Super Bowl halftime show review: Rihanna shined bright during a delightful no-guest performance

Rihanna was effortlessly cool during the Apple Music Halftime Show.

Rihanna was effortlessly cool during the Apple Music Halftime Show during Super Bowl 57 on Sunday.

She was tasked with following the excellent show from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem last season, which was no easy assignment.

There was quite a bit of anticipation leading up to the show from Rihanna, who hasn’t released a studio album since Anti in January 2016. It was her first performance since she joined DJ Khaled on stage at the Grammy Awards in 2018.

But she didn’t look like she missed a beat at all on (and floating above) the biggest stage in sports. As fireworks exploded behind her, Rihanna was able to captivate an audience at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona and those watching the game around the world.

Not only did she do a wonderful job with her song choices, but she managed to even sneak in a plug for her popular fashion brand Fenty while also fixing her makeup on stage.

Rihanna didn’t bring out any guests, which was maybe the biggest surprise of the night. While rocking an all-red outfit, Rihanna had an excellent medley of hit after hit.

Whether it was with her original music or her strong resumé of features, this was also an impressive reminder of how much Rihanna has accomplished in her musical career.

This might not go down as an all-time memorable halftime show and we likely didn’t get any particularly timeless memes that will be shared on our Twitter timelines.

But overall, it was a great break between the halves of an exciting game between the Chiefs and the Eagles.

Super Bowl 2023 halftime show: 10 guest stars Rihanna might bring out

There are so many names Rihanna could bring out for the Super Bowl. Here are the best ones

One of the most anticipated parts of the Super Bowl every year has nothing to do with the game at all.

Instead, it’s all about the halftime performance for so many people.

They get to see some of the most brilliant musical acts in the world put on a concert just for them from the comfort of their living rooms. That’s a pretty cool thing on its own, but it’s especially cool when you’ve got someone like Rihanna putting on a show this year.

The beauty mogul is giving the halftime performance this year and it should be spectacular. But the question is who is she bringing out with her? We’ve got a few guesses.

Here are 10 names we might see step on the stage with Rih for halftime at the Super Bowl. We’ll also include some betting odds via FanDuel.

Every Super Bowl halftime show performer since the first one in 1967

A look at every Super Bowl halftime show performer from the last 50+ years.

There’s a little something for everyone when it comes to the Super Bowl. Some are there for the obvious reason: football. But plenty of other people tune in just to watch the very expensive ads, while others are hanging out for the halftime show.

The Super Bowl halftime show is a very big deal for a mini concert that most people watching are, in fact, watching from afar. With superstar artists often headlining the shows, fans are treated to fun performances (though there have been some not great ones as well), plus the nearly guaranteed memes and jokes that follow.

So ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl where Rihanna will perform the halftime show, here’s a look at every Super Bowl halftime show performer since the first one in 1967 (per The Washington Post, CBS Sports, and Rolling Stone).

Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling has hilarious hopes to catch Rihanna during Super Bowl halftime show

Well, can you blame him?

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling might have alternative plans for halftime during Super Bowl 57.

While he’ll most likely be with his Kansas City teammates preparing for the second half, Valdes-Scantling shared on Twitter that he might see if he can catch some of the halftime show performance from Rihanna.

It’s undoubtedly one of the more relatable hopes that any NFL player would have if they made the Super Bowl, especially when the performer is someone as universally beloved as Rihanna.

Going to the Super Bowl is, of course, a dream for all NFL players, but it’s also a free ticket to catch one of the biggest musical performances of the year. You can’t blame a guy for seeing if he can make both work.

If you’ll recall, Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson stayed on the field last year to watch the Super Bowl halftime show. Will Valdes-Scantling follow his lead?

If the Chiefs are up 250-0 by halftime, we bet Andy Reid will let a couple of his guys stay out there to take in the music.

If not, we’re guessing a player as integral to the offense as Valdes-Scantling is will be around for the halftime adjustments. There’s always the replay!

Taylor Swift fans are convinced she’s playing the Super Bowl Halftime Show and they might be right

Is Taylor Swift going to play the Super Bowl Halftime Show? Lots of fans think so.

WAKE UP, AMERICA — AND YES, I KNOW THAT’S AN AGGRESSIVE WAY TO SAY HELLO, BUT THEM’S THE BREAKS BECAUSE WE. HAVE. TO. TALK.

*deep breath*

Twitter lit up early Friday morning when the NFL announced some pretty significant Super Bowl news at the stroke of midnight: They’ve signed a multi-year halftime show sponsorship deal with Apple Music months after ending their deal with Pepsi. (By now you’re asking, “Is THIS why you’re screaming at me right now? Because Apple’s going to be taking over yet another thing? Get lost, CORPORATE SHILL.”)

STAY WITH ME, THANKS.

The announcement’s significance goes way, way beyond the news itself — or at least, we’re pretty sure it might but have no actual confirmation and are making that very clear early on. Because the thing is MANY believe this was a clever way to let the world know what’s really going on here: Taylor Swift might be playing the SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW.

First, the evidence:

The NFL dropped a major press release at midnight.

Any Taylor Swift fan worth their weight in cozy fall sweaters knows midnight is when this girl goes to WORK. She dropped two surprise albums at midnight during the pandemic, the word “midnight” appears approximately 2,000 times in her extensive song catalogue, AND she’s releasing a brand-new album Oct. 21 titled — you guessed it — Midnights.

Any media professional worth their weight in awkwardly worded pitch emails knows dropping big news in the middle of the night would be a weird move for most organizations considering your target audience — the press — is probably asleep (unless you’re me, but I waited six hours to write this because work-life boundaries!)

But midnight is the golden hour for Taylor Swift fans. That’s when we come alive, like vampires if vampires could sustain their existence with relationship trauma, profound emotional growth and eternal spite toward Jake Gyllenhaal.

Taylor’s never performed during a Super Bowl Halftime Show due to her contract with Coke barring her from even LOOKING at a Pepsi.

OK, that’s an exaggeration …probably… but Swifties have spent years wishing Taylor could have the opportunity to play the halftime show and it was unlikely to happen as long as Pepsi was the sponsor.

BUT THEN.

Taylor’s been teasing the track titles of Midnights since the announcement and at the same time the Apple Music news dropped, she announced Track 8: “Vigilante Sh*t”.

OK, I’m admittedly not as skilled at Taylor Swift clue-deciphering as many of her fans, so I can’t actually say this hints at anything resembling confirmation. HOWEVER, it’s pretty smart to drop Taylor Swift speculation at a time when her massive fan base is Very Online waiting for another clue about the new album. It’s also just a great name for a song. (But we’ll need the clean version for the Super Bowl, Tay.)

You might think some of this is a reach, and who knows?! It could be! But I’m not the only one connecting the dots here, and therefore you can’t get mad at me if this theory turns out to be wrong.

Super Bowl 56 Halftime Show a powerhouse production and performance

The Super Bowl LVI halftime show hit all the right notes.

The Super Bowl 56 halftime show brought together the legends of rap and hip-hop on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem delivered a huge performance on the biggest sports stage.

Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg kicked off the halftime show.

They were followed by 50 Cent.

Then Mary J. Blige took the stage and dazzled. Kendrick Lamar appeared in a series of boxes that read Dre Day.

Dancers had sashes that also read Dre Day in green lettering.

And then, Eminem made an explosive entrance.

Eminem performed and Dr. Dre headed over to the piano, as the show brought Snoop Dogg pack into the performance.

Dr. Dre and Snoop then performed together.

All the performers joined together on the stunning stage.

How impressive was the lineup? Bengals rookie kicker remained on the sideline during the performance to take in all the highlights.

Super Bowl halftime show review: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar had a show-stopping homecoming

That was one of my favorite Super Bowl halftime shows ever.

For a Super Bowl halftime performance in Los Angeles, it was only fitting for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar to dominate the stage.

This was a show designed for television, and it told an incredibly compelling story for those who were tuning in.

With this performance, Dr. Dre flexed his influence on not only the city of Los Angeles but also on music as a whole. He played an instrumental role in bringing many of these artists into our life, helping to not only discover their talent but to popularize them as well.

It was such a nice reminder that after all these years, Andre Young is Still D.R.E. and we never should have forgotten about Dre. It’s Dre’s world and we are just living in it.

50 Cent paid homage to an old MTV video with his surprise performance for the Super Bowl Halftime Show

What. A. Halftime show.

This was one of the most fun Super Bowl halftime performances I can remember.

First of all, anytime you get Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar on the same stage it’s going to be an incredible show. Oh, and Eminem, too.

But the show immediately took a left turn when 50 Cent seemingly popped up out of nowhere to perform “In Da Club” as part of the Super Bowl’s first-ever hip-hop halftime show.

And it wasn’t even that he just appeared, y’all. This man appeared on the ceiling of a room like he was in the original video. It was absolutely bonkers. What an entrance.

In the OG G-Unit tank top, too?!? Nah, take me back to 2003 fam. This was excellent. Fans were so hype. They said my guy came in like Spider-Man.
