Former Husker Adrian Martinez upsets No. 6 Oklahoma

A big upset in Norman, Oklahoma last night!

A former Nebraska Cornhusker, now Kansas State Wildcat, helped lead his team to one of the big upsets of the 2022 college football season on Saturday night. Quarterback Adrian Martinez led K-State to an upset win over the No. 6 ranked Oklahoma Sooners 41-34 in Norman. Martinez had 21 completions on 34 attempts for 234 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 21 times with 148 times and four touchdowns. When asked after the game, the former Cornhusker described the win as the most significant victory of his career.

“Without a doubt, this is No. 1,” Martinez said. “It’s still registering with me right now, just coming to that realization that it’s real, we played to the best of our abilities tonight, and we took it to them. It’s without a doubt my favorite game of all time.”

Below is a collection of social media reactions to the upset victory in Norman. Martinez will always have a connection to Husker Football but this moment is his alone. I’m happy to see someone who’s been through a lot be able to enjoy his time in the spotlight.

Social media reacts to Texas’ upset loss to Texas Tech

Safe to say the Texas faithful are not happy.

One step forward, two steps back for Texas football.

The Longhorns are making the trip home from Lubbock with a loss after a 37-34 overtime affair with Texas Tech.

Holding on to double-digit leads continues to be an issue for this Texas program. The Red Raiders took advantage of a sluggish second half from Texas to rally back from a 31-17 third-quarter deficit.

The teams traded field goals in the final 30 seconds of the game to force an overtime period tied at 34-34.

Overtime did not go as planned for Steve Sarkisian’s squad. Star running back Bijan Robinson fumbled the first carry of overtime to set Texas Tech up in a great position to win the game.

Texas Tech kicker Trey Wolff hit a 20-yard game-winning field goal as Texas drops to 2-2 on the season.

Here is how social media reacted to Texas’ overtime loss at the hands of Texas Tech. It is safe to say the Texas faithful are not happy.

Social media reacts to Nebraska’s loss to Oklahoma

And a report surfaces during the game that Nebraska has contacted Urban Meyer about the opening.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse… it gets worse. Nebraska was blown out by No. 6 Oklahoma 49-14 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. But, if it could have gone wrong for Cornhuskers, it did. Every issue this Nebraska team had shown through its first three games of the season showed up all at once against the Sooners. The helplessness of the offensive line to hold blocks, poorly timed penalties, an inability to tackle in the open field, and turnovers at the most inopportune moment. All of it led to Oklahoma scoring their highest total of road points in rivalry history. The previous record had been 48 points.

Oklahoma amassed 580 total yards of offense, with 268 yards coming through the air and 312 yards via the ground. Nebraska gained 327 yards on the day, with both starting quarterback Casey Thompson and backup Chubba Purdy splitting playing time. Purdy brings a different dimension to the offense with his running ability, given the woeful offensive line play through four games this season. It’ll be interesting to see if Purdy gets more opportunities on the field.

Eyes will continue to focus on the coaching search off the field, especially after Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reported during the game that Nebraska has already contacted Urban Meyer as the Husker athletic department tries to determine its list of candidates for its head coaching vacancy. This search sounds like it’s about to get very interesting.

Social Media Reacts to Nebraska’s loss to Georgia Southern

The Scott Frost era sunk to a new low on Saturday night.

Year after year. Game after game. The Nebraska Cornhuskers under the direction of head coach Scott Frost continue to make the same mistakes and as a result suffer the same consequences. Saturday night’s 45-42 loss to Georgia Southern may be the official end of Scott Frost’s tenure as head coach of Nebraska and his 31st loss was, in my opinion, the most painful loss in recent Nebraska memory. With a 42-38 lead late in the fourth, the Georgia Southern Eagles needed only 11 plays to go 75 yards in 2:29 for a game-winning score. Yet, you knew it was going to happen. You knew that in a tight game the Huskers would never be in a position to close out their opponent. It’s the hallmark of the last four-plus years. Never being situationally prepared and as a result, always being one step behind.

Frost’s buyout is currently $15 million and it cuts in half on October 1st but is it worth it to wait? As sports business reporter Darren Rovell tweeted “for a program that brings in $55 million annually, how damaging is each week of losses? I’d argue more than $7.5 million.” I can honestly say that when Scott Frost accepted the position of head football coach at his alma mater in December of 2017 I never thought this is where the program would be four years later. Where Athletic Director Trev Alberts goes from here is anyone’s guess.

More in-depth coverage is on the way but for now, here is a compilation of social media chatter surrounding the Nebraska Football program and its future.

Reacting to the first half of Nebraska v Northwestern

Thirty minutes of football are in the books!

One-half of football is in the books, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers are trailing the Northwestern Wildcats by a score of 17 to 14. We’ve gathered a variety of social media analysis and opinions from the first half of football in Dublin, Ireland.

So far, the Husker’s offense is outgaining the Wildcats 276 total yards to 273 yards and it’s the passing game leading the way. Starting quarterback Casey Thompson is currently 17 to 24 for 228 yards and one TD. However, the Cornhuskers running game is still looking to bust out as they currently have only 48 yards on 16 attempts for 3.0 yards per rush. In addition, the Husker defense struggled throughout the half unable to come away with a turnover or sack in the first 30 minutes.

Take a look below at first-half reactions and get ready. The second half of football is just around the corner.

Another week of practice underway for the Cornhuskers

Get a recap of the early August practice grind here!

Another week of practice is underway for the Nebraska Cornhuskers as they continue to prepare for the August 27th opener against the Northwestern Wildcats in Dubin, Ireland. Still, in the early days of the season, both offensive and defensive units are still installing the schemes and finalizing their depth charts.

The coaching staff, led by head coach Scott Frost, continues to say positive things about the team early in the campaign. On offense, Coordinator Mark Whipple discussed the progress of the quarterbacks on Monday, saying…

“We threw a lot at them… I probably made a mistake last week during camp… we had so much time, we were excited… I really wore them out. So I’m backing off a little.

We had a really good summer. Really good summer of just going over the things they can see themselves both in the throw game and the run game… I’ve seen the offense take a step forward.

You can see the difference now… they know when they’ve made a mistake. That’s when you see you’re making progress… we’ve limited mistakes and made some progress.”

You expect to hear good things about this team early in camp. However, the questions about the 2022 Cornhuskers will only be answered once we start the games on August 27th. So stay tuned to Cornhusker Wire as we’ll begin publishing our player profiles and position group breakdowns as the season-opening kickoff approaches.

Social Media reacts to Charlotte’s trade for McGowens

Social media has some thoughts about Bryce McGowens’ selection in the NBA Draft!!

The social media world is discussing the 2022 NBA Draft and the selection of Husker’s guard Bryce McGowens. The Minnesota Timberwolves selected McGowens with the 40th pick of the second round. A draft-day trade though is sending the South Carolina native to Charlotte to play for Michael Jordan and the Hornets. He’ll join first-round picks Jalen Duren from Memphis, and Mark Williams from Duke as a member of the rookie class. Charlotte currently does not have a head coach after Golden State Assitant Kenny Atkinson withdrew from the position shortly after accepting it. Recently former Suns, Knicks, Lakers, and Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni met with Jordan just the other day and is seen as one of the front runners for the position.

There was no shortage of reactions on Twitter to the selection, and we hear at Cornhusker Wire have taken a sample of the best and listed them below.

Social media reacts to Texas baseball’s comeback win over ECU

Dylan Campbell’s clutch walk-off has social media buzzing.

The Longhorns came all the way back from down 7-2 to come out with a 9-8 win over East Carolina.

Home runs off the bat of Douglas Hodo and Skyler Messinger tied the ballgame in the bottom of the eighth, setting the stage for Texas outfielder Dylan Campbell’s heroics.

The sophomore ripped out the hearts of the purple and gold faithful with a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth and a walk-off single in the ninth.

Campbell has been one of Texas’ best hitters down the stretch this season and came through when the Horns needed him most.

Texas and East Carolina will face off again tomorrow with a trip to Omaha on the line. Expect Texas to empty the tank from a bullpen perspective. David Pierce said in his postgame presser that every pitcher would be available if needed.

Here is how social media reacted to Texas’ miraculous comeback victory.
