Colts sign DT Caeveon Patton, waive LB Jordan Glasgow

Colts signed DT Caeveon Patton and waived LB Jordan Glasgow, DT McKinley Williams III.

The Indianapolis Colts signed defensive tackle Caeveon Patton and waived linebacker Jordan Glasgow and defensive tackle McKinley Williams III, the team announced Thursday.

Patton, an undrafted rookie out of Texas State, was one of the five players attending the Colts’ minicamp this week on a tryout basis.

In 44 career games at Texas State, Patton recorded 4.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss.

Glasgow is an interesting waive, to say the least, considering how much work he’s done on special teams since he was drafted in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft. Assuming he doesn’t re-sign with the team, expect veteran Brandon King to take Glasgow’s spot on special teams.

Glasgow appeared in 25 games across two seasons with the Colts, playing 75% and 65% of the special teams snaps, respectively.

Williams signed with the Colts as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2022 NFL draft out of Syracuse.

Colts designate WR T.Y. Hilton to return from IR

Colts designated WR T.Y. Hilton, LB Jordan Glasgow to return from IR.

The Indianapolis Colts designated wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and linebacker Jordan Glasgow to return from the injured reserve list, the team announced Wednesday.

This is a formality in the process of getting them activated to the roster as they can now start practicing with the team in hopes of returning soon. Both players are eligible to return for the Week 6 game against the Houston Texans if the training staff clears it.

Having been designated for return, the Colts have 21 days to activate Hilton and Glasgow to the roster. If they do not do so before that window closes, they will be place back on the injured reserve list for the remainder of the season.

Hilton has been on the injured reserve list since suffering a neck injury that required a procedure following the preseason. In his absence, Michael Pittman Jr. has shined in the role of WR1.

Glasgow has been on the injured reserve list since suffering a concussion in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Colts elevate DT Antwaun Woods, place LB Jordan Glasgow on IR

Colts elevated DT Antwaun Woods and placed LB Jordan Glasgow on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated defensive tackle Antwaun Woods from the practice squad to the active roster and placed linebacker Jordan Glasgow on the injured reserve list, the team announced Friday.

With a run-heavy approach likely coming from the Titans offense in Week 3, it makes sense that the Colts want some heavier bodies on the defensive line.

Glasgow was ruled out for the matchup after suffering a concussion in Week 2 and failing to practice all week. Now being on the injured reserve list, the second-year special teams player will miss the next three games, including Sunday’s divisional bout.

Former Michigan football defender placed on injured reserve

Huge bummer! Get better soon!

The Indianapolis Colts have several former Wolverines on their roster, headlined by this year’s first-round pick in edge rusher Kwity Paye. In addition to Paye, the Colts have former Michigan football wideout Tarik Black on the team, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Texas. But the other recent player who wore a winged helmet will be out for at least three weeks.

According to Pro Football Talk, 2020 sixth-round pick and Michigan football linebacker Jordan Glasgow has been placed on injured reserve due to a concussion and will have to miss at least three games. Glasgow is primarily a special teams player for Indianapolis.

The Colts already had ruled out linebacker Jordan Glasgow for Week 3. Glasgow has a concussion.

On Friday afternoon, the team placed Glasgow on injured reserve. He is eligible to return after missing three games.

Glasgow, 25, played both games this season, making two special teams tackles. He has seen action on 35 special teams snaps but none on defense this year.

In 15 career games over the past two seasons, Glasgow has played 303 snaps on special teams. He has yet to see his first snap on defense. Glasgow has 11 career tackles.

While Glasgow has not yet played on the defensive side of the ball yet for the Colts, he showed his prowess early, with a big punt block in 2020 in a featured game against the Chicago Bears.

Glasgow is the third of his brothers to have been an NFL draft pick after having walked on at Michigan.

Colts rule out RT Braden Smith, LB Jordan Glasgow vs. Titans

The Colts ruled out RT Braden Smith and LB Jordan Glasgow for Week 3.

The Indianapolis Colts ruled out right tackle Braden Smith (foot) and linebacker Jordan Glasgow (concussion) for the Week 3 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

This will be Smith’s second game in a row in which he will be on the sideline with a foot injury he suffered in the season-opening loss against the Seattle Seahawks. He hasn’t been able to practice since.

Glasgow was placed into the league’s concussion protocol following the Week 2 loss against the Los Angeles Rams and wasn’t able to practice either this week.

Head coach Frank Reich also told the media Friday that quarterback Carson Wentz is a game-time decision after returning to practice on Friday.

Colts’ Jordan Glasgow in concussion protocol

Colts LB Jordan Glasgow is in the concussion protocol.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Jordan Glasgow is in the league’s concussion protocol following the team’s 27-24 loss against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2.

Colts head coach Frank Reich told the media Monday that Glasgow will be in the league’s protocol after seeing the trainers following the game.

“As far as injuries, after the game Jordan Glasgow did see the trainers and ends up in concussion protocol,” Reich said.”

Glasgow may not be a household name when it comes to the defensive side of the ball, but he’s a major impact player on special teams. He’s one of the core players on punt and kick returns and has been since the Colts drafted him in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft.

He played 65% of the special teams snaps on Sunday against the Rams, which was tied for the third-most on the roster.

Concussions are different for every player so this will be something to monitor on the injury report.

Arizona Cardinals 2020 redraft doesn’t change every pick

We make the Cardinals’ 2020 draft selections with the benefit of hindsight.

A year later, we can look at the Arizona Cardinals’ draft class and wonder if they made the right selections. The Cardinals didn’t get many contributions from their rookie class. Linebacker Isaiah Simmons played a limited role. Running back Eno Benjamin was never active. Linebacker Evan Weaver spent the year on the practice squad. Tackle Josh Jones played very few snaps all season. Defensive linemen Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence missed time with injuries and got some playing time.

Should the Cardinals have made other selections?

Let’s go back to each pick in last year’s draft and do a redraft.

4 Colts named to PFWA 2020 All-Rookie team

Jonathan Taylor led the Colts in the All-Rookie team.

Four Indianapolis Colts players were named to the 2020 All-Rookie team, voted by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA).

Those four Colts include running back Jonathan Taylor, kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, kick returner Isaiah Rodgers and special teams linebacker Jordan Glasgow.

Taylor is an easy pick here. He finished the season having earned the rookie rushing title and was third in the NFL in rushing yards. His 11 rushing touchdowns were also tied for the most among rookie running backs.

Blankenship was fifth in the NFL with 32 field goals made and 10th in the NFL with 43 extra-point attempts made.

Rodgers was an electric part of the return team. He took one kick back for a touchdown while his 28.8 yards per kick return was the third-highest average in the league behind only Andre Roberts (30.0) and Cordarrelle Patterson (29.1).

Glasgow was a force on the special teams unit having played the third-most snaps on the roster during that phase of the game.

The Colts led the league with four rookies being voted to the All-Rookie team by the PFWA.

Colts’ special teams unit ranked 4th in NFL

Colts had an elite special teams unit.

Throughout the 2020 season, the Indianapolis Colts were lauded each and every week in how strong their special teams unit was by opposing teams. That trend will continue into the offseason.

In his annual rankings of special teams units, Rick Gosselin of Sports Illustrated had the Colts ranked as the fourth-best unit in the NFL behind only the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions.

Gosselin also mentioned that the Colts had the biggest jump from 2019, going from the 29th-ranked unit to fourth.

The greatest improvement was charted by the Colts, who vaulted from 29th in 2019 to fourth in 2020. Special-teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone was hired by the Colts in 2018 away from the Patriots, where he had been O’Brien’s assistant. New England then hired Judge to replace Ventrone. Now it’s Achord’s turn.

The Colts had a strong unit throughout that phase of the game. They had the NFL’s leader in special teams tackles, George Odum, who was named a first-team All-Pro for the first time in his career.

They also got strong contributions on the coverage unit from linebackers Zaire Franklin and Jordan Glasgow while long snapper Luke Rhodes continues to be one of the underrated parts of that group.

In the return game, cornerback Isaiah Rodgers was electric on kick returns. He was third in the league averaging 28.8 return yards per kick. Meanwhile, running back Nyheim Hines was sixth in yards per punt return with an average of 10 yards.

This unit was disciplined, physical and well-coached by Ventrone. They were able to flip the field constantly while punting and gave the offense an advantage with their returns.

Special teams may go overlooked often, but the Colts had one of the best units in the league in 2020, and it was a big reason they had the success they did.

Colts injury report: CB Rock Ya-Sin in concussion protocol

Wednesday’s injury report.

The Indianapolis Colts (10-5) released their first injury report of the week on Wednesday as they prepare for the regular-season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-14) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Colts revealed some tough news Wednesday in that left tackle Anthony Castonzo will miss the remainder of the season due to ankle surgery. He missed the Week 16 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers because of the injury and the team felt it best he get it corrected—even if that means missing the rest of the campaign.

Here’s a look at the first injury report of the week for the Colts:

*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Name Position Injury Wed. Thur. Fri. Status
Denico Autry DE/DT Hip DNP
DeForest Buckner DT Ankle DNP
Trey Burton TE Rest DNP
Anthony Castonzo OT Knee DNP
Will Holden OT Ankle DNP
Justin Houston DE Rest DNP
Philip Rivers QB Toe DNP
Khari Willis S Concussion DNP
Rock Ya-Sin CB Concussion DNP
Marcus Johnson WR Quad LP
Michael Pittman Jr. WR Concussion LP
Jordan Glasgow LB Illness FP

Notes

  • The big injuries to monitor this week will be Denico Autry and DeForest Buckner. The latter has played through the ankle injury but it’s still worth monitoring.
  • The Colts have three players currently in the concussion protocol. Though it appears Michael Pittman Jr. has already taken that first step to returning. Rock Ya-Sin is a new addition to that list.
  • Frank Reich told the media Wednesday at Will Holden won’t play Sunday in the finale, which means the Colts have to dig even deeper into their depth to replace Castonzo.
  • Marcus Johnson returned to practice for the first time since injuring his quad in Week 14.
  • Rookie Jordan Glasgow returned from the reserve/COVID-19 list and should be good to go for Sunday.

The Colts have two more practices before the injury designations come out on Friday.
