tessler, the Chiefs have released his client DT Taylor Stallworth from the 53-man roster. A free agent acquisition this offseason, Stallworth didn’t make the 53-man roster outright in Kansas City. He was signed to the active roster from the practice squad back in early October. He’s since appeared in six games, recording four total tackles.

Stallworth would have recorded his first career sack with the Chiefs in Week 13 against the Bengals, but the play was waved off with a roughing the passer penalty.

The Chiefs recently signed DT Brandon Williams and RB Melvin Gordon to the practice squad. It’s reasonable to expect with Stallworth’s release that one of those two players will be signed to the 53-man roster in his place.

Should Stallworth clear waivers, it’s possible that Kansas City could bring him back on the practice squad. It’s also possible that his time with the Chiefs has come to an end.

Chiefs to sign DT Taylor Stallworth to 53-man roster from practice squad

With DT Tershawn Wharton soon heading to season-ending injured reserve, we now know which player the #Chiefs plan to replace him with.

In the wake of losing DT Tershawn Wharton to a torn ACL, the Kansas City Chiefs are promoting one of their own from the practice squad to replace him.

According to NFL agent Brett Tessler, the Chiefs have signed DT Taylor Stallworth to the 53-man roster. A free agent acquisition this offseason after spending time with both the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts, Stallworth has 50 career NFL games under his belt. In 2021, he had his most productive season yet with the Colts with 16 combined tackles, three sacks, 22 total pressures and one pass batted.

During the preseason in Kansas City this year, Stallworth was a pleasant surprise, producing two sacks and five total pressures. The performance wasn’t enough to earn him a roster spot as he was released during 53-man roster cuts and signed to the practice squad.

Stallworth patiently waited for his opportunity with the Chiefs and it appears that he’ll now have it. He could prove to be a valuable member of the defensive line rotation in Kansas City moving forward with Wharton out of the picture. Wharton had played 140 defensive snaps on the season so far, so there should be some snaps to go around.

It’s worth noting that Wharton hasn’t been placed on injured reserve yet, but you can expect that to potentially be the corresponding move to free up space on the 53-man roster for Stallworth. There are also a number of other moves the team could look to make this week with Trent McDuffie expected to make his return from injured reserve.

Contract details for new Chiefs DT Taylor Stallworth

Taylor Stallworth’s signing yields another good contract for the #Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to come away with some exceptional deals in free agency. That remains the case with their latest signing in DT Taylor Stallworth.

According to the folks at Over The Cap, Stallworth’s one-year contract carries a $1.035 million minimum base salary. $300,000 is guaranteed at signing and in the event of injury or otherwise. He’ll receive an additional $152,500 in roster bonus. He’ll count just $1,047,500 against the 2022 salary cap for Kansas City as the result of this being a veteran salary benefit contract. That essentially means the Chiefs get to sign Stallworth, a player who has four accrued NFL seasons, for what amounts to a veteran minimum salary.

It remains to be seen what type of role Stallworth will find with the Chiefs in 2022, but his contract protects Kansas City if he fails to latch on. Should the Chiefs decide to part ways with Stallworth before or during 53-man roster cuts, they’d save over $700K by releasing him and eat just $300K in dead money.

That said, there’s no reason to believe that Stallworth won’t take full advantage of this opportunity. He’s coming off a season where he saw newfound success as a pass-rusher, playing the most snaps of his four-year NFL career. Should he be able to continue to grow and play up to his potential, we’ll be looking back on this deal as one of the steals of the offseason.
