Saints go back to Ohio State in the latest 2021 NFL mock draft

The New Orleans Saints selected Ohio State Buckeyes CB Shaun Wade in a 2021 NFL mock draft, a playmaker specializing in defending the slot.

Could the New Orleans Saints go back to the well in Columbus? They’ve had a ton of success drafting prospects out of Ohio State in recent years, ranging from wide receiver Michael Thomas to cornerback Marshon Lattimore and safety Vonn Bell (replaced in free agency by another Buckeyes product and former Saints first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins).

That’s the plan in the latest 2021 mock draft from Mark Schofield for Touchdown Wire, where New Orleans was connected to Ohio State defensive back Shaun Wade. Here’s what was written to justify that match in the first round:

“The New Orleans Saints have put together one of the league’s best defenses this season, but this pick makes them even better on paper for 2021. Dennis Allen has relied on Chauncey Gardner-Johnson as their slot cornerback this season, and while he has played well, most of Gardner-Johnson’s experience is at safety and cornerback during his college days.

“That is where Shaun Wade comes in. He has been used often in the slot for Ohio State, and his skills working underneath and against slot receivers translates perfectly to the NFL game. Adding him to this defense allows Allen to play some more matchups and to move Gardner-Johnson around to different spots based on opponent and scheme.”

It’s an interesting pick, but maybe redundant from a schematic fit. Gardner-Johnson has played well in the slot and appears to have a future there; the Saints could move him to a more-traditional safety role to accommodate Wade’s addition if they also lose Marcus Williams in free agency, but moving a good player out of position to make room for a new face is nearly the definition of hustling backwards.

That said, Wade is a great player in his own right. He’s got prototypical size at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, with the athleticism to warrant his former five-star recruit status. He’s bagged 6 interceptions (17 total passes defensed) and 3 forced fumbles in 30 games with the Buckeyes. He’s not as disruptive a player in run defense as Gardner-Johnson (with just 4 of his 77 total career tackles stopping the offense for a loss of yards) but he probably has an edge in ball skills.

The issue is his usage and fit on the team. New Orleans needs more help outside the slot, with Marshon Lattimore entering the final year of his rookie contract and Janoris Jenkins looking like a potential salary cap casualty in the spring. A long-term fix would be ideal there, but Wade doesn’t fit the profile. He only took 55 snaps as an outside corner before the 2020 season, per Pro Football Focus, and he hasn’t played very well in the role since moving there full-time.

But he’ll have an opportunity to turn that narrative around against Clemson in the upcoming Sugar Bowl. Maybe he can make enough plays to put himself on the map inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. And maybe it ends up being enough to keep him there after next year’s draft.

Sporting News names Wyatt Davis and Shaun Wade First-Team All-Americans

Ohio State football players Shaun Wade and Wyatt Davis were both named first-team All-Americans by the Sporting News Tuesday.

For the second time this week, the Ohio State football duo of Wyatt Davis and Shaun Wade were named to an All-American Team. According to a release from the Sporting News, the offensive lineman and defensive back were recognized as first-team All-Americans Tuesday.

Davis and Wade were named as Associated Press first-teamers on Monday. Both need to just make one more All-American team and they can both be considered consensus first-team All-Americans.

The two weren’t the only players recognized on Tuesday by the Sporting News. Both defensive tackle Haskell Garrett and center Josh Myers were named to the second-team.

In case you were wondering, there are five agencies that are used for purposes of being considered a consensus All-American. Along with the Associated Press and the Sporting News, the other three are the Football Writers Association (FWAA), the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), and the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

In the meantime, Wade, Davis, and the rest of their teammates continue preparations for the Sugar Bowl that’s scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Friday night.

Two Ohio State football players named Associated Press First-Team All-Americans

Two Ohio State football players were named Associated Press First-Team All-Americans on Monday. Find out which two made the cut in 2020.

The Ohio State football team is preparing to face Clemson in the Sugar Bowl as one of the semifinal matchups of the College Football Playoff, but there are some other individual awards starting to trickle in first. It’s a team game, but getting recognition for what you mean to your squad is never a bad thing, especially in Columbus where it helps with recruiting and prestige.

And on that note, it may have been a shortened season, but two Ohio State players had their dreams realized Monday when they were named to the Associated Press All-American team. Both Buckeyes were recognized as First-Teamers according to the release, and both guys are probably a couple that you would have singled out heading into the season.

So what two received the honor? We’re glad you asked.

Ohio State vs. Clemson College Football Playoff semifinal preview and prediction

Ohio State will take on Clemson in the Sugar Bowl semifinal of the College Football Playoff. Here is a preview and prediction for the game.

We’re finally here — the College Football Playoff! In a year that has ticked by at a snail’s pace, it’s hard to believe 2020 is almost over and the college football season that almost wasn’t is coming to an end.

At 6-0, Ohio State finds itself in familiar territory, back in the CFP for the fourth time and back-to-back appearances for the first time. The Buckeyes also know their foe well, matching up with the Clemson Tigers for the third- straight time in their playoff history.

The first two times on the dance floor with the Tigers didn’t go as planned, one a monumental embarrassment, the other an all-time classic, both ending with OSU on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Most believe the Buckeyes have little to no shot at knocking off Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on January 1. But that’s why we play the games, and in a season as strange as 2020 has been… anything can happen.

Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade named Big Ten’s Defensive Back of the Year

Ohio State DB Shaun Wade was named Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year Wednesday.

The Ohio State football team wants you to know that they believe they have the best defensive backs in the country. The Buckeye secondary doesn’t even care about being “DBU”. They’ve moved on to BIA… Best In America.

Shaun Wade has done his best to keep up with the moniker and was recently named the Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year in the Big Ten. Even though Wade doesn’t have the eye-popping numbers in this shortened season, he’s done enough to garner the attention of the voters.

Wade basically was learning a new position this year, moving from the slot corner to the outside corner position. It may not seem like a big move, but there are certainly nuances to each.

What might come as a surprise to many, is since the inception of this award in 2011, Shaun Wade is the first Ohio State Buckeye to win the title as the Big Ten’s best DB. When you consider the first-round NFL corners OSU has produced with names like Bradley Roby, Eli Apple, Marshon Lattimore, Denzel Ward, Jeff Okudah, and Damon Arnette, it’s unbelievable that Wade is the first winner for the Buckeyes since the inception of the Tatum-Woodson trophy in 2011.

There will be those who will try to tell you that Wade wasn’t deserving of the honor. Don’t believe them. Shaun Wade is not only the best in the Big Ten, but he’s also one of the best in the country and I think we’ll see proof of that through the end of the season.

Ohio State names its Players of the Game for Michigan State

Ohio State has identified and announced its Players of the Game for the win over Michigan State Saturday.

Ohio State took another step on its journey it hopes ends in another Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff appearance by administering a beat down to Michigan State 52-12. There were plenty of outstanding performances, including some backups that got some valuable playing time, but some stood out more than others.

Each week, OSU announces its Players of the Game, and it just did so for the win against the Spartans. There is always an Offensive Player of the Game, Defensive Player of the Game, and Special Teams Player of the Game.

Here’s what the athletic department has communicated for the penultimate game to the 2020 regular-season (or so we hope). The Michigan game watch continues in earnest.

Updated 2021 NFL draft order after the Eagles 23-17 loss to the Seahawks

Updated 2021 NFL draft order after the Eagles 23-17 loss to the Seahawks

[jwplayer boGiTYJc]

The Philadelphia Eagles are 3-7-1 and reeling after their 23-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.

Even with the loss, the Eagles are still in the thick of the NFC playoff race, and the next five weeks will either see Philadelphia win the division or land a top-7 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

With only the Ravens vs. Steelers left to finish out Week 12, here is your updated draft order via Tankathon.

The Eagles are staring at a top-6 pick for the first time since trading up to select quarterback Carson Wentz at No. 2 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Depending on how things turn out over the next five weeks, Philadelphia could rise up to the No. 3 overall pick although the Bengals are now without Joe Burrow after he suffered a torn ACL.

The Eagles will have options and names like J’Marr Chase, Penei Sewell, Patrick Surtain II, Caleb Farley, and Micah Parsons could be on the board.

The Eagles could also choose to trade down and accumulate picks for a depleted roster.

Five keys to Ohio State beating Illinois on Saturday

Ohio State travels to Illinois Saturday to try and remain undefeated. Here are five keys to the Buckeyes winning another Big Ten contest.

Ohio State takes on Illinois this weekend in what should be a fairly easy win for the Buckeyes. There are some pitfalls the team can not fall into, however. OSU has a more talented roster overall and that should help. With Ryan Day being sidelined for the game, coaching will play a huge role in the game, but it shouldn’t be too much of a problem in this one.

We shall see.

The 2020 Ohio State Buckeyes are still trying to get their defense to be more complete, so a lot of may be on the offense. That doesn’t mean the defense won’t have to play its role, but this season it all starts when this team has the ball. Let’s look at the five keys to an Ohio State victory Saturday over Illinois.

Re-live every Ohio State score against Indiana

Ohio State outlasted the Indiana Hoosiers Saturday. Re-live all six of the Buckeyes’ scores in the game with video and sound.

Ohio State survived against an upstart Indiana team on Saturday. The game never really seemed in doubt until the Hoosiers tightened things up midway through the fourth quarter. It was one of those games where Ohio State went into halftime with a big lead and seemed to be on its way to a cruising victory.

But give the Hoosiers credit. They battled back behind quarterback Michael Penix, Jr. and his 495 passing yards and five touchdowns.

Still, Indiana couldn’t quite keep up with the scoring of Ohio State, and that’s just what we believed would happen. In case you missed any of the Buckeyes’ six touchdowns, we’ve got them all for you here thanks to the amazing invention called the internet.

Here are the video highlights and recap of each.

Watch Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade get the first pick-six of his collegiate career

After going down 35-7 against Ohio State on Saturday, Indiana had scored back-to-back touchdowns and were hoping to turn a missed field goal by the Buckeyes into a one-score deficit.

Instead, Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade snatched an out route and raced to the end zone, giving the Buckeyes a 42-21 lead.

One of the top corner prospects in the 2021 NFL draft class, Wade’s first career pick-six isn’t likely to be his last. He should be one of the first players selected at his position in next year’s draft, and it’s because of big plays like this one.
