South Carolina came away with a 47-21 bounce-back win vs. the Furman Paladins after losing 31-17 to the North Carolina Tar Heels in Week 1. The Gamecocks have had a very 1-dimensional offense to start the year, as their passing game has proven to be their go-to. QB Spencer Rattler has completed 83% of his passes (55 of 66) for 698 yards and 3 TDs, but the ground game has not seen much production. RB Dakereon Joyner is the team’s leading rusher with 65 yards and 2 TDs on 23 carries.

Georgia has started its season with 2 blowout wins, 48-7 vs. Tennessee-Martin and 45-3 over Ball State last week. Georgia has also been a very pass-heavy squad to start the season as QB Carson Beck has completed 72% of his passes (44 of 61) for 577 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT. The story for Georgia has been its defense which has allowed only 10 total points in 2 games.

Georgia should be able to pick up the win, but as a (-10000) favorite the line is far too risky. Bet on the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

LEAN SOUTH CAROLINA +27.5 (-105).

Games with 2 SEC opponents are always unpredictable, but I believe the Gamecocks will be able to stay within 4 TDs here. I am worried about how Beck will perform in the 1st true test in his collegiate career, which makes me feel even more comfortable about SC covering here. Look for Rattler to generate offense by connecting with his favorite target, WR Xavier Legette.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 54.5 (-110).

Georgia’s defense has been stout to start the season and expect to see more of the same here. The Gamecocks don’t have a rushing attack to keep the Bulldogs’ defense honest so they will be able to play with a lot of DBs and a very light box. Georgia will be able to score, but their lack of a run game is also a concern for me. Rattler was sacked 9 times in the season opening loss vs. UNC, so Georgia’s defense should be able to create pressure all game. I simply don’t think South Carolina’s offense will be able to generate enough points to hit the Over.

The Tar Heels look to avenge a 38-21 setback on Dec. 30, 2021, in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against the Gamecocks. In fact, each of the past 3 meetings in this border state rivalry have been played in Charlotte since 2015, with the Gamecocks winning a regular-season meeting Sept. 3, 2015, and the bowl game. UNC won 24-20 on Aug. 31, 2019, in the opener that season.

North Carolina QB Drake Maye begins his 2nd season under center, and he looks to build upon his outstanding 2022 campaign which had some whispering about the Heisman Trophy. He completed 66.2% of his passes for 4,321 yards, 38 TDs and 7 INTs, while also running for 698 yards and 7 scores.

South Carolina has a pretty good field general, too. QB Spencer Rattler also completed 66.2% of his attempts for 3,026 yards, 18 TDs and 12 INTs, while being sacked 31 times. He isn’t nearly as much of a threat as Maye in the run game, although he did sneak into the end zone on 3 occasions, and his rushing numbers were dented by all of the sacks.

Moneyline

NORTH CAROLINA (-140) is worth playing in this revenge game, especially with Maye at the helm. While he’ll have to make his way into the 2023 season without last season’s leading receiver, WR Josh Downs, the cupboard is anything but bare in Chapel Hill, as far as skill position players are concerned.

Unfortunately for Maye, WR Tez Walker, who transferred in from Kent State, will not play Saturday, as UNC awaits an NCAA ruling on his eligibility for 2023.

Still, Maye will do enough with his arm, and his feet, to be the difference maker in this game. I like Rattler, but his offensive line is a concern for me.

Against the spread

NORTH CAROLINA -2.5 (-110) is the lean, especially if it remains under a flat 3. I would have liked to see more firepower with Walker as a downfield threat, but even without the pass catcher, I think the Heels have more than enough on offense to win a high-scoring game.

Over/Under

OVER 64.5 (-110) might be the best play on the board.

UNC wasn’t exactly efficient on defense, and the offense was forced into several high-scoring games, especially early in the 2022 campaign. Remember that insane 63-61 win at Appalachian State last September? The Heels scored 31 or more points in 9 of their 1st 10 games last season, and there is no reason to believe it won’t be all gas and no brakes again in 2023.

After a strong start to his tenure in 2021, coach Shane Beamer has had an even better season in 2022 for the Gamecocks. South Carolina is in a 2nd straight bowl game with transfer QB Spencer Rattler leading the offense. Few Gamecocks will be unable to play in this game other than their top 2 TE, and this gives them an advantage over the Irish who will be without star TE Michael Mayer.

Notre Dame will not only be without Mayer as starting QB Drew Pine has decided to transfer and will not play. The Irish are forced to turn to QB Tyler Buchner, who began 2022 as their starter but was sidelined by a shoulder injury that required surgery. He will be rusty and, with Mayer out, will have few options on the offensive side to count on in this game.

The Irish will struggle to keep up their end of the bargain with their missing weapon, and the defense for the Irish is good and will be able to hold down the Gamecocks. Both teams scoring in the low 20s should be expected, and we’re more likely to see the UNDER 50.5 (-109) connect than we are to see Buchner knock off the rust after missing 4 months.

The Gamecocks pulled off the giant upset over then-No. 5 Tennessee last weekend, winning 63-38 as a 23.5-point underdog. South Carolina would love to spoil the CFP hopes of another rival this weekend, but it is a much taller order on the road.

Clemson leads the all-time series 72-42-4, including victories in each of the past 7 meetings. In fact, while this is an intense rivalry, lately, it hasn’t even been close. The Tigers won 30-0 in Columbia last season, and it has taken each of the past 5 in the series by at least 21 points.

The Tigers are ranked No. 7 in the College Football Playoff rankings, and need a miracle to work their way into the top 4. It helped that South Carolina won last week against Tennessee, a team Clemson was competing with for a spot in the CFP, but it hurts that North Carolina lost to NC State Friday. A win by Clemson over UNC in the ACC Championship Game won’t look nearly as impressive now.

Clemson (-600) will cost 6 times the potential return, and that’s way too expensive in a rivalry game. Yes, the Tigers have had their way with the Gamecocks in recent years, but South Carolina is flying high and brimming with confidence after a giant win against Tennessee last weekend.

AVOID.

Against the spread

SOUTH CAROLINA +14.5 (-112) is a good play as long as this line stays at or above two touchdowns.

In previous years, Clemson -14.5 would seem like a gift as it has dusted South Carolina by an average of 31.8 points per game in the past 5 meetings. But USC has a lot of momentum after paddling Tennessee at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia last weekend.

The Gamecocks might not be able to get all the way over the hump to topple the Tigers, but they should be able to keep it within 2 TDs.

Over/Under

Play OVER 52.5 (-111), but don’t expect it to be easy.

Sure, South Carolina dropped 63 on Tennessee last weekend, but that’s an anomaly. The USC offense has been rather middling this season, posting 377.9 total yards per game to rank 78th in the nation, while running for just 129.5 yards per outing to check in 96th. The offense has scored 31.7 PPG to rank 42nd overall.

Clemson is also good, but not great, on offense, going for 34.7 PPG, while allowing just 20.0 PPG. The Tigers won’t get run over like the Vols last weekend, but we should still see a healthy score into the mid-50’s here. Just go lightly.
