Pete Carroll on Seahawks ownership: ‘They’re not football people’

Here’s what Carroll had to say in his last appearance on Seattle Sports radio.

In his final press conference as the Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll was gracious, passionate and emotional. It was also painfully clear that although the team called it a mutual decision that Carroll wanted to keep coaching this team.

Carroll isn’t exactly going quietely, though. Here’s what Carroll had to say in his last appearance on Seattle Sports radio.

“I have very, very strong feelings about what we did, and where we screwed it up and why we didn’t come through the way we wanted to and what we did well. So we just needed to touch on all of that, and the perception that the media has on the outside is not always accurate… And then, OK, what is the essence of the adjustments that are necessary? That’s where maybe we don’t see eye to eye on, because I see it one way and I think I’ve got a way to fix it and I’m not going to kind of halfway fix it… I’ve got real precise and specific thoughts, and they may not see it that way, they may not agree with it, they may not see that that’s the right answer or that’s not the answer that makes them feel good… The difficult part is…it’s really hard because they’re not football people. They’re not coaches, and so to get to the real details of it is really difficult for other people.”

Pete Carroll is ousted as Seahawks’ head coach; social media reacts to the shocking news

Pete Carroll was relieved of his duties as the Seahawks’ head coach after 14 years, and social media was buzzing with the shocking news.

If you were shocked by the Wednesday news that the Seattle Seahawks have made the decision to move on from Pete Carroll as their head coach after 14 seasons, you are not alone.

Based on his comments after Seattle’s 9-8 season — the second in three years in which the team didn’t make the playoffs — Carroll might have been one of those shocked by the news, which came after Carroll’s annual postseason meeting with Seahawks owner/chairperson Jody Allen.

“I plan to be coaching this team,” Carroll told Seattle Sports 710 AM this week. “I told you that I love these guys, and that’s what I would like to be doing and see how far I can go. I’m not worn out. I’m not tired. I’m not any of that stuff. I need to do a better job and I need to help my coaches more and we need to do a better job of coaching, and there’s a lot of area for improvement.”

Now, Carroll will move to an advisory role, per the team.

As you would expect, social media was humming with this one.

Pete Carroll is no longer the head coach of the Seahawks and NFL fans paid tribute to a legend

Carroll will move into a role as an advisor for the franchise.

After spending more than a decade as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Pete Carroll will no longer have that job next season.

According to a statement from Seahawks chair Jody Allen, the Super Bowl XLVIII champion will remain with the organization as an advisor to the team. Carroll had a 137-89 record (.606) during his time as a head coach in the NFL.

Carroll, 72, has had an incredibly accomplished career on the sidelines of a football field and it makes sense that he would want to take the next steps of his career.

But fans were stunned by the sudden news of his departure as head coach in Seattle.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll’s contract has an option for 2025 season

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2023 season may end today, depending on how things go in Arizona and at Lambeau Field this afternoon.

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2023 season may end today, depending on how things go in Arizona and at Lambeau Field this afternoon. When it’s over the team will have some choices to make, including at the top of the organization.

According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero at NFL.com, Pete Carroll’s contract runs through 2024 and has an option in 2025. They also have a note that states the team is always evaluating and updating contingency plans in case Carroll decides to walk away.

“The Seahawks always are evaluating and updating contingency plans in the event longtime coach Pete Carroll, now 72 years old, decides to walk away. Seahawks chair Jody Allen usually meets with Carroll and general manager John Schneider in the days after the season concludes — which could be extended by a playoff run, with a win Sunday over the Cardinals plus a Packers loss to the Bears gets Seattle in — any decisions will wait until then. Carroll is under contract through 2024, with an option for 2025 that can be exercised in the offseason.”

If you were reading carefully, you noticed there isn’t any actual news here – aside from Carroll’s 2025 year being an option rather than a regular part of his contract as we originally were led to believe.

It’s of course possible that Carroll may decide to quit, but it would certainly come as a surprise. That’s also the only way he’ll be leaving, as the organization essentially decided to keep Carroll over Russell Wilson not even two years ago. The Seahawks are not going to fire him, even if they lose today and finish 8-9.

Carroll has been taking criticism this past week for his team’s loss to the Steelers, a game they were favored to win by 3.5 points going in. Missed tackles and atrocious decisions on fourth down were the main culprits in that loss, but penalties have also been a serious problem all season – one in which this team has underperformed its full potential by quite a bit.

Carroll’s track record of making the playoffs has also been aided by the expansion of the wild card seeds. If it were still only six teams per conference they wouldn’t have made the postseason since 2020.

Still, it would come as a shock if Carroll were to actually move on this offseason.

If the Seahawks are going to try something different, our best guess is that Carroll might get elevated into a different kind of job – more team president than day-to-day head coach, similar to the role Pat Riley has been in with the Miami Heat since 2008.

Carroll has energy and knowledge that the organization would be foolish to send packing – but if they’re ever going to get back to the Super Bowl history says they’ll need to do it with a different head coach. John Harbaugh has a good chance to buck the trend this year, but NFL coaches who win a Super Bowl then go a decade without one tend to never get back there.

Jeff Bezos reportedly interested in buying the Seahawks

Bezos has reportedly been banned from bidding on the Commanders. However, his path to the NFL may come through a team in the other Washington.

In a stunning tidbit of news, tucked deep in a report from Albert Breer of Monday Morning Quarterback, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is interested in becoming the owner of the Seattle Seahawks.

Bezos, who founded Amazon in the Emerald City, has not been secret about setting his sights on the NFL. With Thursday Night Football streaming rights given exclusively to Amazon Prime, and being seen with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at games, it’s no surprise one of the wealthiest men on the planet would be interested in owning an NFL team.

The road to the NFL for Bezos likely won’t be through the Washington Commanders, as owner Daniel Snyder has reportedly banned Bezos from placing a bid on the franchise. Snyder apparently is still holding a grudge on Bezos since his newspaper, The Washington Post, reported on the toxic workplace in the franchise. However, another path to NFL ownership may present itself in the other Washington.

Breer mentions “Jeff Bezos would be as interested, if not more so, in buying the Seahawks than the Commanders” in his report.

Currently, the Seattle Seahawks are owned by the Paul G. Allen Trust, which is managed by his sister, Jody. Eventually, the Seattle Seahawks and the Portland Trail Blazers are to be sold, as Paul Allen dictated his assets be sold off for philanthropy. Although Jody Allen has admitted a time will come when both the Seahawks and Blazers are sold, that time is not now. She has already rebuked a potential report regarding Nike founder Phil Knight wanting to purchase the Trail Blazers.

While Allen remains focused on guiding her teams to success, it may not be long before another Pacific Northwest mega-billionaire comes knocking on her door with an offer.

Portland Trail Blazers chair Jody Allen …

Portland Trail Blazers chair Jody Allen has never ignored attempts by Damian Lillard to reach her to discuss the state of the franchise as reported by a Thursday article in the New York Post, according to the superstar and his agent, Aaron Goodwin. “That never happened,” Goodwin told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Friday. “We have a great relationship with Allen.”

The New York Post quoted an anonymous …

The New York Post quoted an anonymous team source as saying: “Damian wanted to sit down and have a conversation with Jody about the team and she didn’t return his call. Then he tried to email her. Eventually she just never responded and put him in touch with Bert. When you own a team, there are critical key decisions to make and you should be the one involved in making the decisions.” Lillard told The Oregonian/OregonLive Thursday night following the Blazers’ summer league loss to Detroit at the Thomas & Mack Center that the portions of the New York Post’s article pertaining to him were not true. But he declined at the time to be directly quoted. On Friday, Lillard issued a statement to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports and then later agreed to allow his quote from Thursday to be used by The Oregonian/OregonLive. “I saw the article,” Lillard said Thursday night. “Every time I’ve reached out to her, it’s never been a problem.”

Lillard’s statement to Haynes was more …

Lillard’s statement to Haynes was more elaborate on the subject: “I’m not sure where that story came from. Every time I’ve ever reached out to Jody, she has always taken time to speak with me. I never sent an email or none of that. I have a great relationship with management and ownership. My agent, Aaron Goodwin, speaks with ownership and management on a regular basis. This is a non-story.”
