Blues at Hurricanes projected goalies

Jordan Binnington (21-19-3, 3.27 GAA, .893 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (13-4-0, 2.52 GAA, .903 SV%)

Binnington allowed 4 goals on 33 shots in a 4-1 loss at home against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, snapping a personal 3-game win streak. He is a solid 3-1-0 in February, but he has a so-so 3.25 GAA and .902 SV%.

Andersen was in the crease for the outdoor game against the Caps, stopping 24 of 25 shots in the victory, and he is 2-1-0 with a 2.68 GAA and .899 SV% in 3 starts this month.

Hurricanes backup Antti Raanta was in the crease for the 1syt meeting on Dec. 1 in St. Louis, stopping 12 of 15 shots before he was pulled after 2 periods in favor of rookie Pyotr Kochetkov, who ended up getting the win.

Blue at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Blues 2

Moneyline

The Hurricanes (-340) will cost you over 3 times your potential return, and that’s just way too much risk for not enough reward in a standalone NHL game.

AVOID.

Puck line/Against the spread

The HURRICANES -1.5 (-130) are a decent play laying the goal and a half, cashing on the puck line in the last 2 games. Carolina is also 6-4 in the last 10 games as a favorite on the puck line, and it covered the puck line in the 1st meeting with the Blues.

Over/Under

The UNDER 6.5 (-125) is the lean, ever so slightly.

While the Over has dominated for St. Louis lately, it has just 3 goals across the last 2 outings, as the offense is a shell of itself with several veterans recently traded.

The Over has also been the play lately for the Hurricanes, but the Under is 6-2 in the last 8 games when playing on 2 days of rest. Carolina will keep the output of St. Louis to a minimum, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a little bit of a hangover from the home side after all of the pomp and circumstance Saturday outdoors.

New Jersey Devils at St. Louis Blues odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Devils at Blues odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (35-13-5) visit the St. Louis Blues (25-25-3) Thursday at the Enterprise Center. Puck drop is slated for 9 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Devils vs. Blues odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

After a December stumble when they went 1-7-1, the Devils have rebounded and have been solid at both ends of the ice since going 11-2-1 in its last 14 games. New Jersey beat Columbus 3-2 on Tuesday.

The Blues are at home for their 3rd straight game, and they won the 1st 2 over Florida and Arizona. Those 2 wins came after 5 consecutive losses during which St. Louis coughed up 23 goals.

This is the 2nd meeting this season. St. Louis won 5-3 at New Jersey on Jan. 5

Devils at Blues projected goalies

Vitek Vanecek (23-5-3, 2.31 GAA, .916 SV%) vs. Jordan Binnington (20-18-2, 3.28 GAA, .892 SV%)

Vanecek has lost just once since Dec. 30, winning 11 of his last 12 starts. Over that span, the 27-year-old netminder has logged a .926 SV%.

Binnington defeated the Florida Panthers Tuesday, stopping 34 of 36 shots. He has won 4 of his last 6 starts at home.

Devils at Blues picks and predictions

Prediction

Devils 4, Blues 3

Moneyline

New Jersey has averaged 3.72 goals per game over their last 18 contests. The Devils are 6-1-2 in their last 9 games on the road, and Vanecek has been solid in backing a good group of blueliners.

Binnington has been inconsistent and so has the scoring production past the top line. In puck-possession numbers, St. Louis has had some huge nights against bad teams of late. And the Blues have been at a significant expected-goals deficit against better clubs.

BET THE DEVILS (-150).

Puck line/Against the spread

The Devils have played in a slew of close games lately.  And leading scorer C Jack Hughes is out with an upper-body injury. There’s some added risk in getting the visiting squad by with a 2-goal cushion. PASS.

Over/Under

In the last 14 series meetings held in St. Louis, the Over has gone 10-4. And that’s the lean here with a rolling Devils offense.

TAKE THE OVER 6.5 (-105).

Blues at Jets projected goalies

Jordan Binnington (18-17-3, 3.28 GAA, .891 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Connor Hellebuyck (23-15-1, 2.46 GAA, .923 SV%, 3 SO)

Binnington faced the Jets 3 times last season, going 1-1-1, allowing 10 goals on 112 shots, good for a 3.24 GAA and .911 SV%. In 17 road starts this season, Binnington is 9-7-1 and has allowed 56 goals on 518 shots, good for a 3.40 GAA and .892 SV%.

Blues at Jets picks and predictions

Prediction

Jets 4, Blues 1

Moneyline

PASS.

The Jets (-220) should win, but there is no need to risk more than 2 times your potential profit on the moneyline when Winnipeg should win by multiple goals. Bet the puck line or total instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET JETS -1.5 (-115).

Winnipeg is 7-0-1 vs. St. Louis in the last 8 meetings and is in a good spot to bounce back at home after an embarrassing loss vs. Philadelphia. The Jets have covered the puck line in 6 of their last 7 wins and should be able to take advantage of a Blues team on a 4-game skid. St. Louis has scored just 2 goals vs. Hellebuyck in 2 meetings this season and should struggle to score once again Monday.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6.5 (-135).

The Under is 4-0 in Winnipeg’s last 4 games after losing by 3 or more goals in its previous contest and 5-0 in the Jets’ last 5 vs. Central Division teams. The Jets have played low-scoring games vs. the Western Conference recently as the Under has hit in 9 of their last 10. Look for the Under to hit Monday as Hellebuyck dominates vs. St. Louis for the 3rd time this season.

St. Louis Blues at New Jersey Devils odds, picks and predictions

Blues at Devils projected goalies

Jordan Binnington (14-12-0, 3.21 GAA, .893 SV%) vs. Mac Blackwood (5-3-0, 3.05 GAA, .888 SV%)

Binnington started the Tuesday shootout win, allowing 5 goals on 25 shots and posted an SV% of only .800.

Blackwood last started in Monday’s 5-4 shootout loss vs. the  Carolina Hurricanes, a game in which he let up 4 goals on 47 shots and posted an SV% of .915.

Blues at Devils picks and predictions

Prediction

Devils 5, Blues 4

Moneyline

PASS.

The Devils should win this game, but it won’t be easy. New Jersey is 0-7 in their last 7 home games, but that is a streak that I doubt will continue. The struggling Blues seem like the perfect team for the Devils to end the home losing streak. The favorite is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings and the Devils open as the narrow favorite here. But it will cost you nearly twice your money.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET BLUES +1.5 (-150).

This is you best bet for this game. The Blues are a tough team that is very  competitive despite this being a down season by their standards, so never count this squad out. The Blues have owned this matchup as of late and combine that with the Devils recent struggles at home and this will be a matchup that St. Louis will keep close.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 6.5 (-110).

The Over is the stronger play because of the Blues’ recent history, but the Under is stronger for the Devils. The Over is 4-1 in the Blues last 5 games playing on 1 day of rest, but the under is 5-1 in the Devil’s last 6 games vs. the Central Division. I lean toward the Over since the Devils have been playing very poorly at home and are playing the 2nd game of a back-to-back and fatigue may be a factor.

Winnipeg Jets at St. Louis Blues odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Winnipeg Jets at St. Louis Blues odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Winnipeg Jets (16-7-1) and St. Louis Blues (12-14-0) meet Thursday at Enterprise Center in St. Louis. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Jets vs. Blues odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Jets have won 5 of their last 6 games and have rolling up some huge offensive totals along the way. Winnipeg has scored 5 or more goals in 5 of the last 6 games, with the outlier a 4-1 loss against the last-place Columbus Blue Jackets of all teams.

The Blues have been involved in some high-scoring tilts lately, too. St. Louis is coming off a 7-4 win on the road against the New York Islanders Tuesday, and it was pounded by a combined 12-6 score in the 2 prior games against the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jets at Blues projected goalies

Connor Hellebuyck (13-5-1, 2.26 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Jordan Binnington (9-11-0, 3.42 GAA, .889 SV%, 1 SO)

Hellebuyck enters on a 5-start win streak, and while the Winnipeg offense has been fire lately, he hasn’t needed the amazing offensive support. He has allowed a total of just 6 goals in the last 4 games, including a 5-0 shutout against the defending champ Colorado Avalanche on Nov. 29.

Hellebuyck also turned aside all 25 of the shots he faced Oct. 24 in a 4-0 home win against the Blues in the 1st meeting.

Binnington is in a nosedive, coughing up 4 or more goals in 5 of his last 6 starts, losing all 6 outings. “Binner” had won his previous 6 starts from Nov. 10-21, so he really has been the definitely of hot and cold this season.

Jets at Blues picks and predictions

Prediction

Jets 5, Blues 2

Moneyline

The JETS (-115) is a sharp value play on the road, as Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg offense has been on fire, while Binnington and the Blues (-105) defense has been an absolute train wreck.

St. Louis clubbed the Islanders Tuesday in the 2nd end of a back-to-back set in New York, and backup Thomas Greiss was no relief, allowing 4 goals. However, the Blues offense did go for 7 goals, but they won’t come close to that against the white-hot Hellebuyck.

Puck line/Against the spread

When the line was the Jets -1.5 (+185) it might have been worth a roll of the dice on the road to give you a chance to nearly double up. But when the line shifted to Jets +1.5 (-280), it’s a PASS.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-105) is the best play on the board, not just for this game, but for the entire NHL card.

Binnington and the Blues have stunk lately, and the Jets offense has been running amok, going for 28 total goals across the past 6 outings. There is an outside chance the Jets could take care of the Over on their own, or at least come pretty close to it with 5 or 6 goals. Slam the Over and don’t look back.

St. Louis Blues at New York Islanders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s St. Louis Blues at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The St. Louis Blues (11-14-0) wrap up a 3-game road trip against the New York Islanders (16-10-0) Tuesday at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Blues vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Blues were tripped up 6-4 on the road against the New York Rangers Monday night, losing for the 4th consecutive game. Even worse, St. Louis has allowed exactly 6 goals in each of the previous 3 outings, while yielding 4 or more goals in 7 consecutive contests.

The Islanders halted a 2-game losing skid, blanked the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 3-0 on Sunday behind Semyon Varlamov. New York has won 4 of its last 5 games at home, including a pair of shutouts.

Blues at Islanders projected goalies

Thomas Greiss (2-3-0, 3.57 GAA, .907 SV%) vs. Ilya Sorokin (10-7-0, 2.17 GAA, .932 SV%, 2 SO)

Greiss came on in relief Saturday, turning aside 19 of the 20 shots he faced in Pittsburgh, but the damage was already done after Jordan Binnington allowed 4 goals on 17 shots in just over 1 period.

Sorokin was on the short end of a 4-1 loss against Nashville Friday, but he did his part. The goalie conceded just 2 goals on 21 shots, but the team produced just 1 goal of support, while the Preds tacked on 2 empty-net goals.

Blues at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 4, Blues 2

Moneyline

The ISLANDERS (-155) is a moderate favorite worth playing, and it’s a bit surprising the line is so low given the recent struggles of the Blues (+135).

St. Louis just played Monday, so that’s working against it, and the Blues have coughed up 6 goals in each of the last 3 games. There is nothing to like about St. Louis, especially working on no rest.

Puck line/Against the spread

The ISLANDERS -1.5 (+145) puck line is worth playing lightly. The Blues +1.5 (-190) have dropped 4 in a row, and it has lost by 2 or more goals in 6 of the last 7 games.

If you like New York to win, you should like it to win by at least 2 goals here, especially against former Islanders backstop Greiss.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-125) is worth playing, as the Blues have really struggled defensively and in between the pipes. St. Louis has allowed 4 or more goals in each of the last 7 games, while its penalty kill ranks 2nd-to-last in the NHL at 66.7%.

The Islanders are just so-so on the man advantage, but it should be able to score plenty against the skidding Blues.

The Over is 6-0 in the last 6 road games for the Blues, and 18-7-2 in the last 27 games when playing on no rest.

The Avalanche come in on a 4-game winning streak with their last loss coming Oct.29. A 5-4 decision to the Islanders. Since then, Colorado has scored at least 4 goals in each of its victories. They will look to continue the offense in this game against St. Louis.

Binnington saved 34 of 36 shots in his last start against the Golden Knights on Saturday. He has saved 61 shots while allowing just 5 goals in his past 2 starts.

Blues at Avalanche picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 4, Blues 2

Moneyline

PASS.

While the ML is not too out of order, it is just a bit too high on the Avalanche which is the team to bet here.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET COLORADO AVALANCHE -1.5 (+115).

With Georgiev in net, the Avalanche are the clear better team. They have not lost since Oct. 29 and in this time, they also have not won by less than 2 goals. Take Colorado -1.5 (+115) as my favorite play.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 6.5 (-135).

The Avalanche have been scoring in bunches lately. Since Oct. 29, they have not scored less than 4 goals in any game. But the Blues, although winning have been limited in their scoring. With Georgiev and his 2.66 GAA in net, I look for St. Louis to have some trouble scoring. The Avalanche will get to 4 but I see the Blues only getting to 2. Which leads me to favoring the Under.

St. Louis Blues at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s St. Louis Blues at Philadelphia Flyers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The St. Louis Blues (3-7-0) clash with the Philadelphia Flyers (6-3-2) Tuesday at Wells Fargo Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Blues vs. Flyers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Blues dropped their 7th game in a row Monday against the Boston Bruins (3-1), but there were some positives to take out of it. They’ve been plagued by turnovers and spotty defensive work, and they were undone by 2 power-play goals while failing to come through on 3 power plays of their own. It was a close game until the end, and they have the solace of hanging with a tough team on the road.

Philadelphia is another tough matchup as it’s 3-1-1 on home ice. The Flyers have allowed 28 goals and scored 28 goals – both the fewest in the Metropolitan Division. They ended a 3-game skid with a 2-1 victory at the Ottawa Senators Saturday.

Blues at Flyers projected goalies

Thomas Greiss (0-2-0, 3.28 GAA, .915 SV%, 0 SO) vs. Carter Hart (6-0-2, 1.97 GAA, .946 SV%, 0 SO)

Greiss was great in his first start of the season against the Winnipeg Jets, stopping 39 of 42 shots, but was pummeled by the Nashville Predators in his next turn, allowing 5 goals on 41 shots. He came on in relief duty 8 days ago and stopped all 11 shots he saw against the Los Angeles Kings. Greiss beat the Flyers last season, stopping 32 of 34 shots.

What a start to the season by Hart, who is 3rd in GAA and 2nd in SV % in the league. He has stopped 68 of the 70 shots he has faced over his last 2 starts. At 24 years old, he has really come into his own as he has yet to be defeated in regulation.

Blues at Flyers picks and predictions

Prediction

Blues 3, Flyers 2

Moneyline

All streaks must come to an end, and while I’m not rushing out to throw money at the Blues making the playoffs, I think they jell together enough to sneak by in this one — possibly in overtime. There’s too much talent on this team to continue its dysfunction.

Take the BLUES (-130).

Puck line/Against the spread

The Flyers +1.5 (-220) is well out of my price range, and if St. Louis can get a lead, they have a good shot at an empty-netter.

PASS.

Over/Under

This number is too high. St. Louis is 5-4-1 O/U, and Philadelphia is just 5-6-0. St. Louis has a league-worst 22 goals on the season, and Philly is just above them with 28. Both sides have had solid goaltending. I’ll be pretty happy to take the UNDER 6.5 (-120).

New York Islanders at St. Louis Blues odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s New York Islanders at St. Louis Blues odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders (6-4-0) take a trip to the Gateway City to visit the St. Louis Blues (3-5-0) in Thursday night NHL action. Puck drop from Enterprise Center is set for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Islanders vs. Blues odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Islanders are hot coming into this game on a 4-game winning streak. Their latest win came in a 3-1 outing vs. the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. In that outing the Islanders led in shots and penalty minutes, but fell behind in hits and faceoffs won.

The Blues are on a terrible cold streak, losing their last 5 in a row. Their most recent loss came in a 5-2 outing vs. the Los Angeles Kings on Halloween night. In that loss the Blues led in faceoffs won, hits, and penalty minutes, but lost the battle for shots and saves.

Islanders at Blues projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (4-3-0, 2.04 GAA, .935 SV%) vs. Jordan Bennington (3-3-0, 3.28 GAA, .882 SV%)

Sorokin has started in 4 of the Islanders’ 6 wins and has allowed 14 total goals on 217 shot attempts with over 412 minutes spent on the ice.

Bennington is the Blues’ premier goalie and has started in 6 of their 8 games and started in all 3 of their wins. He has allowed 18 total goals on 153 shot attempts.

Islanders at Blues picks and predictions

Prediction

Blues 4, Islanders 3

Moneyline

LEAN BLUES -117

This is by far the riskiest bet in this game. With the Blues being on a 5 game losing streak and the Islanders being on a 4-game winning streak there is a good amount of risk attached with this bet. I am picking the Blues mostly because I don’t see this cold streak continuing and I think they get a big win at home to revitalize the locker room.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET ISLANDERS +1.5 (-260)

This is your best bet in this game,  but it will cost you. The Islanders are a solid team that is on a very hot streak to this point. Whether the Islanders win or lose they should be able to make this game close and cover the spread against a Blues team that has been struggling over the last week or so.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 5.5 (-140)

This bet has a fair amount of risk involved. Sorokin does not allow many goals and when you look at his goals allowed per game compared to Bennington’s, the averages would tell you that the under is actually safer. I disagree, however, and believe the Blues will need to be able to score goals if they want to win this game and in their losses this season the Islanders have always allowed 3+ goals to be scored on them.

Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues odds and lines, with NHL expert picks and predictions.

The Los Angeles Kings (5-5-0) and St. Louis Blues (3-4-0) meet Monday. Puck drop from Enterprise Center is at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Kings vs. Blues odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Los Angeles is on the road after a 2-1-0 home stand. The Kings last played Saturday when they downed the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2. Two games back, L.A. was roughed up in a 6-4 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. That’s been the club’s main issue in its first 10 games: the Kings rank 29th in the NHL, giving up 4.10 goals per game.

The Blues allowed 7 goals of their own in their last game, a 7-4 setback against the Montreal Canadiens Saturday. St. Louis has allowed 20 goals in its current 4-game losing skid.

Kings at Blues projected goalies

Jonathan Quick (2-4-0, 3.81 GAA, .878 SV%) vs. Jordan Binnington (3-2-1, 2.60 GAA, .903 SV%)

Quick has allowed 4 or more goals in 4 of his 6 starts. He logged a .942 SV% against St. Louis last season and heads into this start off of 3 days’ rest.

Binnington toted a .936 SV% into Saturday’s turn against Montreal and was then undone by 4 even-strength goals and 2 powerplay goals in a clunker. He notched a .929 SV% against the Kings last season and does have a history of being relatively sharp in early-season games.

Kings at Blues picks and predictions

Prediction

Kings 4, Blues 3

Moneyline

The Kings’ even-strength possession and faceoff numbers have been solid, and they’ve gone 3-for-10 on the powerplay over the last 2 games. L.A. has been quite good in the giveaway/takeaway exchange, blocks a lot of shots and has created more high-danger chances per game than its host.

The lean is on the Kings, but the pricing here may not be much of a value. Consider a line watch: PLAY THE KINGS +(100) only on a partial-unit wager. Look for a better plus return, such as +108 or better, for some significant leverage.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Kings are the lean, but the price here is not enticing. PASS.

Over/Under

The 52-cent gulf here sort of says to me, “Don’t bet on this on either side.” I hereby reply, “Okay, no problem.”

The Over is the lean if you can get a 5.5 at -125. Otherwise, PASS.
