Chiefs legend Tamba Hali to serve as drum honoree for Wild Card matchup vs. Dolphins

#Chiefs legend Tamba Hali will serve as the drum honoree for Kansas City’s playoff matchup against the #Dolphins on Saturday.

Sparks are sure to fly during the Kansas City Chiefs’ matchup against the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card round of the AFC playoffs on Saturday. The frigid weather conditions predicted for the game and Tyreek Hill’s return to Kansas City have been key storylines ahead of the elimination tilt, but a major announcement on Thursday has provided an extra layer of intrigue to the game.

Legendary pass rusher Tamba Hali has been chosen to serve as the drum honoree for the consequential playoff matchup and should have no problem getting fans riled up as they endure the frosty temperatures at Arrowhead Stadium.

Hali, who played for the Chiefs from 2006 until his retirement in 2017, spent his entire career in Kansas City and is among the team’s most beloved icons of his era. He tallied 89.5 sacks throughout his 12-year career with the Chiefs, and became something of an institution on Kansas City’s defense, especially when he was paired with fellow pass rushers Jared Allen and Justin Houston.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid comments on Jamaal Charles’ Hall of Fame candidacy

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid gave Jamaal Charles his endorsement after news broke that the prolific running back will be on the Hall of Fame ballot in 2024.

Jamaal Charles is one of the best running backs in Kansas City Chiefs history, and when news broke that he is officially a Hall of Fame candidate for the class of 2024, nobody in Western Missouri was surprised.

Perhaps the least taken aback was Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who commented on Charles’ candidacy during his comments to reporters on Wednesday.

“[He is a] Hall of Fame [caliber] player,” Reid told the media. “He was tremendous, could do everything. I mean literally everything; he could have played wide receiver, did play running back. You give him the ball, you’re guaranteed – whatever his average is but it’s one of the highest if not the highest in league history. He’s a great player, wish I would have had him when he was even younger than what I got him at.”

It seems that Charles has Reid in his corner as he hopes to be forever enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The ringing endorsement that the long-tenured head coach gave Charles on Wednesday may give Hall of Fame voters that extra push to give him the ultimate honor next August.

Panthers QB Bryce Young talks about his first NFL training camp

Bryce Young talks all things Panthers Training Camp in interview with NFL Network

The hype of being the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft is over and this is where the rubber hits the road for former Alabama Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag]. This past week marked the beginning of training camps across the league.

Through OTA’s and other organized activities Young has been outstanding, both throwing the football and by what he has been able to pick up on mentally. Camp is the first chance the media and fans get to see what’s going on and meet with their players to gauge where they are all at heading into the season.

Young sat down at the Panthers training camp with franchise legend Steve Smith and Colleen Wolfe to discuss what his first training camp has been like in the NFL. The first question people always want to ask Young is what he expected coming into the league and what NFL practices and camps are like compared to what he experienced at Alabama with Nick Saban.

When asked that, he chuckles, because you can tell the media always want to know what goes on behind the curtains in Tuscaloosa and what kind of grueling work they put in. However, Young has the coach speak in him as he says,

“I didn’t know what to expect coming into training camp. It’s a new environment, something I have never done before. First training camp. Just being able to be here and bond with my teammates, being able to get away for a little bit and focus on ball and coming together as a team.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Bryce Young and other former Alabama players now in the NFL as the 2023 season approaches.

Fans react to Brandon Miller being drafted No. 2 overall in the 2023 NBA draft

Social Media reacts to Brandon Miller being selected No. 2 overall

With the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, the Charlotte Hornets selected [autotag]Brandon Miller[/autotag], the former Alabama basketball stand-out. Miller now becomes the second player in Alabama basketball history to be ranked No. 2 overall, which ties for the highest any player has ever been drafted in program history.

The Hornets are owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan, who has been a Miller fan all along. Miller will be teaming up with NBA All-Star LaMelo Ball to make up one of the best young duos in the sport. The Hornets have struggled to sustain any sort of success over the past decade, so Miller will have the opportunity to get plenty of shots and playing time as a rookie.

Miller shot just under 40% from three in his one year with the Crimson Tide, but it is his versatility and defensive upside that have had franchises salivating the past couple of months. Maybe Bryce Young and Miller can split a place in Charlotte together?

Celebrating Jerome Bettis

Happy Birthday to the one and only Bus!

Sing it with me…

The wheels on the bus go round and round,
round and round,
round and round.

The wheels on the bus go round and round,
all through the town!

“The Bus”, [autotag]Jerome Bettis[/autotag], turns 51 years old today.  Bettis was a high school football star in Detroit before attending college at Notre Dame where he starred for [autotag]Lou Holtz[/autotag].  His performance to conclude the 1991 season in the Sugar Bowl victory over Florida was legendary and 1992 saw him and Reggie Brooks put together a downright incredible rushing campaign.

Bettis went on to be drafted by the Los Angeles Rams where he played for three years before spending a decade with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he helped them to a Super Bowl XL title in his final season.  The final stop for “The Bus” was Canton, as Bettis was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

Just last year, Bettis returned to Notre Dame where he graduated after leaving early for the NFL.  Celebrate “The Bus” turning 51 today by looking back at photos of him through the years.

Jameson Williams gets Matt Stafford’s approval to wear No. 9 for Detroit Lions

Jameson Williams awesome gesture to Matthew Stafford

Despite suffering through a number of coaches, inconsistent rosters, injuries and more, Matthew Stafford showed up to work every day for the city of Detroit. Stafford left a lasting legacy through different charities and foundations that he and his family established in the community.

Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams prior to the 2021 season, but the love for Stafford has never wavered in Detroit as Lions fans rejoiced when he won the Super Bowl this past February.

Former Crimson Tide wide receiver, [autotag]Jameson Williams[/autotag], was selected No. 12 overall in the 2022 NFL by the Detroit Lions, and he hopes to leave the same impact on Detroit that Stafford did. Williams has generational speed and elite play-making talent that already makes fans fawn over him, but this classy move to the Detroit legend is what may truly win the city over.

Williams initially intended on wearing No. 18 for the Lions, however, No. 9 caught his eye and he was ready to make the switch. However, before officially doing that, Williams reached out to Stafford on his own to get his permission to wear the number. Stafford happily obliged, but the move by Williams is one that will definitely set a precedent moving forward.

Hopefully, Williams can continue his speedy recovery from a torn ACL and make his NFL debut as soon as possible.

Notre Dame legend passes away

One of the greatest to ever play at Notre Dame

One of the best players Notre Dame has seen has passed away at 67 years old.

Ross Browner, a two-time All-American selection, 1973 and 1977 national champion, and College Football Hall of Fame selection, died Tuesday.

Browner was the recipient of several awards while at Notre Dame including the Outland Trophy, UPI Lineman of the Year, Maxwell Award, and Lombardi Award.

After his time at Notre Dame, Browner was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals where he would go on to help them to an AFC championship and Super Bowl XVI appearance. He set a record for most tackles in a Super Bowl game in the Bengals loss to Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers.

Browner spent the majority of his career with the Bengals but had stops with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers and Green Bay Packers.

Browner is the father of former Pittsburgh Steelers lineman Max Starks and Rylan Browner, who played collegiate football at Arizona. His brothers Jimmie, Keith, and Joey all played in the NFL as well.

Browner was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

Notre Dame, Green Bay Packers ‘Golden Boy’ Paul Hornung has died at 84

Sad news today Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers legend Paul Hornung has died at the age of 84.

The only man to ever win Heisman Trophy on a team with a losing record has died as Paul Hornung, a football legend at both Notre Dame and with the Green Bay Packers passed away Friday at the age of 84.

Hornung starred as a three-sport athlete at Flaget High School in Louisville before attending Notre Dame on a football scholarship.

“The Golden Boy” as he was known during his playing days, threw for 12 touchdowns and 1696 yards during his time at Notre Dame.  In 1956 his efforts not only at quarterback but on defense and special teams helped him win the Heisman Trophy despite the Irish going just 2-8 on the year.  To this day Hornung is the only player to win the award while playing on a losing team.

Hornung would go on to be selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1985 and since 2010 The Paul Hornung Award has been given out to “The most versatile player in college football” each season.

Hornung graduated from Notre Dame in 1957 with a degree in business and became the first overall pick in the ’57 NFL Draft as the Green Bay Packers selected him.  Along with Vince Lombardi and the Packers dynasty of the sixties, Hornung would win four NFL Championships and twice be selected as a first-team All-Pro in what would end up a Hall of Fame career as he was enshrined in Canton in the 1986 class.

Hornung was a superstar in the sport but also found his way into various different controversies over the years.  He was involved in a betting ring alongside former Detroit Lions star Alex Karras that left the two suspended for the 1963 season.

In a 2004 radio interview Hornung also declared that Notre Dame  “can’t stay as strict as we are as far as the academic structure is concerned because we’ve got to get the black athletes. We must get the black athletes if we’re going to compete.”

Those comments understandably drew harsh criticism nationwide.

Hornung is survived by his wife of 41 years, Angela.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops but our thoughts are with all of those effected by the loss of a football legend.
