5 South Carolina players to watch vs. Georgia

Top-5 South Carolina players as Gamecocks travel to Athens…

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) will open the SEC season this Saturday versus the South Carolina Gamecocks (1-1) in Sanford Stadium.

Georgia showed improvement in each phase in Week 2 with a 45-3 win over Ball State. With two non-Power Five tune-up games under their belt, the Bulldogs will face their first test of the season against former Georgia assistant Shane Beamer and quarterback Spencer Rattler.

South Carolina is coming off of a 42-17 win over Furman. No. 21 North Carolina topped the Gamecocks 31-17 in Week 1.

Georgia has controlled the matchup easily over the last three matchups, outscoring South Carolina 143-36.

Here’s five key Gamecocks to watch versus Georgia:

Pair of key South Carolina defenders out for the season

South Carolina linebacker Mohamed Kaba, and pass rusher Jordan Strachan are expected to miss the remainder of the 2022 college football season.

The South Carolina defense lost two critical players to injury during its SEC opening game at Arkansas. The Gamecocks lost linebacker Mohamed Kaba, who has eight tackles this season and 32 tackles last season, for the 2022 college football season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Additionally, South Carolina lost senior pass rusher Jordan Strachan for the season due to a torn ACL. Strachan, who previously transferred from Georgia State, has 10 tackles and a sack this year.

The Gamecocks will look to bounce back in Week 3 as they host the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs. However, South Carolina will be without both Strachan and Kaba for the remainder of the season. It is a tough blow for coach Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks.

Georgia is dealing with some injuries heading into the South Carolina game as well. The Bulldogs are banged up at the wide receiver position.

South Carolina’s depth will be tested on Sept. 17 against Georgia. The Bulldogs have one of the most talented teams in the country, but have not played on the road yet during the 2022 season.

Georgia vs South Carolina: Sahvir Wheeler makes UGA history in loss

Sahvir Wheeler made Georgia basketball history in the South Carolina vs UGA basketball game.

Despite Georgia guard Sahvir Wheeler setting Georgia’s single season record for assists, the South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Bulldogs by a score of 91-70 on Saturday in Athens.

Georgia moves to 14-10 (7-10 SEC) following the game, which marks the Bulldogs’ 10th straight loss to the Gamecocks.

“I did a poor job letting these guys know the level of fight and toughness that would be needed in this game,” head coach Tom Crean said. “When no one is in the fight, that falls back to the head coach.”

Wheeler recorded five assists on Saturday, giving him 170 on the season. That moves him past Pertha Robinson (169, 1994-95 season) for the most assists in a single season in UGA history.

Aside from Wheeler making UGA history, it was a day to forget for the sophomore guard out of Houston, Texas. Wheeler shot just 2-of-13, including 0-for-4 from three. He finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 7 turnovers.

Georgia led South Carolina for a short period midway through the first half.  South Carolina quickly put an end to that via a 13-0. The Gamecocks would never look back and led the entire second half.

The Bulldogs return to the hardwood next Saturday against Alabama in Athens. Tipoff is set for 2pm.
