How Stetson Bennett and George Pickens matchup against Vols’ split safety coverage

How Stetson Bennett and George Pickens matchup against Vols’ split safety coverage.

Stetson Bennett has emerged as the starting quarterback for Georgia.

His journey in becoming the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback has been one of leaving Georgia and returning.

Bennett redshirted in 2017 at Georgia and then transferred to Jones County Junior College.

He returned to Georgia and has since became the starting signal-caller under first-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Todd Monken, who specializes in Air Raid principles.

During Bennett’s time at Jones County Junior College he played for assistant Brian Hudson.

Hudson previously worked under Monken at Oklahoma State (offensive quality control) in 2011-12, and Southern Miss (graduate assistant) from 2013-14, working primarily with quarterbacks.

Ahead of Bennett’s matchup with No. 12 Tennessee, Hudson discussed his former quarterback’s success so far this season.

“Stetson is everything you want in a quarterback,” Hudson told Vols Wire.  “He is a great competitor and extremely smart. He can make all the throws in the offense and moves great in the pocket.”

Bennett will face Jeremy Pruitt and his split safety coverage look Saturday.

Monken will create an interesting matchup between his Air Raid offense and Pruitt’s predominantly split safety coverage defensive scheme, whether it be Cover-4, Cover-2, or any variation.

A way to attack this scheme is through vertical passing attempts and post routes — two areas that give Pruitt’s split safety coverage looks in CONNIE calls a difficult time to defend.

“I worked for Coach Monken both at Oklahoma State and Southern Miss as his graduate assistant,” Hudson said. “He is the smartest offensive coach I have been around. He always had a great offensive game-plan each week.”

During Bennett’s time at Jones County Junior College, they ran a similar offensive system that he is playing in at Georgia under Monken currently — one that adds Air Raid principles with pro-style concepts.

Noticeable Air Raid concepts last week against Auburn, Georgia ran Y-Cross off play-action and mesh on third down.

“We ran a very similar system here at Jones like we did at Southern Miss and Oklahoma State, just dialed it back a tad,” Hudson said.

In Georgia’s offense, Bennett has George Pickens as his X-wide receiver. If Tennessee cannot cover Pickens in man coverage, it will cause the Vols’ defense to rely on communication throughout the split safety scheme.

“Coach Monken will have a good plan going in for his guys to succeed, plus he will always be ready for those half-time adjustments that the defense will throw at him,” Hudson said. “It’s always nice having a weapon like Pickens on the outside. It’s all about finding a way to have explosive plays on the outside.”

CONNIE within the split safety scheme

The CONNIE role stems off CONE. CONE is the ability to take the X-receiver out of the game.

If the defense is playing an offense in which they cannot defend a wide receiver in man coverage, then the defense has to do something.

The cornerback lines up slightly in outside leverage on the X-receiver. If the X-receiver takes an outside release, the cornerback can then defend the X-receiver in man coverage.

If the X-receiver goes inside, then the cornerback and free safety will double-team the X-receiver.

CONNIE protects the inside linebacker as he has the running back unless the X-receiver comes inside and is short. If a CONNIE call is made, the cornerback will get off 4-5 yards and will not be in press coverage. The cornerback needs to be able to see the X-receiver going inside and short, becoming responsible for covering the running back. If the X-receiver goes vertical, then a CONE is still on the receiver.

Communication is critical between the inside linebacker and the defensive backfield, and with the defensive backfield and the inside linebacker, as they work together in CONE turning into CONNIE.

An SEC quarterback is compared to Notre Dame’s Book, is it warranted?

ESPN got a nugget from an SEC assistant, as they compared a new starter to Notre Dame’s Ian Book. It the comparison justified?

As this weird season continues, the data for new starting quarterback is finally coming to fruition. Adam Rittenberg of ESPN looked at 5 of the newest starters and obviously Notre Dame doesn’t have one. There was however, a comparison to the Irish starting signal caller Ian Book.

Georgia didn’t start Stetson Bennett in their opener, the nod went to D’Wan Mathis, but Bennett did finish the game and started this past week even with the USC transfer JT Daniels being medically cleared to play. It looks like it’s Bennett’s job to lose at this moment and Rittenberg found that an SEC assistant compared the Bulldogs new starter to Notre Dame’s Book.

Is this a warranted comparison? Both are similar size at around 6-feet tall, Book has a slight weight advantage. The diminutive starters rely on a high completion percentage, Bennett sporting a 64.9% this year, while Book had 73.1% in his first two starts. Each of them had a win over an opponent ranked No. 7 in their second game, Book over Stanford and Bennett over Auburn.

Book had a 6-to-0 TD to INT ratio, while Bennett posted 3-to-0. Book had an advantage in yardage as well, throwing for 603 yards in his first two games, Bennet just 451. Bennett does have two less quarter of work, but the advantage goes to Book.

Book’s passer rating was also better than Bennett’s during their first two games of extended action, 178.4 to 148.7. There is an area where Bennett does statistically beat Book, it’s in adjusted quarterback ranking. Bennett sports a very impressive 94.4, Book after two starts was 79.3.

At this point, it seems like the SEC assistant was quick to the gun in the comparison between Book and Bennett. What is interesting though was a comment made by Kirk Herbstreit and David Pollack, a former Bulldog. They both said in their CFB Podcast yesterday that Bennett led the offense better than previous starter Jake Fromm, who was a fifth-round pick in last years NFL Draft.

The literal book is still out on Bennett, while we know exactly what the Irish get every week with Book. It’s an interesting comparison, although, it might be a little too early to anoint Bennett as Georgia’s savior. Fromm did lead the Bulldogs to a spot in the College Football Playoff finals, If it wasn’t for Tua Tagovailoa’s heroics, Fromm’s squad probably would have defeated mighty Alabama for the crown. It’s a bit too early to make any comparisons right now.

Former Georgia WR JJ Holloman shares awesome DM he got from Stetson Bennett in 2016

Former Georgia football WR Jeremiah Holloman shared a really cool DM he got from UGA QB Stetson Bennett back in 2016.

Stetson Bennett has overcome a ton of obstacles en route to becoming Georgia’s starting quarterback in 2020.

Rewind years before he was leading a Bulldog team to a victory over Auburn, Bennett was once a 2-star recruit out of Pierce County High School in Blackshear, Georgia.

He wound up walking on at UGA in 2017. After redshirting, he transferred to Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi. And then he came back and sat behind Jake Fromm for another year. Now, he’s the starter on the No. 3 ranked Georgia team that just took down then-ranked No. 7 Auburn.

Former Georgia wide receiver Jeremiah Holloman took to Twitter after Georgia’s beatdown of Auburn to share a really cool message he received from Bennett when they both in high school in 2016. Bennett had messaged Holloman, who was a highly-ranked 4-star recruit out of Convington, for contact info for a member of the Auburn coaching staff. Bennett was preparing to go to an Auburn camp and “just wanted someone to know” that he’d be in attendance.

Bennett completed 17/28 passes for 240 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions during Georgia’s 26-7 victory over the Tigers.

As Holloman said on Twitter – “I think they know you now.”

Georgia’s Stetson Bennett ‘plays with confidence’

Georgia’s Stetson Bennett ‘plays with confidence’

KNOXVILLE — No. 12 Tennessee (2-0, 2-0 SEC) will travel to No. 3 Georgia (2-0, 2-0 SEC) Saturday in Week 3 of SEC action.

The Bulldogs are in its first season with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Todd Monken.

During the offseason, Georgia’s quarterback room showcased transfers JT Daniels (USC) and Jamie Newman (Wake Forest). Newman has since opted out of the 2020 season, while Daniels continues to recover from an ACL injury.

Stetson Bennett has emerged as Georgia’s starting quarterback and is 37-of-57 for 451 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception during the Bulldogs’ first two games.

“He obviously is a smart young man,” Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt said of Bennett. “You can see him getting in and out of plays. He moves wide receivers if they’ve got somebody that they can’t block on the perimeter. He gets them in position. He gets the ball out of his hand and doesn’t take sacks.

“He plays with confidence and I’ve got a lot of respect for him by the way he’s played in the two games that he’s come in. You can see that his teammates have confidence in him also.”

Georgia receiver Kearis Jackson breaks out for huge game vs Auburn

Georgia sophomore receiver Kearis Jackson had a huge game in Georgia’s 27-6 win over No. 7 Auburn. Details here

Ever since sophomore receiver Domonick Blaylock went down with another ACL injury this offseason, Georgia has been looking to fill the spot behind phenom George Pickens.

It looks like that will be sophomore receiver Kearis Jackson, who has formed a connection with junior quarterback Stetson Bennett in just their second game together.

Jackson caught nine passes for 147 yards versus No. 4 Auburn, just a week after leading the team in receptions and receiving yards versus Arkansas.

Jackson was a 4-star recruit from Fort Valley, Georgia in the Bulldogs No. 1 ranked recruiting class of 2018.

He was named a starter in the offseason of 2019, but a hand injury kept him out for some time, allowing Blaylock to settle into the No. 2 spot behind Pickens.

Jackson looks exsplosive, whether on punt returns or as a route-runner, which is huge for a Georgia offense that has been looking for playmakers.

Here are a few highlights of Jackson’s big night versus the Tigers:

Auburn vs Georgia: What the experts are saying

Auburn and Georgia face off on Saturday night in Athens.

Round 128 of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry will kick off this Saturday at 6:30 pm in Athens as seventh-ranked Auburn takes on No. 4 Georgia. Georgia is currently favored by six and a half points, but not all experts are sold on the Bulldogs. Here’s what they have to say:

247Sports:

Brad Crawford: UGA 27 Auburn 19

  • Why: Crawford is extremely high on Georgia’s defense in this one. He says the keys to the Bulldogs’ success on Saturday are to feed Zamir White and negate Seth Williams (good luck with that).

Chris Hummer: UGA 21 Auburn 17

  • Why: Hummer says that he has a lot of questions about both teams, especially Georgia’s quarterback situation. Ultimately he gives the nod to Georgia due to them being, “the more talented team at home.”

Athlon:

Steven Lassan: UGA

Mark Ross: UGA

Ben Weinrib: UGA

Sporting News:

Bill Bender: UGA 27 Auburn 23

  • Why: Bender says, “Georgia has quarterback questions, and it will be interesting if USC transfer JT Daniels sees his first action in a tough assignment against Auburn, which looked more consistent with Bo Nix in his sophomore season.”

NCAA Sports:

Barrett Sallee: Auburn

  • Why: Sallee isn’t buying that JT Daniels is 100% healthy and says that Auburn’s defense isn’t going to be threatened by either of Georgia’s quarterbacks. Sallee also thinks that Malzahn and Morris are going to open up that playbook a lot more on Saturday. “Take those points, but you won’t need them. Auburn will win this game outright.”

Bleacher Report:

Joe Tansey: Auburn (+6.5)

  • Why: Tansey did not like what he saw from Georgia against the Razorbacks, he cites the two costly turnovers by the Bulldogs and says, “Gus Malzahn’s team did not turn over the ball in its win over Kentucky and picked up 233 of its 324 total yards through the air.” He also adds that Bo Nix’s chemistry with his wide receivers is superior. Tansey also adds that history is on the Tigers’ side of covering the spread, “In their six meetings since 2015, Georgia is 5-1 outright, but Auburn has kept three games within one score, which makes the possibility of the Tigers covering the 6.5-point spread larger.”

USA Today:

Of the 17 sportswriters polled, only two picked the Tigers (I love being the underdog) and they are Ben Niewoehner of College Football News and Scott Steehn of WinnersandWhiners.

Overall many experts are skeptical of JT Daniels, as they should be, but they’re also not sold on how well Auburn’s O-line will hold up against Georgia’s solid defense. Personally, I like our chances at keeping this game dangerously close on Saturday. This game is one that everyone will be watching.

Georgia still ranked above Notre Dame in latest Amway Coaches Poll

After a very uninspiring season opening win, the Georgia Bulldogs are still ranked over Notre Dame.

[jwplayer utBWq5HX-er0jUifI]

Maybe Jamie Newman knew something about how inept the Georgia offense would be this season when he opted out of the 2020 season. After trailing 7-5 at halftime to one of the worst teams in the SEC, Arkansas, the Bulldogs broke through and won “handily” 37-10.

The optics look good for Kirby Smart’s team, but it wasn’t like their quarterback, D’wan Mathis in his first career start, found his groove in the second half. It was Stetson Bennett, in his second go-around with his home state team that led the charge.

The score makes it read like the Razorbacks were punched in the mouth early and Georgia coasted to a win, obviously not the case. How Georgia was No. 4 over the Irish in the latest Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports will bother me at least until next week when the Week 6 edition is released.

Taking a look at other surprises include Miami jumping 6 spots to No. 8, Mississippi State and Pittsburgh going from unranked to ranked, and Oklahoma and LSU dropping 13 spots after upset losses.

Here is the latest poll, with the ACC teams in bold and last weeks ranking in parenthesis.

George Pickens scores go-ahead Georgia TD, Stetson Bennett converts for 2 points

Georgia goes up three on Arkansas as Stetson Bennett connects with George Pickens on a 19-yard touchdown, converting the 2-point attempt.

The Dawgs lead for the first time this game against Arkansas following a 19-yard touchdown pass from Stetson Bennett to George Pickens.

Pickens now had 4 receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown.

The Dawgs went for two on the point after attempt where Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett made an amazing effort, stretching for the pylon and putting his team up three.  This is a massive momentum swing that Georgia fans can be happy about.
