Report: 49ers finalizing deal with former Seahawk Ziggy Ansah

After suffering two brutal injuries to key defensive linemen on Sunday, the 49ers are working to sign former Seattle Seahawk Ziggy Ansah.

Once again, the Seattle Seahawks will be facing one of their former players dressed in the red and gold of their biggest rival, the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported early Monday morning that defensive end Ziggy Ansah, who was a free agent entering the 2020 season, would be meeting with the 49ers after the team suffered likely season-ending injuries to defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas on Sunday.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN confirmed the news, reporting that the 49ers are finalizing a one-year deal with Ansah that is expected to be completed this week.

Ansah previously met with the 49ers just one week ago, but the two sides could not agree on a deal. Now, however, the team’s pass-rushing depth is suddenly much thinner.

As a member of the Seahawks in 2019, Ansah defended two passes, forced (and recovered) two fumbles, and had eight quarterback hits with two and a half sacks.

Signing Adrian Peterson makes sense for both the Lions and the RB

The Detroit Lions are signing Adrian Peterson to a one-year deal and it makes a lot of sense for both the team and the player.

[jwplayer d1t5oEJM-ThvAeFxT]

The Detroit Lions are signing running back Adrian Peterson to a 1-year contract and this is a deal that makes sense for both sides for a multitude of reasons.

Let’s take a look at why this deal likely happened so quickly.

The most glaring reason is the Lions injury history at the position. Starter Kerryon Johnson has not made it through either of his two NFL seasons without having to be placed on injured reserve. Expected co-starter rookie D’Andre Swift has been banged up in training camp and missed two weeks of valuable experience.

It’s not ideal, we’ll say that,” offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said of Swift missing time. “There’s a lot on these rookies’ plates right now just in terms of everything’s new for them. Obviously, he’s trying to pick up a whole new offense and we did not have the offseason… It’s one thing to see them on paper, it’s one thing to see them on tape, but it’s another thing to go out there and actually execute what you’re supposed to execute, make the decisions that you’re supposed to make at a quick level, and he’s missing all those different reps.”

As a 13 year veteran, Peterson can help Swift get up to speed with the playbook, while also providing the Lions with insurance in the health department. Peterson has only missed one game due to injury in the last two seasons and rushed for 898 yards in 2019 and 1,042 yards in 2018.

Peterson is also a terrific scheme fit, which should be no surprise after he began his NFL career playing four years (2007-10) under Bevell in Minnesota. Peterson can run between the tackles, catch passes out of the backfield, and is one of the best in the NFL as selling play action — something Matthew Stafford also excels at and is a staple in the Lions scheme.

At age 35, Peterson’s days of being a workhorse back are likely behind him – he was comfortable in a complementary role last season in Washington — and with the Lions taking a running back by committee approach to their backfield, he should fit in nicely into a three-back rotation.

While entering into a three-back rotation may seem like a downgrade for Peterson, the Lions situation will still afford him plenty of touches.

The Lions scheme relies on a power back and neither Johnson nor Swift are expected to fill that role. Currently, Bo Scarbrough is filling that role but the majority of those snaps — if not all — are now expected to shift to Peterson. Add in Scarbrough’s long injury history with Johnson and Swift’s, and it’s clear why the Lions are taking a collective approach to the position.

At the end of the day, the Lions are getting a veteran back with scheme experience who has been healthy the last two seasons and upgrades a position they desperately want to rely on. Peterson gets to step into a familiar situation, won’t be expected to carry the load, but will still have plenty of opportunities to get touches and extend his career.

Win-win.

Saints sign tight end Ethan Wolf after free agent tryouts

The New Orleans Saints signed former Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Volunteers tight end Ethan Wolf, a college teammate of Alvin Kamara’s.

The New Orleans Saints signed one of the free agents invited for a tryout earlier this week, with Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reporting that the Saints added the 6-foot-5, 258-pound Ethan Wolf. Wolf was among a group of four veteran tight ends to audition in front of Saints coaches. It’s unclear just yet which player was removed from the 80-man roster in a corresponding move.

So why the addition? Longtime co-starter Josh Hill has missed time with an injury Saints coach Sean Payton defined as a “tweak,” and two experienced backups opted out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 when training camp first kicked off. That left a vacuum on the depth chart for Wolf to step into as someone with more NFL reps than rookies Adam Trautman and Tommy Stevens.

But who is Wolf? He played for the Tennessee Volunteers at the college level, where he was a teammate of Alvin Kamara’s in 2015 and 2016. Wolf caught 91 passes in his four-year career at Rocky Top, gaining 996 receiving yards and scoring seven touchdowns. He was initially signed to the Los Angeles Rams practice squad as an undrafted rookie, and will now look to compete in Saints training camp.

Ex-Saints wide receiver Tommylee Lewis joins Teddy Bridgewater in Carolina

The Panthers signed ex-New Orleans Saints WR Tommylee Lewis after a free agent tryout, reuniting him with Teddy Bridgewater and Joe Brady.

[jwplayer 24FxnrUr-ThvAeFxT]

Another former member of the New Orleans Saints has gone turncoat and joined the Carolina Panthers. ESPN’s Field Yates reported that wide receiver Tommylee Lewis signed with the Panthers after going through a free agent workout on Saturday, reuniting him with one-time Saints assistant Joe Brady and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

The Panthers have padded out their roster with castoffs and other Saints players, including practice squad wideout Keith Kirkwood and starting cornerback Eli Apple. If the Panthers can’t beat the Saints, then, well, they’re doing their best to become them. Brady is rebuilding the Panthers receiving corps from the ground up as offensive coordinator to first-year head coach Matt Rhule, so Lewis has as good a shot at earning playing time as anyone.

Lewis passed on an opportunity with the upstart XFL earlier this year to return to the Saints, having been drafted highly by the Dallas Renegades but instead opting to sign a reserve/futures contract with New Orleans for the 2020 season. But Lewis ended up placing among ten roster cuts to open Saints training camp when the team was forced to thin its roster down to 80 players from 90 per the NFL’s new COVID-19 rules and protocols.

Listed at just 5-foot-7 and 168 pounds, the 27-year old Lewis did more work on special teams than offense with the Saints from 2016 to 2018. Including the playoffs, he appeared in 38 games, returning 41 punts for 360 yards and 24 kicks for 528 return yards. When he did take the field with the Saints offense, he caught 20 of 29 passes for 252 receiving yards, scoring two touchdowns, and logged 8 rushing attempts for another 31 yards.

His only target in the postseason is the most infamous of his career, having been blatantly fouled with both pass interference and a helmet-to-helmet hit by Los Angeles Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman in the 2018 NFC Championship Game. But the NFL’s “all-star” postseason officiating crew decided it was clean, and the Rams were helped into Super Bowl LIII, which they lost 13-3. Maybe Lewis should have sold the illegal hit better?

Report: Mike Daniels expected to sign with the Bengals

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Mike Daniels is expected to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Mike Daniels is expected to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals, “if the visit goes as planned”.

Landing Daniels during last year’s training camp was considered one of general manager Bob Quinn’s shrewdest moves of his tenure. Daniels was motivated, excited to play for coach Matt Patricia, and a terrific scheme fit, but injuries derailed his time in Detroit. He finished the year with nine games played — many limited — 10 tackles, two tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, and a single sack.

With the Lions moving on from defensive tackles Damon Harrison and A’Shawn Robinson, it made sense that the Lions would consider re-signing Daniels for stability and depth. Daniels also appeared open to returning for a second season and spoke very highly of the team in public.

But now, after reducing the roster to 80-players, the Lions appear to have moved on. Add in the Schefter report and all signs now indicate a reunion isn’t in the cards.

Unsurprisingly, Saints aren’t an odds-on favorite to sign Antonio Brown

The New Orleans Saints are not among the favorites to sign ex-Steelers, -Raiders, and -Patriots wide receiver Antonio Brown per BetOnline.

[jwplayer mVv4mgFy-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints were the last team to host embattled wide receiver Antonio Brown for a free agent workout, but they aren’t being considered by oddsmakers as a viable betting favorite. That’s probably because Brown had a meltdown in its aftermath, producing a high-profile, profane diss track against Sean Payton and claiming the Saints only invited him as part of a bizarre publicity stunt.

So it shouldn’t shock anyone that BetOnline hasn’t included the Saints in their list of favorites to sign Brown, who recently agreed to serve an eight-game suspension for multiple NFL personal conduct policy violations. The top spot belongs to the Green Bay Packers (2/1), but the same sportsbook has better odds of Brown not playing any games at all in 2020 (2/3). Other teams on their radar include the Seattle Seahawks (5/2), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3/1) and Baltimore Ravens (4/1), each of whom have been connected to Brown to some degree in recent weeks.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next. For his part, before his suspension was announced, Brown had mused on social media about maybe retiring from the NFL again. But it sure doesn’t seem like anyone expects the Saints to link up with him again.

Report: Chiefs reach ‘verbal agreement’ on contracts with all six draft picks

Pending a physical to take place on Wednesday, all six draft picks will be under contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

It didn’t take long for the Kansas City Chiefs to get contracts done with their rookie draft class.

According to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor, the Chiefs have come to a verbal agreement with all six of their draft picks from the 2020 NFL Draft. Right now, the only thing preventing them from being under contract is the fact that they’ve yet to take physicals with the team.

Rookies are scheduled to report to training camp on Monday. The physicals are currently scheduled to happen on Wednesday, only after players have cleared two consecutive COVID-19 tests on Monday and Tuesday per Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. Expect official announcements on signed contracts to come later this week after their physicals.

As of this morning, the Chiefs have $6.1 in salary cap space according to the NFLPA’s public salary cap report. That should be more than enough to sign the rookie class in Kansas City.

Here’s a reminder of the draft picks who can now officially be considered rookies in Kansas City:

Round Position Player School
Round 1, 32 Overall RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire LSU
Round 2, 63 Overall LB Willie Gay Jr. Mississippi St.
Round 3, 96 Overall OT Lucas Niang TCU
Round 4, 138 Overall CB L’Jarius Sneed LA Tech
Round 5, 177 Overall DE Mike Danna Michigan
Round 7, 237 Overall CB Thakarius ‘BoPete’ Keyes Tulane

Packers sign fifth-round pick Kamal Martin

The Packers signed their seventh draft pick on Thursday, agreeing to a rookie deal with LB Kamal Martin.

The Green Bay Packers have signed the seventh of their nine draft picks.

The team announced the signing of fifth-round pick Kamal Martin, a linebacker from Minnesota, on Thursday.

Martin joins quarterback Jordan Love, running back A.J. Dillon, offensive lineman Jon Runyan, offensive lineman Simon Stepaniak, safety Vernon Scott and outside linebacker Jonathan Garvin as the team’s seven signed draft picks. Tight end Josiah Deguara and center Jake Hanson remain unsigned.

The Packers made Martin the 175th overall pick in the 2020 draft. An All-Big Ten pick in 2019, Martin produced 177 total tackles, 13 tackles for losses, 3.5 sacks, nine pass breakups and four forced fumbles during his collegiate career with the Golden Gophers.

According to Over the Cap, Martin’s four-year deal will be worth roughly $3.57 million, with a signing bonus of just over $270,000 and a 2020 cap hit of just under $680,000.

Martin posted a photo of himself signing his first NFL contract on Instagram:

Martin will compete with several other young inside linebackers for snaps alongside Christian Kirksey at the position in 2020.
