Texas Longhorns vs. West Virginia: Confidence level and staff predictions

Longhorns Wire staff members express their confidence level ahead of Texas’ critical matchup with West Virginia on Saturday.

Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

After wearing white jerseys for the last three games, the Longhorns will get back to wearing their traditional burnt orange on Saturday. They have won two in a row in white since breaking out the throwbacks. The betting odds currently sit at (-6.5) in favor of Texas.

Game Predictions and X-Factor

When it comes down to this particular matchup, which defense do I trust more? The Longhorns are playing much better against the run recently but continue to struggle with giving up big plays and first downs. We saw the emergence of Joseph Ossai last week as he completely wrecked the Oklahoma State gameplan. When it comes to Texas’ offense, can they do enough to generate points on their own? Last week they scored just 14 points when asked to go the length of the field. Can the defense generate points from turnovers again? I’m not too sure.

Pound for pound in terms of overall talent, Texas should win this game by two scores. However, due to the inconsistency issues under Tom Herman, it’s nearly impossible to predict this outcome. It feels like a trap game after a thriller defeat of the No. 6 team in the nation with Oklahoma State. West Virginia has a solid defense, but I trust Texas’ offense more when the game is on the line.

As always in the Big 12, this game is going to come down to the two offenses. For Texas, we know what quarterback Sam Ehlinger is capable of, proving to be the best quarterback in the conference. The question will be can the Longhorns run the ball against West Virginia’s stout front seven? If the answer is yes, Texas wins the game. If not, Ehlinger will be forced to attempt to pull one out of his hat. West Virginia will escape Austin with another win if they’re able to force Ehlinger to rely on his arm.
