Sooners add former Louisiana pitcher Sam Landry via transfer portal

Patty Gasso continues to add to the Oklahoma Sooners roster in the transfer portal.

The Oklahoma Sooners softball team added their newest member via the [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag] on Saturday. The second pitcher to join the team this offseason is officially in the boat.

[autotag]Patty Gasso[/autotag] and the four-time defending champions got a commitment from former Louisiana pitcher Sam Landry. The three-time all-[autotag]Sun Belt[/autotag] honoree announced her decision on social media.

In her career, she’s posted a 2.12 ERA with 63 wins and 460 strikeouts in 460 innings pitched. She entered the transfer portal on June 27.

Landry was an All-Sun Belt first-team selection, Sun Belt Championship All-tournament honoree, and an All-Louisiana first-team selection. She finished top 10 in victories last season with a career-best 24 wins. She led the Ragin’ Cajun pitching staff with 165 strikeouts, and held her opponents to a .219 batting average over 46 appearances and 28 starts.

Landry and fellow transfer [autotag]Isabella Smith[/autotag] will arrive to help the Sooners pitching staff, which includes [autotag]Kierston Deal[/autotag], [autotag]Patyn Monticelli[/autotag] and freshman [autotag]Audrey Lowry[/autotag]. Deal is the most experienced returner the Sooners have on the roster. The Sooners are still awaiting the decision of Player of the Year NiJaree Canady.

Landry is the fifth player Gasso, and the staff has acquired via the portal since winning the national championship last month.

Former Arkansas State right-handed pitcher transfers to Notre Dame

Best of luck to the newest member of the Irish.

Starting right-handed pitcher [autotag]Dylan Heine[/autotag] has decided he’s not done with college baseball. In an announcement on social media, Heine, who entered the transfer portal only a week earlier because of a coaching change at Arkansas State, said he’s taking his talents to Notre Dame:

Heine, who pitched one season with the Red Wolves after three seasons at Rider, is coming off a year in which he went 2-2 with a 4.65 ERA in 62 innings over 14 starts. He struck out 30 batters while walking 26.

That showing would have been acceptable with the 2024 Irish, who had a team ERA of 5.89. Their two main starters, [autotag]Jack Radel[/autotag] and [autotag]Matt Bedford[/autotag], had respective ERAs of 4.58 and 4.65. They combined to go 7-9.

During his collegiate career, Heine has accumulated an 8-9 record to go with a 4.77 ERA. However, he’s coming off a season in which he led the Sun Belt and tied for sixth nationally with 21 hit batters, nearly tripling the number he had at Rider. [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag] and his staff will have their work cut out for them in that area.

Auburn checks in at No. 32 on ESPN’s Week 1 FPI Index

Auburn should improve in its first year under Hugh Freeze, and ESPN seems to agree.

Last season could not have been much more of a disaster for the Auburn Tigers. The team finished 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the SEC, losing more games than they won for the second season in a row under head coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag].

Still, there is reason to be optimistic as a Tigers fan this year with new head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] and his band of transfers leading the charge. ESPN seems to share that optimism, at least for now, as they ranked Auburn just outside of the top 25 teams in the nation according to their College Football Power Index (FPI).

The FPI ranks each college football team by a variety of factors; Strength of record, strength of schedule, offensive efficiency, defensive efficiency, and overall efficiency.

At 5-foot-10 and just 150 pounds, Johnson should be able to play all around the field and in a number of formations to make it difficult enough for the defense to keep track of.

It’s likely he’ll bulk up some in the Oregon weight room, but fans should think of players such as De’Anthony Thomas, James Rodgers or even (old school) Samie Parker when comparing Johnson.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year

QB Grayson McCall, Jr. Coastal Carolina

The star in the emergence of Coastal Carolina football, McCall has been one of the nation’s most efficient and effective passers over the last two seasons hitting 71% of his throws for close to 5.400 yards with 53 touchdowns and six picks.

He’s able to run – 870 yards and 11 career touchdowns – hit the deep ball, and get the high-octane attack rolling at will. Coastal Carolina has some rebuilding to do, but McCall will make everyone around him better.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year

LB Carlton Martial, Sr. Troy

The newly configured Sun Belt is loaded with do-it-all linebackers, but no one does-it-all more more than Martial. He’s not all that big, but the 5-9, 210-pound flash gets all over the field as a bit of a hybrid playmaker.

Going into his fifth season, he already has 443 tackles, ten sacks, 47.5 tackles for loss, and five picks with seven forced fumbles on the resumé.

Where does the Big Ten stand nationally in comparison to all other conferences in ESPN’s final SP+ preseason projections?

The Big Ten is generally regarded as one of the nation’s premier conferences. It makes perfect sense, too. In addition to boasting some of the country’s top brands, the actual football being played on the gridiron is pretty dang good as well.

In fact, ESPN’s final SP+ preseason projections rank five Big Ten teams inside the nation’s top 17 and eight teams inside the country’s top 34. Iowa checks in No. 27 nationally according to the final SP+ ratings. Suffice it to say, the predictive model expects the league to feature plenty of the nation’s top teams once more in 2022.

On the surface, those numbers sound great for the Big Ten. How does the Big Ten stack up nationally, though? Where do all of the conferences rank according to Bill Connelly’s final SP+ preseason projections?

FCS powerhouse James Madison gets to join in right away, and Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were able to leave Conference USA and get in for the 2022 football season.

Here’s the problem – several Sun Belt programs that made strides last year are going to have tougher schedules to deal with. Several teams should be better, but might not have the results to show it.

The conference has only been doing football since 2001, and it was always the land of the paycheck programs – the ones the big boys scheduled for an easy 55-3 win on Homecoming.

In one of the shockers of the conference realignment changes over the last year, the Sun Belt wasn’t picked off in the expansion run. Instead, it added James Madison from the FCS and snagged Marshall, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion from Conference USA.

It was a battle to see if Conference USA could hold on to the Thundering Herd, the Golden Eagles, and the Monarchs through the football season, but the divorce is final, and those three are getting remarried right away to go along with a fun James Madison program.

How ugly did it get? Both Conference USA and the Sun Belt released their 2022 schedules including those three teams, but the Sun Belt has their teams.

The Sun Belt East will be made up of Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion. The West will be Arkansas State, Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy, and ULM.

No, it’s not time for the SEC to start shaking, but it’s an amazing story that the Sun Belt is not only surviving, but it’s getting a whole lot stronger and more entertaining.

No waiting period. No passing go. They’re in, they’re about to play an adult table schedule, and the fan base is eating up every step of the process.
