Panthers announce flurry of practice-squad moves, including 4 additions

The Panthers have signed RB Emani Bailey, TCU’s leading rusher from 2023, to their practice squad along with three others.

The Carolina Panthers made a handful of moves to their practice squad on Tuesday.

As announced this afternoon, the team has signed four players to the group—including running back Emani Bailey. The 23-year-old is an undrafted rookie out of Texas Christian University.

A Dallas, Texas native, Bailey played his first two seasons of collegiate ball (2020 to 2021) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Over 16 games as a Ragin’ Cajun, he rushed for 702 yards and eight touchdowns on 112 carries.

Bailey transferred over to TCU in time for the 2022 campaign, where he was positioned behind Kendre Miller and Emari Demercado on the Horned Frogs’ depth chart. He took over starting duties in 2023, running for 1,209 yards and eight scores in 12 games.

The 5-foot-8, 201-pounder broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs this past spring. Bailey would, however, be selected in 2024 UFL draft in July—as he was taken in the third round by the Birmingham Stallions.

He’d remain with the Chiefs through the summer and go on to appear in all three of their preseason contests, amassing 29 rushing yards on 10 attempts.

Carolina also added wide receiver T.J. Luther, tight end Dominique Dafney and outside linebacker Thomas Incoom—who was waived from the 53-man roster this past Saturday.

To make room for the signings, the Panthers released wide receiver Sam Pinckney and safety Alex Cook from the practice squad.

They also placed running back Dillon Johnson and tight end Stephen Sullivan on the practice squad/injured list. Sullivan, as noted by head coach Dave Canales on Monday, sustained a “pretty significant” knee injury in Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Panthers hoping to have pair of rookie pass catchers back for Week 14

The Panthers are hoping to get both WR Jalen Coker and TE Ja’Tavion Sanders back for their Week 14 matchup against the Eagles.

The Carolina Panthers could have a pair of pretty important pass catchers back for their pretty daunting task in the City of Brotherly Love this upcoming Sunday.

Both wide receiver Jalen Coker and tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders were inactive for yesterday’s 26-23 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coker missed his second straight game due to a quadriceps issue while Sanders, who was carted away from the Week 12 contest against the Kansas City Chiefs, was sidelined with his neck injury.

Head coach Dave Canales was asked if he expects the rookies to return to the field for their Week 14 matchup against the 10-2 Philadelphia Eagles.

“That’s the hope, yes,” he replied. “And so, they both have a couple of big days—today and tomorrow—to evaluate where they’re at and the hope is to get them back up this week.”

Coker currently ranks fifth on the team in receiving yards (263). Sanders, meanwhile, ranks third and leads all Carolina tight ends in the category (302).

Veteran tight end Stephen Sullivan was elevated from the practice squad on Saturday to provide depth in the absence of Sanders. Sullivan, however, exited the game with what Canales described as a “pretty significant knee injury.”

Panthers announce 4 roster moves ahead of Week 13 matchup vs. Buccaneers

The Panthers have activated OLB Amaré Barno from the physically unable to perform list.

The Carolina Panthers made a handful of adjustments before their Week 13 clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As announced on Saturday afternoon, the team has activated outside linebacker Amaré Barno from the physically unable to perform list. The third-year defender has not played since tearing his ACL in last season’s Week 16 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Barno was selected by the Panthers in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. The Blythewood, S.C. native has since gone on to appear in 24 games, amassing 30 combined tackles (three for a loss) and 2.0 sacks.

To make room for Barno on the active roster, the Panthers waived outside linebacker Thomas Incoom. Incoom played in seven games for Carolina this season, with 156 of his 194 total snaps coming on special teams.

The Panthers also elevated wide receiver Dan Chisena and tight end Stephen Sullivan from the practice squad. They’ll provide some depth in the absences of rookie pass catchers Jalen Coker and Ja’Tavion Sanders, both of whom were ruled out from the contest on Friday.

Panthers make 3 (non-Diontae Johnson) moves on Tuesday

Diontae Johnson isn’t the only player on the move today.

Diontae Johnson wasn’t the only player that the Carolina Panthers maneuvered with today.

The league’s transaction report from Tuesday listed three moves for the team, including the release of safety Russ Yeast. The 25-year-old defensive back was signed from the practice squad to the active roster prior to Sunday’s outing against the Denver Broncos.

Yeast’s lone snap in the 28-14 loss came on special teams. He also played in seven snaps on special teams in the Week 4 defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Along with Yeast’s departure, the Panthers also made a swap on their practice squad—releasing inside linebacker Shaquille Quarterman and signing tight end Stephen Sullivan.

Quarterman, like Yeast, played exclusively on special teams for Carolina—with a 17-snap appearance in Week 7’s loss to the Washington Commanders.

Sullivan, who has tallied multiple stints with the Panthers dating back to 2021, now returns. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound pass catcher has notched 14 receptions and 171 receiving yards over 28 games for the organization.

Panthers sign 3 players to practice squad

The Panthers brought back a trio of familiar faces to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers brought back a trio of familiar faces on Thursday.

As announced this morning, the team has signed three players to their practice squad—running back Mike Boone, defensive lineman Jayden Peevy and safety Russ Yeast. All three were taken off the active roster as part of a busy Tuesday afternoon, when the Panthers signed offensive lineman Cade Mays and Thomas Incoom to the group.

Boone was Carolina’s second-leading rusher of the preseason, where he amassed 76 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. He has appeared in two games during the regular season, with all four of his attempts and each of his seven rushing yards having come in the Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Peevy has also seen some action over the past five weeks. The 6-foot-5, 308-pounder has played in four games—amassing six combined tackles, 1.5 sack, a forced fumble and a pass defensed.

To help make room for the returns, the Panthers released tight end Stephen Sullivan from the practice squad.

Panthers bring back 2 players to practice squad on Monday

Speedy WR Deven Thompkins has returned to the Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers are still sorting out their wideout room in the absence of Adam Thielen.

As announced on Monday, the team has signed receiver Deven Thompkins to their practice squad. The 24-year-old was a member of Carolina’s summer roster before being waived/injured on Aug. 11.

Thompkins spent the 2023 campaign alongside Panthers head coach Dave Canales, who was serving as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator. Canales gave reporters an idea of what the team was getting in the speedy 5-foot-8, 155-pounder when they added him during the offseason.

“I’m excited to get him in here,” he said of Thompkins back in July. “He’s another kick returner as well. He’s got some explosive elements to his play—so, really fun. Brings a different style of guy. We got a really big, strong group. But it’s also good to have those change-of-pace guys that can attack the defense a different way.”

Thielen, the offense’s primary slot receiver, was placed on injured reserve last Tuesday due to the hamstring injury he sustained in Week 3’s 36-22 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Thompkins, under Canales, played 63.7 percent of his snaps from the inside this past season.

Carolina also signed tight end Stephen Sullivan to the practice squad. Sullivan appeared in 28 games for the Panthers between 2021 and 2023.

To help make some room for the returns, the team released rookie wideout Sam Pinckney from the group.

Giants work out former Texans fifth-round pick

The New York Giants worked out a former Houston Texans fifth-round pick on Monday alongside several other tight ends.

The New York Giants held a small group of players for a private workout on Monday in East Rutherford, including a former Houston Texans fifth-round pick, tight end Teagan Quitoriano.

The 24-year-old Quitoriano went No. 170 overall in the 2022 NFL draft and has appeared in 16 career games (11 starts), recording nine receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He was released with an injury settlement (calf) earlier this month.

In addition to Quitoriano, the Giants also worked out several other tight ends — Armani Rogers, Stephen Sullivan, and Joel Wilson.

Rogers, 26, signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio in 2022. He also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles over the summer. He’s appeared in 11 games (three starts) and recorded five receptions for 64 yards, adding 26 additional yards on two rushes.

The 27-year-old Sullivan was a seventh-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2020 NFL draft but has spent most of his career with the Carolina Panthers. In 29 career games, he’s hauled in 14 receptions for 171 yards.

Finally, Wilson, 24, signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Central Michigan in 2023. He’s also spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers but has not appeared in a regular season game.

None of the four were immediately signed.

Panthers release TE Stephen Sullivan from injured reserve

The Panthers have parted ways with TE Stephen Sullivan.

The Carolina Panthers are continuing to shuffle their tight end room.

As first noted by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, just hours before the start of tonight’s preseason opener against the New England Patriots, Stephen Sullivan has been released from injured reserve. Both Joe Person of The Athletic and Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer would later add that the Panthers reached an injury settlement with Sullivan, who has been sidelined for a week due to a quad issue.

Sullivan was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks. That was where the Louisiana State University product would first cross paths with Panthers president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan as well as head coach Dave Canales.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound pass catcher has spent each of the last three seasons with the Panthers. He has amassed 14 receptions and 171 receiving yards over 28 appearances in Carolina.

Panthers rookie TE Ja’Tavion Sanders experiencing ‘exponential growth’ in training camp

Panthers HC Dave Canales praised rookie TE Ja’Tavion Sanders for stepping up to his opportunities this summer.

Carolina Panthers rookie Ja’Tavion Sanders isn’t backing down from opportunity.

With so many of his fellow tight ends currently sidelined with injuries, the 21-year-old has stepped up this summer. Head coach Dave Canales spoke on Sanders’ progress following Saturday’s outing of training camp.

“It’s exponential growth, every day,” Canales said. “What I’ve seen him do is just kinda really take big leaps in the techniques. And you’ll see that with young guys. You’ll see big leaps, and then you wanna get them to the point where it’s consistent. And then we take our incremental growth—just like some of the veteran guys who have been around.

“So JT is taking those steps that we’re looking for. Made a big play at Fan Fest to end it, to end the scrimmage on a corner. Had a couple nice plays today, nice catches. He’s doin’ it. He’s making the most of his opportunity. It’s pushed him right up with that first group, to be able to show the guys you can count on him and he’s been really dependable with that.”

The Panthers selected Sanders with the very first pick in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft. He comes over from the University of Texas fresh off a pair of First-team All-Big 12 selections—thanks, in part, to his 99 receptions, 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns between 2022 and 2023.

As of now, Carolina is currently without Tommy Tremble, Ian Thomas and Stephen Sullivan—the team’s top three options at the tight end position from a year ago. So if Sanders keeps growing, perhaps that No. 4 spot will be a bit too small for the promising pass catcher.

Panthers’ updated training camp roster following Thursday’s addition of Curtis Hodges

The Panthers added Curtis Hodges to fill up their tight end room after losing Stephen Sullivan to a quadriceps injury.

The Carolina Panthers made one more adjustment before hitting the field in Clemson for their 2024 Fan Fest.

As announced on Thursday, the team placed tight end Stephen Sullivan on the shelf due to a quadriceps injury. To fill the room back up, they signed former Washington Commander Curtis Hodges.

Here’s an updated look at the roster following today’s moves:
