Colts vs. Titans: Staff picks and predictions for Week 10

Colts Wire staff makes their picks.

The Indianapolis Colts (5-3) are prepared to visit the Tennessee Titans (6-2) on Thursday night for a Week 10 matchup at Nissan Stadium.

>>> Place bet <<<

The Colts are two-point underdogs on the road in this matchup and are coming off of a loss against the Ravens with a lot to prove. This game should have plenty of implications in the AFC playoff race while also featuring the top two teams in the AFC South.

Here’s how the Colts Wire staff sees the matchup unfolding on Thursday night:

Kevin Hickey (@KevinHickey11): Colts 22, Titans 19

Like most of the games the Colts have played this season, this is a tough one to predict. Both of these teams know each other well, especially seeing as both Frank Reich and Mike Vrabel started their respective tenures in the same season in 2018.

But the Colts have a chance to bounce back after a tough loss at home against the Ravens. The Titans defense isn’t what it used to be. They are 25th in pressure rate (19.1%) and dead last in sack rate (3.06%). That will be the key for the Colts offense to have success. When Philip Rivers has protection—and T.Y. Hilton—he finds success.

Where this game will be determined is in the trenches. Stopping Derrick Henry is the game plan and while most teams don’t have a chance in slowing him down, the Colts do. Their elite run defense is first in yards per carry allowed (3.3) and third in rushing yards per game allowed (83.6). They win this game because they contain Henry.

Divisional matchups are almost always unpredictable, and this falls into that category. But the Colts have a chance to bounce back on offense against a poor Titans defense while also having the scheme and personnel to stop the human train that is Henry.

Sam Sinclair (@samsinclair96): Colts 31, Titans 28

In what is the most important game for the Colts so far this year, they’ll head south to Nashville to face the Tennessee Titans in a battle for first place in the AFC South.

Things I’ll be watching for is if the Titans offense can move the ball early with the run game. Their offense runs through their All-Pro running back Derrick Henry, and their pass offense is mostly play-action. If the Colts can get the Titans into a pass-first approach, that could help out a lot as the Titans are dealing with injuries along the offensive line.

For the Colts offense, they must get back to how they played the last two weeks against the Bengals and Lions. The Titans are 18th in the NFL in DVOA and have had a season-long struggle to get their defense playing at a sufficient level. Tennessee struggles to get pressure on the QB, so expect Rivers to have a big game.

This is a tough game to predict. Both teams are very evenly matched, and both know this game will go a long way into deciding who wins the AFC South and gets a home playoff game in January. While the Titans are 6-2, five of their wins have come by fewer than seven points. Even with the Titans being a two-point home favorite, I’ll take the Colts in this one.

John Alfieri (@alfierijohn): Titans 27, Colts 17

In a short week in which the Colts struggled offensively against the Ravens, this one on the road does not look favorable for Frank Reich and company. The Titans have proven they can go toe to toe with just about any team in the league, and the Colts have struggled to show that thus far.

Stopping Derrick Henry will be the key in this one. The Colts run defense has been stellar all season, and they will need to bring their “A-game” against one of the league’s best backs.

Where this game will be tough for the Colts will be stopping the passing game with Ryan Tannehill and A.J. Brown. They have had a stellar connection all season, and the Colts do not have a No. 1 corner that can shut down a receiver of Brown’s caliber.

The Colts will have to be able to move the ball on the ground in order to beat Tennessee. The way the past few games have gone, this is an unfavorable matchup. All is not lost with a loss, but the Colts will have to right the ship going forward to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Colts vs. Ravens: Staff picks and predictions for Week 9

How the Colts Wire staff sees Week 9 shaking out.

The Indianapolis Colts (5-2) and Baltimore Ravens (5-2) are prepared to have a battle at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday for a Week 9 matchup.

While this battle will likely have implications down the road in the AFC playoff race, the Ravens are slightly favored on the road despite dealing with COVID-19 issues that could have several defensive starters out. The experts around the league are also bullish on Baltimore’s chances to pull off a road win.

Here’s how the Colts Wire staff sees the Week 9 games shaking out:

Kevin Hickey (@KevinHickey11): Ravens 24, Colts 21

This is an incredibly difficult matchup to predict. My heart wants to go with the Colts, who have won five of their last six games. But this Ravens team is unlike any challenge they’ve faced yet this season. From the league-leading rushing attack to its suffocating defense, the Ravens are quite the challenge.

The Colts could absolutely win this game but they would need to play a near-perfect outing. The defense will need to blitz Lamar Jackson but that could make the unit susceptible to explosive plays. On the other side, the offense has to find ways to move the ball down the field against one of the best defenses in the NFL.

In all, this should be a tight matchup and one that will likely feature more defense than offense. If the Colts come out with a win, I’ll be fully bought in for the second half. But the Ravens are the caliber of team they haven’t faced yet, and it may be too much when its all said and done on Sunday.

Sam Sinclair (@samsinclair96): Colts 31, Ravens 27

The start of the toughest stretch for the Indianapolis Colts starts this Sunday when the 5-2 Baltimore Ravens come to Indianapolis in a matchup that will go a long way for playoff seeding.

The Ravens are fresh off a massive 28-24 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. When they travel to Indianapolis they will be without some key contributors, starting RB Mark Ingram, All-Pro LT Ronnie Stanley, and star CB Marlon Humphrey.

For the Colts, they come into this matchup after a rather impressive road victory over the Detroit Lions. An efficient day by Philip Rivers, two TDs by Nyheim Hines, and a defensive TD pushed Indianapolis over Detroit 41-21.

If the Colts can contain Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore potent run attack, first in the NFL, that will force the Ravens to throw, which is what Pittsburgh did to them last week. In a close matchup like this, turnovers will be key. Rivers has only one turnover in the last two games, if Indianapolis can get another efficient, turnover-free, day by Rivers that will help.

With the Colts coming in off a two-game winning streak, and arguably playing their most complimentary football so far this season, and Baltimore  coming in off a divisional home loss, and losing two of their top players, I’ll take the home underdogs in this game.

John Alfieri (@alfierijohn): Colts 28, Ravens 24

This highly anticipated AFC matchup has lingering playoff implications as both teams try to catch up in their respective divisions. The Ravens’ COVID-19 issues have put a slight asterisk on this game as Baltimore may be without multiple key defensive starters.

The Colts come off possibly their best game of the year against the Detroit Lions, where everything seemed to click on both sides of the ball. They will need similar success to beat a talented Ravens team this week.

It will all come down to the Colts’ ability to contain Lamar Jackson, who has not lived up to his record-breaking 2019 season. Still, he can be a threat at any point. Providing pressure on Jackson will limit his ability to scramble and will shut down the most deadly part of this offense.

On the other side of the ball, the Colts have to protect Philip Rivers. Between Calais Campbell, Tyus Bowser, and Yannick Ngakoue, this will be possibly the best pass rush Indy will face all year.

In the end this will be a tight game that will likely be decided by a field goal. As we head into Week 9, these games are crucial to playoff seeding. We could very well see this same matchup in the postseason.

Texas Longhorns vs. West Virginia: Confidence level and staff predictions

Longhorns Wire staff members express their confidence level ahead of Texas’ critical matchup with West Virginia on Saturday.

Ricardo B. Brazziell-USA TODAY Sports

Texas is looking to win their third consecutive game when they host the West Virginia Mountaineers on Nov. 7.

The Longhorns are 2-1 overall at home this season with the lone loss to Texas Christian in early October. Texas has shown that they can compete with the top teams in the country, but they’ve also succumbed to the play of lesser opponents.

There are just as many question marks off of the field as there are on it. Which team will show up on Saturday to remain in the Big 12 title race?

Confidence 1-10?

Patrick Conn, Staff Editor

This is a tough one to nail down. Just when you think you have this team pegged, they fall back. When they began the season with a 2-0 record, many thought that the Longhorns were on the rise after a disappointing 2019 season. This year has been extremely inconsistent. Win two, lose two, win two. Are they about to lose two more? Let’s hope they can figure it out against the best total defense in the Big 12 Conference.

Confidence Level: 3

Cami Griffin, Senior Staff Contributor

I chose a confidence level of 5 here because I truly feel as if this game can go either way. West Virginia has a solid defense — the best overall defensive unit in the conference — but Texas also deploys the highest scoring offense. If it weren’t for Texas’ recent inconsistency issues, i’d have this score as high as an 8 here. However, you truly cannot predict a team led by head coach Tom Herman anymore.

Confidence Level: 5

Griffin McVeigh, Staff Contributor

It has been a long time since Tom Herman has had the ability to put quality back-to-back games together in one season. Last week’s win over Oklahoma State was great and could be seen as a momentum boost for the rest of the season. West Virginia has had their up and downs as well. Nobody knows which team will show up on either side. I am banking on Texas since they are at home in this one.

Confidence Level: 6

The fans haven’t been overly confident either. According to a recent Twitter poll, the fanbase had no idea whether or not to trust Herman’s team against West Virginia.

Colts vs. Lions: Staff picks and predictions for Week 8

How the Colts Wire staff sees Week 8 shaking out.

The Indianapolis Colts (4-2) and Detroit Lions (3-3) are just about set to square off in a Week 8 matchup at Ford Field on Sunday afternoon.

While Vegas has the Colts sitting as road favorites in this matchup, the experts around the league are split on who will come out with a win.

Here’s how the Colts Wire staff feels the game will shake out in Week 8:

Kevin Hickey (@KevinHickey11): Colts 24, Lions 23

This will be a huge test for the Colts. They are coming out of the bye week. They are seeing the return of wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and linebacker Darius Leonard. But they are also facing the best quarterback on their schedule to this point in Matthew Stafford.

This will be the perfect game to get the ground attack going as the Lions are allowing 131.8 yards per game, 4.5 yards per carry and their nine touchdowns allowed are tied for the sixth-most. This is the Jonathan Taylor week.

The Colts will also be tested with Kenny Golladay, who continues to make spectacular plays without getting separation. He will be a big test for Xavier Rhodes and Rock Ya-Sin.

This should be a close matchup and one that comes down to the wire, but the Colts get teh edge coming off of the bye week and getting Leonard back in the mix on defense.

Sam Sinclair (@samsinclair96): Colts 24, Lions 20

On paper, this would seem like a matchup the Colts should have no trouble with, but the Lions are playing their best football right now, winners in three of their last four, including a come-from-behind win in Atlanta last week.

One of Indianapolis’ biggest surprises this season has been the play of Xavier Rhodes, who has allowed the third-lowest passer rating this season at 46. This week, he gets arguably his toughest assignment with Kenny Golladay, who’s seventh in the NFL in contested catch rate, at 54%. On offense, I would look for the Colts to keep attacking through the air.

Detroit’s pass rush is almost non-existent, as they’re last in the NFL in pressure percentage on 1st and 2nd down, at only 16%. So look for Indianapolis to possibly take some shots downfield on early downs.

Las Vegas currently has this at -2.5 for Indianapolis but started it at -3. I feel this game will be close throughout and rather lower scoring. The Lions will put up a sneaky tough task at home, but I will take the Colts.

Colts vs. Bengals: Staff picks and predictions for Week 6

How the Colts Wire staff sees the game shaking out.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-2) are set to host the Cincinnati Bengals (1-3-1) at Lucas Oil Stadium for a Week 6 matchup.

As heavy favorites in the eyes of Vegas and the experts around the league, the Colts should come away with this win. Before their Week 7 bye, Indy is hoping to head into the week off with a 4-2 record.

Here’s how the Colts Wire staff sees the Week 6 game shaking out:

Kevin Hickey (@KevinHickey11): Colts 26, Bengals 18

Following the Week 5 loss to the Browns, the Colts will be getting back on track with a win at home against the Bengals. With the all-clear from the league following a COVID-19 scare, the Colts can focus on getting back into the win column before the bye week.

The Bengals have struggled to finish games this season even though rookie quarterback Joe Burrow has shown a lot of promise. Allowing the most sacks (22) and the most pressures (95) through five games, the Colts should have their way with the Bengals offensive line.

This is a prime opportunity for the run game to get going. The Bengals are allowing the third-highest yards per carry (5.3) and rushing yards per game (159.0) to opposing offenses.

Burrow has been impressive, but the pressure will be enough for the Colts to come away with this win easily at home.

Sam Sinclair (@samsinclair96): Colts 26, Bengals 14

After all the Friday craziness, the Indianapolis Colts will play football Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. In a matchup of two teams separated by less than 100 miles, the Colts and Bengals are 100s of miles away in their state as a franchise.

The 1-3-1 Bengals come in off an embarrassing loss to their divisional rival Baltimore Ravens 27-3. The only thing Cincinnati has is their young star QB, Joe Burrow, who should be fun to watch on Sunday.

This needs to be the week the Colts get back to running the ball well. Cincinnati is near the bottom of the league in rush defense, while quietly have a stingy pass defense.

The Bengals have given up 22 sacks to opponents in their first five games, not a good look for Joe Burrow as he faces DeForest Buckner and Justin Houston.

As with the Vikings and Jets games, the Colts were expected to come out and handle their business, and they did so. That will be the expectation this week, and I think they will do that.

John Alfieri (@alfierijohn): Colts 31, Bengals 17

The Colts get back on track after a lackluster performance last week against Cleveland and a COVID-19 scare on Friday. This game should be the perfect game for Philip Rivers and company to rebound and get this team going in the right direction.

Expect Jonathan Taylor to have a big day as Cincinnati is allowing 5.3 yards per carry. Establishing the run will be very important, especially because the Colts have failed to do so in recent weeks.

Overall this should be a game where the Colts get in front and stay in front. Getting after Joe Burrow will be key as the rookie is still getting his feet wet in the league. One thing you can’t doubt, is that the Heisman winner can sling it.

With a favorable stretch of the schedule coming up, the Colts have a real opportunity to put together some wins before they host tougher opponents down the road.

[vertical-gallery id=51845]

Colts vs. Browns: Staff picks and predictions in Week 5

Colts Wire staff makes their picks.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-1) and Cleveland Browns (3-1) are preparing for a Week 5 matchup at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday in what should be a tightly contested bout.

The Colts are now one-point underdogs for the matchup, according to Vegas, and the experts are pretty split on who will win this game. The Colts will be without two key starters while the Browns look pretty healthy.

Here’s how the Colts Wire staff sees this game coming out:

Kevin Hickey (@KevinHickey11): Browns 26, Colts 24

The line on this game is extremely small for good reason. These two teams are very similar in wanting to run the ball while the Colts have a better defense. However, it’s going to come down to injuries.

The Colts will be without starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo and linebacker Darius Leonard. Even the biggest of optimists have to be concerned with Le’Raven Clark matching up against Myles Garrett, even if the Colts send help his way.

The problem is the offense hasn’t shown it is capable of running away with a game. If the Browns control the tempo, it may be hard for the Colts to establish their gameplan.

The Browns have shown they can control the line of scrimmage on offense, which will be the priority on Sunday. The Colts’ front seven is strong, maybe strong enough to withstand the absence of Leonard. But it may be enough to just keep the Browns in the game long enough for them to grab a win.

It’s going to be close and I won’t be surprised if Indy comes out with a win but with the injuries hitting key spots, the Browns come out with a close one.

Sam Sinclair (@samsinclair96): Browns 27, Colts 24

After pulling off an impressive road victory in Chicago last week, the Indianapolis Colts head to Cleveland to face the Cleveland Browns in a battle of 3-1 teams.

This week’s game should be a bigger task for the defense than any game so far this year. Cleveland averages 31 points per game and is first in the NFL in rushing yards per game with over 200 a game.

The Browns defense isn’t much to be talked about though. Cleveland is near the bottom of the league in every defensive category, but they’re tops in takeaways this season with 10. So ball security will be a top priority for Indianapolis this week.

With the Colts missing Darius Leonard and Anthony Castonzo this week, this game just became a lot harder. In a game that could determine seeding in the AFC playoff picture in December, I’m going to take the Browns in this one.

John Alfieri (@alfierijohn): Browns 28, Colts 17

This is a game that will be tough for the Colts as they take the field without LT Anthony Castonzo and LB Darius Leonard. Not being able to stick Castonzo on Myles Garrett will be a challenge as the Colts try to keep Philip Rivers safe.

Another concern is coverage. Who will be on Odell? Who is the No. 1 corner for this team? That matters when you go against a receiver like OBJ. Not to mention, the Browns have other threats too.

This game should remain close in the first half as the Colts try to establish the run like they failed to last week. Eventually, the Browns should pull away based on the pure level of talent they possess on both sides of the ball. This game is just full of bad matchups across the board for Indy.
