Colts free agent DT Taylor Stallworth signs with Chiefs

Taylor Stallworth is signing with the Chiefs.

Former Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday.

Stallworth, who emerged as a solid rotational player in 2021, visited the Chiefs on Monday. He was a restricted free agent but after the Colts opted not to apply a tender, Stallworth became an unrestricted free agent when the new league year began.

Stallworth emerged as a pleasant surprise for the Colts during the 2021 season. Despite a limited role in 2021, Stallworth had 3.0 sacks and 12 quarterback hits.

It isn’t clear why the Colts were so comfortable letting him walk in free agency without even applying the “right of first refusal” tender, which would give them the chance to match an offer from another team.

Regardless, the Colts are likely going into the draft looking to add some depth along the defensive line to work behind DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart.

Chiefs are signing former Colts DT Taylor Stallworth

After a successful free agent visit, the #Chiefs are set to sign former #Colts DT Taylor Stallworth.

After a successful free agent visit, the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with former New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts DT Taylor Stallworth according to his agent Brett Tessler.

A former teammate of Chiefs CB Rashad Fenton at the University of South Carolina in 2018, Stallworth first came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Saints. Stallworth made the Saints’ 53-man roster out of training camp, spending the 2018 and 2019 seasons in New Orleans. After leaving The Big Easy, Stallworth caught on with the Colts, spending two seasons in Indianapolis before becoming an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Stallworth, 26, has appeared in 50 games spanning four NFL seasons. He’s coming off of his best season yet, serving in a rotational role with the Colts in 2021. On 332 defensive snaps played, Stallworth recorded 16 combined tackles, three sacks, 22 total pressures and one pass batted.

Stallworth figures as a potential replacement for Jarran Reed, who signed a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers during free agency. Reed played 713 snaps in 2021 with Kansas City, amassing 43 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, 12 QB hits, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a pass batted. Stallworth hasn’t played close to that number of snaps, but his production could take a big jump with the Chiefs in 2022.

Colts free agent DT Taylor Stallworth to visit Chiefs

Taylor Stallworth is visiting the Chiefs.

Indianapolis Colts free agent defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth is visiting the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, per his agent Brett Tessler.

Stallworth was a restricted free agent going into this offseason but the Colts opted not to apply a tender. Because of that, Stallworth became an unrestricted free agent with the ability to meet and sign with any team of his choosing.

It was a bit surprising to see the Colts let Stallworth walk without even applying a “right of first refusal” tender, which would allow them to match any offer he received.

Stallworth emerged as a solid role player for the Colts during the 2021 season. Despite a limited role in 2021, Stallworth had 3.0 sacks and 12 quarterback hits and was a pleasant surprise as a depth piece on the defensive line.

The Colts have been relatively quiet when it comes to free agency but Stallworth may find a new home in Kansas City after this meeting.

Chiefs hosting former Colts DT Taylor Stallworth on a visit

The #Chiefs are hosting former #Colts DT Taylor Stallworth on a free agent visit according to his agent.

The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing a free agent defensive tackle in for a visit on Tuesday.

According to NFL agent Brett Tessler, his client Taylor Stallworth is set to take a free agent visit with the Chiefs. A former undrafted free agent out of the University of South Carolina in 2018, Stallworth first caught on with the New Orleans Saints out of college.

Stallworth made the Saints’ 53-man roster out of training camp and spent two seasons in New Orleans. He was waived ahead of the start of the 2020 NFL season and signed with the Indianapolis Colts on a two-year deal just a week after his release. He stuck with the Colts for two seasons before becoming an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

In total, Stallworth has appeared in 50 games over fours seasons in the NFL. The 26-year-old had his best season yet in a rotational role with the Colts in 2021, playing 332 defensive snaps, recording 16 combined tackles, three sacks, 22 total pressures and one pass batted.

By the looks of it, Stallworth could be a potential replacement for Jarran Reed, who signed a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers during free agency. Reed played 713 snaps in 2021 with Kansas City, recording 43 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, 12 QB hits, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a pass batted. If Stallworth is capable of playing another 400 snaps or so and producing at the level he did last season, he could have a greater impact than Reed had last season.

Report: Colts not expected to tender RFA DT Taylor Stallworth

The Colts are not expected to place a tender on restricted free agent DT Taylor Stallworth.

The Indianapolis Colts are not expected to place a tender on restricted free agent defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Though this may be somewhat of a surprise considering the improvements he showed during the 2021 season, the Colts haven’t made many moves ahead of free agency when it comes to their players set to hit the market.

The two sides could still come to a deal after the new league year begins, but it seems for now that Stallworth will be hitting the market.

With Stallworth hitting the market, this could open up a role for veteran Quinton Jefferson to be signed. Jefferson has seemed like a solid fit for the Colts defense in the past and with Gus Bradley taking over as defensive coordinator, it becomes even more so.

Despite a limited role in 2021, Stallworth had 3.0 sacks and 12 quarterback hits and was a pleasant surprise as a depth piece on the defensive line.

We’ll see what happens when the legal tampering period opens on Monday, but right now it appears Stallworth will be hitting the market.
