Power rankings: Who are now the top five targets for the Big Ten in conference expansion?

The Big Ten likely isn’t done in the conference expansion arms race.

Early in August, the Big Ten made another big move in conference expansion, adding Oregon and Washington. The Big 12 followed suit, with their own flurry of moves.

But what’s next now for the Big Ten? Will they expand again? And who are the top targets?

The Big Ten is currently at 18 teams. They likely want to add two more teams within the next year if only to continue stockpiling programs. Where this leads the Big Ten is anyone’s guess.

After all, who would have thought that Rutgers and Maryland would become Big Ten members in 2014.

Keep in mind a couple of things when it comes to conference expansion and the Big Ten:

  • The conference only admits AAU members. This whittles down the list considerably, doesn’t it?
  • Football is driving the bus with basketball second.
  • Almost as important (if not as important) in all of this? Television markets being added to the conference.

This is really an arms race between the remaining Power Four conference to best position themselves for the next round of television negotiations.

A look at promotions for Notre Dame’s 2023 home volleyball matches

Want some free stuff?

As hard as it is for some to believe, there will be other sports at Notre Dame this fall besides football. Volleyball will play its home matches at Purcell Pavilion as it always does. No, Purcell Pavilion doesn’t only host basketball. It’s only fitting that on of the other indoor collegiate sports play at home there.

The Irish are hoping for big fan support as they try to improve on their 10-18 record from a year ago. And short of winning, there’s no better way to get people to come out to your matches than giving things away or having themes. That’s exactly what the Irish will be doing with their promotional schedule for the 2023 season.

Given that virtually all of you are coming to this site right now for football coverage, you’re probably reading this wondering why you would even think or care about volleyball. Well, if you like fun and free stuff, you might want to look at this:

Notre Dame-Miami game scheduled for 2024 pushed to 2026

Apologies to those who love to recall Catholics vs. Convicts.

Those who followed Notre Dame in the late 1980s remember the games against Miami all too well, particularly Catholics vs. Convicts. However, the programs haven’t met since the Hurricanes crushed the Irish, 41-8, in 2017. The good news is the rivalry finally will be renewed later this decade. The bad news is it now will take a year later than originally scheduled as reported by the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson:

This is perfectly understandable from the Hurricanes’ perspective. They aren’t going to drop any games against in-state rivals, and they sure won’t give up a home against Ball State just so they can go to South Bend. You don’t want to put yourself at any kind of scheduling disadvantage.

As for the Irish, they now need to find another home opponent for 2024. The remaining ones from the ACC are Louisville, Florida State and Virginia, and the Irish also play Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Pittsburgh and Wake Forest come to Notre Dame Stadium this upcoming season, so you can cross them off the list. 2025 will bring visits from NC State and Syracuse.

Maybe Boston College fills the spot since the Irish already are scheduled to travel to them in 2025? Or another Power Five school that has a 2024 opening? Perhaps a Group of Five school that’s never been to South Bend will get its chance? The speculation will run wild until a new opponent can be determined.

Alabama WBB program set to take on Syracuse as part of the SEC/ACC challenge

Alabama WBB receives opponents for first-ever SEC/ACC Challenge

Just like the men’s programs, the SEC and ACC are set to square off in a conference challenge as part of the non-conference schedule. Alabama and the SEC have played the Big 12 Challenge in the past, but time they meet up with the ACC.

The last time the Tide competed in a challenge was when they played Oklahoma State back during the 2020-21 season. Alabama finished 2-2 all-time in the challenge with wins over Oklahoma State as well Kansas.

The Alabama women will travel to Syracuse, NY to face off against Syracuse for the first time in program history. Both programs posted 20+ wins last season with Alabama qualifying for the NCAA Tournament while the Orange ended up in the WNIT. Earlier today, the women also received the entirety of their conference schedule that includes their home and away opponents.

Matchups for 2023 ACC/SEC Women’s Basketball Challenge unveiled

The Irish will get a historic opponent.

With the Big Ten no longer broadcasting on ESPN, the ACC’s annual battle with that conference came to an end. However, ESPN wasn’t willing to let the idea of teams in two major conferences playing each other die. So the SEC was called in to fill the gap left by the Big Ten after ending its annual series with the Big 12. We now know who will be playing who in both the men’s and women’s challenges.

This opens up a world of possibilities for new rivalries to form or old rivalries, perhaps from the NCAA Tournament or notable past nonconference meetings, to reignite. We know the SEC is king in college football, but we’ll see how strong it is in college basketball. The ACC has provided some quality teams recently, and there are a couple of historic and contending teams in the SEC, so in at least some challenge games, that quality should shine through.

Here the matchups for the women’s challenge:

The Irish are headed to the Palmetto State.

We know the SEC is king in college football, but we’ll see how strong it is in college basketball. Then again, the ACC hasn’t been great the past couple of years, so maybe this won’t be the best time to compare the two conferences unless the ACC comes roaring out of the gate.

Two-time Notre Dame opponent Carmelo Anthony retires from basketball

Farewell, Melo.

Carmelo Anthony is a lock for the Basketball Hall of Fame, and why wouldn’t he be? He was a 10-time NBA All-Star, made six All-NBA teams and won three Olympic gold medals. Plus, he was named to the league’s 75th anniversary team. Now, nearly 20 years after he was drafted, he has announced his retirement:

While leading Syracuse to the 2003 national championship in his lone season there, Anthony beat Notre Dame twice, and both Big East games were close. When the programs played at Syracuse, he scored 10 points during a 14-2 Orange run that tied the game in the second half, ultimately scoring 26 points. When they reunited in South Bend not long after, he scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half of a game in which he also grabbed 10 rebounds.

As nice as it would have been to see Anthony battle the Irish more, he clearly made the right choice to be one-and-done. Here’s to whatever comes next for him.
