Colts activate WR T.Y. Hilton from IR among several roster moves

Colts activated WR T.Y. Hilton from IR, elevated K Michael Badgley & Jordan Lucas and placed K Rodrigo Blankenship on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts activated wide receiver T.Y. Hilton from the injured reserve list among many roster moves, the team announced Saturday.

Hilton returned to practice this week and even though he only truly had one practice (Wednesday and Thursday were walkthroughs), the team feels confident in his conditioning to see his debut against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

It isn’t clear how many snaps Hilton will get in the game. There is a chance the Colts limit him due to the fact that he hasn’t had much football conditioning while recovering on the injured reserve list throughout the season.

That said, his history against the Texans is always worth a shot to get him on the field.

Among the other moves made, the Colts elevated kicker Michael Badgley and safety Jordan Lucas from the practice squad to the active roster. Badgley was signed this week due to the hip injury keeping Rodrigo Blankenship out.

Blankenship was the other move. The Colts placed him on the injured reserve list, essentially swapping him with Hilton. The hip injury had the potential to cause Blankenship to miss two games so it makes sense to get him off the active roster so he can heal up.

With Badgley and Lucas elevated, the roster is at 55 players for game day.

Colts’ T.Y. Hilton has chance to make debut vs. Texans in Week 6

The Colts will make a decision on T.Y. Hilton’s status in Week 6 on Saturday.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton has a chance to make his season debut on Sunday against the Houston Texans, which means he would have to be activated off the injured reserve list.

Returning to practice this week for the first time since suffering a neck injury during the preseason, it isn’t clear if Hilton is conditioned enough to play a full game yet.

Head coach Frank Reich told the media Friday that’s what it will come down to in the decision to activate him (or wait another week).

“T.Y. (Hilton), [Friday] was really his first full practice. Obviously, because we had the walk-thru on Wednesday and we had a jog-thru on Thursday. So, today was his first practice,” Reich said. “I thought he looked good. He was into it all week. I think we need to see how he comes out of this practice, and we’ll probably make that decision [Saturday].”

Hilton’s neck injury included a disc that essentially struck a nerve. He didn’t have feeling on the left side of his body. It got to the point where he seriously contemplated retirement and even sought counsel in his best friend and former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

It’s going to be hard for Hilton to be activated after just now returning to practice. Though there might not be any pain, getting back into playing shape will take more than just one practice.

“Considering his experience, his competitiveness and just who he is, his leadership – if there is anyone who can do it, it’s him,” Reich said of Hilton.

The Colts’ passing offense has been making some strides and has been working through second-year wideout Michael Pittman Jr., who has shown a lot of promise taking over the unit.

It isn’t clear if Hilton will be activated on Saturday for the game, but it should happen within the next week.

T.Y. Hilton contemplated retirement, sought Andrew Luck’s counsel

Colts WR T.Y. Hilton contemplated retirement and even sought counsel from Andrew Luck.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is expecting to return from the injured reserve list soon, but the journey to this point wasn’t always optimistic.

Hilton admitted he contemplated retirement after suffering a neck injury during the preseason. The veteran wide receiver sought counsel in his best friend and someone who has dealt with that mindset—former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

Hilton joked that talking to Luck about retirement probably wasn’t the brightest idea but told the media Thursday that Luck advised him not to make any rash decisions about retirement.

“The first two days when I got home, I almost hung it up. I can’t even lie,” Hilton said Thursday. “I talked to Andrew [Luck] and that was probably the wrong thing to do.”

As soon as Hilton said that line, the media room erupted in laughter. Seeking retirement advice from Luck, who shockingly called it a career at the age of 28 back in 2018, should probably be the one topic to stay away from.

But in true Luck fashion, he gave Hilton sound advice to think through the decision and make sure it’s exactly what he wants before coming to a conclusion.

“Me and him went out a couple times and he came over to my house. We talked and he just wanted me to be good with it, get back healthy, don’t rush it and take your time,” Hilton said. “Other than that, he was a big supporter.”

Hilton said he also sought counsel from his family as they continued to check on him throughout the process of healing.

The neck injury that Hilton suffered was a disc injury that was blocking a nerve. He didn’t have any feeling on his left side.

Hilton has been on the injured reserve list for the first five weeks of the season but was designated to return this week, which makes him eligible to return for the Week 6 game against the Houston Texans. Because of course.

It will be interesting to see what Hilton looks like when he returns, and it’s probably a good thing for the Colts that Luck didn’t convince his former teammate to hand up the spikes.

Colts designate WR T.Y. Hilton to return from IR

Colts designated WR T.Y. Hilton, LB Jordan Glasgow to return from IR.

The Indianapolis Colts designated wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and linebacker Jordan Glasgow to return from the injured reserve list, the team announced Wednesday.

This is a formality in the process of getting them activated to the roster as they can now start practicing with the team in hopes of returning soon. Both players are eligible to return for the Week 6 game against the Houston Texans if the training staff clears it.

Having been designated for return, the Colts have 21 days to activate Hilton and Glasgow to the roster. If they do not do so before that window closes, they will be place back on the injured reserve list for the remainder of the season.

Hilton has been on the injured reserve list since suffering a neck injury that required a procedure following the preseason. In his absence, Michael Pittman Jr. has shined in the role of WR1.

Glasgow has been on the injured reserve list since suffering a concussion in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Colts injury updates: A pair of DBs in concussion protocol

Here are the latest injury updates for the Colts heading into Week 6.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich provided some updates on injuries when meeting with the media Tuesday following the Week 5 loss against the Baltimore Ravens.

The biggest concern entering Week 6 will be the secondary as a pair of defensive backs were placed into the concussion protocol.

Here are the injury updates for the Colts as they kick off preparation for Week 6:

Colts have major injuries to monitor entering Week 5

These are the injuries to monitor for the Colts entering Week 5.

Like most teams through the first month of the season, the Indianapolis Colts are dealing with a bevy of injuries on both sides of the ball. They are not alone in this narrative.

Coming off of their first win of the season against the Miami Dolphins in Week 4, head coach Frank Reich said during Monday’s press conference with the media that the team came out with no new injuries to report. That’s encouraging given the situation the Colts are in.

Now entering a prime-time matchup with the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5, there will be a number of injuries to monitor when the Colts return for practice on Thursday.

Here are the major injuries to monitor throughout the week leading up to Indy’s first prime-time game of the season:

Colts WR T.Y. Hilton’s return from IR still unclear

It still isn’t clear when T.Y. Hilton will return from the IR list.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is eligible to return to practice at any point as he remains on the injured reserve list, but it still isn’t clear when that will happen.

The veteran wide receiver is still recovering from a procedure on his neck. He’s missed the first four games of the season, and head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday that Hilton is getting closer, but it still remains to be seen what the timeline looks like.

“Closer, but nothing worth reporting at this point,” Reich said Monday of Hilton’s status.

Before Hilton can officially return, the Colts will designate him to return from the injured reserve list. This kicks off a 21-day window in which Hilton can practice while staying on the reserve list. The Colts must activate him before that 21-day window expires. If they don’t, he reverts back to the reserve list for the rest of the season.

Currently going through that process is rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who was designated to return last week but has yet to be activated.

In Hilton’s absence, Michael Pittman Jr. has led the way in every category except for touchdowns. Pittman Jr. leads the team in targets (36), receptions (23), receiving yards (279) while leading the wide receiver room in snaps played (252).

Reich has been pleased with what he’s gotten out of the wide receiver room in Hilton’s absence.

“I think they’ve performed well. Very happy with the development – each guy has a unique role that he plays,” Reich said. “I think they’ve stepped up in T.Y.’s (Hilton) absence. We miss T.Y. He’s our leader, but I think the guys have stepped up strong.”

It isn’t clear when Hilton will return but as soon as they designate him, he will have 21 days to be activated.

Colts’ injury updates: Several starters in question for Week 4

Here are the latest injury updates for the Colts coming going into Week 4.

The Indianapolis Colts aren’t even a month into the 2021 season yet but they now have several starting players dealing with injuries that have them in question to play in Week 4.

Coming off of an uninspiring loss to the Tennessee Titans, the Colts are now 0-3 and facing a long rest of the season if they can’t get things drastically turned around.

Head coach Frank Reich met with the media on Monday to give some updates on injuries. Let’s dive in:

Colts’ T.Y. Hilton (neck) not quite ready for return from IR

Colts WR T.Y. Hilton is making progress but not quite ready for a return from IR.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton has missed the first three games of the season after undergoing a neck procedure during the preseason and is eligible to return from the injured reserve this week.

While Hilton is eligible to return following the three-week requirement, head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday that the Ghost isn’t quite ready to return from the reserve list despite the progress he’s made.

“T.Y. (Hilton) is making great progress. I’ve talked to him, seen him out there doing his rehab and getting going, and I’m encouraged with what I’ve seen. I’m encouraged with what I’ve seen,” Reich said. “I don’t think we’re quite there yet with him, but really encouraged with the progress he’s making.”

The Colts offense has been lacking explosiveness to open the season. Whether it’s due to the playcalling or the personnel that’s on the field, the Colts could use some veteran savvy like Hilton back on the field.

Hilton seemed to have a pretty solid connection with quarterback Carson Wentz, who continues to play through two sprained ankles. The offensive line is also giving up pressure at an extremely high rate.

It would be nice to have another receiver of Hilton’s talent back in the lineup, but it appears we may be waiting a bit longer to see that.

Colts announce team captains for 2021 season

Here are the team captains for the Colts for the 2021 season.

The Indianapolis Colts announced their team captains for the 2021 season as voted on by the players.

There will be little surprise to the group of players that will have a “C” on their chest throughout the upcoming season. Here are the 2021 team captains for the Colts:

  • QB Carson Wentz
  • WR T.Y. Hilton
  • LG Quenton Nelson
  • DT DeForest Buckner
  • LB Darius Leonard
  • LB Zaire Franklin

Wentz, Hilton and Nelson will be representing the offense. The votes for Hilton and Nelson go without question. It’s encouraging to see the players vote for Wentz to be a captain given all the rumors that went down during his time in Philadelphia.

Buckner and Leonard will be representing the defense. That comes as little surprise given the impact they have both on the field and in the locker room.

Franklin represents the special teams unit, which also is in line with how his career has gone with the Colts since they drafted him in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL draft.
