Recruiting Round-up: How MSU Football commits performed last weekend

Take a look at how some of the commits in Michigan State’s 2021 recruiting class performed this past weekend.

We have eclipsed the first Friday in November, in what may be the wildest year high school football has ever seen. Some of Michigan State’s commits are still in their regular season, while others are competing in their state playoffs.

Michigan State has added 19 commits to its 2021 recruiting class and as their senior seasons unfold they are giving Spartan nation reasons to be excited about what the future of Michigan State Football has to offer.

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights the 2021 class had this past week.

A day after Michigan State received commitments from 4-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny and JUCO offensive tackle Brandon Baldwin, the class of 2021 has garnered another commitment. 3-star cornerback Steffan Johnson announced his commitment to MSU on Tuesday via Twitter.

Johnson, who stands at 6 feet and 160 pounds, attends Venice High School in Venice, Florida. He is 247Sports’ No. 134 cornerback and No. 210 player in the state of Florida for the class of 2021.

When he announced his commitment date last week, he was projected to go to Michigan State. But, over the last few days the Crystal Ball projections had him going back to Rutgers over Michigan State. Ultimately, Johnson chose Michigan State over Rutgers and other colleges. Johnson is the 19th different commit in the class of 2021. Mel Tucker has done an impressive job of recruiting prospects over the past few months, will it continue as the 2020 season comes to an end and preparations for the 2021 season begin?

2021 3-star cornerback target Steffan Johnson announced his commitment date on his Twitter Monday morning. Johnson said he will be committing on November 10th.

Johnson, who is 6’0 and 160 pounds, attends Venice High School in Venice, Florida. He is 247sports’ no. 134 cornerback and no. 210 player in the state of Florida for the class of 2021. Johnson’s Crystal Ball Predictions currently have him going to Michigan State with Rutgers being a close second.

Johnson received his offer from MSU on July 13th. He previously committed to Rutgers but de-committed on July 25th. He then narrowed down his list to five schools back in August. Michigan State will have tough competition for his commitment against the likes of Rutgers, South Florida, Florida International, and Florida Atlantic. Perhaps his teammate, and Spartan commit, Charles Brantley can complete the flip and bring Johnson over to East Lansing.

Three-star DB Steffan Johnson lists Michigan State in his top five teams

Michigan State has made the final group for three-star defensive back Steffan Johnson.

Johnson, who decommitted from Rutgers last month, is a three-star defensive back from Venice High School in Florida. He is teammates with current MSU commit Charles Brantley. Johnson kept Rutgers in his top five, a group which also featured three group of five teams from Johnson’s home state of Florida: South Florida, Florida International, and Florida Atlantic.

Michigan State is considered the favorite to land Johnson. Johnson starred as an emergency quarterback for Venice in 2019, but his future is thought to be on the defensive side of the ball.

Michigan State recruiting target Steffan Johnson de-commits from Rutgers

Mel Tucker lands another three-star cornerback out of Venice, Florida.

Crootin’.

Not long after Mel Tucker and Michigan State football offered him, former Rutgers commit Steffan Johnson has opened up his recruitment.

Johnson, who is teammates–and defensive backfield partners–with MSU commit Chuck Brantley at Venice High in Florida, announced on Instagram Live Saturday that he was no longer committed to Rutgers and that his recruitment is now open. Many recruiting insiders think MSU has a very good shot at landing Johnson thanks in large part to Brantley already on board at MSU.

Around the time Johnson tweeted that he had a big announcement coming, Brantley tweeted the following:

Then after Johnson de-commited Brantley tweeted:

Smoke. Fire. Yada yada.

Johnson is a three-star prospect, rated as the No. 123 cornerback in the class of 2021 by the 247Sports composite rankings. He is an intriguing developmental prospect, as he was forced to play quarterback for Venice during his junior season due to injuries. There Johnson rushed for nearly 1,000 yards while lead his team to the 7A state semifinals in Florida. In 2018 Johnson was the starting quarterback at North Port High School. MSU’s coaches are hoping Johnson’s athletic profile make him a good candidate to transition to a full-time defensive back if he decides to go green.

Rutgers, Virginia, and Michigan State are Johnson’s only power five offers. He also has offers from a number of group of five schools.

Michigan State’s 2021 recruiting class ranks 62nd in the country and 12th in the Big Ten.

Michigan State Football offers 2021 3-star CB Steffan Johnson

MSU has offered 2021 3-star cornerback Steffan Johnson, a player who is currently committed to Rutgers.

Michigan State Football continues to chip away at their 2021 recruiting needs, and today it was announced that they have offered 2021 3-star cornerback Steffan Johnson from Venice, Florida. Johnson is currently committed to Rutgers.

According to Stephen Brooks of 247Sports, Johnson is a good friend and teammate of current MSU commit Charles Brantley.

Johnson is the No. 129 ranked cornerback in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 195 ranked player in Florida by the 247Sports rankings. As mentioned, Johnson is currently committed to Rutgers, but his relationship with Brantley shouldn’t be discounted, and Spartan fans have already experienced the heartbreak of a decommit in Gabe ‘Spida’ Nealy and karma says that MSU is due to experience the other side of that equation soon.
