Ohio State football has six players crack updated two-round 2021 NFL Mock Draft

The Draft Wire published its updated 2020 NFL mock draft, and there are six Ohio State players through the two-rounds.

Coming off a highly successful 2020 NFL Draft in which the Buckeyes had two of the top three picks, the program will be back at it in 2021 according to Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling.

Easterling has six Buckeyes picked in the two-round mock draft. It’s a perfect split as three are projected in the first round and then three in the second round. For Ohio State, all eyes will be on Justin Fields. Where does the Heisman Finalist go?

In his projections, Fields goes second overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Quarterbacks take up the top two spots, and I bet you can guess who is No. 1 overall. Trevor Lawrence anyone?

Here’s a rundown of where all six Ohio State players are projected to go by Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling.

First … The Buckeye QB

Just two Ohio State players in Draft Wire’s NFL first round 2021 mock draft

Draft Wire has just two Ohio State players projected in its way-too-early 2021 NFL mock draft. Who are they, and where will they go?

You can find a lot of NFL mock draft sites out there, and they all differ greatly on their opinions. It all depends on where some of the NFL teams finish, what the needs are, and what kind of season each college prospect has.

We’ve run through some of the early, most-reputable NFL 2021 mock drafts before, and there’s another one that we like to keep an eye on. It’s from our sister USA TODAY site Draft Wire. In fact, it’s the site’s main job if you can’t tell from the name of the domain, and Luke Easterling does his homework and works very hard at it.

So where does Easterling have some of the Ohio State players going in next year’s first-round? He is a bit of an outlier and only has two Buckeyes going on the first day, but it’s the same two players you’ll likely see across other experts’ sites as well.

Just like many others, he has both quarterback Justin Fields and corner Shaun Wade going very, very early in his way-too-early 2021 NFL mock draft, but where, and to whom?

According to Easterling, he has Justin Fields being taken No. 2 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and cornerback Shaun Wade going No. 11 overall to the Denver Broncos.

And that’s it. No Wyatt Davis, and no Chris Olave who we believe both have a shot at sneaking into that first round — especially Davis who will be one of the best offensive lineman available.

Either way, we continue to peek at what these projections are, and more than likely, if we were to extend out past the first round, you’d see a slew of Buckeyes heading to the NFL. In fact, we’ve looked ahead and which OSU players look to be in solid shape for next April’s NFL draft.

Ohio State CB Shaun Wade listed on LOTT Impact Trophy 2020 preseason Watchlist

Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade is one of 42 players appearing on the 2020 preseason LOTT Impact Trophy watchlist.

Get ready. It’s always a sign of college football getting closer in the rearview mirror when the parade of watchlists come out for the slew of awards we see in the sport. And wouldn’t you know it, the LOTT Impact Trophy, given to “college football’s defensive best in character and performance” annually has released its 42-man preseason watchlist for the upcoming 2020 season. It is awarded to the player that best demonstrates “integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and Tenacity.”

And as you would expect, Ohio State has a representative on the list with the inclusion of cornerback Shaun Wade. The Buckeyes have had just one winner since its inception in 2004 when linebacker James Laurinaitis took the award home at the end of the 2008 season.

Wade will be a fourth-year junior who flirted with heading to the NFL early last season, but then made a decision to come back for one more year. He should be the cornerstone of an Ohio State secondary that lost three players to the 2020 NFL Draft — two of them first-rounders in Damon Arnette and Jeff Okudah.

We’ll keep an eye on all the watchlists as they are announced, and as more news is made available on the plans to have college football this fall so they can all be handed out.

Ohio State with three players appearing in Todd McShay’s top 32 prospects for 2021 NFL Draft

ESPN’s Todd McShay has published his top 32 players for next year’s 2021 NFL Draft. There are three Ohio State players appearing.

We’ve already heard from ESPN’s Mel Kiper when it comes to college prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft, and now his partner in crime, Todd McShay, has published his list of 32 players (subscription required) for next April’s draft.

And while Kiper and McShay both have three Ohio State players included in their evaluation, the third player differs. While Kiper has Justin Fields, Shaun Wade, and Wyatt Davis, McShay has swapped out Davis for receiver Chris Olave.

It’s nice to have McShay back after he had a battle with COVID-19. His analysis and expertise are generally spot-on. Here’s what he says about all three Buckeye players, and where he has them ranked in his extremely early look at the best NFL prospects for 2021.

Kiper had three Buckeyes projected in the first twenty-five players, and CBS Sports has gone even further, with four Ohio State players projected in the first round.

You can probably guess Justin Fields and feel pretty good about Shaun Wade like most every other mock draft, but included Josh Edwards’ draft projections also include Buckeye offensive linemen Wyatt Davis and Josh Myers.

Here’s what Edwards says about each of the four projected first-round talents.

Ohio State’s Shaun Wade picked as a player to build around in the NFL by ESPN’s Bill Connelly

ESPN’s Bill Connelly singled out Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade as a player an NFL team could build around in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The contracts haven’t even been signed in a lot cases for all the players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft and already many experts are already looking in the crystal ball towards the 2021 NFL Draft. Nobody knows what kind of college football season we’re going to have, but we know where we’ve been. There are guys seen as can’t miss prospects, and others that have the tools to develop into something really special.

ESPN recently published a wide-ranging roundtable on some of the prospects in the 2021 draft class. The panel focused on quarterbacks, sure-fire first-rounders, fast risers, and more.

When it came time to focus on a player other than a quarterback to build around, Bill Connelly went a different direction than everyone else and pointed to Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade. His reasoning is sound, and here’s what he said about the potential shut-down corner.

Six Ohio State players listed in Mel Kiper’s top five by position for 2021 NFL Draft

Six Ohio State players appear in Mel Kiper’s way-too-early top five by position group for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Mel Kiper is at it again. Or should we say he never really stopped? He took over your television or streaming device almost daily leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft, and now, he’s already prepping you for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Ohio State had the second-most players selected in the draft just a couple of weeks ago, and based on Kiper’s projections almost a year out from all of next year’s fun, it should be another good one — virtually or not.

That’s because according to Kiper, Ohio State has six players listed on his big board that are five of the best at their position groups. We’ve got the rundown of them all for you here.

Three Ohio State players appear in Mel Kiper’s top 25 NFL draft rankings for 2021

Mel Kiper has come out with his initial rankings for the 2021 NFL Draft and Ohio State has three players in the top 25.

By all accounts and measures, the 2020 NFL Draft that just finished up was a literal and “virtual” success. Ten Ohio State players were selected, continuing a trend of sending a slew of players to the next level. But now, it’s time to focus on next season and the 2021 NFL Draft.

One of the foremost experts on all things NFL draft related is ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Jr. of course. He’s been fixing his hair, talking fast, and providing expert analysis for as long as anyone can remember.

And now, in early May, he has just released his big board rankings for 2021. As you would expect, there are some Ohio State players appearing in his top twenty-five. What you may not have surmised is that there are three Buckeyes included.

Quarterback Justin Fields, cornerback Shaun Wade, and wide receiver Chris Olave are all among those that Kiper believes will be first-day guys when all the fun rolls out next April.

Here’s what Kiper says about all three, and where he has them ranked.

Broncos select CB Shaun Wade in 2021 NFL mock draft

The Broncos select Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade in this 2021 NFL mock draft.

It’s never too early to talk about the next NFL Draft, right?

In his way-too-early 2021 NFL mock draft, Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling has the Denver Broncos selecting Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade with the 11th overall pick in the first round.

This pick makes sense considering that cornerback made our list prediction of way-too-early 2021 draft needs for Denver. Unless the Broncos sign a left tackle during free agency, though, many fans will likely want the team to use their first-round selection on an offensive tackle.

Penn State inside linebacker Micah Parsons was also available in Easterling’s mock when Denver went on the clock. Easterling has Parsons going off the board to the Arizona Cardinals at No. 12.

The Broncos will need a long-term answer at cornerback but it’s hard to imagine the team passing on a top prospect like Parsons in 2021.

The Washington Redskins select Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick in the mock. To view the full first-round mock, click here.

Three Ohio State players in USA TODAY’s early 2021 NFL Draft rankings

Three Ohio State players appear in a way-too-early ranking of the players that may go in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Turn the page. That’s exactly what we do when one NFL draft ends, and the proverbial calendar flips to the next one. It happens almost instantaneously. Our friends at the mother ship USA TODAY have done the same thing and published a ranking of the best prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft.

And yeah, Ohio State is represented — as you would expect.

Keep in mind, this is not a mock draft, but a straight ranking of the best prospects regardless of position. As such, we’re happy to report that there are three Buckeye players included in the top 25 rankings for next season according to Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz. Those three players are quarterback Justin Fields, cornerback Shaun Wade, and offensive lineman Wyatt Davis.

Here’s where Middlehurst-Schwartz ranked all three, and what he had to say about each.
