Giants waive DB Steven Parker

The New York Giants have waived DB Steven Parker and terminated the practice squad contract of WR Travis Toivonen.

The New York Giants did some minor roster shuffling on Tuesday, waiving defensive back Steven Parker.

Parker, who had been signed to practice squad in late September, was added to the 53-man roster ahead of a Week 8 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He made his Giants’ debut on Monday night and saw 12 special teams snaps.

An undrafted rookie in 2018, Parker had spent time with the Los Angeles Rams (2018), Miami Dolphins (2019), Minnesota Vikings (2020) and Dallas Cowboys (2020). During his time in Miami, Parker played under current Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

In addition to waiving Parker, the Giants also terminated the practice squad contract of wide receiver Travis Toivonen, who had been added in late October.

With an extra spot open on their 53-man roster, do not be surprised to see rookie edge rusher Elerson Smith activated from the physically unable to perform list.

Finally, the Giants have re-signed wide receiver Alex Bachman to their practice squad.

Giants activate four, place Carter Coughlin on injured reserve

The New York Giants have activated four players and placed LB Carter Coughlin on IR ahead of a Week 8 game against the Chiefs.

The New York Giants did some serious tinkering to their roster ahead of a Monday night game against the Kansas City Chiefs, including the elevation of four players.

Linebackers Trent Harris and Benardrick McKinney were each elevated from the practice squad to the gameday roster. Both will be returned to the reserve unit following the game.

Additionally, defensive back Steven Parker was signed from the practice squad to the active roster, while rookie cornerback Aaron Robinson was activated from the physically unable to perform list.

“He’s got real good top-end speed,” head coach Joe Judge said of Robinson last week. “He’s got very good short-area quickness. He has good instincts in terms of matching receivers. He has very good ball skills. He’s got a physical presence to him. That’s one of the things that really jumped out to us when we looked at this guy through college tape and down in Mobile (at the Senior Bowl).

“He’s a physical corner, he really is. Physicality comes into how you tackle but then also how you can play on the line of scrimmage with hands and really go ahead and be disruptive. He does a good job of that. He’s one of those guys when you watch him from across the ball, he doesn’t blink much pre-snap. He’s always looking into it, he’s anticipating moves. Physically, this guy’s got a pretty good skillset.”

Rookie edge rusher Elerson Smith was not activated and remains on PUP.

Finally, second-year linebacker Carter Coughlin was placed on injured reserve with an ankle issue. He is eligible to return on November 28 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Following the series of transactions, the Giants are now at the league’s 53-man limit (plus practice squad elevations).

Giants sign Ka’dar Hollman to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed former Green Bay Packers sixth-round pick, DB Ka’dar Hollman, to their practice squad.

The New York Giants continued tinkering with their practice squad on Tuesday, shuffling a few players around before the team returns to East Rutherford on Wednesday.

The latest addition comes by way of defensive back Ka’dar Hollman, who had spent part of this season with the New Orleans Saints.

The 27-year-old Hollman was a sixth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in the 2019 NFL draft. After two seasons up in Lambeau, he was traded to the Houston Texans (for a seventh-round pick) in August. He was waived eight days later and went on to spend three weeks on the Saints’ practice squad.

In 18 career games (one start), the 6-foot, 196-pound Hollman has recorded 10 tackles and three passes defensed.

In order to clear room for Hollman on the practice squad, the Giants have released safety Steven Parker.

The New York Giants have officially placed offensive lineman Nick Gates on injured reserve, effectively ending his season after suffering a broken tibia and fibula in Week 2.

“Nick’s a key figure for us, he really is. He’s a guy that the entire time we’ve been here he’s been a team-first guy, he’s been an all-in guy, he’s a guy that comes to work every day with a great amount of energy and enthusiasm. We’re still going to rely on him to do that,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters on Monday.

“As he gets better and comes through his healing process, we want to keep him as involved with the team as possible. This guy was voted captain by his teammates for a reason and that’s for leadership. This guy has done a lot of unselfish things and I believe he’ll continue to have an impact on the team.”

Meanwhile, the Giants also did some further shuffling to their practice squad.

The contract of tight end Larry Izzo, who was signed earlier this year, has been terminated. Filling his spot is defensive back Steven Parker, who was officially signed on Tuesday.

An undrafted rookie in 2018, Parker has spent time with the Los Angeles Rams (2018), Miami Dolphins (2019), Minnesota Vikings (2020) and Dallas Cowboys (2020). During his time in Miami, Parker played under current Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

In 22 career games (four starts), Parker has recorded 28 tackles (20 solo), three passes defensed and two interceptions.

Finally, the Giants also lost offensive lineman Jackson Barton, who was signed off of the Giants’ practice squad to the Las Vegas Raiders’ active roster.

Former Giants notes:

  • The Green Bay Packers have signed R.J. McIntosh to their practice squad.
  • The Cleveland Browns have signed Ifeadi Odenigbo from their practice squad to the active roster.

Three former Sooners to be a featured on HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks’

Three former Sooners to be featured on cable television staple ‘Hard Knocks’

HBO and NFL films announced that the Dallas Cowboys will be featured for the third time on “Hard Knocks.” This will be the show’s 20th anniversary season. The five-episode season will begin on Aug. 10 at 10 p.m. ET. after the team’s trip to Canton, Ohio to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Hall of Fame game. The annual cable television staple provides a look at an NFL training camp and roster evaluations/cut-down to 53 for the regular season.

America’s Team was also on the show’s training camp documentary series in 2002 and 2008. The Cowboys present a unique cast in 2021. Last year, Dallas went 6-10 in Mike McCarthy’s first year as head coach and this season will provide behind-the-scenes introspective on how the team bounces back under his leadership and created culture. The season will also shed light on first-year defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn, and his newly implemented scheme. He will strive to maximize the talent on defense and turn around a unit that hit record-setting lows last season as the 31st ranked run defense.

Dak Prescott’s return from injury will be a main storyline as he writes his comeback story on the turf. Three former Sooners will likely make an appearance as well. In Prescott’s talented supporting cast, CeeDee Lamb is poised to make a leap in Year 2 following a stellar rookie campaign. His acrobatic catches turned heads a year ago and on defense, defensive tackle Neville Gallimore and safety Steven Parker will be looking to leave their mark in Quinn’s defense. Gallimore became a starter midway through the 2020 season and impressed in the interior bulldozing ball carriers. He made plays on the ball and became a bright spot on a squad that desperately needed a boost.

Many big-name players provide intrigue as position battles take form. One to watch will be in the secondary. With the acquisition of Jayron Kearse and Damontae Kazee in free agency paired with Israel Mukuamu in the draft, this will be a group to watch.  They will join Donovan Wilson, Reggie Robinson II, Darian Thompson, and Steven Parker in the club’s last line of defense. The new coaching regime is not married to players and training camp will provide insight on predominant starters in the lineup come fall.

Cowboys move Zack Martin to IR, possibly ending his season

The six-time Pro Bowler will miss three games, but the calf injury may bring his 2020 campaign to an early close, given the team’s record.

At this point in the team’s thoroughly disappointing 3-8 season, Cowboys fans are basically just waiting for the rest of the shoes to drop. A big one may have just landed with a resounding thud on Monday.

The team has placed guard Zack Martin on the Reserve/Injured list after a calf injury caused him to exit the Thanksgiving Day game versus Washington in the first quarter. He and tackle Cam Erving had already been declared out of the Week 13 contest.

Per league rules, Martin must now sit out three games. That would technically allow the four-time All-Pro to return for Week 16’s matchup with Philadelphia. If Dallas has been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention by then, though, one has to wonder if the coaching staff would even bother to let him back on the field for the club’s final two games of 2020.

Safety Steven Parker has also been placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Tuesday’s date with Baltimore will mark just the fourth missed start of Martin’s stellar seven-year career. Because of other injuries along the Cowboys’ offensive line, the former first-round draft pick started the past two games at right tackle after six seasons of being considered one of the NFL’s top guards. That position shift, a dreadful season from the team, and now missed games will no doubt put Martin’s remarkable string of Pro Bowl nods in jeopardy.

Brandon Knight, Connor Williams, Joe Looney, Connor McGovern, and Terence Steele will likely comprise the Cowboys front line when they host the Ravens. It will be the eighth different personnel combination along the offensive line this season.

Cowboys rookie Reggie Robinson might finally be activated vs Ravens

The Cowboys have iced Reggie Robinson all 11 games this season. They may not have a choice but to thaw him out. We look at the rook.

Whether it be process of elimination or not, it appears that Tuesday’s Week 13 tilt against the Baltimore Ravens will afford one rookie his best chance to see the field in 2020. Dallas Cowboys’ fourth-round defensive back Reggie Robinson was drafted out of Tulsa as a cornerback, but was shifted to safety by the coaching staff.

It was a starting move for many fans, as it came equipped with an edict that the defensive back staff didn’t see much difference between corner and safety. Regardless, the move led Robinson to the back of the line as there were no preseason games for him to acclimate to the single-high responsibilities now thrust on him. Week after week of the regular season has come and gone, and despite the Dallas defense being putrid more often than not, Robinson hasn’t been active. That might change this week.

The Cowboys are hurting at safety; really hurting. After jettisoning Ha Ha Clinton-Dix – their prize offseason signing in the secondary – during training camp, Darian Thompson took over the starting role at free safety. That was short-lived as Thompson was regularly made to look bad by opponents. In came 2019 sixth-round pick Donovan Wilson.

Wilson was a strong safety which meant Xavier Woods, formerly a free safety, moved back to his position from the previous three seasons. The problem is that now Wilson is hurting, suffering a groin injury in Thanksgiving’s game against Washington and missing practice this week.

With all of the shuffling, including Thompson’s demotion, there’s been a plethora of injuries at cornerback. Still, Dallas has refused to move Robinson back. Anthony Brown has been out for two spells with rib issues. Chidobe Awuzie missed two months with a bad hamstring. Rookie Trevon Diggs is currently out with a foot injury.

Still, no Robinson. In fact, a player Dallas signed to their practice squad in Week 2, Steven Parker, has seen plenty of snaps as Dallas has gone to a three-safety look often over the last several games.

Parker’s injured, too, and is questionable for Tuesday’s game along with Brown and Wilson.

This all may lead to the first chance Robinson has to prove what he can do on the NFL field.

Selected No. 123 in the draft, Robinson is an outstanding athlete who had perhaps one of the biggest jumps in college play of any prospect in 2019. His pro potential was masked, but a dynamic final season saw him lead the AAC in pass defenses (13) and he was named first-team All-Conference. He recorded 38 total tackles, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries,

Also on his resume are four blocked kicks on special teams, which could be key because that may be the way he gets onto Tuesday’s active roster.

Robinson is 6-foot-1, weighs 205 pounds and runs a 4.44 forty-yard dash. He also bench pressed 22 times at the combine. His one athletic shortcoming is his 3-cone shuttle time, which may have been the reason Dallas wanted to try him as a center field defender.

With so many secondary players headed towards free agency in 2021, it would seem logical Dallas’ staff wants to collect as much information on their 2020 draft class as possible over these last five games. Of course, we’ve been saying that over the prior four games as well. Dallas still having a chance to win the NFC East seems to be preventing them from making roster decisions that would give themselves intel on who might be ready for a bigger role in 2021.

Several players, including Wilson, Neville Gallimore and Tyler Biadasz were held back, but showed their worth when given the chance. If the injuries create space for him on Tuesday, perhaps Robinson will join that group as well.

Saturday’s ‘Thursday’ Injury Report: Cowboys rule out Zack Martin, Ravens on mend

The latest injury updates for the Cowboys and Ravens ahead of their game this Tuesday.

No team has dealt with more complications from COVID-19 this season than the Baltimore Ravens. The Cowboys were originally scheduled to face the Ravens on Thursday Night Football, but the game was pushed back to Tuesday, allowing Baltimore to return a number of key contributors, including Lamar Jackson who is expected to suit up.

Saturday, DE Aldon Smith returned to practice and CB Anthony Brown was able to get in another practice. Offensive linemen Zack Martin and Cam Erving, S Steven Parker were non-participants, and S Donovan Wilson worked with athletic trainers off to the side at practice.

Smith (illness) had missed practices earlier in the week but was back in the action this weekend, and is game status is not in jeopardy.

Brown (ribs) missed Dallas’ Thanksgiving game against Washington, but the added rest has helped his recovery and he is questionable for Tuesday’s matchup.

The Dallas offensive line has struggled to continuity, and that trend will continue this week. Martin and Erving were the Cowboys starting tackles against Washington, but both were injured in the first quarter. Martin (calf) and Erving (knee) didn’t practice this week, and they are officially out

Wilson (groin) missed practice Friday, but worked on the side with trainers Saturday; his status is still in question for Tuesday Wilson had emerged as a bright spot in the Cowboys safety room over the last few weeks.

One of Wilson’s potential replacements, Parker (ankle), was absent from practice Saturday, leaving Dallas incredibly thin at the safety position if Parker can’t play. Both Wilson and Parker are listed as questionable, and Darian Thompson would be the likely beneficiary should Dallas be without Wilson or Parker.

Dallas’ upcoming opponent, Baltimore was hit with a whirlwind of COVID cases and injuries over the last two weeks, but a handful of the Ravens’ best players are set to return from the reserve list and face the Cowboys Tuesday.

On Friday and Saturday Baltimore activated a total of seven players from the COVID/Reserve list, including DT Calais Campbell, RB Mark Ingram, RB J.K. Dobbins, OLB Pernell McPhee, OL Matt Skura, OL Patrick Mekari, DE Jihad Ward.

Reigning MVP, QB Lamar Jackson, is eligible to be activated from the list on Sunday, and while Baltimore won’t confirm that as their plan, it is expected.

Despite te positive activations from the COVID list, Baltimore still has nine players with a questionable tag, and two listed as doubtful as we get closer to Tuesday.

The most notable questionable tags include Campbell, who was mentioned above, CB Jimmy Smith, DT Brandon Williams, and S Chuck Clark.

It will be important to monitor the Baltimore health situation before the Tuesday night showdown, especially at quarterback.

Zack Martin ruled out with leg injury, Cowboys lose LT, safety too

The Dallas Cowboys suffer two injuries early in the game against the Washington Football Team.

It’s a new day but the same old song is playing. Midway through the second drive of the game and it appears as if the Dallas Cowboys will be down three players, including their best player in offensive lineman Zack Martin. Martin has already been ruled out from returning for the contest.

After a three-and-out delivered by the defense, courtesy of plays made by Leighton Vander Esch and Randy Gregory, backup safety Steven Parker was hurt on the kick return. Six plays later, left tackle Cam Erving stayed down after Andy Dalton picked up a third down on the ground.

A few plays after that, Dallas failed to convert a 3rd-and-5 from the 15 and on the play Martin went down, grabbing his left knee.

Martin had to be helped to the locker room in obvious pain. He was replaced on the field goal attempt by Adam Redmond, who was meant to be the backup center on Thursday.

The word has been mum on Parker but word from the broadcast was that he was able to walk off the field under his own power. Erving could not and received assistance getting to the locker room. He has been designated questionable to return. His replacement will be the man he replaced due to injury, Brandon Knight.

This will be Knight’s first action along the offensive line (non special-teams division) since Week 6. Erving had spent the previous four games filling in in his absence.

Cowboys signing practice squad safety to 53-man roster

The Dallas Cowboys are elevating Steven Parker to the 53-man roster.

The Dallas Cowboys safety situation has been, like much of the team in 2020, a dumpster fire. It’s a position that the front office obviously doesn’t believe needs any resources and can rely on a hodge-podge group of players to fill and hopefully get replacement level play out of them.

Steven Parker is the next man up. After being called up from the practice squad in two consecutive weeks, the powers that be decided to make a more formal move, promoting him to the roster full time after appearing in the last two games.

Parker spent the entirety of 2019 with the Miami Dolphins and he’ll be fighting for playing time with Donovan Wilson and Darian Thompson, neither of whom have managed to distinguish themselves on the back end. His two career interceptions, neither with the Cowboys of course, are more than Wilson and Thompson combined.

On the bright side, this might be a sign that head coach Mike McCarthy isn’t satisfied with a position that the Jones family has been somehow happy with for a long time. In the off-season he brought in former charge HaHa Clinton-Dix, who performed so badly in camp he was cut. He benched the aforementioned Thompson one drive into Week 4.

Xavier Woods led Cowboys safeties in Week 6 snaps with 62 (100%) while Wilson had 54. Parker and Thompson each had eight defensive snaps.

McCarthy might finally be the man who forces the hand that feeds him to nab him a safety who can actually make plays on the back end. Here’s to wishful thinking.
