LOOK: Wisconsin guard Chucky Hepburn releases statement on transfer decision

Wisconsin star guard Chucky Hepburn entered the transfer portal on Thursday, electing to depart Madison in search of an opportunity elsewhere.

Hepburn later released a statement on his decision to enter the transfer portal via Instagram.

“Thank you, Wisconsin,” Hepburn wrote. “For everything you have given me. I will carry the lessons and memories from my time here with me wherever I go. And I will always be proud to have been a Badger.”

In 103 career starts, Hepburn averaged 9.8 points, 3.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. His impact on both sides of the ball made him a driving force behind the team’s success, and transformed him into a fan favorite at the Kohl Center.

Here is that full statement:

Wisconsin’s platoon will look different in 2024-25 after the departure of four rotation players — three via the transfer portal and one via graduation. Overall, eight players are gone from the 2023-2024 team.

Barring any major setback or portal news, class of 2024 point guard Daniel Freitag will likely replace Hepburn’s void at point guard next fall.

Broncos release statement on releasing QB Russell Wilson

“We are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond,” the Broncos said after cutting Russell Wilson.

The Denver Broncos announced Monday that they plan to release quarterback Russell Wilson once the NFL’s new league year begins on March 13.

After news broke of Wilson’s upcoming release, Broncos general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton released the following statement:

We spoke with Russell Wilson today to inform him of his release after the start of the league year. On behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career.

As we move forward, we are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond. We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency.

Wilson is now set to become a free agent, and he should draw plenty of interest from teams seeking a budget-friendly veteran quarterback.

As for the Broncos, they could find their next starting quarterback either through free agency or the NFL draft. It would not be surprising to see Denver sign a QB this month and then also draft a QB in April. The next few weeks will be busy for the Broncos as they seek Wilson’s replacement.

Chiefs issue statement after Super Bowl parade shooting

The #Chiefs issued a statement after Wednesday’s shooting at Union Station.

The Kansas City Chiefs issued a statement after a shooting occurred at the Super Bowl victory parade held in their honor on Wednesday.

“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and, all of Kansas City.

“We are in close communication with the Mayor’s office as well as the Kansas City Police Department. At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff, and their families are safe and accounted for. We thank local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist.”

Wednesday’s unimaginable tragedy left at least one person dead and many others injured. Law enforcement apprehended at least one suspect, but for now, details regarding the incident and the total number of victims remain unclear.

NFL spokesman shares statement on Alvin Kamara situation

An NFL spokesman shared a statement on Alvin Kamara’s legal situation. The Saints should be bracing for a potential suspension:

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

We’ve seen some significant movement in Alvin Kamara’s legal proceedings — the New Orleans Saints running back agreed to a plea deal in the Nevada criminal case stemming from his alleged involvement in last year’s beating at a Las Vegas nightclub while reaching an out-of-court settlement with the victim in a Louisiana civil case.

The end of the legal process opens the door for potential NFL discipline, and it sounds like that could come swiftly. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero shared a statement from the league’s vice president of communications Brian McCarthy, who said “We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review.”

If Kamara had been charged with a felony, as was initially the case, he would be facing a six-game suspension as per the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Because he instead agreed to plead no-contest to a lesser misdemeanor charge, he could be suspended for fewer games. The Saints will hit the road for four of their first six matchups, so they could use his help in hostile environments:

  • Week 1 vs. Tennessee Titans
  • Week 2 at Carolina Panthers
  • Week 3 at Green Bay Packers
  • Week 4 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Week 5 at New England Patriots
  • Week 6 at Houston Texans

Kamara is scheduled to join his teammates for training camp in just two weeks, so hopefully this can get resolved before then. The sooner the Saints know exactly how many games Kamara will be unavailable the more easily they can plan for life without him. They’ve already made significant investments at running back by signing veteran free agent Jamaal Williams and drafting third-round rookie Kendre Miller, but if Kamara is going to be out of action for extensive time they might need to make another move to maintain the depth chart. Stay tuned.

‘Consummate professional’: Jerry Jones releases official statement on Ezekiel Elliott’s release

The Cowboys owner said the decision to release Elliott was “extremely difficult,” but called it a decision that’s best for both parties. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Not every departing Cowboys player gets an official statement from the club to mark the occasion, but not every player means what Ezekiel Elliott has meant to the franchise.

The Cowboys officially released the beloved star running back on Wednesday after seven seasons, two league rushing titles, and a truckload of highlight-reel memories for Cowboys fans.

Team owner Jerry Jones had this to say about the decision to move forward without the playmaker that Stephen Jones famously called “the straw that stirs our drink” in Dallas:

“Zeke’s impact and influence is seared into the Cowboys franchise in a very special and indelible way. He has been a consummate professional and leader that set a tone in our locker room, on the practice field and in the huddle. Zeke defined what a great teammate should be, and anyone that has ever played a team sport would be lucky to have a teammate like Zeke and be much better for it. His commitment and passion for winning is selfless, and the accountability he brings everyday earned the respect of our coaches, his teammates and our entire organization. He wore the Cowboys Star with pride and purpose every single time he put it on, and we’re a better franchise because of the example he set for veterans and rookies alike. That carried over into our community as well, with Zeke’s generosity and spirit about giving and caring for others.

“We have mutually agreed with Zeke that the best decision for everyone is that he will be able to experience free agency, and we can increase our flexibility and options as well. This is one of the toughest parts of operating a team. Moments like this come, and extremely difficult decisions and choices are made. For the franchise. For me personally. For players too. We will always have a special place and love for Zeke and what he means to our Cowboys family, both as a person and a player. That will never change.”

A former fourth-overall draft pick, Elliott ends his Dallas tenure with 8,262 rushing yards, behind only Tony Dorsett and Emmitt Smith in Cowboys history.

But apart from his stats, his punishing running style, and his considerable toughness in playing through injuries, much of Elliott’s legacy with the team will be his leadership in the locker room, the way he handled himself with the media, and his commitment to community work off the field.

Elliott is now free to sign with another club, and several others have already been named as possible destinations for the 27-year-old free agent.

It’s a sad day for many in Cowboys Nation as a true fan favorite appears to be riding off for new pastures.

But it’s worth pointing out that Elliott and the Cowboys are also free to restructure an entirely new (and cap-friendlier) deal that would bring him back as a short-yardage/red-zone threat and backup to Tony Pollard.

#Chiefs CEO & Chairman Clark Hunt released a statement on the passing of WR Otis Taylor.

The Kansas City Chiefs lost an all-time great on Friday and the entire Chiefs Kingdom is now mourning his loss.

Former Chiefs WR Otis Taylor died at 80 years old after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. A draft pick in 1965 out of Prairie View A&M, Taylor spent a decade terrorizing opposing defenses as one of the premier wide receivers of his era.

Chiefs CEO & Chairman Clark Hunt released a statement regarding Taylor’s passing on Friday, delivering his heartfelt thoughts and prayers.

“The Kansas City Chiefs organization is saddened by the passing of Otis Taylor. My family and I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Otis’ wife Regina, his sister Odell and the entire Taylor family as we mourn his passing. Otis was a Chief throughout his 11-year career, and he played an integral part in the early success of our franchise. He became a Kansas City icon with his signature touchdown in Super Bowl IV, as he helped the Chiefs bring home our first Lombardi Trophy. He was one of the most dynamic receivers of his era, and he helped revolutionize the position. Off-the-field, he was kind and dedicated to his community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Otis’ legacy will live forever as a member of the Chiefs Hall of Fame.”

Marcus Maye’s attorney issues statement following Thursday arrest

Marcus Maye’s attorney issues statement following Thursday arrest, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

Thursday morning, New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Maye was arrested with accusations of aggravated assault with a firearm. Not long after reports hit the airwaves, Maye’s attorney issued a statement, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Maye’s attorney Eric Hessler is doing right by his client here with a quickly released and direct statement.

This continues to be a “wait and see” story that is sure to be more complex than maybe initially assumed, as these cases often are. However, with a previous arrest stemming from a Feb. 2021 DUI and property damage charge, complexity should be expected. It will be interesting to see how this situation, if charges hold, impact Maye’s outstanding case.

From the football standpoint, this could put New Orleans in quite the crunch when it comes to their secondary, but the depth they’ve assembled is impressive. If Maye were to miss time in 2022, the team still has safeties P.J. Williams and Justin Evans to fall back on. Evans, who hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2018 season, has been a great story thus far this offseason and a training camp standout. The Saints seem equipped to deal with what may lie ahead with Maye’s cases if found culpable.

This is a developing story.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson says goodbye to Saints fans, introduces himself to Philly

C.J. Gardner-Johnson says goodbye to Saints fans after Eagles trade, introduces himself to Philly’s faithful:

It’s never easy to say goodbye, especially to a player as talented and entertaining as C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The former New Orleans Saints defensive back was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles this week and took time on Twitter to address the situation, releasing a statement that bid farewell to the Saints fans who spent three years cheering him on — and introducing himself to the Eagles faithful who will get to know him in the weeks and months ahead.

Gardner-Johnson said that playing pro football was “the opportunity of a lifetime,” and expressed his appreciation for the Who Dat Nation that supported him and the Saints organization that put him in position to make a name for himself. He also shared some words to his former teammates in New Orleans and the bonds they built together.

Seeing Gardner-Johnson in a different uniform will be unsettling, especially when the Saints visit Philadelphia in Week 17 late this season. If we’ve learned anything about Gardner-Johnson throughout his Saints career, it’s a safe bet to say he’ll have that date circled on his calendar.

In the statement, Allen reiterated that neither club is for sale at this time, nor are any sales discussions underway.

For now, Allen’s focus will remain on “winning.”

Bryan Harsin releases statement on his return for 2022

“This has been one of the hardest weeks of my career” – Harsin releases a statement upon his confirmation of returning in 2022.

After it was reported that Bryan Harsin would indeed be retained as the head coach of the Auburn Tigers football program, president Jay Gogue and Harsin released statements on Friday.

I am pleased to report that the evaluation of concerns raised regarding our football program is complete. I am equally pleased to confirm that Bryan Harsin remains our head football coach. – Gogue on Harsin

We can finally put to bed the speculation surrounding his job status and focus on the task at hand. The football program has work to do ahead of beginning spring football in the coming months. There is still the matter of addressing the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach vacancy, as well as trying to retain cornerbacks coach Zac Etheridge.

The full statement from Bryan Harsin:

Todd Van Emst/AU Athletics

This has been one of the hardest weeks of my career and it had nothing to do with my coaching ability. The personal attacks on me and my family went too far and were without justification. Their resolve through this experience has been incredible but also completely expected. We saw and felt the worst of the worst in some people. Fortunately, we also saw the best of the best in others and we will always be grateful for the support of so many through a very difficult time – our players, staff, the Auburn family, and many others.

I know who I am as a husband, father and football coach and cooperated fully throughout this process. I believe that every challenge in life is an opportunity to grow and learn. This is no different. Every day we’re not moving forward together is a step in the wrong direction. In order for us to take the Auburn program where we all want it to go we must, at all levels, commit to each other and this great university that we all love. I’m confident we can get there under the leadership of Dr. Gogue, incoming President Roberts, Allen Greene, and our Board of Trustees.

I’m proud to be your head coach and appreciate the opportunity to lead the incredible group of young men in our locker room. War Eagle!
