Woj: Champion Celtics alum Svi Mykhailiuk signs 4-year, $15m deal with Utah Jazz

Mykhailiuk has found himself a new ball club.

It seems that former Boston Celtics deep reserve shooting guard and small forward Svi Mykhailiuk has found himself a new ball club. A member of the 2024 title team, Mykhaliuk has turned his supporting role on that club into a new, multi-year deal with a new team.

Per ESPN senior writer Adrian Wojnarowski, “Mykhailiuk has agreed on a four-year, $15 million deal with the Utah Jazz … He played 41 games for the NBA champion … Celtics last season.” The Ukrainian swingman showed himself to be a great depth option for Boston in those 41 games, putting up 4.0 points, and 1.2 rebounds per game for the Celtics in 10.1 minutes of floor time.

Mykhailiuk shot 41.6% from the floor overall with Boston last season, 66.7% from the free throw line, and 38.9% from beyond the arc.

Former Thunder Al Horford, Celtics win championship with Game 5 win over Mavericks

Former Thunder Al Horford, Celtics win championship with Game 5 win over Mavericks.

The Boston Celtics clinched their 18th championship with a convincing 106-88 Game 5 win over the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals. It was a proper exclamation mark to a series they dominated.

Former Oklahoma City Thunder players Al Horford and Svi Mykhailiuk won their first career championships with the Celtics.

Horford had nine points on 3-of-6 shooting, nine rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes. He was a plus-21. The 38-year-old finally won a ring after a lengthy career and numerous postseason battles.

This caps off an impressive season for the Celtics, who were the best team all season and cruised to a championship with a 16-3 postseason record.

Former Thunder Al Horford, Celtics can’t sweep in 122-84 Game 4 loss to Mavericks

Former Thunder Al Horford, Celtics can’t sweep in 122-84 Game 4 loss to Mavericks.

The Boston Celtics will have to wait a few more days to potentially celebrate their 18th championship as a 122-84 Game 4 loss to the Dallas Mavericks eliminates a sweep in the 2024 NBA Finals.

Boston now only holds a 3-1 series lead following the 38-point loss. It won the first three contests to build an insurmountable 3-0 advantage.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder saw their season end in the second round against the Mavericks, that doesn’t mean they have no representation at the sport’s biggest stage. The Thunder have three former players spread across both squads.

Al Horford had the starting nod and finished with three points, three rebounds and four assists in 23 minutes before being pulled in the third quarter for the final time.

Svi Mykhailiuk had three points on 1-of-7 shooting and one rebounds in 10 minutes. Markieff Morris had three points on 1-of-5 shooting and four rebounds in 12 minutes.

The Celtics will get a chance for the gentlemen’s sweep at Boston on Monday, June 17.

Former Thunder Al Horford contributes to Celtics’ Game 1 win over Mavericks in NBA Finals

Former Thunder Al Horford contributes to Celtics’ Game 1 win over Mavericks in NBA Finals.

The 2024 NBA Finals kicked off on Thursday as the Boston Celtics collected a commanding 107-89 Game 1 win over the Dallas Mavericks to build a 1-0 series lead.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder saw their season end in the second round against the Mavericks, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t representation at the sport’s biggest stage. The Thunder have three former players spread across both squads.

Al Horford helped the Celtics as he drew the start with Kristaps Porzingis coming off the bench in his long-awaited return.

The 38-year-old finished with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 30 minutes. He shot 2-of-5 from 3 and was a plus-seven.

With the outcome decided, Svi Mykhailiuk saw playing time and scored two points in his three minutes of garbage time.

The Celtics will have a chance to take a 2-0 series lead when they host the Mavericks for Game 2 on Sunday, June 9.

Boston’s Svi Mykhailiuk on his career-high night vs. the Washington Wizards

To know Mykhailiuk is able to put up such scoring when his number is called is exactly the sort of data you want in a run at a title.

In a 132-122 win over the Washington Wizards in the Boston Celtics’ last game of the NBA’s 2023-24 season, reserve forward Svi Mykhailiuk had the game of his life at the NBA level, putting up a career-high 26 points, 5 rebounds, as many assists, and a block in 37 minutes of floor time.

The 26-year-old swingman opened up about his big game after the final buzzer sounded, speaking to Celtics team reporter Taylor Snow. “I just took what the game gave me,” explained Mykhailiuk. “I took some more shots, open shots, made some shots early. I feel like that gave me a little more confidence.”

“We knew we were going to have the opportunity to play a lot of minutes,” he added.

“Everybody came prepared, everybody was excited to get on the court and (have some more) playing time, and everybody wanted to win and finish the regular season on the right note and start preparing for the playoffs.”

And while it seems unlikely that the Cherkasy native will see the floor as much as he did vs. the Wiz, to know that Mykhailiuk is capable of putting up such scoring when his number is called is exactly the sort of data you want to have heading into a run at a title.

Celtics Lab 238: A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called.

And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season.

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell.

The self-proclaimed Boston bench beat reporter who has a bead on a certain crew that stays ready, join us in a deep dive into the Celtics’ reserves. (Apologies for variable audio, wifi issues made for a few bumps).

Can Dalano Banton or Svi Mykhailiuk carve out a role with the Boston Celtics?

The strong start to the season bodes well for the team’s aspirations, but can Mykhailiuk and Banton carve out a regular role?

The Boston Celtics secured a 117-107 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this week with strong performances from both the starters and the bench players. Al Horford, who started in place of injured Kristaps Porzingis, played a major role in the team’s second-half surge.

Jayson Tatum once again hit crucial shots late in the game, and Jrue Holiday impressed with his defensive skills and all-around contributions, including rebounding. The bench, led by Dalano Banton’s defense, made significant impacts on the game. The Celtics’ ability to rely on players who haven’t seen much playing time shows the strength and depth of their roster, with Svi Mykhaliuk even making an appearance.

The strong start to the season bodes well for the team’s aspirations, but can Mykhailiuk and Banton carve out a regular role?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast weighed in on that question on a recent episode; check it out above!

The Boston Celtics will have as many as nine free agents in 2024

Finding the right balance between players the front office ought to want to retain without also paying too much to do so is a fraught needle to thread.

The Boston Celtics are officially a second apron ball club as they gear up to contend for an NBA-record 18th title this season, and will thus need to take great care with the talent on the team around the margins with the Celtics needing to keep good players on cheap contracts around, which is no easy task even without the additional exigencies of trying to win a title.

Finding the right balance between players the front office ought to want to retain without also paying too much to do so is a fraught needle to thread for Boston moving forward, but one they will need to pull off if they want to stay in the title hunt.

And they will have to do it a total of as many as nine times in the 2024 NBA offseason, with as many potential free agents looking at new deals; let’s take a look at who they are.

Could Celtics’ Svi Mykhailiuk take minutes from Sam Hauser this season?

Hauser is likely to have some rope well into the regular season, but there’s a growing consensus that if Mykhailiuk continues to excel and Hauser keeps struggling, it could prompt coach Joe Mazzulla to contemplate change.

The Boston Celtics preseason game against the New York Knicks on Monday provided a tantalizing glimpse into the potential option for the team’s potential rotation. Svi Mykhailiuk, a relatively new addition to the Celtics, seized the opportunity to showcase his abilities in the tilt on a second game that forward Sam Hauser struggled, raising questions about the role of Hauser if it continues.

In this matchup, Mykhailiuk demonstrated his skill as a contributor off the bench. He put up 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist, showcasing his versatility and scoring ability. Hauser is likely to have some rope well into the regular season, but there’s a growing consensus that if Mykhailiuk continues to excel and Hauser keeps struggling, it could prompt coach Joe Mazzulla to contemplate change.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” took a long look at how that battle for playing time could play out.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say.

Boston’s bench players shine in 112-101 preseason win over 76ers

Boston leaned into their bench for the second straight preseason contest, and the second and third unit players stepped up with high-energy, connected play on both ends (at least, for preseason) to secure the win.

The Boston Celtics secured a 112-101 road exhibition victory in their preseason tilt against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night, improving their preseason record to 2-1. Notable absences included All-NBA forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown for the Celtics and star big man Joel Embiid and disgruntled guard James Harden for the 76ers.

Boston leaned into their bench for the second straight preseason contest, and the second and third unit players stepped up with high-energy, connected play on both ends (at least, for preseason) to secure the win. Payton Pritchard continues to rule the preseason, putting up 17 points for Boston, with Svi Mykhailiuk (15 points, 6 rebounds) and Neemias Queta (10 points, 2 assists) representing the bench mob well with limited run.

Sam Hauser (15 points, 3 assists) also shined on the starting unit, with likely usual starters Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White all scoring exactly 11 points apiece in 17 minutes of game time for all three.

The Celtics are now off until Tuesday, October 17 when they face the New York Knicks at TD Garden for their penultimate tilt of the NBA’s 2023 preseason.
