Former Alabama QB signs with Hamilton Tiger-Cats of CFL

The former Alabama QB will begin his professional career in Canada!

After spending his true freshman season with the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2019, Taulia Tagovailoa transferred to Maryland. There, he would play under former Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley and become the Big Ten’s all-time passing leader.

After the conclusion of the 2023 season, Tagovailoa entered the transfer portal. The NCAA decided that he had used up all of his collegiate eligibility, rendering him unable to transfer and continue playing.

He was not selected in the 2024 NFL draft or picked up as an undrafted free agent. Instead, he has signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL to the team’s practice squad.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Tagovailoa as his professional career gets started.

Seahawks updated 90-man roster by jersey number with new UDFAs

In addition to the new arrivals, a couple of Seahawks players have changed jersey numbers for this year.

Here is the updated Seattle Seahawks 90-man roster by jersey number for the 2024 offseason.

Latest updates: Undrafted rookie linebacker Easton Gibbs has switched from No. 57 to No. 40, while No. 57 has gone to rookie defensive tackle Nathan Pickering. Also, defensive tackle Buddha Jones has taken No. 62 and linebacker Devin Richardson is wearing No. 43.

QB Taulia Tagovailoa to participate in Cardinals’ rookie minicamp

Tagovailoa will try out with the Cardinals after being in Seattle’s rookie minicamp last week.

The Arizona Cardinals do not have a rookie quarterback on their roster currently. Because rookie minicamp begins Thursday, that means the Cardinals need to bring one in.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, they have invited Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, to participate in rookie minicamp as a tryout player.

Tagovailoa participated in the Seattle Seahawks’ rookie minicamp last week and gets another shot.

He is 5-10 and 200 pounds and started three seasons at Maryland. In 2023, he passed for 3,377 yards, 25 touchdowns and threw 11 interceptions.

He is undersized and has quick feet but was not a dynamic runner (only 205 career rushing yards) and does not have the great arm talent his brother does.

The Cardinals currently have three quarterbacks on the roster — starter Kyler Murray, backup Desmond Ridder, whom they acquired via trade this offseason, and 2023 fifth-round pick Clayton Tune.

Undrafted QB Taulia Tagovailoa bounces into a second rookie minicamp

Tagovailoa is the Big Ten’s all-time leading passer but he’s struggling to get a foot into the NFL door

The path to the NFL has taken another detour for former Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. After going undrafted in last month’s 2024 NFL Draft, Tagovailoa is now trying to latch on with his second NFL team.

Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, participated in the Seattle Seahawks’ rookie minicamp last week but was not signed by the team. He’s now moved onto the Arizona Cardinals, who extended a rookie minicamp invite for the 24-year-old, per numerous reports.

The Big Ten’s all-time passing yardage leader with over 11,000 career yards, Tagovailoa started 45 games in four years at Maryland after transferring from Alabama. His 67.1 percent career completion rate is also the highest in Big Ten Conference history for qualifying passers.

Despite the gaudy stats, Tagovailoa is undersized at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds. He unsuccessfully applied to the NCAA for another season of eligibility for 2024.

Seahawks invite another quarterback to 2024 rookie minicamp

According to Mike Garafolo at NFL Network, former Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa will also be participating in rookie minicamp.

Ten days ago former Ohio State and Gannon quarterback Kory Curtis broke the news that he had been invited to the Seattle Seahawks’ 2024 rookie minicamp, which will take place this coming weekend.

Last night we learned of another rookie quarterback who scored an invite. According to Mike Garafolo at NFL Network, former Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa will also be participating in rookie minicamp.

Tagovailoa (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) is the younger brother of Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He has some of the same traits that have made Tua a top-10 starter at this level, including mobility and a big arm.

After one season as a backup at Alabama he transferred to Maryland, where he eventually became the starter. All together Tagovailoa appeared in 45 college games, totaling over 11,000 passing yards, 77 touchdowns and 37 interceptions for a 146.1 rating. Tagovailoa added another 205 yards and 13 touchdowns as a rusher.

Tagovailoa has some real ability, but it’s tough for players who weren’t signed outright as undrafted free agents to land with a team.

Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa declares for the 2024 NFL Draft

Here’s our update on the draft status of Taulia Tagovailoa.

More quarterback bloodlines are about to be injected into the NFL as Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa, brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa declares for the 2024 NFL Draft. This comes after Tagovailoa previously sought a waiver to his extend his eligibility for a sixth season.

Tagovailoa exits the college level as the Big Ten’s all-time passing leader and a three-year starter for the Maryland Terrapins. During Tagovailoa’s final season, he put up the best numbers of his career with 3,377 passing yards, 30 total touchdowns, and maintained a quarterback rating of 145.1. While the team as a whole failed to meet expectations, Tagovailoa was a standout.

Not quite in the same talent range as his brother, Tagovailoa is still an experienced quarterback with enough arm strength to be a high-level backup at the NFL level. With high-level processing, plenty of starting experience, and good intangibles, Tagovailoa should find himself drafted sometime during day three as a potential long-term backup during the 2024 NFL Draft.

Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa enters transfer portal

The Big Ten’s all-time passing leader has entered the transfer portal

In an interesting move on Friday, Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovaiola entered the transfer portal. However, as of Friday, Tagovaiola has no available eligibility to use at another school.

The former four-star quarterback and Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback spent his true freshman season at Alabama in 2019 before spending each of the last four seasons with the Maryland Terrapins.

During his career at Maryland, the Hawaii native set the Big Ten All-Time Passing yards record with 11,256 passing yards. He also has 76 career touchdown passes as a Terrapin to 37 interceptions. This past season, he completed 66% of his passes for 3,377 yards and 25 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

In order to play next season, Tagovailoa would need to be awarded an extra season of eligibility from the NCAA. If an additional season is awarded, he’ll be immediately eligible to play as a graduate transfer. There is still the possibility he chooses to enter the NFL Draft this spring.

Taulia Tagovailoa enters transfer portal, which could affect Malachi Nelson’s future

Taulia Tagovailoa is not expected to receive a waiver for another year of eligibility, but let’s see what happens.

Maryland Terrapin quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has entered the transfer portal, but with a twist. The quarterback is seeking a waiver to play an additional season. If the waiver is not granted, Tagovailoa would presumably enter the NFL draft. If he gets the waiver, however, the portal could change not just for Tagovailoa, but for Malachi Nelson, who has entered the portal after transferring out of USC.

First, let’s go to College Sports Wire’s story on Tagovailoa:

“Tagovailoa is technically out of eligibility at the moment, but (247Sports’ Chris) Hummer reported that he is seeking a waiver for an additional year. According to the report, the former Maryland quarterback will argue he burned a redshirt year in 2019 with the (Alabama) Crimson Tide when he played five games but twice only came on the field for two snaps.”

It doesn’t seem likely that the waiver will be granted. However, if the waiver is granted, the speculation surrounding Tagovailoa is that he might be interested in the Miami Hurricanes. Malachi Nelson and Miami have also been linked.

Tagovailoa going to Miami — if it happens — would presumably bump Nelson elsewhere. This might be why Nelson visited Boise State.

If Nelson continues to swing and miss in the portal, there is still a chance he could withdraw from the portal and return to USC as Miller Moss’s backup for 2024. That would not be a bad outcome for the Trojans.
