Newest Celtics wing Svi Mykhailiuk’s contract is partially guaranteed

Mykhailiuk’s deal is only guaranteed for $200,000 until opening night on Wed., Oct. 25.

Ukrainian forward Svi Mykhailiuk signed a one-year deal with the Boston Celtics, and Spotrac’s Keith Smith reports some interesting wrinkles to the former Charlotte Hornet’s new deal.

Per Smith, Mykhailiuk’s deal is only guaranteed for $200,000 until opening night on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

If the Cherkasy native sticks with the team beyond that, the partial guarantee jumps to $1.2 million. The deal becomes fully guaranteed on the league-wide date in January. The move comes as the Celtics had been working out wings TJ Warren, Glenn Robinson and Lamar Stevens in a bid to to bolster their depth.

This likely signals the end of that search. Recent reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach related the team may look to add frontcourt depth if they fill the team’s 15th roster spot (h/t Celtics Blog’s Mark Aboyoun).

How will the newest Boston Celtic, forward Svi Mykhailiuk, fit into the team’s rotation?

The Celtics have another long defender on the wing in Jordan Walsh as well as deep reserve floor general Dalano Banton, and a long-distance sharpshooter in forward Sam Hauser.

How will the newest Boston Celtic, forward Svi Mykhailiuk, fit into the club’s wing rotation with several players on the roster able to do some of the things the former Charlotte Hornets forward can do on both ends of the court? The Celtics have another long defender on the wing, Jordan Walsh. They have a deep reserve floor general, Dalano Banton, and a long-distance sharpshooter, forward Sam Hauser.

Forward Oshae Brissett joins Hauser as a 3/4 forward on the upper end of that spectrum, but with a defensive orientation as Walsh and Banton do. What sort of role can Mykhailiuk expect with Boston heading into the NBA’s 2023-24 campaign?

Evan Valenti, host of the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast linked up with a host of another CLNS Media pod — “How Bout Them Celtics!” host Jack Simone — to talk it over on a recent episode.

What does Svi Mykhailiuk bring to the Boston Celtics?

The hosts of the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast got together for a rapid reaction episode on what Mykhailiuk brings to Boston.

The Boston Celtics signed Svi Mykhailiuk to a one-year contract, a move  confirmed by Shams Charania and Michael Scotto.

Mykhailiuk, a 6-foot-7 small forward, played for the Charlotte Hornets last season, putting up impressive numbers, averaging 10.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

The Ukrainian forward shot 44% from the field and 40% from 3-point range. He is a sneaky-good ball mover and passer as well. This signing adds another shooter to the Celtics’ bench with the foot speed to play down a position and the size to play up when Boston goes small. The move raises questions about the status of other players the team has been tied to as potential signing targets, especially Blake Griffin.

To talk it over, the hosts of the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast met for a rapid reaction episode on what Mykhailiuk brings to Boston.

Report: Celtics sign veteran wing Svi Mykhailiuk to one-year deal

The Boston Celtics are reportedly signing Ukranian wing Svi Mykhailiuk to a one-year deal.

The Boston Celtics signed veteran wing Svi Mykhailiuk to a one-year deal, according to multiple reports.

Mykhailiuk spent last season with the New York Knicks and the Charlotte Hornets. Boston reportedly offered a deal to the Ukrainian-born Mykhailiuk in early August. With training camp rapidly approaching, the Celtics have been looking for ways to finalize the team’s depth chart.

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Mykhailiuk with the No. 47 draft pick in 2018. He spent four seasons at Kansas. During his senior year, Mykhailiuk set the Jayhawks’ record for most 3-pointers in a single season (115). Given Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla’s emphasis on 3-point shooting, this could be an important pickup. Standing 6-foot-7, Mykhailiuk will add size and athleticism to Boston’s wing rotation as well.

Mykhailiuk shot 40.4% from 3 last year with the Hornets on 4.7 attempts per game. He averaged 10.6 points and 2.7 assists in 22.5 minutes per night as well, including 8 starts for Charlotte in 19 games. Alongside Sam Hauser, Mazzulla has two players with good size who can also shoot the 3 well.
