Solomon Thomas named Jets’ nominee for Walter Payton award

For the second straight season, Jets defensive tackle Solomon Thomas was nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

The NFL announced Tuesday the 32 nominees, one from each team, for the 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. Defensive tackle Solomon Thomas was named the Jets’ nominee for the second straight year.

From the NFL’s official website: “The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is granted to the player who demonstrates outstanding contributions to society off-the-field while handling himself in an exemplary fashion in uniform.”

Thomas is co-founder and Board Chair of The Defensive Line, an organization designed to aid in the prevention of youth suicide. He has also taken part in many charitable organizations.

“I am truly honored and humbled to be nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award by the New York Jets for the second consecutive year,” said Thomas. “This recognition goes beyond football, reflecting the impact we can make off the field and impact others’ lives with our platform. It’s a privilege to be a part of this team and have a platform to positively impact others. Thank you to the Jets organization, the Tri-state community, my family, and my teammates for this incredible honor.”

The winner will be announced during NFL Honors on Thursday, February 8, the week before Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Each nominee will receive up to $55,000 for the charity of their choice and the winner receives an additional $250,000 donation.

2025 5-Star OT out of Florida places Texas A&M in his Top 10 program list

Needing a dose of future O-line talent, 2025 5-star offensive tackle Solomon Thomas has placed Texas A&M in his Top 10 program list.

Texas A&M’s 2025 recruiting class is bare in its current state. While head coach Jimbo Fisher’s future with the program is still uncertain depending on how the 2023 season wraps up, fan apathy has set in after several de-commitments in the 2024 cycle, including four-star WR Drelon Miller and four-star OT Weston Davis (committed to LSU) increased said apathy earlier last week.

While Miller may still be in the fold after taking an official visit to College Station this weekend, Davis’ flip to the Tigers stings even more due to the immense struggles A&M has dealt with on the offense line the past two seasons. While second-year O-line coach Steve Addazio deserves the bulk of the blame, an infusion of future talent is an absolute must.

Earlier this week, 2025, five-star offensive tackle Solomon Thomas out of Jacksonville, Florida, released his Top 10 program list, including Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina, Miami, LSU, Florida State, Florida, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.

According to 247Sports Composite rankings, Thomas is currently positioned as the 21st-ranked player in the cycle, the 4th-ranked offensive tackle, and the 3rd-ranked player in Florida. Standing at 6-3 278 pounds, Thomas’s size, strength, and footwork provide a wealth of position versatility if he switches to guard once he enters a collegiate program.

Bryce Young takes pair of hard hits during 1st NFL drive

Bryce Young got tested right away on Saturday, eating two big hits from the Jets defense during his first preseason drive.

Welcome to the NFL, kid.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young took the field on Saturday afternoon for his opening piece of NFL preseason action. Fittingly enough, the rookie and his much-debated 5-foot-10, 205-pound frame was tested right away, as he ate a pair of punishing hits from the New York Jets defense.

The first came off his very first throw, an 8-yard completion to wide receiver Adam Thielen. Defensive end Solomon Thomas, who sped by left tackle Ikem Ekwonu, got to Young with a, well, warm hug . . .

The second came on an incompletion later in the possession. After sailing a third-and-6 pass over the head of DJ Chark, Young took quite a pop from New York’s Jermaine Johnsonā€”who bursted through an opening in the middle of the Carolina offensive line.

The Panthers proceeded to punt away to button up the debut drive. Young finished the touch having completed two of his three attempts for 13 yards.

Clemson offers one of the top offensive line recruits in the 2025 class

Clemson has offered one of the best offensive line recruits in the 2025 class.

There hasn’t been much news on the recruiting trail for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers lately, but we have heard that Clemson has recently offered a top-tier offensive line recruit in the 2025 class.

Not only are the Gators getting a myriad of prep prospects on campus Saturday, but they’ve also got a big-time recruit stopping by Sunday as well.

Ahead of his trip to Gainesville, the 6-foot-4-inch, 290-pound lineman will stop to see the South Carolina Gamecocks on July 28 and the Miami Hurricanes on the following day, culminating a weekend jet-set schedule.

Solomon is ranked No. 28 overall and No. 4 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 31 and 4, respectively.

Alabama offers 2025 5-Star OT Solomon Thomas

2025 offensive tackle Solomon Thomas recently added an offer from the Alabama coaching staff. Thomas is a native of Jacksonville, Florida.

The Alabama coaching staff recently extended an offer to 2025 offensive tackle Solomon Thomas.

Thomas plays for Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida. He also competes on the school’s track and field team as a discus thrower.

At 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, Thomas will be a top target for numerous power-five programs. Up to this point, he has taken unofficial visits to Florida, Florida State, and Georgia.

Alabama has made it a priority to recruit offensive linemen from the Sunshine state in years past. Several players like JC Latham, Evan Neal, and Tyler Booker each played high school ball in Florida.

With Thomas having two years of high school remaining, he will have plenty of time to take visits and evaluate his options. Alabama will look to be a contender in Thomas’ recruitment.

Solomon Thomas staying with Jets, signing one-year deal

Solomon Thomas staying with Jets, signing one-year deal

While the Jets saw two defensive tackles leave in free agency — Sheldon Rankins to Houston, Nathan Shepherd to New Orleans — they were able to keep one of their free-agent tackles as they have re-signed Solomon Thomas to a one-year deal, per Tom Pelissero. The deal is worth up to $3.9 million.

Thomas played in all 17 games last season for the Jets, posting 26 tackles and two tackles for a loss. He’ll help provide some snaps and depth at the position as a good reserve piece.

Thomas was also the Jets’ nominee last season for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his charity work off the field. Certainly a good re-sign by the Jets.

The NFL released the 32 nominees (one for each team) for the 2022 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. The Jets’ nominee is defensive tackle Solomon Thomas.

The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field. The award was established in 1970. It was renamed in 1999 after the late Hall of Fame Chicago Bears running back, Walter Payton. Each team nominates one player who has had a significant positive impact on his community.

Representing the best of the NFL’s commitment to philanthropy and community impact, 32 players are selected as their team’s Man of the Year and become eligible to win the national award.

The winner of the award each year receives a $250,000 donated to the winner’s charity of choice. All other 31 nominees receive up to $40,000 donated to their charity of choice. All donations are courtesy of the NFL Foundation and Nationwide.

Thomas is co-founder of “The Defensive Line“, a non-profit organization designed to raise awareness and funds for mental health and suicide prevention work. He started the organization in honor of his late sister, Ella, who died by suicide in 2018.

In addition, Thomas has also worked with many other charities, hosted youth football camps and, for the holidays this season, “hosted a Turkey Giveaway in partnership with Interfaith Food Pantry Network in Morris Plains, NJ, and will host a Shop with a Jock Christmas shopping spree with Boys and Girls Club of Hoboken which will provide the kids with a gift card from Walmart.”

“It’s the highest of honors to be nominated for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for the New York Jets. I’m blessed to have a platform to impact lives and give back to help others,” said Thomas. “I believe it’s a duty of ours to uplift those fighting for better, a duty I will hold forever.”

Fans can also participate in the Charity Challenge, which helps support and promote team nominees. You can vote on Twitter using #WPMOYChallenge and then the last name or Twitter handle of your favorite nominee. So to vote for Thomas, tweet #WPMOYChallenge Thomas or #WPMOYChallenge @SollyThomas90. The winning nominee for the Challenge receives a $25,000 contribution to their charity of choice, $10,000 for second place and $5,000 for third place.

The winner of the award will be announced the week of the Super Bowl in February.
